Did you see the Max Walla feature article this AM?

That 2009 draft (which will always be known as the Eric Arnett draft, unfortunately) has produced big-league talent -- heck, even for other teams, but little to nothing in terms of prospective star power.

18th round LHP Caleb Thielbar, who the Brewers unceremoniously released after just two pro seasons, still has an ERA of 0.00 (with an .083 batting average against) after his first 17 big league relief appearances for the Twins.

The '09 draft has seen Thielbar, Mike Fiers, Josh Prince, Hiram Burgos, Khris Davis, Sean Halton, and Scooter Gennett earn big league action.

Still pending on Arnett (of course), Kentrail Davis, Kyle Heckathorn, Walla, Cameron Garfield, Brooks Hall, and others.

Invest time with these three Helena pre-game interviews when you can:

Each highly recommended...

Milwaukee Brewers fielding/catching coordinator talks about the young catchers on the Helena team

(By the way, we learn Clint Coulter is day-to-day with a dinged knee, so any prior concussion speculation was incorrect.)

***

Helena Brewers trainer David Adling talks about life as an athletic trainer in the minors

***

Helena Brewers infielder Jalen Harris talks about his past in athletics and his how being born deaf has changed his life and his career

Fascinating how the little things on the field are impacted, like calling off your teammates on a pop-up; been waiting for this interview since Jalen turned pro -- thanks Steve (and Jalen!)

Bees bust Rattlers

Wisconsin falls behind and can't make up the difference in 5-3 loss at Burlington

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BURLINGTON, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers keep trying to play catch-up with the Burlington Bees. But, Burlington keeps holding on for victories over the Rattlers. Burlington grabbed a 4-1 lead on Sunday and held off a very late rally for a 5-3 victory at Community Field. Bees starter Tyler DeLoach struck out eight and allowed two runs over six innings to lead the Bees to their fourth straight win over the Timber Rattlers.

Wisconsin (35-47 overall, 6-11 second half) had early opportunities, but could not score first. They had a runner at second with one out in the first and runners at second and third with one out in the second. But, DeLoach escaped each jam.

The Bees (31-51, 5-12) took the lead in the bottom of the second. Exicardo Cayones singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Garrett Cannizaro would follow with a single to put runners on the corners with one away. Sandy Martinez drove in Cayones with a sacrifice fly to center and Burlington was up 1-0.

The Timber Rattlers tied the game in the top of the fourth. Victor Roache walked and Mike Garza, who had three hits for the Rattlers on the day, followed with a single to right that put runners on the corners with no outs. Parker Berberet knocked in Roache with a sacrifice fly to even the score.

But, Burlington responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead. Wade Hinkle singled and Cayones doubled into the corner in right to give the Bees runners on second and third with no outs. A slow grounder to third off the bat Chance Ross allowed Hinkle to score and Cayones to take third. Cannizaro was next and he sent a grounder up the first baseline with some wicked spin. Rattlers pitcher Tyler Wagner came over to try for a bare-hand pick of the ball and throw to the plate, but the ball spun out of Wagner's grasp and Cayones scored. Wagner still had time to retire Cannizaro at first, but the throw was wild. Cannizaro held at first and did not score in the inning, but the damage had been done.

Ross gave the Bees a 4-1 lead in the sixth when he hit a two-out solo home run off Wagner. The home run was the third of the season for Ross.

The Rattlers came back to get a run in the seventh. Max Walla singled to start the inning. That ended the day for DeLoach. Cam Bedrosian took over and threw a wild pitch that moved Walla to second. A ground out by Tyler Roberts put Walla on third. Chris McFarland's grounder to third got Walla home and the Rattlers were down 4-2.

But , Burlington added on in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Taylor Wall. A hit batsman and a one out walk but runners set the table to Cayones. The Bees left fielder smacked a single to right to drive in a run and the Bees led 5-2.

Wisconsin tried a last gasp rally in the top of the ninth against Kurt Spomer. Roberts doubled with one out and was replaced by pinch runner Adrian Williams. McFarland singled to drive in Williams and the Rattlers were within 5-3. Alfredo Rodriguez was next and his single put the tying runs on base. But, Spomer came back to strikeout Michael Reed. The McFarland and Rodriguez pulled a double steal with Tyrone Taylor at the plate. But, Taylor popped out to center on a 2-0 pitch and the Bees held on to beat the Rattlers for the second game in a row.

The final game of the series is Monday night at Community Field. Jorge Lopez (4-6, 5.37) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Ryan Crowley (7-3, 3.29) is scheduled to start for the Bees. Game time is 6:30pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm.

I am curious when Bradley will be back to game action. He hasn't pitched in a couple of weeks now and earlier this week was listed as today's probable starter. Hopefully he is back on the mound this week.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Final: Helena 9, @Great Falls 6 (10 innings)

Helena box score

Great Falls scored two in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game at six, but Helena roared back with three in the 10th to take the power back. The Brewers had only seven hits but walked eight times and were hit by a pitch against just six strikeouts.

Michael Ratterree lead the offense with two doubles, and Angel Ortega reached base three times via a single and two free passes. Charlie Markson had no hits but also drew two walks, which gives him five in the last two days after entering the weekend with only two. Everyone else in the lineup contributed, reaching base one way or another. Garrett Cooper did not play for the second straight day.

David Otterman pitched poorly in a three-inning start and has yet to strike out more batters than he walked in any of his four appearances this season. Tristan Archer was pretty good in relief of Otterman, allowing a solo homer in three innings but only one other hit while posting a 3/0 K/BB.

Helena play-by-play

So, uh, what happened here?

Great Falls Bottom of the 9th

  • Dillon Haupt grounds out, shortstop Angel Ortega to first baseman Jalen Harris.
  • Michael Carballo walks.
  • Adam Engel walks. Michael Carballo to 2nd.
  • Pitching Change: Andy Hillis replaces Juan Santiago.
  • Jairo Kelly singles on a fly ball to right fielder Michael Ratterree. Michael Carballo to 3rd. Adam Engel to 2nd.
  • Danny Hayes grounds into a force out, second baseman Renaldo Jenkins to shortstop Angel Ortega. Michael Carballo scores. Adam Engel scores. Jairo Kelly out at 2nd. Danny Hayes to 1st.
  • Zach Voight strikes out swinging.

How does a runner from second score on a forceout without an error being charged? Not a great game for Andy Hillis, who also walked the first two batters of the 10th before being bailed out by Ryan Fasano, but he keeps his perfect pro ERA despite picking up a blown save.

The winning rally:

Helena Top of the 10th

  • Charlie Markson flies out to right fielder Jacob Morris.
  • Michael Ratterree doubles (8) on a fly ball to center fielder Adam Engel.
  • Jose Pena walks.
  • Taylor Brennan doubles (2) on a line drive to left fielder Michael Carballo. Michael Ratterree scores. Jose Pena to 3rd.
  • Dustin Houle strikes out swinging.
  • Jalen Harris singles on a ground ball to right fielder Jacob Morris. Jose Pena scores. Taylor Brennan scores.
Angel Ortega walks. Jalen Harris to 2nd.
  • Renaldo Jenkins grounds into a force out, shortstop Jairo Kelly to second baseman Justin Jirschele. Angel Ortega out at 2nd.

(Congrats to Alex, a 28th round selection in this year's draft, on getting a chance in high-A ball)

VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees dropped their fourth straight game as they were defeated 2-1 by the Tampa Yankees on Sunday evening at Space Coast Stadium.

Both teams scored one run each in the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie, with the visitors plating the eventual game winner in the top of the ninth.

Each of Tampa's two runs were largely enabled by mistakes from the Brevard County (8-8 second half, 45-38 overall), as Rob Refsnyder scored first after taking a lead-off walk and advancing to second on a wild pitch from Manatees' starting pitcher Chad Pierce (4-3, 3.53 ERA). Saxon Butler provided the single that allowed the run to score and give the Yankees (7-6, 35-46) a 1-0 lead.

Despite the one run, Pierce turned in a quality spot start. He held Tampa to just two hits in his six innings of work, though he walked three to go along with his three strikeouts.

Dan Fiorito, batting in place of Alex Rodriguez, led off the ninth with a single and moved up to second when Brandon Macias couldn't cleanly field a grounder to third. A wild pitch from Santo Manzanillo put Fiorito on third, from where he scored on a Yeral Sanchez sacrifice fly.

Rodriguez, who was with Tampa for the second straight night as part of his Major League rehab assignment, was the team's designated hitter and batted second in the order. Rodriguez went 0-for-3 and grounded into an inning-ending double play in the sixth inning.

Manzanillo was hung with the loss despite the run that he allowed being unearned. It was his second losing decision in as many appearances with Brevard County this year.

The Manatees once again saw production from the bottom of the lineup, as Lance Roenicke followed his four-hit performance on Saturday with a hit and a run scored on Sunday.

After Roenicke reached on a one-out single in the fifth, Brandon Macias singled to right, moving Roenicke to third. D'Vontrey Richardson followed with a hot shot at third baseman Peter O'Brien to bring the run home.

Brevard County will look to avoid the three-game sweep in Monday's finale that is set for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch. Jacob Barnes (6-2, 3.44) is set to take the hill for the Manatees against Bryan Mitchell (4-8, 4.75) and the Yankees.

Brevard County Box Score

All five Manatees hits today were singles:

BC Hitters

D'Vontrey Richardson: 1-1, 2 BB, RBI

Despite the lack of offensive production, Manatees pitchers held Tampa to just four hits:

BC Pitchers

Chad Pierce: 6.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR, 1 WP

Matt Miller: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR

Santo Manzanillo(L, 0-2): 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 0 HR, 1 WP

    -Peter O'Brien walks.
-Gary Sanchez walks. Peter O'Brien to 2nd.

Tampa Top of the 3rd

  • -Ali Castillo grounds out, third baseman Brandon Macias to first baseman Nick Ramirez.
-Ben Gamel pops out to third baseman Brandon Macias in foul territory.

Sounds Blown Out In Series Finale, 13-3

Nashville's Hunter Morris Logs 18th Home Run In Loss

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds were unable to figure out either side of the Memphis Redbirds Sunday night at AutoZone Park, who limited Nashville to three hits in the decisive 13-3 loss. As a result, Memphis wins the four-game series 3-1.

Trailing 4-0 in the fourth inning, Sounds slugger Hunter Morris came up with a three-run home run to right field to pull Nashville to within one. The homer, Morris' 18th of the season, scored Scooter Gennett and Josh Prince.

Gennett reached base in the inning on a leadoff single into right field, which extended his hitting streak to a season-best 12 games. He has recorded a hit in each game since returning to the Sounds from Milwaukee on June 27.

But any momentum the fourth may have offered Nashville was halted by a stellar performance from Redbirds' starting pitcher Tyler Lyons (4-1), who picked up his fourth win by limiting Nashville to two hits across eight innings.

The lefty set down the Sounds in order in seven of his eight innings pitched, striking out nine and walking one. Reliever Victor Marte combined for the three-hitter, pitching a scoreless eighth. Caleb Gindl rapped a two-out double for the Sounds only other hit.

While the Sounds struggled at the plate, the Redbirds pulled away in the eighth inning with eight runs.

Reliever Michael Olmsted took the hill for Nashville in the frame and faced all nine Memphis batters, allowing seven runs on four hits and three walks. He exited with the bases loaded and one out to go.

Travis Webb entered to attempt to record the inning's final out, but Adron Chambers hit a grand slam that was ruled just inside fair territory over the right-field wall. Webb disputed that the ball went foul and was ejected by first base umpire Hal Gibson III. Tim Dillard entered to record the final out.

The Redbirds scored initially in the first inning, working the bases loaded before Chambers hit a sacrifice fly to center field for the 1-0 lead. Then in the third inning, Sounds starter Hiram Burgos (1-4) was touched for two home runs to give Memphis a 4-0 advantage.

Kolten Wong, 2-for-4, connected for a lead-off blast, which was followed later by Jamie Romak's 19th of the season.

Burgos took the loss, his fourth, allowing four runs on five hits across three innings of work. Reliever Kyle Heckathorn followed Burgos with his longest effort of the season, going four innings and holding Memphis to one run and two hits.

The Sounds will head west to New Mexico to begin a three-game series with the Albuquerque Isotopes (Dodgers affiliate). Throwing for Nashville will be RHP Jimmy Nelson (1-2, 2.30) against an Albuquerque pitcher to be announced. Baseball returns to Greer Stadium on Thursday, July 11 for a BURGER KING Throwback Thursday, where fans can enjoy $2 beer and select concession items.
