Corbin looks to repeat history against Brewers

D-backs lefty seeking win No. 11 of breakout All-Star season

Patrick Corbin opened his breakout 2013 season against the Brewers. On Friday night, the D-backs left-hander can craft a fitting first-half bookend against Milwaukee in the second meeting of a four-game series at Chase Field.

 

Corbin carries a much higher profile now than he did on April 6, when he held the Brewers to two runs over six innings at Miller Park. At that time, he was coming off a rookie season that saw him post a 4.54 ERA while splitting time between the rotation and bullpen. The 23-year-old is now a National League All-Star with a 10-1 record and a 2.40 ERA that ranks fifth in the NL.

 

Corbin went 9-0 over his first 11 starts, but the 10th victory took him seven more outings. He finally picked it up on Sunday, when he limited the Rockies to one run on three hits over eight innings. He walked one and tied a career high with 10 strikeouts.

 

"He deserved it a long time ago," catcher Miguel Montero said of Corbin's 10th win. "He hadn't had the run support so it was tough, but he has been outstanding. He should be 15-0 to be honest. I'm pretty sure there's a lot of weight off his shoulders to get that 10th win."

 

The D-backs will hope Corbin wastes no time getting to 11 as they try to finish strong in their final series before the All-Star break. Arizona had lost three in a row and saw its NL West lead shrink to 1 1/2 games over the surging Dodgers before pulling out a 5-3 win on Thursday night.

 

The Brewers will counter with lefty Tom Gorzelanny (1-2, 2.12 ERA), who is making his third spot start of the season and second this week. He has spent most the year in the Milwaukee bullpen but excelled when given the chance to start.

 

Gorzelanny took the loss on Sunday against the Mets but surrendered only two unearned runs over six innings, with New York scoring thanks to a pair of errors by third baseman Juan Francisco. He walked none and struck out eight, his most since July 1, 2011.

 

"His stuff is better than what I remembered as a starter," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "The fastball is really live, and he mixes in the other pitches whenever he wants to and he can keep them down low in the zone. That's huge for trying to keep those guys out of the air and from driving the ball. I know he gave up some hits, but a couple of them were the tappers down third. He did a great job."

 

Brewers: Braun likely out until second half

Left fielder Ryan Braun was placed on the bereavement list before Thursday's game. Braun left the team to deal with a family medical issue and can remain on the list for a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven. That means he could return for Sunday's series finale, at the earliest.

 

Milwaukee already had rested Braun on Wednesday, a day after he went 1-for-3 in his first game off the disabled list. He had missed the previous 26 games with a right thumb contusion.

 

• Outfielder Khris Davis, the club's No. 14 prospect, was recalled to take Braun's spot on the active roster for Friday's game. The 25-year-old was 3-for-16 (.188) with two doubles in his first stint with Milwaukee this season and was hitting .250 with 11 home runs in 64 games for Triple-A Nashville.

 

D-backs: De La Rosa added to 'pen

Left-hander Eury De La Rosa was called up from Triple-A Reno on Thursday, adding a fresh arm a day after suffering a 14-inning loss to the Dodgers. Arizona optioned Tyler Skaggs, Wednesday's starter, to Class A Visalia.

 

De La Rosa was 1-4 with a 5.14 ERA in 37 appearances for Reno this season, pitching in a hitter-friendly environment. The 23-year-old has a 2.87 ERA during his six seasons in the D-backs' system.

 

• Manager Kirk Gibson turned to Brad Ziegler to close out Thursday's victory, a night after Heath Bell blew a save, Arizona's Major League-leading 19th of the season. Ziegler hit a batter and gave up a single but nailed down his second save of the season. Both have come this month.

 

Worth noting

• Gorzelanny twice pitched a scoreless inning of relief against the D-backs this season. He has a 4.63 ERA in six career starts against Arizona, but the most recent of those came in 2010, when he was with the Cubs.

 

• Corbin has held the opposition to two runs or fewer in 14 of his 18 outings.

As a Fantasy owner of Corbin, I can tell you he had 3 Wins blown trying to get #10 by Heath Bell. Montero's Run Support issue wasn't the problem.

 

Corbin is a guy who I read to start the season found 2-3MPH in his Slider that also improved with the velocity with 1-2MPH in his Fastball. Pretty amazing to see what that little amount of velocity can do for a Pitcher. Julio Teheran/Shelby Miller also fit the increased MPH nets success this season.

 

If only one of the Brewers prospects could achieve that improvement.

Why is yuni getting starts over Francisco these last few games. Start a guy who has no future with this team over a guy who has a ton of potential?

Completely agree about Yuni over Francisco. The guy is awful, he sucks, he is terrible, etc etc. 273 PA, .200/.231/.338 and he's getting starts? This franchise/RRR/DM is a flippin joke.
