Final: DSL Cubs 15, DSL Brewers 6

DSL Brewers Box Score

The Brewers managed just one less hit than the Cubs, and had a 5-4 lead after the third inning, but it all went south from there. Young Yosmer Leal's struggles continued as he allowed five runs, three earned in 3.2 innings. He allowed three hits and three walks, but did manage to strike out five. Angel Ventura got banged around in relief of Ventura, giving up five runs, four earned, on four hits in 2.1 innings to take the loss. Axel Cordero pitched a scoreless seventh and was the only Brewers pitcher to go unscored upon. Marcos Padilla got touched up for three runs in the eighth and Boanerges Nova surrendered two unearned runs in the ninth.

Jorge Quiterio was on base four times in five plate appearances. He singled, doubled and was hit twice by pitches. First baseman Juan De Leon reached base in three of his five trips to the plate with a pair of singles and a walk. Center fielder Yunior Santana had two singles and two stolen bases. Leudi Otano doubled, while Daniel Leonardo, Juan Ortiz, Kevin Martinez and Gregory Munoz each chipped in a base hit. The Brewers defense struggled quite a bit today as Munoz and De Leon each committed an error, while Quiterio really had a rough day defensively with three errors from the third base position.

Kudos, DSL catcher Kevin Martinez today. No passed balls, seven wild pitches. Apparently when they're wild, they're really wild.

Third base is so tough to play at the lowest levels of the system. We haven't seen 19-year-old Sthervin Matos since he went on a throwing error fest (last game June 19th), must be injured again.

Here is tonight’s interview with Sounds pitcher Jimmy Nelson, who discusses his rain-shortened loss last night in Albuquerque and what pitchers have to consider when working at hitter-friendly Isotopes park; his time at Triple-A so far; what he’s looking forward to next week for the Futures Game in New York; and facing Dodgers phenom Yasiel Puig earlier this season at Double-A.

Final: @Helena 9, Idaho Falls 5

Helena box score

The Brewers collected 16 legitimate baserunners (eight hits, seven walks, one HBP), and the Chukars helped them out with three errors as well. Taylor Brennan continues to punish the ball when he gets a hold of it, socking a double and an Earl Weaver special. Seven of Brennan's 12 hits have gone for extra bases. Omar Garcia has quietly gotten hot, going 3-4 with a walk today to raise his average above .300; considering he started the year something like 1-20, that's pretty okay. Garcia also stole two bases, giving him five now, but was picked off as well. If he turns into Carlos Gomez you read it here first.

MH highlighted Renaldo Jenkins leaving earlier; his replacement, Nathan Orf was on three times and scored three runs. Joltin' Jesse Weiss gets a start every week or so, three so far, and has a hit in all of them; he was also on base three times tonight.

Still no Clint Coulter. Jose Pena took an 0-4 collar (Do you still call it that if they draw a walk? I know the hit total is still collar-shaped but it doesn't seem quite fair) to drop him back onto the interstate.

Oh, pitchers. Brandon Moore got hammered for all five Idaho Falls runs while failing to escape the 2nd inning. Eduard Reyes, who I am now officially Talking About, came in and calmed things down considerably with 4.1 shutout and almost entirely clean innings.

Helena play-by-play

I didn't highlight Michael Ratterree above, but as a general rule if you club a two-out, bases-loaded triple, you get a gold star:

Helena Bottom of the 2nd

  • Jalen Harris strikes out swinging.
  • Jesse Weiss lines out to third baseman Hunter Dozier.
  • Angel Ortega walks.
  • Nathan Orf singles on a ground ball to first baseman Cody Stubbs. Angel Ortega to 2nd.
  • Omar Garcia reaches on a fielding error by second baseman Carlos Garcia. Angel Ortega to 3rd. Nathan Orf to 2nd.
  • Michael Ratterree triples (1) on a line drive to right fielder Elier Hernandez. Angel Ortega scores. Nathan Orf scores. Omar Garcia scores.
  • Taylor Brennan doubles (3) on a line drive to right fielder Elier Hernandez. Michael Ratterree scores.
  • Jose Pena walks.
  • Dustin Houle flies out to left fielder Dominique Taylor.

Sounds Topped By 'Topes, 10-1

Nashville's Hainley Statia Belts Team's Only Run

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Nashville Sounds allowed a season-high 18 hits in Tuesday night's 10-1 loss to the Albuquerque Isotopes at Isotopes Park. The loss gives the 'Topes the series win with still one game remaining in the three-game set.

Sounds starting pitcher Chris Narveson (2-5) had a rough night, allowing nine runs to the Isotopes over 4 1/3 innings. He allowed 12 hits to Albuquerque batters, the most surrendered by a Sounds pitcher this season, to take his fifth loss. He fanned one and walked one.

With two outs in the first inning, Rusty Ryal, 3-for-4, hit a ball into shallow right field. Hainley Statia called off second baseman Scooter Gennett and dove for the ball, but was unable to come up with the out. Instead Albuquerque had runners on the corners.

Narveson offered a walk to Chili Buss to load the bases, before Justin Sellers, 4-for-5, hit a bases-clearing double. Sellers scored on the next play: a single from Brian Barden that put Nashville in an early 4-0 hole.

The 'Topes added two more runs in the third inning on back-to-back home runs. Buss sent the first homer to dead centerfield and Sellers followed with his shot to left.

The Sounds last allowed back-to-back jacks on Friday against the Memphis Redbirds' Jamie Romak and Jermaine Curtis.

In the fourth inning, Ryal and Sellers both came up with RBI knocks to make it a 9-1 game. Ryal hit a single through the gap at second to score Matt Angle and Sellers' double past a diving Josh Prince scored two. Sellers finished with six RBIs.

Offensively, the Sounds scratched their lone run across in the top of the fourth inning courtesy of a solo home run by Hainley Statia. The utility player has four hits in his last 24 at-bats; each one has been a homer. He entered July having not hit a home run all season.

Caleb Gindl went 2-for-4 with two doubles, while Blake Davis finished 1-for-4. Prince picked up an infield single in the ninth inning to give Nashville five on the night.

Johnnie Lowe entered to record the final two outs of the fifth inning and returned in the sixth. He allowed the Isotopes their final run on Barden's RBI-single to right field. Relievers Michael Olmsted and Jesus Sanchez both pitched a scoreless inning for Nashville.

Matt Palmer (5-3) guided Albuquerque from the hill to pick up his fifth win. The right-handed pitcher held Nashville batters to one run on four hits across seven innings of work and struck out nine.

The 18 hits are the most allowed by Nashville since Albuquerque recorded 16 at Greer Stadium on May 24.

The Sounds will look to avoid the three-game sweep against the Albuquerque Isotopes on Wednesday night at Isotopes Park. Throwing for Nashville will be LHP Zach Kroenke (4-11, 4.41) against Albuquerque's RHP Matt Magill. Baseball returns to Greer Stadium on Thursday, July 11 for a BURGER KING Throwback Thursday, where fans can enjoy $2 beer and select concession items.

Via Great Falls Tribune notes column:

Angel Ortega was the Milwaukee Brewers’ sixth-round draft choice in 2012. He spent last season in the Arizona League and is starting at shortstop for Helena this year. He’s struggled at the plate so far, hitting just .177 (now .169).

“He just needs to settle in,” Helena manager Tony Diggs said. “He’s a real confident kid in what he can do.”

Ortega had a needed two-run single in the Brewers’ July 4 victory over the Voyagers.

“Sometimes he gets down on himself a little bit,” Diggs said. “But for him to take a break, settle down, get back in the box, take two tough pitches and then be able to drive the ball up the middle to drive in two runs, that’s pretty clutch.”

Brennan's Bomb Boosts Brewers

For second straight game, third baseman has winning hit

By Zac Vierra / Helena Brewers

Taylor Brennan has hit some moonshots this season for Helena and the slugging third baseman picked a good time to hit what might have been his longest bomb of the year.

With the Brewers trailing by a run in the sixth inning, Brennan crushed a ball that one-hopped the Westaff building beyond the left field screen at Kindrick Legion Field. It was a three-run homer, his fourth tater of the season, and it gave the Brewers their first lead in a game in which they had trailed Idaho Falls 5-0.

Helena would add two more in the eighth and hold on for a 9-5 win on Tuesday night in the first game of the four game set with the Chukars.

The Brewers entered the bottom of the sixth down 5-4 when Idaho Falls pitcher Juilo Rodriguez walked two and threw a pair of wild pitches to put two runners in scoring position. Rodriguez would get Michael Ratterree to pop up on the infield but was then replaced by Zeb Sneed.

Brennan (pictured below) then crushed Sneed's 0-1 splitter to give Helena its first lead of the game.

"It felt pretty good off the bat and it was good to see it go over the net," said Brennan.

It was the second consecutive game in which Brennan had the go-ahead hit for the Brewers.

Helena picked up some insurance in the seventh. With runners on first and second and two outs, Omar Garcia hit a fly ball deep in the corner in left that dropped in for a hit. As the ball rattled in the corner both runners came around to score and Garcia pulled up at second with his third hit of the night.

"I pretty much just had some fun today," said Garcia who had two steals in the game. "In the first few weeks I was a little nervous because it is my first year but I'm starting to relax now and just slow the game down."

Sean Albury and Tanner Poppe would close out the game in relief for Helena.

Idaho Falls jumped on Helena starter Brandon Moore in the second inning. Cody Stubbs hit a double to lead off the inning and he would score two batters later on a single to left by Frank Schwindel. With two on, and no outs the Chukars would extend the lead when Dominique Taylor hit a homer to left to make it 4-0.

The Chukars would get another run when Hunter Dozier hit a double down the left field line which scored Humberto Arteaga. That would be it for Moore on the night as he was replaced by Eduard Reyes.

Reyes ended up picking up the win in relief after allowing only one hit in 4.1 innings of work.

"Moore didn't have a good day today, that's why this is a team sport. Reyes comes in and picks him up and we did a good job the rest of the way with Albury and Poppe so they carried the load for him, they picked him up, and we were able to win the ballgame," said Helena Manager Tony Diggs.

A two-out error would end up haunting the Chukars in the bottom of the second as the Brewers started their comeback. With runners on first and second, Garcia hit a routine grounder to second but it ate up Carlos Garcia to load the bases and extend the inning.

Helena would take advantage as Ratterree hit a blooper down the right that fell in. When the ball got by the left fielder and went down the line, Ratterree slid into third with a bases clearing triple.

"If you can put the ball in play with runners on the bases chances are good things can happen. It wasn't a hard hit ball that he hit for a triple. It just happened to be in the right spot and drove in three runs," said Diggs.

Brennan would then slice a double to right that scored Ratterree and just like that it was a 5-4 ballgame.

Brennan would finish the game 2 for 5 with 4 RBI. The trio of Brennan, Garcia, and Ratterree drove in all nine runs from the top three spots in the order. The nine runs scored tied a season high for the Brewers.

"They are swinging the bats well we got a big three-run home run by Brennan to get us back into the game and keep us there. Offensively we are swinging the bat better," said Diggs.

The teams will be at it again on Wednesday night at Kindrick Legion Field. First pitch at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

Be sure you read the Jesus Sanchez feature just posted to our Sounds thread via the Tennessean. Can't think of a more interested party in all the Brewers reliever trade talk. Good numbers, 40-man roster status already in place.

Also a fantastic job by the Brewers pro scouting staff in identifying and signing the minor league free agent with the great backstory, only 23 when he became available.

Brevard's offense explodes late in 10-2 win

Cravy fans six in five frames as 'Tees thrash Threshers

By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - After a strong spot start from Tyler Cravy that left him in line for the win, the Brevard County Manatees' offense jumped on the Clearwater Threshers' bullpen to ensure a 10-2 victory on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Cravy (2-1, 3.13 ERA), who held the Threshers to just one run on three hits in five innings for the decision, was supported early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. He did not issue a walk and picked up six strikeouts, which marked a new season high.

Cravy has now allowed just two runs in his last 17 innings pitched over his past six appearances, including two starts.

Brevard County (10-8 second half, 47-38 overall) was led offensively by Nick Ramirez, who matched career highs with four hits and three runs. His four RBI also tied a season high.

Greg Hopkins also chipped in with a pair of hits, including an RBI double and three-run homer. It was his second four-RBI game this season. Hopkins also scored twice. Rafael Neda added two hits and drove in a pair, with Brandon Macias plating two on a double as part of a four-run seventh.

The Manatees stole a total of five bases, with two each from D'Vontrey Richardson and Ben McMahan, plus one from Macias. McMahan also drew three of the club's seven walks, which marked the second highest single-game total for the team this season.

Richardson led off the evening with a single to center and immediately picked up both of his steals. The first of Ramirez's hits sent him home, before Mitch Haniger scored on Hopkins' ground-rule double that hopped over the left field fence to give Brevard County a 2-0 lead after one inning.

Clearwater (9-8, 44-41) got its only run against Cravy in the second inning to make it a 2-1 game. After two straight strikeouts, Carlos Alonso singled and Brock Stassi tripled to straightaway center for the RBI.

Ramirez led off the third with one of his two doubles and then scored on a single from Neda that snuck just over the glove of leaping shortstop Miguel Abreu.

Again, the Threshers didn't allow the run to stay at two for long, with Dan Meadows surrendering the only other run that Clearwater would score. Abreu was hit by a pitch to open the sixth and put himself into scoring position by stealing second. A one-out RBI single from Cameron Perkins brought Abreu home and made it a 3-2 contest.

After three no-hit innings of relief from Daniel Carela, who relieved starting pitcher Ethan Stewart, the Manatees put together a strong two-out rally against Ken Giles in the seventh.

Giles retired the first two batters he faced on strikeouts, but then gave up a double to Ramirez and then a single to Cameron Garfield that would score Ramirez. After consecutive walks to Hopkins and McMahan, manager Chris Truby retrieved him from the mound with the bases still loaded.

Ryan O'Sullivan came on and promptly hit Neda with the first pitch to bring in a run and make it a 5-2 game. Macias then knocked a two-run double to blow it open at 7-2 before Richardson was also hit. In all, ten Brevard County hitters stepped to the plate during the seventh.

Another three runs came across in the eighth on a three-run blast by Hopkins, his fifth homer of the season and the first for the Manatees as a team since June 30.

Stephen Peterson tossed a scoreless seventh for the 'Tees and Santo Manzanillo followed by keeping the Threshers off the board in the final two frames.

Game two of the three-game series between Brevard County and Clearwater will be take place on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium, with first pitch set for 6:35 PM (5:35 Central).

Damien Magnifico (0-1, 7.11) set to take the mound for the Manatees. Opposing him will be southpaw Mario Hollands (4-1, 1.59) for the Threshers.

Brevard County starting pitcher Tyler Cravy recorded a season-high six strikeouts as he allowed one run on three hits in five innings of work in the Manatees' 10-2 win over the Clearwater Threshers on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)
