Any SharePoint experts out there?

Dmiles23

Last fall the company I work for finally decided to make the jump into the 21st century and implement our first employee intranet. One of the guys on our IT Team and I were picked to head up the effort. Neither of us had any previous experience working in SharePoint, let alone building an intranet site from stratch. We each took a couple training sessions, and so far have progressed on the project pretty successfully; but we have recently come upon some small issues that have us baffled.

Does anyone have any experience with SharePoint? Does anyone know of any SharePoint forums that may be of a help to us? It's just frustrating because some of the issues we are experiencing seem to be very basic, but no matter how much Googling we do we can't find a fix that works.

Thanks in advance!

Man, I was a SharePoint admin for about a minute several years ago. I was severely underqualified though. I still have some of the books...maybe I can look something up for you.

We have a bunch of SharePoint books, but it's just the things we are having problems with are too random to find in a book. For example:

One issue we are having is we are using the Discussion Board SharePoint feature for a company Bulletin Board (post things you are looking to buy/sell). We want the posts to delete themselves after they have been posted for 30 days. I've done some research, and it looks like this is a known issue with SharePoint... but we aren't able to get the work-around to work.

Another issue is we are having an issue pulling our company directory over from Active Directory. This is one issue the IT guy is working on and is way over my head, but he is doing everything his research is telling him to do but it's still giving him an error message.

A third stupid issue is we can't figure out how to get PDF files to open in their own window. When they open, they open in the window the SharePoint site is in.

I have just started using SharePoint or will be going to be using it soon so I am in the same boat as you are though I have a couple of people who I get to work with who have used SharePoint a lot.

This seems to be a very active forum for SharePoint.

For your links only opening in the same window have you tried putting in a javascript?

Something like this should work. http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/19871/Opening-PDFs-in-a-new-window-with-JavaScript

I am a site administrator, but I haven't had any of the issues you are experiencing, so I'm afraid I'm not much help. As far as the .pdf issue, have you checked the settings in your document library to ensure it is prompted to open in a new window? I think that is a choice that can be made..
