Here's a question. If BA/MLB can rank these kids with a top 30 in mind. And as the Brewers you have 2.227mil to use towards them. Why would target the lower rung 20/28th ranking? and not just go like KC or White Sox and just put the money on the kid with the highest prospect ranking for your money?

I like BA/MLB but ranking 16-year-old international prospects seems pretty nonsensical to me. Maybe there is a consensus generational-type talent every once in a while, but I don't think spending $2+ million on a 16-year-old (whatever "scouts" grade him) is really netting you a "very good prospect"

These players getting $750k-$3m are all relatively interchangeable I think. Maybe the guys at the higher end of that scale are slightly more impressive, but we're not talking a huge difference in baseball money/talent here.

I couldn't agree more. It's difficult enough to accurately scout and draft college and high school players, much less 16 year old kids. I'd rather sign 3-4 good young players than spend all our money on one player that BA has rated in the top 5 unless, as you say, they're a unique talent like Miguel Cabrera was.

So felt like checking up on the duo of Pierre/Mallen. It appears the DSL has begun and we're about 13 games in to their season.

Mallen:12Errors at SS in 13games. :( .250/.690OPS

Pierre: .300/.744OPS 4SBs :)

Both have 1HR thus far.

I went back to see who else to look at:

Johel Atencio a Catcher .306/.680OPS 21% CS rate No Errors thus far in 57 chances

Henry Correa a utility thus far 2b/ss/3b .095/.304OPS

Nelson Hernandez a 6'2" RHP Gotta like this thus far: 2GS 12ip! 7hits 3ERs 1BB/6Ks

Hernandez just may be worth following as well as Atencio besides Mallen/Pierre. Interesting on Hernandez is he was listed at 6'2" when signed and is still at 6'2"...which I would hope from 16-18 he'd grow another inch or 2. That would be awesome if he became a 6'4" pitcher who thus far appears having some control with just the 1BB in 12ip.

Depends on the egregiousness of the errors, but one could argue that's actually an encouraging stat because it means Mallen is getting to a lot of balls (although, given his age, is also a little unpolished). He only turned 17 a couple weeks ago.

Not sure about his DSL stats, but in his first season at Helena, Alcides Escobar had 21 E in 66 G.
