Link Report for Mon. 7/1 - Sounds, Stars, "Tees and Rattlers All Victorious

Final: @Missoula 5, Helena 0

Helena box score

The final score belies a fine start from lefty Anthony Banda, his second quality outing in a row with the peripherals to match. Tonight he went seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk while fanning six and posting a 7/2 GO/FO. Estevenson Encarnacion let in three unearned runs in the 8th to blow open what had been a close game.

Tough game for the hitters. The Brewers struck out only twice but managed just three hits, for an execrable (and unlucky) .115 BABIP. They didn't do themselves any favors by drawing no walks, though. Hot-hitting Michael Ratterree was moved up to second in the order and went 1-3. Tough game for Angel Ortega, who was back atop the order but went 0-4 with two throwing errors. Clint Coulter had the day off.

Helena play-by-play

Osprey, Perez shut out Brewers

Ravalli Republic (Hamilton, MT)

It was a happy Canada Day indeed for the Missoula Osprey.

Perhaps the Canadian holiday was an afterthought for the O’s, however, as they earned their second victory in as many nights over the Helena Brewers, a 5-0 win in front of 1,720 fans Monday at Ogren-Allegiance Park.

And the only thing hotter than the weather was Missoula’s pitcher.

Felipe Perez threw a complete-game shutout en route to his second win of the season.

“That was an unbelievable performance by Felipe Perez tonight,” Osprey manager Robby Hammock said. “Definitely one of the best pitching performances I’ve seen at any level. He pitched to one batter over the minimum, which is unheard of.

“Complete games are tough. Then to pitch to one batter over the minimum? That’s pretty special.”

Missoula improved to 5-6 in the Pioneer League standings behind Perez, while Helena dropped to 7-5.

The righty struck out just one batter, but surrendered just three hits and didn’t allow a walk on 83 pitches.

“I’m pretty pumped right now,” said Perez, who is 2-1 this season. “The adrenaline is still rushing. It’s two if not one all-time for me in performances. It’s up there.

“Plus, it’s my first complete game at this level, so it’s really big.”

After a scoreless first inning, the Osprey gave Perez a cushion by notching two runs in the bottom of the second.

Missoula catcher Jose Queliz hit an RBI double to score designated hitter Wagner Mateo to break the 0-0 tie. Left fielder Chuck Taylor then sent Queliz home with an RBI single on a hard grounder to give the Birds a 2-0 edge.

It was then up to Perez and his defense to protect the lead.

Perez didn’t allow a hit after the fifth inning as his teammates turned three double plays.

“We played tremendous defense,” Hammock said. “The guys turned some double plays and they made some big plays that don’t really show up at all. Bianco made a play off the wall to keep the guy to a single. Then a couple batters later, double play.

“We made some diving plays and caught a couple line drives – that’s how you play the game.”

Perez noticed his team’s contributions as well.

“My team had my back the whole game,” he said. “I knew if something was in the air or something was on the ground, it was going to be an out. I wasn’t worried at all.”

Just as Missoula enjoyed a strong performance on the mound, Helena’s Anthony Banda was solid as well.

Despite dropping to 0-1 as a pitcher, Banda threw seven solid innings, allowed two runs off six hits, gave up one walk and racked up six strikeouts.

The lefty was replaced by Estevenson Encarnacion in the eighth, and the Osprey took advantage.

Missoula added three runs in the bottom of the frame on a pair of hits, a walk and two errors.

The O’s scoring was capped by a two-RBI single by shortstop Joe Munoz.

“That was big,” Hammock said of his team’s three-run eighth inning. “It was all set up by (Jake) Mayers. Mayers busted his butt down the line with two outs on a meaningless ground ball to shortstop. All of a sudden, it puts the pressure on them, they rush, throw it away, and then Mateo comes up with a big knock after that and Munoz had an even bigger knock after that.”

With a five-run lead, Perez was three outs away from a complete-game victory.

And Hammock said there was no hesitation in his decision to leave Perez on the mound.

“None at all,” he said. “His pitch count was down, he was still very effective, he was efficient and it was his game.”

Fittingly, Perez closed out the game with just his second K, which Helena shortstop Angel Ortega watched go by.

“I felt pretty good the whole game,” Perez said. “I was just working the count and working the hitters.”

Although Perez is not scheduled to pitch in Tuesday’s doubleheader against Billings, the right-hander said he wouldn’t flinch if asked to pitch again.

“I’m feeling good,” he said. “I’ll go another nine right now.”

Stars Mount Second Straight Comeback

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

A night after a come-from-behind walkoff win, the Huntsville Stars completed another comeback, turning a 4-0 deficit into a 9-5 victory against the Chattanooga Lookouts on Monday night at Joe Davis Stadium.

For the second game in a row, the Lookouts got out to an early lead against the Stars pitching staff. Following four scoreless innings from Stars starting pitcher David Goforth, Chattanooga got after the Philadelphia, MS native in the fifth inning. With runners on first and third with one out, an RBI single from catcher Matt Wallach put the Lookouts on the board. During the next at-bat, a wild pitch from Goforth plated another runner to make the score 2-0.

The Lookouts continued that success into the sixth inning, where a two-run double from outfielder Jon Garcia put Chattanooga up by four.

However, the Stars were able to mount a large comeback for the second straight game against the Lookouts.

After being no-hit by the Lookouts hurlers through five innings for the second straight game, the Stars offense finally woke up in the bottom of the sixth against Chattanooga starting pitcher Andres Santiago. Following a leadoff double from first baseman Mike Walker and a pinch-hit walk by Jason Rogers, outfielder Chadwin Stang came through with an RBI single, scoring Walker to put the Stars on the board. After a walk issued to outfielder Kentrail Davis loaded the basis, Santiago was taken out of the ballgame in favor of righty Jahrel Cotton.

The 21-year-old reliever was greeted to the game by a bases-clearing double from third baseman Shea Vucinich to tie up the ballgame. Following another walk drawn by outfielder Rene Tosoni, catcher Adam Weisenburger came through with a two-run triple off of Cotton that gave the Stars their first lead of the night.

Fortunately for Huntsville, they continued that momentum into the seventh inning against Lookouts reliever Steve Smith. After consecutive walks issued to Rogers (who stayed in the game during a double-switch after the sixth inning) and Stang, back-to-back-to-back RBI singles by second baseman Nick Shaw, Davis and Vucinich put the Stars up by a score of 9-4.

Chattanooga scored their only other run in the eighth inning as a byproduct of two defensive miscues by the Stars infield with reliever Arcenio Leon on the hill.

On the pitching side, Goforth earned his first Double-A victory, improving to 1-1 on the season with the Stars after giving up four runs and six hits in six innings while striking out seven batters.

From an offensive perspective, the six-run sixth inning for the Stars was the second time in the last six games that the Stars have scored six or more runs in one single inning.

With the victory, the Stars have won two games in a row for the first time since May 29-30th against the Jackson Generals.

On Tuesday, the Stars and Lookouts will play game four of a five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium. Huntsville will send RHP Brooks Hall (0-2, 9.82 ERA) to win the Stars their first series in their last seven tries. Chattanooga will counter with RHP Duke Von Schmann (1-0, 3.43 ERA). First pitch is at 6:43 PM.

LINK INCLUDES POST-GAME VIDEO INTERVIEW WITH TYRONE TAYLOR (with many of the quotes below)

Rattlers Report: Taylor, Berberet power Wisconsin to victory

by Tim Froberg, Post-Crescent Media

GRAND CHUTE — Tyrone Taylor’s game was supposed to be speed, and the 19-year-old outfielder can certainly fly.

What makes him an even hotter prospect is that he has added power to his tool box.

Taylor opened the season as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers’ leadoff hitter but has shown more punch than anticipated and continued to give the baseball the Roy Hobbs’ treatment Monday night in a 4-3 victory over Kane County.

Taylor knocked in Wisconsin’s first run with his team-high 23rd double and extended his hitting streak to 15 games, the second longest in the Midwest League this season.

“I try not to think about it, really,” said Taylor, Milwaukee’s second-round selection in the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft. “I’m just trying to have good at-bats and make contact at the plate.”

Taylor’s contact is translating into a steady stream of base hits, several going for extra bases.

He hit below .250 in the cold-weather months of April and May but has pushed his batting average to a team-high .310 following a torrid June in which he batted a robust .438 (42-of-96) with nine doubles, a triple, three homers and 13 RBI.

“The weather has warmed up and that’s definitely helped,” said Taylor, who went one-for-two Monday night with a pair of walks. “I’m just trying to stay within myself, and I’m doing a good job of that.”

Taylor is Wisconsin’s team leader in home runs (six), RBI (35), total bases (130) and slugging percentage (.459). He is second in stolen bases with 14.

“I don’t know if you can say enough about Tyrone Taylor right now,” said Wisconsin manager Matt Erickson. “He’s become our biggest extra-base threat. He’s got some ability and he’s got great character. He’s a humble young man and he’s hungry to learn. He knows he can get a lot better. It’s been a lot of fun to watch him develop.”

With 3,883 fans watching on Jonathan Lucroy Bobblehead Giveway Night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium, Taylor and the Timber Rattlers rallied from 3-1 deficit.

Wisconsin (32-44) tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when catcher Parker Berberet socked a two-run homer to left center off Kane County starter Jose Rosario. It was Berberet’s third homer of the season and followed a two-out walk to first baseman Adam Giacalone.

“I was just seeing the ball well off that guy (Rosario) and had just missed pitches my first two times up,” said Berberet. “I went up there knowing he was going to attack with the fastball after walking Giacalone on four pitches. I was looking for something up in the zone and got the barrel through and took it out.”

The Rattlers pushed across the game-winning run without a hit in the eighth, loading the bases on an error and two walks. Outfielder Victor Roache then delivered a sacrifice fly.

“It was one of those games where you felt, “Hey, we’re going to come back and win this,’ ” said Berberet. “If we continue with that attitude, we’re going to be a tough team the second half.”

Wisconsin received solid pitching from starter Eric Semmelhack and reliever Martin Viramontes. Semmelhack allowed one earned run (three total) on six hits with four strikeouts and just one walk in seven innings. Viramontes finished up with two hitless shutout innings.

“We got a good quality start from Semmelhack, and it was nice to go through a game with two pitchers,” said Erickson. “We were able to come back and make it fun for everybody.”

Sounds Walk Off Against Round Rock, 3-2

Gennett, Morris Homer For Nashville; Three Pitchers Hold Express To Two Hits

Nashville Sounds

Scooter Gennett watches his 4th inning HR (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds scored an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth inning to claim a 3-2 victory over the Round Rock Express in the opener of a three-game series on Monday evening at Greer Stadium.

In the Nashville ninth, Khris Davis legged out a one-out infield single against Nate Robertson (2-4) and later stole second with two outs to place himself in scoring position for Caleb Gindl, who hit a grounder to second base that was booted by Yangervis Solarte to allow Davis to race home with the game-winning run.

The win was just the second walkoff victory of the year for Nashville (30-55). In the contest, three Sounds pitchers held Round Rock to two hits.

Second baseman Scooter Gennett, who has been swinging a hot stick since rejoining the Sounds last week, gave Nashville a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with a leadoff homer to right. The blast off Express starter Ryan Feierabend was the infielder's second roundtripper of the season.

Gennett went 2-for-3 on the night and has hit safely in all six games at a .381 clip (8-for-21) since being optioned from Milwaukee.

Sounds starter R.J. Seidel worked hitless baseball through his first 4 2/3 frames. After walking his first batter faced, the right-hander retired the next 14 Round Rock hitters in a row to tie the longest such stretch by a Nashville hurler this season (Michael Olmsted).

After issuing a two-out walk to Jim Adduci, Seidel gave up the first and only hit of his five-inning stint -- a two-out, two-run homer to left off the bat of Express designated hitter Mike Bianucci, which propelled the visitors to a 2-1 lead.

Seidel took a no-decision after allowing two runs on the one hit while walking a pair of batters and striking out six in his five-inning, 75-pitch effort.

First baseman Hunter Morris knotted the score at 2-2 in the seventh with a two-out solo homer to right off Feierabend, the slugger's team-leading 15th big fly of the year.

Nashville had opportunities to reclaim the lead in both the seventh and eighth innings but failed to capitalize. Khris Davis followed Morris' homer with a triple but was stranded on third as Josh Prince flew out to end the frame. In the eighth, Nashville loaded the bases with one out against Feierabend before Round Rock reliever Cory Burns took over and got Hainley Statia to ground into a fielder's choice that forced a runner at the plate before Robinzon Diaz hit a soft liner to end the frame.

The Sounds' bullpen was outstanding behind Seidel. Jesus Sanchez worked three hitless frames, fanning four, before Kyle Heckathorn (5-2) allowed one hit in his lone frame of work to pick up the win.

The teams play the middle game of the three-game set at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday. Right-hander Hiram Burgos (1-2, 1.99) will make the start for the Sounds and face Round Rock right-hander Josh Lindblom (7-0, 1.99).

Please please please let Rizzo and Williams be the real deal. Hopefully it is fun watching those guys develop.

And Denson continues to draw walks and get on base. I am going to keep a close eye on him. A High Schooler that will take a walk and has massive power is nice to see.

Final: AZL Royals 8, @AZL Brewers 2

AZL Brewers Box Score

It's too bad RHP Austin Ross struggled in his 4th outing coming off Tommy John, because otherwise we'd have had quite a contest here. Ross allowed six runs in an inning and two-thirds, and top 2013 pick RHP Devin Williams had a really nice line behind him, but did allow a two-run line drive double when first entering the contest that allowed two of Ross' baserunners to score.

LHP Clint Terry is one of only two southpaws on the active staff, and the just-turned 21-year-old out of Lee University continued his strong summer, now sporting a 13-to-0 K-to-BB ratio in eight innings.

RHP Alex Lavandero saw some non-pressue late inning action, as staff continues to try and get the 2012 9th rounder on track.

AZL Brewers Game Log

***

First baseman David Denson was on base three more times, lifting his OBP to .455 after his first eight games.

Multi-hit game machine Francisco Castillo (the switch-hitting second baseman has seven multi-hit games in his ten contests so far!) singled twice.

RF Elvis Rubio sits at an eight-game OPS of 1.116 after reaching base two more times here (Elvis turns 19 today, Tuesday).

Nice to see rookie catcher Tanner Norton back in action (first time in a week), even if it was just easing back in at designated hitter.
