Brewers Sign No. 20 International Prospect Nicolas Pierre

Dominican outfielder Nicolas Pierre, the No. 20 international prospect for July 2, has signed with the Brewers for $800,000.

Pierre, 16, has an athletic 6-foot-3, 170-pound frame and made an impression with some scouts for his bat-to-ball ability from the right side of the plate and overall improvement as July 2 approached. He has good instincts in the outfield and has a chance to play center field. Pierre played in the International Prospect League and trains with Nelson Montes de Oca.

So the Rangers have just committed another 1.3mil to Marcos Diplan when their other two signings of Yeyson Yrizarri for $1.35MM and Jose Almonte for $1.8MM already put them over their slot with the 50% bonus.

So they should be losing a 1st round pick now no?

Well, with Pierre or actual last name being Figueroa, you have to like his body frame. He doesn't have a future scouting grade above average on MLB at this point. So that's disappointing. Hopefully gaining experience and filling out that frame he grades above average in a few areas.

This will keep being updated by BA over time. Pierre whom the Brewers already signed (linked by And That and now in the thread title) was the only prospect linked to the Brewers in the top 30.

Not until all is said and done, they can still trade for bonus pool space.

But as I read it, it's 50% of their allotment that they can traded for. And supposedly they did with the Marlins.

From 1.9427mil +50% so then they had 2,914,050 to spend max before penalties. Those 3 signings equal 4.45mil easily over slot with the bonus pool.

You might be correct, but the signing numbers might be slightly off and so on. I honestly don't know on day 1 how reliable the information is.

Here's a question. If BA/MLB can rank these kids with a top 30 in mind. And as the Brewers you have 2.227mil to use towards them. Why would target the lower rung 20/28th ranking? and not just go like KC or White Sox and just put the money on the kid with the highest prospect ranking for your money?

Gleyber Torres #2/3 ranking went to the Cubs for 1.7mil.

Throw 2mil at the kid and call it a day acquiring 1 very good prospect vs. 2 maybe 3 so-so maybe potential prospects.

MLB's read on Torres:

Scouting Grades* (present/future): Hit: 4/6 | Power: 4/6 | Run: 4/4 | Arm: 5/6 | Field: 5/5

The top player from Venezuela in this year's class, Gleyber does everything well. He has a smooth compact swing and the ball jumps off his bat. Scouts like that he can spray the ball all over the field with power and believe he has a chance to be a special hitter.

A solid defender, Torres has excellent hands, great feet and he's known to have an accurate arm with above-average strength. He's impressed scouts with his ability to make all of the routine plays and an occasional great play. He is particularly adept on his glove-hand side and continues to show improvement on all-around defense.

Torres isn't the biggest prospect on the field but he has an athletic build and is strong for his size. Scouts have taken notice of his baseball instincts and his leadership abilities, and he quickly built a reputation as a fundamentally sound player.

MLB's Read on Pierre:

Scouting Grades* (present/future): Hit: 3/5 | Power: 3/4 | Run: 4/5 | Arm: 4/5 | Field: 4/5

Figueroa, at 6-foot-3 and 175 pounds, has speed in the outfield and projects as a center fielder.

Overall, Figueroa has been praised for his wiry, projectable body and his above-average athleticism, but there is some concern about his lack of games. There are also some scouts that question his baseball instincts, but he is expected to get better with experience.

Figueroa has all the tools scouts are looking for and has shown that he can hit in games. His bat is said to be his best tool because he can spray the ball to all fields but he's also a good baserunner. However, Figueroa might not be the strongest prospect on the market and his strength could be one area of focus once he signs with a team

As a fan who would you be more excited for? Torres' scouting grades today rank about what Pierre's scouting grades for the future?

Just go out get the #1 talent for your money and be done with it.
