Aoki Trade Value

More on C.J. Edwards from baseball america.

This is from last year.

Ajax (Fairfax, VA): A lot of Ranger fans are excited about C.J. Edwards. How fast could he rise? How good of a prospect is he?

Bill Mitchell: Ajax, I'm a big, big CJ Edwards fan. I think he's got the arsenal and the attitude to move quickly, but keep in mind that he's still relatively inexperienced and needs to fill out his very lean frame. I saw one inning of his first instructs outing on Saturday and reports were that he was using his changeup more. With such a great feel for his secondary pitches and velocity that could someday be hitting triple digits, there's a lot to like about Edwards' future.

As for his delivery it is not quirky at all.

Batters are also only hitting .189 off of him so far this year. He is going to be a great pitcher and is currently ranked 15th on the Rangers top 20. http://texas.rangers.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2013/#list=tex

More on Edwards from baseball america:

http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/prospect-hot-sheet-george-springer-could-make-a-run-at-40-40/

No. 3 C.J. Edwards, rhp, Rangers

Team: low Class A Hickory (South Atlantic)

Age: 21

Why He’s Here: 1-0, 1.54, 11 2/3 IP, 11 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 15 SO, 2 BB

The Scoop: In the race to claim the honor of biggest breakout pitching prospect in the South Atlantic League, Edwards pulled into a slight lead over Pirates righty Tyler Glasnow with his performance in two starts this week. Edwards lowered his ERA to 1.95 (second in the SAL) and increased his punchout total to 113 (first, and three ahead of Glasnow). Perhaps most impressively, he has yet to allow a home run this season, and in fact no professional batter has taken him deep in 155 innings.

I believe he was just left off the updated top 50 list for Baseball America that came out a week or two ago. I believe he is in the top 100 right now.

Aoki is too valuable and cheap to just unload for a flier on a one time top prospect.

I guess it depends if you think the Brewers are going to compete in 2014. If you don't, I would unload him for the best offer whatever it may be and give Schafer the reins for the rest of the season. It would be better to find how his bat will play now, when planning for 2015. You still have Gindl and Halton as backups.

What I think isn't important. Melvin said on a telecast last week he's not going to trade anyone unless it makes the team better in 2014. His window is closing and he knows it. A case can certainly be made that thiis season is an aberration. Injuries and a muddled rotation can do that. But a rotation of Peralta, Lohse, Gallardo, and Gorzellany as the top 4 can certainly be competitive in 2014. Of course there's never any guarantees. That's why I don't think we'll see any deals of current major leaguers for A ball and rookie league players.

A case could be made that if Weeks could be packaged with Aoki, that whatever they got in return would represent an improvement for 2014, just with some addition by subtraction outweighing the loss of Aoki.

I think the Brewers are still stuck in baseball purgatory looking at 2014. Increasingly, I get the feeling no major deals will be made this year. Maybe a couple bullpen arms will move but I think that will be about it. Gallardo, Lohse, Weeks, Aoki, Ramirez, Hart and Henderson will all be back.

This strategy assumes so much though. Are Segura/Gomez for real? Will Yo bounce back? Will Hart and Ramirez get healthy? Will Braun be with the team all year? Is Weeks done? Does Lohse have one more year in him? Can Gorzelanny cut it in the rotation for a whole season? Can Peralta find the consistency to be as good as he has been the last few weeks? What kind of money do they have to add pieces?

If you really believe the answers to most of these questions are affirmative, then I think you have to hold onto those pieces. It just seems like way too many question marks for me.

I'm honestly tired of the window of opportunity strategy. It's unsustainable and shortsighted.

Exactly and to add to that, why are we striving for the playoffs every few years and "competitiveness" the rest of the time? Why can't we try to sustain playoffs or at least playoff contention consistently? Why does it always have to be one year going all in followed by three of mediocre baseball?

He also said previously in an interview with the JS that any trade he'd make would be for 2-3 years down the road, and they can't afford to be making trades focused on winning now. Melvin is hard to read. He keeps things pretty close to the vest. I guess we'll find out what direction they are going when the deadline comes around, but also with what they do in the offseason.

Looking at Philly's potential trade pieces. Jesse Biddle seems to be a too coveted guy and too much for Aoki in trade. You then have Maikel Franco a 3b that has jumped in the prospect rankings who could be a great 3b addition long term for Milwaukee. Philly also picked some HS Pitching last year that could be thrown in with Franco: Shane Watson and Mitch Gueller. Gueller seems to possess the Power Arm, something the Brewers have targeted of late, so I'd think Gueller would be the target over Watson.

I didn't mention Ethan Martin but he too could be a target.

A question for those guys who are in the know about Minor League prospect valuation:

Does anyone think we could get Joey Gallo from Texas for Aoki?

Imo the easiest way to answer these questions is to always flip it around & ask yourself if you'd sell this player in exchange for 1+ season of this player.

In short, if I'm the Rangers, no I wouldn't consider moving Gallo for 1+ season of Aoki. If I'm moving a 1st/supplemental round pick who, at 19 years old is living up to his gigantic power potential in A-ball, I'd better be getting back a better return than 1+ seasons of a pretty average or replaceable corner outfielder.

@TLB:

I definitely get what you are saying about trade valuation. I guess my question is more about what it appears Gallo is profiling as right now. Those numbers in 2013 seem Carlos Pena or Branyan-esque. 3TO. For a team that is admittedly desperate to make a move for an OF bat and apparently have been turned down multiple times in attempts to get Giancarlo (I assume Profar was included in those proposals), would a solid, but replaceable bat like Aoki get the deal done considering the Rangers are playing for the World Series in 2013 and likely in 2014. While I wouldn't do the trade from Texas' end given Aoki is 31, I always have to remind myself that I have a small market mentality when it comes to deals like this. Gallo would be a lot more easily replaced by a large market team like Texas than by a small market team like Milwaukee.

For Texas, they're absolutely stacked in the middle infield. The Rangers already have Kinsler, Andrus and Profar, with Luis Sardinas and Rougned Odor coming behind them.

If I'm them, I'm trying to use Sardinas or Odor in a deal, that's their depth.

I'm curious if Gomez could net Profar. Profar's value is at middle IF, not so much at DH or OF, and as Splitter put it, Texas is stacked in the middle infield. I'd wager that Gomez would be more valuable to the Rangers over the next 3 years than Profar would. In turn, the Brewers would have a gold glove caliber middle infield, with a solid defensively Schafer behind them. Positions of strength to address a position of weakness. That being said, I don't see the Brewers dealing Gomez.

Gomez clearly isn't on the trade block so keep dreaming. And Profar is on his 1st year so there's 5 years remaining now after the season.

As to the Joey Gallo for Aoki? Well, most trades seem to come from a position of depth for a position of need by a buyer. Of course Texas didn't part with their depth last season with Profar/Olt. I don't think Gallo is a position of depth anymore with Olt gone. He's actually probably going to replace Beltre in the 2-3 years he's left in the minors equal to Beltre's contract.

And to answer TLB's question back would I trade Gallo for Aoki? Probably no.

Would I trade the 5 years remaining for Martin Perez for Aoki? Well, with the Cruz suspension looming, Perez's floundering AGAIN. Yeah.

That's a SP though that straight up for Aoki, I could live with. Though, that still leaves Texas needing a SP slot to fill so it's very unlikely.

So move on down to the minors players, and as Splitter said, Sardinas/Odor are the trade bait. Did anyone take notice of the international signings this year? Texas picked up MORE Middle Infielders so they pretty much already have Sardinas/Odor covered if 1 or both are traded away. By the current numbers/ I'd have Sardinas available as his numbers as a hitter aren't that appealing and his main prospect ranking is on his Defense Field/Arm ability. Sardinas has 107hits...18 of them XBH. Odor 114hits 42XBH I know who I want. So I know who I'd put out there in trade, not to mention Sardinas still stands as a higher ranked prospect today over Odor but end of the year? 1 year from now? Good chance that changes unless Sardinas finds more barrel on the ball and drives it.

I'd do it in a heartbeat personally if I'm Texas Aoki for Sardinas. Putting Aoki atop the lineup would have to be a huge gain for Texas.

Please reread my post. There was no mention of Gomez being on the block. I'm just curious on Gomez's current trade value and I would certainly make him available if the return is sufficient.

Yes, Profar has less than a year of service time, but Gomez is only under contract for the next 3 years. That was the point. Gomez should be more valuable than Profar over the next 3 years. Is he enough of an upgrade for a contending team in years 1-3 to make up for years 4-6 of Profar?

Glad we're hanging on to a slap hitting corner outfielder with a little over a year left of control when we have a bunch of young outfielders that would benefit from some playing time.
