Before Buxton was promoted the MWL had quite the collection of CF prospects... Unfortunately Hunter Morris made the Not Hot list.

Prospect Hot Sheet: George Springer Could Make A Run At 40-40

11. Albert Almora, of, Cubs

Team: low Class A Kane County (Midwest)

Age: 19

Why He’s Here: .526/.550/.895 (10-for-19), 6 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1-for-1 SB

The Scoop: Almora collects hits in bunches. In 17 of the 40 games he’s played this year (he missed time with a hamate injury), Almora has had two or more hits. He already has eight games of three or more hits. Almora’s best fit in the future Cubs lineup is as a top-of-the-order table setter, and in the Midwest League this season, few have done that job nearly as well as Almora.

IN THE TEAM PHOTO

Harold Ramirez, of, Pirates: Other teams saw the $1.05 million the Pirates paid for Ramirez in 2011 (and another $570,000 for Elvis Escobar, who like Ramirez was also represented by Hugo Catrain) and didn’t see the talent to justify the price. Now Ramirez, 18, is hitting .322/.402/.483 in 23 games for short-season Jamestown, while Escobar is over .300 himself.

NOT HOT

Hunter Morris, 1b, Brewers: The 24-year-old belted a couple of homers on the road at Memphis this week but went just 4-for-26 (.154) overall with 11 strikeouts and no walks for Triple-A Nashville. Morris’ component measures this season are almost exactly in line with his Double-A Southern League MVP campaign a year ago—slightly less power, slightly more walks and strikeouts—but the hits simply are not falling. He’s batting .238/.317/.487 through 86 games and appears no closer to upsetting the Juan Francisco/Yuniesky Betancourt first-base platoon in Milwaukee.

You'll remember this recent article we linked to featuring unsigned 16th round RHP Corey Miller out of Pepperdine.

Among all the unsigned picks, his was the only still pending that was in doubt.

RHP Jairo Asencio, who the Brewers traded to the Orioles this spring for a PTBNL, as noted in this Adam McCalvy post from March, was called up to Baltimore today.

Hey, we never did find out who that player was, did we? Guessing his last name was "cash".

Was hoping for Chris Davis...

(You may remember Asencio was kicked off his winter league club for attitude issues. Bet his attitude's better today.)

Prospect Hot Sheet Chat With Matt Eddy

Keith (Manchester, CT): Thanks Matt. Who has the higher ceiling, CJ Edwards or Tyler Glasnow? Does Glasnow's age -- almost 2 full years younger -- give him the edge?

Matt Eddy: I would probably give the edge to Glasnow given his youth (as you cite), his higher peak velocity (96 mph) and his height advantage (6-foot-7). Though in Edwards' defense, I know the Rangers expect him to fill out his frame considerably, and because of the natural cutting action he imparts on the ball, he throws a ball that literally no other pitcher can throw in exactly the same fashion. Also, to go from the 48th round to such a complete, young pitcher so quickly bespeaks a high level of natural athleticism.

Aaron (Louisville): Any prospects from this year to next that you see making a huge jump in the rankings? Kind of like Oscar Taveras when he went from 74 to 3 from 2012 to 2013.

Matt Eddy: I would be looking at Pirates Double-A CF Gregory Polanco for that honor.

Ryan Ricotta (Sarasota, FL): Met have Wheeler, Harvey, Syndergard, and Montero. Pirates have Cole, Taillon, Glasnow, and Heredia. Which of these 2 staffs would you rather have in 5 years? Is there another organization that has better young pitching talent than these 2?

Matt Eddy: I'm biased in that I know the Mets system more intimately, but given what Harvey has shown us in MLB thus far, I think I'd take the Mets' front three and worry about the incidentals later.

steve (Toledo): bigger bust:Juan Duran or Yorman Rodriguez?

Matt Eddy: Hit up J.J. Cooper during his next chat and ask him about these two Reds prospects. He has the most perspective. He's been covering the Reds seemingly since Chris Gruler was a going concern.

Final: Birmingham 6 Huntsville 2

A costly 9th inning error opened the door for the Birmingham Barons to score 4 unearned runs in defeating the Huntsville Stars 6-2 on NASA night at The Joe. The Stars only got 2 innings out of starter Taylor Jungmann as he struggled with control. Jungmann was charged with 1 earned run allowed on 1 hit and a season high 6 walks while striking out 1 and throwing a wild pitch. Jungmann threw 62 pitches over those 2 innings, 30 for strikes. He also posted a 3-1 ground out to fly out ratio. Taylor ended up with a no decision tonight.

With Jungmann's early exit, the Stars bullpen was asked to put in some overtime. First up was Frankie De La Cruz. De La Cruz worked the 3rd and 4th innings for the Stars. He allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 3. Next up was new Stars pitcher Brent Leach. Leach, who was just added to the Stars roster, pitched 2 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits while striking out 1. Righty Casey Medlen was brought on to start the 7th. He worked scoreless 7th and 8th innings. Medlen was left in to begin the 9th, but was unable to finish it. A costly error by Nick Shaw led to the Barons scoring the 4 runs in the 9th to blow the game open. Medlen ended with a line of 2 2/3 innings, 4 runs, none earned on 2 hits, 4 walks and 2 strike outs. Prior to allowing a bases clearing double, Medlen and catcher Adam Weisenburger felt they were the victims of some poor calls by the home plate umpire. So much so, that Weisenburger ended up being tossed from the game. Arcenio Leon came on to get the last out in the 9th.

Huntsville Box Score

The Stars had 7 hits, drew 3 walks, and had a batter hit by a pitch, but could only push 2 runs across the plate. Right fielder Rene Tosoni was responsible for one of the runs scored. His 5th inning double drove in Nick Shaw, who had reached via base on balls. Tosoni added 2 singles to finish the night 3-4. The other Stars player with multiple hits was Shea Vucinich, who went 2-4 with 2 singles. Newly named All Star Adam Weisenburger and Mike Walker each singled for the Stars. Walker also drew a walk and drove in the Stars other run. Second baseman Nick Shaw drew 2 walks for the Stars.

Huntsville Play By Play

Clutch, 2 out single from Mike Walker to get the Stars on the board.

Huntsville Bottom of the 3rd

Chadwin Stang hit by pitch.

Nick Shaw out on a sacrifice bunt, third baseman Marcus Semien to first baseman Dan Black. Chadwin Stang to 2nd.

Rene Tosoni singles on a ground ball to shortstop Tyler Saladino. Chadwin Stang to 3rd.

Brock Kjeldgaard strikes out swinging.

Mike Walker singles on a ground ball to right fielder Trayce Thompson. Chadwin Stang scores. Rene Tosoni to 2nd.

Shea Vucinich flies out to right fielder Trayce Thompson.

Huntsville (9-14 second half, 38-53 overall) will play game 4 against Birmingham tomorrow evening at The Joe. Right hander David Goforth (2-1, 4.60) will look to build on his last start as he takes the mound for the Stars. Game time is scheduled for 6:43 Central with Stars Radio Broadcaster Alex Cohen kicking things off at 6:28 with the pregame show.

Manatees first baseman Nick Ramirez, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 4-for-5 with three RBI and hit his 17th home run of the year in Brevard County's 10-8 win over the Palm Beach Cardinals on Friday night at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

JUPITER, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees looked like they were on their way to a rout but had to hold on to edge the Palm Beach Cardinals, 10-8 on Friday night at Roger Dean Stadium.

The Manatees (12-8 second half, 49-38 overall) enterted the bottom of the ninth with a 10-4 lead as Dan Meadows entered the game. Alex Mejia led off the inning for the Cardinals (13-8, 42-47) and reached on a throwing error by third baseman Brandon Macias. Meadows would then walk the next two batters to load the bases, before striking out David Popkins for the first out of the inning.

Meadows then allowed back-to-back walks to Starlin Rodriguez and Jonathan Rodriguez to bring two runs home as Palm Beach cut Brevard's lead to 10-6. Meadows was lifted for Santo Manzanillo, who did not fair much better at first as he too allowed back-to-back, bases loaded walks as the winning run was now on base.

Manzanillo though was able to settle down and get Nick Longmire to strike out swinging and then Mejia to fly out to center to end the game and keep the 'Tees record when leading after eight innings at a perfect 43-0, the best mark in the Florida State League.

Brevard County got on the scoreboard first in the second inning when Brandon Macias hit a three-run homer to left field, his third homer of the season. Macias went 2-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. For Macias, his three RBI is a new season-high.

Nick Ramirez added his 17th shot of the season and his first since June 24, when he led off the third inning with a solo homer to make it a 4-0 game. Ramirez went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. It was Ramirez's second four-hit game of the season and second in the last three games.

Palm Beach would get one run back in the bottom of the inning on a two-out RBI single from Popkins. The Cardinals would get just one more run off of Manatees' starting pitcher Chad Pierce (5-3, 3.49 ERA).

Pierce had his second straight quality start as he allowed two runs in six innings of work. He yielded seven hits and two walks, while striking out four. In his five appearances (two starts) in the second half of the season thus far, Pierce is 3-1 with a 1.54 ERA.

A two-out rally in the fourth inning plated four more for the 'Tees and gave them a 7-1 lead. A two-run homer by Yadiel Rivera started things off and then Mitch Haniger and Ramirez both reached on back-to-back singles. Cameron Garfield then cleared the bases with his 16th double of the season to knock Palm Beach starting pitcher Jay Voss out of the game.

Brevard County and Palm Beach will continue their four-game set on Saturday evening with first pitch scheduled for 5:35 p.m.

Lefty Jed Bradley (4-3, 4.21) will make his first appearance since June 22 as he will get the start for the Manatees. The Cardinals will counter with Kurt Heyer (2-2, 4.23).

Final: Fort Wayne (Padres) 8, Wisconsin 6 (13 innings)

TinCaps escape Wisconsin with a 13-ininng win

Rattlers can't push across the winning run and it costs them

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had the majority of scoring opportunities late in Friday's game against the Fort Wayne TinCaps. But, Fort Wayne scored two runs in the top of the thirteenth inning to defeat Wisconsin 8-6 Friday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

Mallex Smith drew a walk to start the game for the TinCaps (50-40 overall, 7-14 second half). He stole second, his 34th stolen base of the season, and moved to third on an infield grounder. Diego Goris drove Smith home with another infield grounder and the TinCaps had the lead in the first inning.

Mike Garza walked to start the Timber Rattlers half of the second inning. He stole second with one out. Max Walla knocked in Garza to tie the game with a single to right.

Fort Wayne went back in front in the top of the fourth inning. Dane Phillips doubled just inside the line in left field with one out. Chris Burke followed with a home run to center and the TinCaps were up 3-1.

Wisconsin (38-48, 9-12) rallied to take their first lead of the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Walla and Tyler Roberts each singled with one out. Orlando Arcia tripled to left-center to drive in both runners to tie the game. Then, Alfredo Rodriguez dropped a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to let Arcia score the run that put the Rattlers up 4-3.

But, Fort Wayne strung together three straight hits off Rattlers starter Eric Semmelhack in the top of the sixth to go back in front. Phillips singled with one out. Burke followed with a single that put runners on the corners. Corey Adamson singled to send Phillips home with the tying run. The hit also allowed Burke to take third and when the throw went through to third, Adamson went to second base. An RBI grounder by Luis Domoromo allowed Burke to score and the TinCaps were up 5-4.

Fort Wayne added to their lead in the top of the seventh inning. Reliever Mike Strong walked Brian Adams on a close 3-2 pitch to start the inning. Smith sacrificed him to second base with a bunt. Maxx Tissenbaum singled to center and the TinCaps were up 6-4.

Wisconsin loaded the bases with two outs against a pair of Fort Wayne relievers in the bottom of the eighth inning. Trevor Gott retired the first two batters of the inning. Then, Victor Roache drew a four pitch walk and Mike Garza singled. Fort Wayne brought left-handed reliever Chris Nunn into the game to face Rattler lefty Adam Giacalone. Nunn walked Giacalone on four pitches to load the bases. That brought Walla, another left-handed hitter in the Rattlers lineup to the plate.

Walla cracked a single to left field to score Roache. Garza tried to score by Domoromo's throw to the plate was in time for the third out of the inning and the Rattlers were down 6-5 heading to the ninth.

Arcia got the rally started in the bottom of the ninth inning with a one out single against Fort Wayne closer Roman Madrid. He stole second to get into scoring position. Rodriguez singled to center and Arcia raced home with the tying run.

Rodriguez took second on the throw to the plate so the TinCaps elected to walk Michael Reed intentionally to set up a potential double play. Tyrone Taylor stepped in and sent a fly ball down the left field line. Domoromo ran it down with a fine running catch for the second out of the inning. Victor Roache was the last out of the inning as he was ruled to have gone around on a check swing for strike three.

Walla picked up his fourth hit of the night with a two out double in the bottom of the tenth. Roberts battled Madrid to a full count and sent a bloop to shallow right-center, but Adamson raced in to make a sliding, game-saving catch to send the game to the eleventh.

Rodriguez doubled with one out in the bottom of the eleventh against Matt Chabot, the sixth Fort Wayne pitcher of the night. The TinCaps again walked Reed to set up the double play. Taylor scalded a slicing, one-hopper to short that Tyler Stibblefield dove to stop and turn into an inning-ending double play.

Neither team threatened in the twelfth inning.

Taylor Wall, Wisconsin's fourth pitcher of the game, gave up back-to-back singles to start the TinCaps thirteenth. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners up a base. Wisconsin elected to walk the next batter to load the bases for a potential inning ending double play of their own. Wall went to a full count with Domoromo and just missed with the 3-2 pitch to force in the go ahead run.

Fort Wayne added an insurance run when Stubblefield's line drive deflected off the glove of Wall and the Rattlers got a force play at second.

Rodriguez doubled with two outs in the bottom of the thirteenth, but Chabot got the final out of the game to deny the Rattlers a three-game sweep of the TinCaps.

The Timber Rattlers continue their homestand on Saturday night with game one of a series with the Lake County Captains, the Midwest League affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. Tyler Wagner (7-7, 3.63) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Lake County has Jake Sisco (4-6, 3.69) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 6:35pm.

The Fox River Mall presents Meet a Storybook Princess Night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Saturday. Cinderella, Snow White, Belle, Tiana, and Sleeping Beauty will be available throughout the game for a meet and greet with photos for all fans. Also, the first 500 girls to attend the game receive a princess tiara and wand.

It's a Fly Away Saturday, too. That means one lucky fan will win airfare for two from Funjet Vacations and Fox World Travel at this game. Plus, FOX 11 presents a postgame fireworks display!

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, there are several ways to catch the action. My NEW32's Sports Showdown will have the television broadcast starting with their pregame show at 6:00pm. The radio broadcast can be heard on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm. Saturday's game is also available to subscribers of MiLB.TV.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Since I pimp Tyrone Taylor quite a bit I'll lead off with this, he had "A League of Their Own" moment in the 6th. He had no chance to get the runner going to 3rd but threw that way anyway, allowing an insurance run to move up to 2nd. When Taylor threw ball I yelled at the TV (yes I was into an A ball game) and then instantly thought of this clip, one of my favorites. Other than throwing to the wrong base, Taylor had a pretty decent game, and that play didn't cost the T-Rats as Eric Semmelhack got out of the inning without that run scoring.

Alfredo Rodriguez has been on a some kind of tear, he's hit in 8 of his last 10 going 3-6 and with 2 2B in the game.

Max Walla also had a heck of a game, he went 4-6 with a 2B. Orlando Arcia had the other multi-hit game going 2-6 with the huge 3B covered above.

Michael Strong and Jonathan Armold pitched well.

Wisconsin Recap

The T-Rats 5th featured a couple of plays which I was worried might have been the difference in the game and when the game went to extras this inning became my focus: I didn't understand playing for 1 run with a pitcher on the ropes, then TinCaps' SS Tyler Stubblefield made a great defensive play knocking down Taylor's single on the edge of the IF to hold Reed at 3B which cost the T-Rats a run.

With Tyrone Taylor batting, Michael Reed steals (21) 2nd base.
