Nice to see Arcia back in the lineup tonight.

And Taylor with another double. Ho Hum.

Final: Birmingham 3 Huntsville 1 (5 innings)

Before the Stars could mount their comeback, the rains came and washed out the last 4 innings, leaving the Stars on the wrong end of a 3-1 score. Drew Gagnon started tonight for Huntsville. He struggled with control early on, but seemed to get into a rhythm as the game moved on. For the night, Gagnon (1-5, 6.82) pitched all 5 innings, giving up 3 runs, all earned on 5 hits and 5 walks while striking out 2. Gagnon walked 4 batters in the first 2 innings, including walking the bases loaded in the 2nd. He also allowed his 4 home run on the season in the 4th. Gagnon threw 103 pitches in just 5 innings, only 55 for strikes. He did post a good GO/FO ratio of 8-3.

Final: @Helena 9, Idaho Falls 7

Helena box score

Four Chukars errors led to seven unearned Brewers runs and made the difference in the game. Not to say that Helena didn't generate some of its own offense--the H-Crew did rack up 10 hits. Two each belonged to Michael Ratterree and Jalen Harris, though every starter contributed by reaching base at least once.

On the mound, neither Taylor Williams nor Barrett Astin had good outings. Forget the runs--from big-time college pitchers in the Pioneer League, I at least want to see some solid peripherals. I'm tired of the meh. Andy Hillis took over from Astin after two runs had scored in the 9th to pick up the save and extend his scoreless streak.

Garrett Cooper was absent again and has not played since 7/5. Clint Coulter still MIA since 7/2. The slumping Jose Pena was also out of the lineup tonight.

Helena play-by-play

Four runs without doing anything more impressive than hitting a grounder:

Helena Bottom of the 7th

  • Pitching Change: Josiel Martinez replaces Ashton Goudeau.
  • Nathan Orf hit by pitch.
  • Omar Garcia singles on a ground ball to second baseman Carlos Garcia. Nathan Orf to 2nd.
  • Charlie Markson out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Josiel Martinez to second baseman Carlos Garcia. Nathan Orf to 3rd. Omar Garcia to 2nd.
  • Michael Ratterree reaches on a fielder's choice out, third baseman Hunter Dozier to catcher Frank Schwindel to third baseman Hunter Dozier. Nathan Orf out at home. Omar Garcia to 3rd. Michael Ratterree to 2nd on the throw.
  • Josiel Martinez intentionally walks Taylor Brennan.
  • Dustin Houle reaches on a fielding error by third baseman Hunter Dozier. Omar Garcia scores. Michael Ratterree to 3rd. Taylor Brennan to 2nd.
  • Jalen Harris singles on a ground ball to right fielder Elier Hernandez. Michael Ratterree scores. Taylor Brennan scores. Dustin Houle to 3rd.
  • Angel Ortega walks. Jalen Harris to 2nd.
  • Jesse Weiss walks. Dustin Houle scores. Jalen Harris to 3rd. Angel Ortega to 2nd.
Pitching Change: Brent Bonvillain replaces Josiel Martinez.
  • Nathan Orf grounds into a force out, shortstop Humberto Arteaga to second baseman Carlos Garcia. Jesse Weiss out at 2nd.

Final: Brevard County 4, Clearwater 2

'Tees score three late to top Threshers

Brevard County pitcher Alex Moore, the Brewers' 28th round selection in last month's MLB First-Year Player Draft, threw three scoreless innings of relief in his Class A-Advanced debut on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium. The Manatees scored three runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Clearwater Threshers, 4-2, for their third straight win. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

AUDIO: Game Highlights

VIERA, Fla. - Following up on a performance that saw seven runs in the final two team at-bats on Tuesday, the Brevard County Manatees took advantage of the Clearwater Threshers' bullpen again on Wednesday night with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 4-2 win at Space Coast Stadium.

With relief pitcher Jordan Guth entering the game, Brandon Macias led off the big inning by poking a single to left, and then D'Vontrey Richardson pushed him over on a sacrifice bunt. Consecutive walks to Yadiel Rivera, Mitch Haniger loaded the bases, with a third straight walk to Nick Ramirez forcing home Macias for the tying run.

Cameron Garfield then hit a grounder to second baseman Carlos Alonso, who tossed to second to get the first out, but the throw by shortstop Jose Mojica to first to try double play sailed wide and gave Mitch Haniger time to score from second.

A fourth walk by Guth to Greg Hopkins loaded the bases again, but Brevard County (11-8 second half, 48-38 overall) left them loaded though the damage had already been done.

None of those runners needed to score in the end, as left Brent Leach came on and posted his third straight scoreless outing for the save. He allowed his first hit in a Manatees' uniform, but struck out the side.

The Manatees scored first in the second, with Ramirez taking a leadoff walk and scoring when Ben McMahan grounded into a bases-loaded double play.

Three base runners and the run in that frame were the most that the 'Tees could muster against Threshers' southpaw starter Mario Hollands, who matched a career-high nine strikeouts in seven innings. He walked one and ceded just four hits, but did not factor into the decision with Guth taking the loss in his rocky eighth frame.

Brevard County starting pitcher Damien Magnifico (0-1, 6.59 ERA) made it through the first pitch in the second inning before leaving, with the trainer and coaches looking at his right hand.

Alex Moore, who was drafted in the 28th round of last month's MLB First-Year Player Draft, made his Class A-Advanced debut, in relief of Magnifico. He threw three shutout innings and allowed just two hits and two walks as he left the game in line for the win.

Clearwater (9-9, 44-42) took a 2-1 lead in the fifth against Matt Miller, using a Carlos Alonso run-scoring triple and Aaron Altherr's RBI single to plate the two runs.

Final game of both the three-game series and the season series between the Threshers and the Manatees is scheduled for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Cody Scarpetta (0-3, 5.59) will start on the mound for Brevard County and he will be matched up against lefty Hoby Milner (8-4, 4.24) for Clearwater.

Not sure if this was posted previously, but I noticed via the Brewers Player Development Twitter account we now have the preliminary makings of a Gian Rizzo Scouting Report...

@BrewersPD: @bgbidd3 He throws a FB that tops out around 91 right now. Curve and Change are his secondary pitches

Good catch, & thanks for posting this! A scouting report exists!

Wisconsin claims 8-6 win over Fort Wayne

Rattlers rally three times to beat TinCaps

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers needed three comebacks, but they finally overcame the Fort Wayne TinCaps 8-6 Wednesday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Chris McFarland drove in the run that tied the game 6-6 with a triple and scored the go ahead run on a wild pitch in the sixth inning. Ryan Gibbard made that lead hold with four hitless innings out of the bullpen.

Fort Wayne opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. Dane Phillips singled with two outs to drive in Max Tissenbaum for a 1-0 lead.

The Timber Rattlers took the lead in the bottom of the first inning with a two out hit of their own. Mike Garza singled to drive in Michael Reed and Tyrone Taylor for a 2-1 advantage.

The TinCaps rallied for three runs off Wisconsin starting pitcher Preston Gainey in the top of the second inning. The frame started with a walk to Luis Tejada, who stole second and took third on a wild pitch. Luis Domoromo singled to drive in Tejada. Tyler Stubblefield followed with a double that scored Domoromo. Later in the inning, a single by Mallex Smith sent Stubblefield across the plate for a 4-2 lead.

Wisconsin rallied to retake the lead thanks to a two-out error in the bottom of the second. Tyler Roberts doubled with one out, but was still at second with two away. Orlando Arcia reached on a error to extend the inning and put runners on the corners. Reed followed with a single to drive in Roberts and send Arcia around to third base. Taylor was next and he singled to knock in Arcia to tie the game 4-4. The single also sent Reed around to third base. An error on a grounder off the bat of Victor Roache let Reed score the go ahead run for a 5-4 lead.

Fort Wayne tied the game in the top of the third. They had the bases loaded with one out on a pair of walks and a single. Domoromo sent a grounder to first and the Rattlers got the out at second, but there was no chance to get Domoromo at first for the double play. That let the runner at third score the tying run.

Another fielder's choice in the top of the fourth got Fort Wayne the lead against reliever Rodolfo Fernandez. They had runners at the corners and one out and Diego Goris had a high chopper near second base. The Rattlers got the out at second, but they again had no chance to turn the inning ending double play. That allowed the runner from third score and the TinCaps led 6-5.

Wisconsin made their third and final rally in the bottom of the sixth. Max Walla started the inning with a triple. One out later, Chris McFarland tripled to knock in Walla with the tying run. Arcia was next and he struck out, but pitch for strike three got to the backstop for a wild pitch to allow McFarland to score the go ahead run.

Wisconsin tacked on a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Arcia that drove in Roberts.

Gibbard, who came on in the top of the sixth inning, worked around a pair of walks and did not allow a hit over his four innings of work. He struck out Phillips with a runner at first to end the game and pick up his fourth win of the season.

Wednesday night was the thirteenth consecutive Timber Rattlers game to be decided by two or fewer runs. Wisconsin is 8-5 in their last thirteen games.

Game two of the series is Friday night. Leonard Lorenzo (1-4, 6.10) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Max Fried (3-3, 3.62) is set to start for the TinCaps. Game time is set for 7:05pm.

Paramedics, firemen, police officers, and their families will receive $1 off reserved bleachers and box seating for Emergency Services Night. Plus, the first 1,000 fans to attend this game will receive a baseball courtesy of Baycom. The baseball will feature Clint Coulter, Victor Roache, and Mitch Haniger, the top three picks by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2012 draft.

It's a North Shore Bank Family Night and kids 12 and under receive a free hot dog and soda. Children 14 and under may run the bases thanks to Molina Healthcare after the postgame fireworks display.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, catch the television broadcast on My NEW32's Sports Showdown starting with the pregame show at 6:30pm. The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM or through the IHeartRadio app starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm. Thursday's game is also available to subscribers of MiLB.TV.

WP: Ryan Gibbard (4-2)

LP: Matt Chabot (2-1)

TIME: 3:02

ATTN: 4,043

Wisconsin Boxscore

Ryan Gibbard posted his first scoreless appearance in some time and picked a great spot, shutting down the Tincaps and enabling the come back.

The young Rattlers have shown some resiliency lately, 2 very nice come from behind wins after the starting pitchers got blown up.

The offense was fantastic once again as Michael Reed, Tyrone Taylor, Max Walla, Tyler Roberts, and Chris Mcfarland all had multiple hit games.

As noted earlier Orlando Arcia returned to the line-up but had a rough game, I didn't recall him striking out 3 times in a game all year so I looked up his game log and sure enough, he hadn't... well until tonight.

On top of another nice comeback the T-Rats played clean defense... dare I say this team is finally starting to ascend?

Wisconsin Recap

Lots to wade through, as the score and game story would suggest.
