NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds dropped their third straight game to the Oklahoma City RedHawks, falling 6-4 in front of 8,889 fans on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium.

Oklahoma City took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Jimmy Paredes grounded into a rare 6-4-6-8 double play with runners on second and third. On the twin-killing, Jonathan Villar, who had opened the game a double, scored the night's first run.

The Sounds answered with a pair of runs in the home half of the opening frame to grab a 2-1 lead against Brad Peacock. Scooter Gennett reached on a throwing error by third baseman Jose Martinez and Josh Prince followed with a bunt single before Caleb Gindl, in his first at-bat after returning to Nashville from Milwaukee, ripped a game-tying RBI single to right. Blake Lalli gave the home team the lead with a sacrifice fly to left that plated Prince.

Following the first-inning scoring for Nashville, Peacock (3-2) calmed down and retired 13 of his next 14 batters faced, including a string of 10 in a row. The right-hander picked up the victory with his quality start, holding the Sounds to two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out nine batters in his seven innings of work.

The RedHawks rallied back into the lead in the fourth when Che-Hsuan Lin laced a two-out, two-run single to right off Chris Narveson.

Oklahoma City added a pair of runs in the sixth against Narveson to extend its lead to 5-2. Marwin Gonzalez led off with a single and scored on a subsequent Paredes single combined with a fielding error by Gindl in right. Brandon Laird followed with an RBI double to right-center to plate Paredes.

Narveson (1-4) took the loss for Nashville after giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits in six innings of work.

The RedHawks made it a 6-2 game in the seventh with a run off Kyle Heckathorn. Martinez led off with a single and later scored on a groundout.

Nashville didn't go down without a fight in the ninth, plating two runs against RedHawks closer Jose Valdez on Hainley Statia's two-out single to center. Catcher Robinzon Diaz, who went 2-for-4 in his Sounds debut, and Stephen Parker (walk) scored on the knock. Left-hander Wade LeBlanc was summoned from the bullpen to face pinch-hitter Hunter Morris, the potential tying run, and retired the slugger on a game-ending groundout.

The teams wrap up the five-game series with a 6:35 p.m. finale on Sunday. Right-hander Johnnie Lowe (0-1, 4.07) will make the start for the Sounds and face Oklahoma City right-hander Philip Humber (0-3, 4.66).

It will be the team's fourth Faith Night of the year, featuring a pregame concert by World Outreach Church and a special bobblehead giveaway of biblical figure David to the first 1,000 fans. Gates open at 5:05 p.m.

Brewers streaking still after stunning Osprey

By Amber Kuehn, Helena Independent Record

Down but not out, the Helena Brewers put together a pair of masterful innings late Saturday night to stun Missoula on the road.

Trailing 4-0, the Brewers scored eight unanswered runs — plating three in the eighth and five more in the ninth — to push their winning streak to six with an 8-4 victory. It was the second game in as many days the Osprey watched a lead vanish, having blown an 8-2 advantage Friday against Great Falls.

Helena manager Tony Diggs was pleased with his team’s never-say-die mentality.

“They played all 27 outs and didn’t roll over, even when they could’ve easily,” he said. “We came off a road trip where we had to travel all night to get here, and we did start off sluggish. But we played hard when it mattered most and we got things done.”

Diggs refused to use the 5 1/2- to 6-hour bus trip following a three-game set in Billings as an excuse for his squad coming out a bit slow. It was the farthest the Brewers have gone this year, however.

“Everybody has to travel,” he said.

Missoula (3-6) appeared to have control of this one when Chuck Taylor’s two-run triple in the sixth inning extended the Osprey lead to 4-0. A double play by Missoula in the top of the seventh kept Helena off the board.

But the shutout bid would be broken up an inning later when some key changes took place. Osprey pitcher Francisco Guzman relieved Robbie Buller, and the Brewers’ Charlie Markson came in to pinch hit for Jose Pena. Markson singled on a ground ball to center field before another pinch hitter — Nathan Orf — reached on a walk.

Guzman then walked Michael Ratterree to load the bases.

Markson came home when Ruben Ozuna grounded into a force out to put the Brewers on the board, and the visitors tacked on another in the next at-bat with Michael Turay’s RBI single.

Following another pitching change, Angel Ortega’s RBI base hit brought the Brewers to within a run.

Then came the real damage. Helena (7-3) led off the ninth with back-to-back singles, then Orf walked to load the bags once again.

The Brewers had struggled with runners in scoring position early, but they made this one count.

Ratterree’s line-drive double scored two more runs to give Helena the lead, Renaldo Jenkins came up with a clutch, two-run single with two outs, and Jenkins eventually came home on a wild pitch and throwing error by catcher Stryker Trahan for the final run of the evening.

Andy Hillis retired the Osprey in order in the ninth to seal the win.

Diggs believes the substitutions the Brewers made in the late innings were critical to the win.

“Markson came in to play and performed well, picked up two big hits,” he said. “Then Orf gave us some real quality at-bats; he came in ready to play. That gave us a little bit of momentum, and then everybody else kicked it up a notch.”

Brewers reliever Chris Razo picked up his Pioneer League-leading third win of the season after allowing just one hit through two innings of work. Eric Meyerchick was charged with the blown save and the loss for Missoula.

Taylor Williams got the start on the mound for Helena, going three innings and giving up two runs — one earned — on three hits. He walked four but struck out five. The other two runs were charged to reliever Barrett Astin, Milwaukee’s third-round draft pick this year.

“The pitching was solid,” Diggs said. “We made a couple mistakes and they took advantage of it.”

Brewers catcher Clint Coulter saw his six-game hitting streak come to an end, but four Brewers finished with multi-hit games: Garrett Cooper was 2 for 4, Markson was 2 for 2 with a pair of runs scored, Turay was 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI and Jenkins finished 2 for 5 with a pair of runs batted in.

With the win, the Brewers remained in first place in the North Division, two games ahead of Great Falls. Missoula sits in last.

Diggs hopes the team’s current streak of success continues.

“Guys just need to stay focused, and understand that every time they walk between the white lines they’re there to perform,” he said.

As for games such as this one?

“It does show me their character,” he said. “They’re in it to play until the last out.”

NOTES: RHP Zach Quintana gets the starting nod tonight ... pitcher Harvey Martin was promoted to Single-A Wisconsin on Saturday after two appearances with Helena. He left with a 2.08 ERA ... Pitcher Tanner Poppe was promoted from Arizona to Helena. He comes in with a 1-0 record and has not allowed a run in six innings. He also has eight strikeouts to zero walks.

Flying Tigers Get Rare 5-4 Victory Over the Manatees

By David Yates, Lakeland Ledger Correspondent

LAKELAND - The Flying Tigers enjoyed a rare victory over the Manatees on Saturday night in 11 innings of FSL baseball at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Tyler Hanover's bases-loaded walk provided Lakeland with a 5-4 win over Brevard County, only the second time the Flying Tigers have defeated their east coast rival this season in 10 tries.

Manatees right-fielder Lance Roenicke had given his team a 4-3 lead with a solo homer in the top of the 11th , but Lakeland rallied for two runs in the home half of the 11th when Jason Krizan and Corey Jones singled, John Murrian was hit by a pitch, and Rashad Brown and Hanover both walked.

The Flying Tigers had taken a 2-0 lead in the first inning when right-fielder Steven Moya rocketed a 3-1 fastball from Brevard starter Damien Magnifico 425 feet to center field for a two-run homer.

Marchant has the deepest outfield in the Florida State League and players rarely hit balls out to center, even during spring training when the big boys are in town.

The Manatees struck right back with three in the second, two coming on the Roenicke homer onto the berm.

"I tried to throw a fastball in on him and left too much of it over the plate," Lakeland starter Jeff Ferrell said.

Those three second-inning runs were the only ones Brevard would get off the 22-year-old North Carolina right-hander. Ferrell faced the minimum 15 batters over the next five innings and finished June with a 2-1 record and 2.37 ERA in six quality starts.

"I feel like I am finally pitching the way I should after having Tommy John surgery two years ago," said Ferrell.

The Flying Tigers (3-6 in the second half; 33-44 overall) play host to the Manatees (6-4; 43-34) again today at Marchant at 1:00 PM (12:00 Central).
