Ex-Fresno baseball star Halton drove 'way too fast' after call-up to Brewers

By Anthony Galaviz — The Fresno Bee

Sean Halton was going to the Opry Mills mall with his Nashville Sounds teammates last week when he got a call from Sounds manager Mike Guerrero that changed his life.

'You got about three hours before you fly out,' " Halton recalls Guerrero telling him. "I rushed back and got packed and drove way too fast to the airport.

"The Milwaukee Brewers purchased the contract of the former Fresno High and Fresno City College star from the Sounds on Wednesday.

"It's a dream come true," Halton said. "Just trying to make it last as long as I can. There's no place I'd rather be than playing with and against the best in the world. Nothing like it."

Halton joined the Brewers in Milwaukee and played in his first major-league game against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday. He got his first major-league hit when he singled in the fifth inning off former Washington High and Fresno State standout Matt Garza.

"Matt's always been good to me," Halton said. "He's a stand-up guy and a true pro. He was one of the first guys to congratulate me, one of the things you'll never forget.

"But I was just happy to be on first."

Halton said that first-hit ball is in a case at the team's clubhouse getting ready to be framed, and he'll be able to keep the lineup card, too.

Halton got his first big-league start Saturday against Pittsburgh and went 1 for 4. He hit a single off starter Francisco Liriano in his first at-bat, but grounded out against National League saves leader Jason Grilli in his final at-bat."

Being at the plate versus their closer in the ninth, fans cheering -- pretty cool moment. But ... wish it all could've came in a W."

At Nashville, Halton hit .288 with nine home runs and 35 RBIs in 66 games. He was picked by the Brewers in the 13th round of the 2009 draft out of Lewis-Clark State College in Idaho.

Fresno City College coach Ron Scott and Fresno High co-coach Jason Papi both cited Halton's work ethic as a key to his success.

Scott said Halton works out with his Rams team in the offseason and is a "great role model for young players."

Papi said, "He's one of the hardest-working kids we've ever had in our program and I couldn't think of a more deserving person."

Halton is the first former Fresno High player to get into the big leagues since Bobby Jones did it in 1993 -- and becomes the 13th former Warriors player to make it to Major League Baseball.

Brent Suter named FSL Pitcher of the Week

Brevard southpaw earned complete game win last Friday in Clearwater

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - The Florida State League announced on Monday that Brevard County Manatees left-handed pitcher Brent Suter was named the league's pitcher of the week for the period of June 24-30.

On June 28, Suter earned the win as he threw a complete game as the Manatees defeated the Clearwater Threshers, 2-1 at Bright House Field in Clearwater. In his nine innings of work, he scattered five hits and allowed just one run on a two-out solo homer to Brock Stassi in the second inning.

The southpaw struck out five and issued just one walk, which came in the bottom of the ninth with two outs. That walk put the tying run on base with the potential winning run stepping to the plate, but Suter was able to punch out Kelly Dugan on three pitches to end the game. Suter went the distance on 112 pitches with 78 strikes.

Jimmy Nelson was the last Manatee to throw a nine-inning, complete game on May 18, 2012 against the Fort Myers Miracle, but that came in a losing effort. Before Suter accomplished the feat against the Threshers, Evan Anundsen was the last Brevard County pitcher to win a nine-inning, complete game when he hurled a no-hitter on the road against the Daytona Cubs on April 28, 2009.

Entering play on Monday, Suter is sixth in the Florida State League with a 2.87 ERA. He is also fourth in the league with a 1.09 WHIP and fourth among starting pitchers with a .236 batting average against. The lefty is also tied for first among starting pitchers in the FSL as he has allowed an average of 9.98 baserunners per nine innings.

Despite not making his first start for Brevard County until April 29 as he started the season with Class-A Wisconsin, Suter leads the Manatees with seven wins and 69 innings pitched. Eight of his ten starts with the 'Tees have been quality starts.

Suter was drafted by the Brewers in the 31st round of the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft out of Harvard University.

Andrew Lambo of the Pirates, Anthony Garcia of the Cards, Yasiel Balaguert of the Cubs, and Phil Erin of the Reds were this weeks divisional winners. Yasiel looks like one bitter dude in his profile pic.

Seidel has thrown rather well since his promotion to AAA and re-insertion as a starter. I kind of thought the organization gave up on him, but he's done well sans 1-2 outings.

Final: Brevard County 8, Lakeland 0

Brevard blanks Flying Tigers in rain-shortened game

Second game rescheduled for August 20 in Lakeland

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

Manatees center fielder Mitch Haniger, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run in Brevard County's 8-0 win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

LAKELAND, Fla - It took over 24 hours and it was only six innings, but the Brevard County Manatees completed an 8-0 rain-shortened shutout of the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Monday night at Joker Marchant Stadium.

The second game of the doubleheader that was scheduled to be played on Monday will be made up as part of a doubleheader in Lakeland on Tuesday, August 20 beginning at 5:00 p.m.

The Manatees (7-4 second half, 44-34 overall) started the game on Sunday with a bang as they scored three runs out of the gate in the first inning. Yadiel Rivera doubled to left with one out and then Nick Ramirez followed with a walk. Mitch Haniger would then step in and clear the bases with his third homer of the season.

Ben McMahan led off the second with a single and two batters later Lance Roenicke followed with a one-out single of his own. Brandon Macias then brought both of them home with his 14th double of the season to make it a 5-0 game.

Two batters later, Ramirez plated Macias with a double of his own to make it a 6-0 game. It was at that point where the game was suspended on Sunday night.

Manatees' starting pitcher Cody Scarpetta worked just one inning as he walked two and struck out just one. The strikeout would be the only hitter Scarpetta would actually retire as the other two outs in the inning came when catcher Rafael Neda threw out two Lakeland (3-7, 33-45) baserunners attempting to steal second.

When the game resumed on Monday night, Chad Pierce took over on the mound and he threw five scoreless innings as he yielded four hits and two walks, while striking out six.

In his 18 appearances out of the bullpen this season, Pierce is 4-2 with a 2.40 ERA compared to his three starts, where he is 0-1 with an 8.53 ERA. Since the All-Star break, Pierce has allowed just one earned run in 11.1 innings of relief with 12 strikeouts.

Brevard County tacked two more runs on in the fifth as McMahan and Neda both connected with two-out RBI singles to give the 'Tees an 8-0 lead.

Rivera led the way at the plate as he went 3-for-4, while Macias, Haniger and McMahan added two hits each as the Manatees tallied 13 hits in just six innings.

Following an off-day on Tuesday, the Manatees will return home to Space Coast Stadium on Wednesday night to host the Daytona Cubs (7-3, 42-34) beginning at 6:35 p.m.

Brevard County Box Score

BC Hitters

Brandon Macias: 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI

Yadiel Rivera: 3-4, 2B

Rivera has had multiple hits in 5 of his last 10 games and with 3 hits tonight raised his BA to .258

Nick Ramirez: 1-3, 2B, RBI, BB

Mitch Haniger: 2-3, HR, 3 RBI, SB

Ben McMahan: 2-3, RBI

BC Pitchers

Cody Scarpetta: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, 0 HR

Chad Pierce (W, 4-3): 5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR

Pierce now has 69 strikeouts in 57.2 inning pitched this season. While he had some rough outings earlier in the season as a starter, he has pitched much better out of the bullpen and continued to put up impressive K numbers overall.

Final: Huntsville 9 Chattanooga 5

Somewhat following the script from yesterday, the Stars were no hit through the first 5 innings again tonight before exploding for 9 runs to coast to a 9-5 victory at The Joe. Stars starting pitcher David Goforth turned in a much stronger outing than his previous one. Goforth (1-1, 8.31) was able to work 6 innings tonight. He allowed 4 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks while striking out 7. Goforth was clocked at 98 tonight by the Stars Videographer and was consistently 93-95. David threw 106 pitches, 68 for strikes and recorded a 5-3 ground out to fly out ratio. All 4 runs allowed, were scored with 2 outs.

The Stars also got 3 solid innings from their bullpen. Arcenio Leon pitched 2 innings tonight, allowing an unearned run on 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 1. Casey Medlen worked a perfect 9th, recording 2 strike outs.

Odd little fact. Right now, the Stars are carrying 13 pitchers on their roster. None are left handed. Brian Garman is on the disabled list and Alan Williams is on the restricted list. If my figuring is correct, Williams would be scheduled to return on 7/19.

Huntsville Box Score

Despite being no hit for the first 5 innings, every stars position player, including both pinch hitters, reached base tonight. Shea Vucinich continued to mash the ball, going 2-4 with 4 RBI's, 3 scoring on a 2 out bases loaded double in the 6th. Catcher Adam Weisenburger, who has the most hits by a catcher in the Southern League, added another one with a 2 out 2 run double in the 6th as well. Mike Walker had the only other extra base hit tonight, a double to lead off the 6th, and break up the no hitter. Both Jason Rogers and Rene Tosoni each reached base 3 times, without recording a hit. Rogers walked 3 times and Tosoni walked twice and was hit by a pitch. Chadwin Stang and Kentrail Davis each singled and drew a walk. Nick Shaw had the other hit for Huntsville tonight and Hector Gomez and Shawn Zarraga each drew a walk.

Rattlers rally late to edge Kane County

Wisconsin beats Cougars 4-3

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Manager Matt Erickson congratulates Parker Berberet after his game-tying home run in the seventh inning on Monday night. (Ann Mollica/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers)

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Wisconsin Timber Rattlers catcher Parker Berberet hit a two-run home run with two outs in the seventh inning to tie Monday's game with the Kane County Cougars. Victor Roache drove in the go ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth and the Rattlers held on for a 4-3 win at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

Tyrone Taylor put Wisconsin (32-44 overall, 3-8 second half) in front and extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a double in the first inning.

The Cougars (32-45, 2-9) put their first two hitters on base in the top of the third on a single and an error. It looked like Rattlers starting pitcher Eric Semmelhack would get out of the inning as he retired the next two Kane County hitters to . However, Oliver Zapata tripled to right-center with two outs to drive in both runs to put Kane County in front 2-1.

Albert Almora doubled to start the top of the third inning for Kane County and he moved to third on a ground out to the right side of the infield. Semmelhack got the second out and kept Almora at third base. But, Marco Hernandez drove in Almora with a single through the right side of the infield to push Kane County's lead to 3-1.

Kane County starter Jose Rosario cruised through the middle innings with that two run lead and retired the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh inning. But, Rosario walked Adam Giacalone on four pitches to bring Berberet to the plate. The Rattlers catcher jumped on the first pitch of the at bat and lined a two-run homer over the wall in left center to tie the game 3-3.

Rattlers reliever Martin Viramontes took over for Semmelhack in the top of the eighth inning and pitched a quick 1-2-3 frame to get the Wisconsin bats back in action.

Justin Amlung took over for Rosario in the bottom of the eighth inning and walked Alfredo Rodriguez to start the inning. Orlando Arcia was next and he sent a grounder towards right. Second baseman Gioskar Amaya cut off the ball before it got to the outfield and whirled to throw to second to get the lead runner. But his throw was wild to allow Rodriguez to take third and Arcia to move to second. The Cougars elected to walk Taylor to load the bases and set up a force at the plate.

Roache foiled the plan with a sacrifice fly to left that drove in Rodriguez with the go ahead run.

Viramontes tossed a perfect top of the ninth to nail down the Rattlers victory.

Semmelhack allowed one earned run and struck out four over seven innings. His seven innings matched the longest start of his professional career and was his fifth quality start of the season.

The first three games of this five game series between Wisconsin and Kane County have all been decided by a single run. Wisconsin has won two of the first three games.

Game four of the five game series is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. Tyler Wagner (6-6, 3.48) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County has Tayler Scott (4-2, 4.09) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 12:05pm.

The first 1,000 fans to attend the game will receive a poster of Timber Rattlers All-Star Pitcher Austin Blaski courtesy of Dunkin Donuts. This is poster number seven in a series of ten for the 2013 season.

Show your business card when you purchase a ticket and for $11.50 you will receive a box seat ticket, a beverage and your choice of brat or hot dog. The offer is also available to senior citizens (55 & older) courtesy of Baker Tilly, WVBO, and AM1280 WNAM.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, Time Warner Cable SportsChannel will have the television broadcast. The radio broadcast is available on AM1280, WNAM and timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 11:45am. Tuesday's game is also available to subscribers of MiLB.TV.

HOME RUN:

WIS:

Parker Berberet (3rd, 1 on in 7th inning off Jose Rosario, 2 out)

WP: Martin Viramontes (1-1)

LP: Justin Amlung (3-3)

TIME: 2:11

ATTN: 3,883

Wisconsin Boxscore

Apparently the awesome Martin Viramontes showed up tonight as he pitched 2 1-2-3 innings.

Tyrone Taylor is the best prospect that no one outside of Brewer system prospect watchers is aware of. He still needs to refine his game, but with Stang getting bumped to A+, let's give Tyrone the next challenge. Haniger has quite a bit of positional versatility, but he's not a true CF, at least I didn't get that impression watching him.

The T-Rats only managed 6 hits and no player had a multi-hit game, but it was it enough tonight.

Wisconsin Recap

Going to highlight Viramontes tonight because I find him very intriguing.

Kane County Top of the 8th

  • Pitching Change: Martin Viramontes replaces Eric Semmelhack.
Dan Vogelbach flies out to left fielder Victor Roache.
Jeimer Candelario pops out to first baseman Adam Giacalone.
Marco Hernandez grounds out, shortstop Orlando Arcia to first baseman Adam Giacalone.

Kane County Top of the 9th

  • Willson Contreras grounds out, second baseman Christopher McFarland to first baseman Adam Giacalone.
    Reggie Golden strikes out swinging.
Gioskar Amaya flies out to right fielder Max Walla.

Final: DSL Braves 3, DSL Brewers 2

DSL Brewers Box Score

Another pretty well pitched game for the Brewers without much offense. Victor Diaz turned in a quality start, going six innings and allowing three runs on four hits. He walked just one and struck out seven. The 19-year-old Venezuelan hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his six starts, yet only has a 2-4 record to show for it. Felix Paulino pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Diaz. Paulino has only allowed two runs in 20.1 innings of work this season.

Juan Ortiz had the only multi-hit game for the Brewers, going 2-for-4 with a stolen base. He also got caught stealing. Jorge Quiterio was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Catcher Natanael Mejia had the other Brewers base hit. Raphachel Colatosti, who hadn't played since the 26th, drew a pair of walks.
