Final: DSL Blue Jays 1, DSL Brewers 0

DSL Brewers Box Score

Not much to talk about in today's game. Victor Diaz allowed just one run over five innings, but wound up taking the loss as that was the only run of the ballgame. He gave up four hits and walked three. Felix Paulino continued his dominant season with four scoreless innings. At 22-years-old I'm not sure what kind of prospect he is, but his results have been impressive thus far, allowing just two runs in 24.1 innings.

The Brewers managed just one hit against the Blue Jays pitchers, a single by left fielder Juan De Los Santos. Juan Ortiz and Yerald Martinez each drew a walk, but both were cut down trying to steal and that was it for the Brewers offense. Defensively, Raphachel Colatosti had a rough day at third base, committing two errors.

DSL Brewers Play-By-Play

The only run of the game came on a second inning triple by Blue Jays right fielder Juan Tejada

DSL Blue Jays Top of the 2nd

Juan Kelly walks.

Ronniel Demorizi grounds out, second baseman Jorge Quiterio to first baseman Juan Ortiz. Juan Kelly to 3rd.

Final: Huntsvile 8 Tennessee 2

The Huntsville Stars broke out of their offensive slumber Saturday evening, scoring in each of the first 4 innings, knocking out 12 hits and scoring 8 runs in defeating the Tennessee Smokies 8-2. The Stars first 5 hitters of the game reached base and by the end of their half of the first, they staked Southern League All Star Taylor Jungmann to a 3-0 lead. Jungmann (9-6, 3.53) earned his Southern League leading 9th win by going 6 2/3 innings, allowing 2 runs, both earned on 7 hits and 1 walk while striking out 7. Both Smokies runs scored on solo home runs. Jungmann threw 87 pitches, 57 for strikes and had another monster GO/FO ratio of 9-1. Jungmann's first pitch of the game was clocked at 93 tonight.

The Stars bullpen provided 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief. Frankie De La Cruz finished the 7th and pitched the 8th tonight. He allowed no runners to reach and struck out 1. Righty Eric Marzec continued his All Star like (SNUBBED!!!) relief, working a scoreless 9th, allowing a hit and striking out a batter, lowering his ERA to 2.16.

Huntsville Box Score

After being held to solo runs in each of the first 2 games of the series, the Stars jumped on Smokies starter Austin Kirk early and often. Every Stars position player reached base tonight. Kentrail Davis led the hit parade, goint 3-6 with a double, 2 runs scored and an RBI. Catcher Adam Weisenburger collected 2 more hits and 2 RBI's and shortstop Hector Gomez singled twice and drew a walk. Left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard was held hitless tonight, but reached base 4 times, 3 walks and a HBP. Kjeldgaard scored a run and drove in a run. Third baseman Mike Walker reached base 3 times, a single and 2 walks. Chadwin Stang and Shea Vucinich each reached twice, a single and a walk and drove in a run. Final: Memphis 7 Nashville 2

The Memphis Redbirds got strong pitching from starter Nick Additon and 2 relievers to knock off the Nashville Sounds 7-2 Saturday night in Memphis. Sounds starter R.J. Seidel (1-4, 5.94)struggled tonight. He only lasted 4 1/3 innings, giving up 4 runs, all earned on 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4. 2 of the 3 his Seidel allowed were home runs, bringing his Pacific Coast League total to 10 in 50 innings. Seidel threw 84 pitches, 52 for strikes and posted a 7-3 ground out to fly out ratio. His line could have been worse if not for Tim Dillard's work in the 5th. Dillard came on with the bases loaded and 1 out and was able to get a strike out and a ground out to get out of the inning. Unfortunately, the 6th was not kind to Tim. The Redbirds were able to score 3 runs on 4 hits to blow the game open. Dillard finished with a line of 1 2/3 innings, 3 runs, all earned, on 4 hits with 1 strike out and a 4-0 GO/FO ratio. 2 of the 4 hits were on ground balls, so his sinker was definitely working.

The Sounds got a scoreless 8th inning from Travis Webb and Rob Wooten continued to push for a promotion to Milwaukee by working a scoreless 9th, throwing 8 pitches, all for strikes.

Nashville Box Score

The Sounds offense was limited to 5 hits and 2 runs tonight. Hainley Statia provided the biggest hit, a solo home run in the 5th. It was his 2nd home run on the season. Josh Prince doubled and scored the other Sounds run. Scooter Gennett, Robinzon Diaz and Ozzie Chavez each singled for Nashville. First baseman Hunter Morris drove in his 45th run with a sacrifice fly in the 7th.

Sounds Dampened By Redbirds

Nashville's Hainley Statia Goes Deep In 7-2 Loss

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds were unable to keep pace with the Memphis Redbirds Saturday night at AutoZone Park, held to five hits in the 7-2 loss by Nick Additon (6-4) and company.

Additon retired the first 14 Nashville batters in order before outfielder Hainley Statia touched the lefty for a home run to left field. The homer, Statia's second in as many games after not having one since July 30, 2011, pulled the Sounds to within two, trailing 3-1 in the fifth.

The Redbirds pulled back out by three in the home half of the inning when Nashville shortstop Ozzie Chavez let a ground ball roll up his glove to squander what may have been an inning-ending double play. Instead, with runners on the corners and one out, the fielding error scored a run for Memphis.

Memphis furthered its lead in the seventh inning, plating three runs against reliever Tim Dillard to make it 7-1. Three singles started the inning, with Adron Chambers' single pushing Greg Garcia across. Additon advanced both runners into scoring position with his second sac-bunt of the night and Thomas Pham hit a single into left field to add the second run. A ground out scored Chambers.

Additon held Nashville to three hits across seven innings of work to pick up his sixth win of the season. The Sounds worked their second run off the lefty in the seventh when Hunter Morris lofted a fly ball to right field that scored Josh Prince on the sacrifice. Prince led off the inning with a double to left field.

The Redbirds got on the board first on Jamie Romak's 18th home run of the season in the second inning. The shot to the left-field bluff was the eighth allowed by Sounds starter R.J. Seidel (1-4) and put the 'Birds up 1-0.

Seidel walked Garcia with one out and the shortstop proceeded to steal two bags to line himself up for an easy jog to home plate on Chambers' sacrifice fly.

Memphis' Kolten Wong added to the Redbirds' advantage with a solo home run clearing the right-field wall in the third inning. Seidel took the loss, finishing with four runs on three hits over 4 1/3 innings. He fanned four Redbirds and walked three.

Dillard entered with one out and the bases loaded in the fifth inning and retired his first two to get Nashville out of the fifth-inning jam. After the sixth, Travis Webb and Rob Wooten pitched one scoreless frame each for Nashville.

Robinzon Diaz, Ozzie Chavez and Scooter Gennett recorded the Sounds final three hits in the game. Gennett legged out an infield single in his final at-bat to extend his hit streak to 11 games. Diaz has successfully reached base in each game he has started for Nashville.

The Sounds will conclude their series with the Redbirds on Sunday evening at AutoZone Park, looking to split the series. Throwing for Nashville will be RHP Hiram Burgos (1-3, 2.93) against lefty Tyler Lyons (3-1, 3.43). Baseball returns to Greer Stadium on Thursday, July 11 for a BURGER KING Throwback Thursday, where fans can enjoy $2 beer and select concession items.

Offensive Barrage, Jungmann Lead Stars to Win

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

After scoring just two runs in their previous two games, the Huntsville Stars broke out with seven runs in the first four innings on Saturday en route to a 8-2 victory against the Tennessee Smokies at Smokies Park.

For the Stars, the offensive barrage started early in the first inning when they hit four straight singles and the first five batters reached base against Smokies starting pitcher Austin Kirk. Highlighting the surge was an RBI single from first baseman Jason Rogers, a bases-loaded walk drawn by outfielder Brock Kjeldgaard and a sacrifice fly by catcher Adam Weisenburger that put the Stars up by 3-0.

Following a solo homer by Smokies shortstop Javier Baez in the bottom of the first inning, Huntsville was able to get that run back in the top of the second on an RBI double from outfielder Kentrail Davis that put the Stars back up by three.

In the third inning, Huntsville was able to chase Kirk out of the game with an RBI single from Mike Walker that made the score 5-1 with nobody out and runners on first and third. Smokies reliever Yepier Castillo came into the ballgame and only gave up one run, an RBI fielders-choice off the bat of outfielder Chadwin Stang to put the Stars up by five. That run was tabbed to Kirk, who fell to 1-3 on the year after giving up six runs on seven innings in two innings.

After the Stars tacked on another run in the fourth on an RBI single from Weisenburger, Tennessee got one back on a solo homer from third baseman Christian Villanueva off of Stars starting pitcher Taylor Jungmann.

The two solo homers were the only runs the Smokies were able to score off of Jungmann and the rest of the Stars pitching staff as the 23-year-old improved to 9-6 on the season with the victory. Jungmann gave up just two runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings pitched while striking out a season-high seven batters. His nine wins leads the entire Southern League and he is now 8-2 in his last 11 starts dating back to the first week in May.

Aside from Jungmann, relievers Frankie De La Cruz and Eric Marzec blanked the Smokies bats over the last 2.1 innings of the game.

The Stars scored their other insurance run in the 9th inning on a sacrfice fly by second baseman Shea Vucinich.

On offense, the Stars churned out twelve hits, with Davis leading the way with a 3-for-6 night at the plate. Weisenburger and shortstop Hector Gomez each chipped in with two hits apiece.

The victory for the Stars snaps a four-game losing streak against the Smokies and a two-game losing skid overall.

On Sunday, the Stars will play game four of a five-game series at Smokies Park against the Smokies. Huntsville will send RHP David Goforth (1-1, 8.31 ERA) to the bump while Tennessee will counter with all-star RHP Kyle Hendricks (8-2, 2.06 ERA). First pitch is 5:00 PM (4:00 Central).

Final: Burlington 7 Wisconsin 6

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers came up on the short end Saturday night against the Burlington Bees, falling 7-6 at Community Field. Righty Eric Semmelhack started for the Timber Rattlers and had a rough go of it. Semmelhack (1-4, 4.68) went 4 innings, giving up 6 runs, all earned on 9 hits and 2 walks while striking out 1. He also threw a wild pitch and committed a balk. 2 of the 9 hits were home runs, giving him 12 on the season, 2nd most in the Midwest League. He had a 4-4 ground out to fly out ratio.

Cuban right hander Rodolfo Fernandez came on to work in the 5th. Fernandez worked 3 1/3 good innings. He was charged with 1 run on 3 hits, 1 walk and a HBP while striking out 2. Fernandez also had a 5-0 GO/FO ratio. Rodolfo ran into problems in the 8th. A single and a hit batter, then after a sacrifice bunt, an intention walk loaded the bases. Lefty Michael Strong was summoned from the bullpen. He walked the first batter he faced. The Timber Rattlers dugout must have felt like Strong was getting squeezed as hitting coach Dusty Rhodes was ejected after the walk. Strong beared down and retired the next 2 batters to get out of the inning. Unfortunately, the Timber Rattlers were behind and unable to score in the top of the 9th.

Wisconsin Box Score

Every Timber Rattler hitter reached base at least once tonight. Michael Garza, Adam Giacalone, and Max Walla each had 2 hits. Garza had a single and a triple, drove in a run and scored a run. Bees edge Rattlers with late run

Burlington takes game one of series with 7-6 decision

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

07/06/2013 10:46 PM ET

BURLINGTON, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers battled the Burlington Bees at Community Field through all nine innings on Saturday night. But, the Bees squeaked out an 8-7 victory on an early barrage of runs and a late rally that took advantage of some wildness of the part of the Rattlers pitchers.

Burlington (30-51 overall, 4-12 second half) grabbed the lead with four runs in the bottom of the third inning as they collected six hits and sent ten men to the plate against Wisconsin starter Eric Semmelhack. Wendell Soto started the inning with a bunt single and went to second on a wild pitch. Riley Good singled to drive in Soto for the first run of the inning. A balk sent Good to second. A single by Anthony Bemboom put Good on third. A double by Andrew Ray drove in Good for a 2-0 lead. Semmelhack walked the next batter to load the bases.

Exicardo Cayones drove in the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. Chance Ross made it 4-0 with an RBI single.

The Rattlers (35-46, 6-10) stormed back to tie the game in the top of the fourth. The loaded the bases on a walk to Tyrone Taylor and singles by Mike Garza and Adam Giacalone. Max Walla drove in a pair of runs with a double. Tyler Roberts was next and his grounder to short got a pair of runners to score. The ground out was enough to get Giacalone home from third. The throwing error let Walla score from second to even the score 4-4.

The Bees hit a pair of home runs off Semmelhack in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead. Bemboom hit a line shot over the wall in right with one out to give the Bees a 5-4 lead. Wade Hinkle went the other way with two outs for a home run over the wall in left-center to put the Bees up 6-4.

The Rattlers scored a run in the top of the fifth. Victor Roache singled with two outs. Mike Garza sent him home with a triple to right-center.

Wisconsin tied the game in the top of the eighth inning. Walla singled with one out and Roberts blooped in a double to right field to put runners on second and third. Chris McFarland smacked a single off reliever Chris O'Grady. Walla scored as the ball trickled to the third base line. The Rattlers attempted a suicide squeeze with Roberts breaking from third, but it didn't work and the Bees escaped the eighth with the score tied.

Burlington mounted a rally in the eighth on a leadoff single, a hit batsman, a sacrifice bunt, and an intentional walk against reliever Rodolfo Fernandez. Wisconsin went to the bullpen and brought in lefty Mike Strong to face Bemboom, a left-handed batter. But, Strong walked Bemboom on four pitches to force in the go ahead run.

Taylor walked with one out in the top of the ninth inning. But, Bees closer Jairo Diaz retired the next two batters looking at strike three to finish the Rattlers.

The series continues Sunday afternoon at Community Field. Tyler Wagner (7-6, 3.46) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Tyler DeLoach (1-2, 3.27) is set to start for Burlington. Game time is 2:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 1:40pm.

Helena box score

Charlie Markson continues to hit--he was 1-2 with a double to boost his average to .349--but found a new way to get on base today by drawing three walks, which is one more than he had all season. Dionis Hinojosa had a similar game, singling and also drawing three walks, while Omar Garcia contributed two singles and drew a free pass of his own.

After a couple pretty nice outings, young lefty Anthony Banda struggled this time out, allowing four runs (albeit just one earned) in four innings while issuing five walks. In total, five of the six runs Helena allowed were unearned, courtesy of four Brewers errors (two by Nathan Orf).

With Clint Coulter still out and Dustin Houle needing a rest, Michael Turay caught his first game of the season; he split time between there and third base with Helena last year.

VIERA, Fla. - With one of the biggest superstars that the game of baseball has ever seen on their roster, the Tampa Yankees were able to take down the Brevard County Manatees, by the score of 6-1 on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium in front of 3,148 fans.

Alex Rodriguez, a 14-time Major League All-Star and three-time American League Most Valuable Player ended the first game of his rehab stint with Tampa by going 1-for-2 with a run scored. He was also hit by a pitch on the upper left thigh by Brevard County (8-7 second half, 45-37 overall) starting pitcher Cody Scarpetta, just below his surgically-repaired hip, and was retired at the front end of a double play following the hit.

In the field, Rodriguez snared a Greg Hopkins liner in the second and cleanly fielded both ground balls hit his way at third base.

However, the true story on the night for the Yankees was another Miami native, Peter O'Brien. He earned some positive comments from the big-leaguer in a post-game press conference, as O'Brien went 2-for-4 with five runs batted in, including three on a bases-clearing triple that scored Saxon Butler, Ben Gamel and Rodriguez to give Tampa (6-6, 34-46) a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning.

Scarpetta (0-3, 5.59 ERA) was handed the loss, taking responsibility for all three runs after he left the game with the bases loaded as O'Brien's three-run triple came against Stephen Peterson. Scarpetta surrendered two hits and four walks, while fanning a pair his 4.2 innings of work.

O'Brien also knocked in Jose Toussen for the final run, after Toussen notched a two-run double to plate Ali Castillo and Gamel in the seventh.

Lance Roenicke's first of a career-high four hits - a double in the second - drove in Cameron Garfield for the lone Manatees' run. Garfield and Roenicke combine for six of Brevard County's seven hits. Brevard County (8-7, 45-37) left nine men on base, drew just two walks and struck out seven times.

Rodriguez and the Yankees return to Space Coast Stadium on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. Chad Pierce (4-3, 3.75) is slated to take the hill for Brevard County against Tampa's Corey Black (2-7, 4.20).

Voyagers hold off Helena Brewers' rally

by Lee Vernoy, Great Falls Tribune Sports Writer

This is the one that almost got away.

But Anthony Santiago got Jalen Harris to fly to center with the bases loaded, the tying run at third, and two out in the ninth as the Great Falls Voyagers held on for a 6-5 win over the Helena Brewers in front of 1,074 fans Saturday night at Centene Stadium.

The win gives the Voyagers a 9-8 record in the Pioneer League North, putting them in a first-place tie with Helena going into this afternoon’s homestand finale.

Voyager skipper Pete Rose, Jr. brought in Eric Jaffe to close things out in the top of the ninth with his squad up 6-2. He walked Michael Turay for starters, but caught Angel Ortega looking for the first out. Jaffe then walked Dionis Hinojosa and Ruben Ozuna to load the bags, then fanned Omar Garcia for the second out.

That’s when Jaffe could not get the final out. Charlie Markson walked, Nathan Orf reached on a bunt single to third, and Taylor Brennan walked, making it 6-5 and forcing Rose to bring in Santiago, who got Harris to lift a lazy fly to centerfielder Adam Engel to end the game.

The Brewers took the early lead in the first. Garcia walked, the first of 11 free passes Great Falls pitchers would surrender, then Markson doubled to left, Garcia scoring on a wild throw by shortstop Tyler Shryock.

The Voyagers tied it in the second. Dillon Haupt scored when Jacob Morris grounded into a 5-4 fielders’ choice, but the throw to get Morris at first sailed over everyone and struck the retaining wall behind the first base dugout.

Things stayed knotted at one until the last of the fifth. Justin Jirschele and Engel singled back-to-back, before Shryock bunted to the left of the mound. Brewer starter Anthony Banda picked up the ball and threw wildly over the first baseman’s head to plate Jirschele. Danny Hayes walked to load the bases, and Zach Voight was hit by a pitch to force home Engel.

Chris Razo replaced Banda, and induced Haupt to ground into a 6-4-3 double play that scored Shryock.

Brennan got one of those runs back in the sixth when he singled home Garcia, who reached on a bunt single, but the Voyagers came back with two insurance runs in their half of the sixth. Tyler Williams reached when Orf bobbled a grounder to second. Morris singled, and Williams went to third when Markson's throw from right field smashed against the fence in front of the Voyagers’ third-base dugout. One out later, Williams scored on a grounder to Ortega at shortstop, whose throw to catch Williams pulled Turay off the plate. One out later, it was Hayes who singled home Morris with what would be the winning run.

David Haselden (3-1) got the win by working five innings, striking out five, walking two and allowing three hits and an earned run. Santiago, the first Voyager hurler, got his first save. Banda got his second loss in as many decisions.

Engel led the hit parade for the Voyagers with two singles.

The Brewers and Voyagers close out the series and homestand this afternoon at 1:00 PM (2:00 Central).
