We should probably get used to reading about this young man the way MiLB panders to the large markets.

Last week we saw 3 runners hit by batted balls in 3 days... fast forward today and Gioskar Amaya just got drilled in foul territory between 3rd and home. Had Amaya been in fair territory that would have been 4 straight games at TWC field that a runner would have been out by a batted ball.

As I'm typing this Garza makes a heck of a defensive play on speedy Almora to save a run.

edit. And Mehring just tweeted the exact same thing... sneaky.

Final: Chattanooga 4 Huntsville 0

For the 9th time this season, the Huntsville Stars were shutout. Tonight, the Chattanooga Lookouts and their starting pitcher Zach Lee had the Stars number. Lee and reliever Onelki Garcia limited Huntsville to 3 hits and 3 walks in the whitewashing. For the Stars, starter Drew Gagnon had a major bounce back effort, but still was saddled with the loss. Gagnon, (1-3, 7.54) who didn't make it out of the 1st inning in his last start, worked 7 strong innings tonight in easily his best AA effort. Over those 7 innings, Gagnon allowed 3 runs on 7 hits and 1 walk while striking out 6. He did hit a batter and uncorked a wild pitch as well. Gagnon saw his ERA drop from 9.19 coming in to 7.54 at the end. Gagnon threw 95 pitches, 64 for strikes and had a 9-2 ground out to fly out ratio.

Reliever Casey Medlen worked the 8th and 9th innings for the Stars. He gave up a run on 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out 3. It was the first run Medlen had allowed since June 14th.

Catcher Adam Weisenburger helping out behind the plate, throwing out 2 would be base stealers. The Lookouts did have 2 stolen bases by top prospect Joc Pederson in the 8th which led to an insurance run.

BASERUNNING

SB: Pederson 2 (25, 2nd base off Medlen/Weisenburger, 3rd base off Medlen/Weisenburger).

CS: Martinez, O (2, 2nd base by Gagnon, D/Weisenburger), Ynoa (8, 2nd base by Gagnon, D/Weisenburger).

Huntsville Box Score

On the night, the Stars were limited to 6 base runners. 5 different Stars reaching base with second baseman Nick Shaw leading the way. Shaw, who was in a 1-35 skid, singled twice, including a nice bunt in the 9th. Birthday boy Kentrail Davis singled in the 1st for the Stars only other hit. Chadwin Stang, Jason Rogers, and Hector Gomez each drew a walk tonight. With an 0-3, Rene Tosoni saw his hit streak end at 5 games.

Stars outfielder Brock Kjeldgaard missed the game tonight, and is listed as day-to-day with a lower body injury. He's expected to miss a couple games, but not expected to land on the disabled list at this time.

Huntsville Play By Play

Not a lot to see in there, from a Huntsville perspective.

Game 2 of this 5 game series will be played tomorrow afternoon. Righty Ariel Pena (5-6, 3.00) will be on the mound for Huntsville. Pena, who had his turn in the rotation skipped last time in an effort to limit innings, will be facing the # 5 prospect in the Dodgers organization, Chris Reed (3-7, 3.50). Game time is scheduled for 4:03 Central with Stars Radio Broadcaster Alex Cohen starting things off at 3:50 with the pregame show.

FINAL: Lakeland 5, Brevard County 4

'Tees fall in 11 innings to Flying Tigers

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

Manatees right fielder Lance Roenicke, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Brevard County's 5-4, 11-inning loss to the Lakeland Flying Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium on Saturday night. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

LAKELAND, Fla. - After taking a 4-3 in the top of the eleventh, the Brevard County Manatees fell 5-4 in eleven innings to the Lakeland Flying Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium on Saturday night.

With the game tied 3-3 and heading into the eleventh, Cody Hawn hit his second extra-innings homer in four days as his one-out solo blast gave the Manatees (6-4 second half, 43-34 overall) a one-run lead.

Entering the bottom of the eleventh, 'Tees reliever Santo Manzanillo, who was just transferred to the team from Huntsville earlier in the day, was entering his second inning of work. He started off the frame by allowed back-to-back singles to Lakeland's (3-6, 33-44) Jason Krizan and Corey Jones.

Manzanillo then hit John Murrian with a pitch to load the bases. The Flying Tigers would score the tying run with Brandon Loy at the plate as Manzanillo uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Krizan to score and Jones and Murrian to move up to third and second, respectively.

Loy grounded out to short for the first out of the inning and then Rashad Brown was intentionally walked to set up the force at any base or a possible double play. That opportunity would not come as Manzanillo would issue a walk to Tyler Hanover to bring home the winning run.

Lakeland got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning against Brevard County starting pitcher Damien Magnifico (0-0, 4.66 ERA) when Steven Moya hit a two-out, two-run homer.

Those would be the only earned runs that Magnifico would allow as the Flying Tigers scored a run in the fourth on a Corey Jones sacrifice fly that was unearned thanks to a passed ball earlier in Jones' at-bat that put the runner at third.

Magnifico went six innings and yielded nine hits and did not walk a batter, while striking out five in his second start with the Manatees.

Stephen Peterson relieved Magnifico and threw three scoreless innings of one-hit ball.

Brevard County took a one-run lead with a three-run second inning that started with Cameron Garfield's 14th double of the season. Garfield moved to third on a ground out by Hawn and then scored on a single to left off the bat of Greg Hopkins.

Two batters later with two outs, Lance Roenicke stepped up and hit his fourth home run of the season to left field to make it a 3-2 game.

Roenicke went 2-for-4 out of the number nine spot in the order while T.J. Mittelstaedt set the table in the lead-off spot by going 3-for-5 with a double.

For the Manatees, the loss drops their record to 21-9 in one-run games this season and it is just Brevard County's second loss to Lakeland in ten games thus far this season.

Brevard County and Lakeland will continue their three-game set on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

Stars Shutout by Lee, Lookouts

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

To begin their five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium, the Huntsville Stars were shut out by the Chattanooga Lookouts by a score of 4-0 on Saturday night.

For the Stars, starting pitcher Drew Gagnon took the hard-pressed loss. The 23-year-old righty fell to 1-3 on the year after giving up three runs on seven hits in a season-high seven innings pitched. Gagnon also struck out six batters while only walking one. The loss for Gagnon was his third in as many starts.

Chattanooga put themselves in line for the victory after catcher Jan Vazquez and second baseman Rafael Ynoa hit a pair of RBI singles against Gagnon in the fifth inning. Gagnon also gave up a solo homer to shortstop Ozzie Martinez in the sixth inning.

The Lookouts scored their only other run in the eighth inning against Stars reliever Casey Medlen on an RBI single from third baseman Sean Burroughs.

Those runs were plenty for Lookouts starting pitcher Zach Lee. The former 1st round draft pick for the Dodgers in 2010 gave up just two hits in seven innings of shutout baseball. Lee struck out six batters while walking just one to improve to 6-5 on the year.

Chattanooga conserved the shutout when Onelki Garcia blanked the Stars in two innings of relief to end the game.

On offense, the Stars were held to just three hits, tying a season low. Second baseman Nick Shaw went 2-for-4 with two singles while outfielder Kentrail Davis chipped in with a single.

For the Stars, Saturday night marked the seventh time this year that they have been shutout in a ballgame. In their last two games combined, the Stars have been held to just one run and seven hits.

On Sunday, the Stars and Lookouts play game two of their five-game set at The Joe. Huntsville will send RHP Ariel Pena (5-6, 3.00 ERA) to the bump to try to get the Stars back on the right track. Chattanooga will counter with LHP Chris Reed (3-7, 3.50 ERA). First pitch is at 4:03 PM.

VIDEO from Friday night (Yellow Jerseys!):

The Sounds answered with a pair of runs in the home half of the opening frame to grab a 2-1 lead against Brad Peacock. Scooter Gennett reached on a throwing error by third baseman Jose Martinez and Josh Prince followed with a bunt single before Caleb Gindl, in his first at-bat after returning to Nashville from Milwaukee, ripped a game-tying RBI single to right.

***

In this game, Gindl committed his first AAA error of the season. Coming off his big league LF struggles, he was in RF for this one.

Really need to see video of this play:

Oklahoma City took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Jimmy Paredes grounded into a rare 6-4-6-8 double play with runners on second and third. On the twin-killing, Jonathan Villar, who had opened the game a double, scored the night's first run.

Game log:

Okla. City Top of the 1st

Jonathan Villar doubles (14) on a line drive to center fielder Josh Prince.

Marwin Gonzalez singles on a ground ball to left fielder Khris Davis. Jonathan Villar to 3rd. Marwin Gonzalez to 2nd on the throw.

Jimmy Paredes hit into a fielder's choice double play, shortstop Blake Davis to second baseman Scooter Gennett to shortstop Blake Davis to center fielder Josh Prince. Jonathan Villar scores. Marwin Gonzalez out at 3rd. Jimmy Paredes out at 2nd.

Final: Helena 8, @Missoula 4

Helena box score

Down 4-0 after seven innings? No problem. Helena scored eight runs over the final two frames to shock Missoula. The H-Crew racked up 11 hits, seven walks, and were twice hit by a pitch. The offense was distributed pretty evenly, with each hitter that got a plate appearance reaching at least once, except Taylor Brennan. Angel Ortega, Garrett Cooper, and Michael Ratterree were each on three times, and Charlie Markson and Nathan Orf deserve special notice for each reaching twice despite not entering the game until the 8th inning.

Piggyback tandem Barrett Astin and Taylor Williams, the Brewers' 3rd- and 4th-round picks this year, handled the first six innings (three each), with mixed results. Between them they struck out nine Osprey, but Williams walked four and they each allowed two runs. Nice job by Chris Razo and Andy Hillis to shut down Missoula's offense over the last three innings, facilitating the comeback win.

Wisconsin wins a wild one over Kane County

Rattlers score two in eleventh to beat Cougars 10-9

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/6/4/52245064/cuts/June29Walkoff_ggj8ljsf_wg3wrot1.jpg

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers celebrate their walkoff win over the Kane County Cougars (Ann Mollica/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers)

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and the Kane County Cougars traded comebacks in the late innings on Saturday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. It was the home team that got the last comeback as Wisconsin scored two runs in the bottom of the eleventh inning to defeat the Cougars 10-9.

Kane County (31-44 overall, 1-87 second half) went in front on a home run. Dan Vogelbach hit a 2-0 pitch from Rattlers starting pitcher Preston Gainey to the beach beyond the wall in right-center with two outs in the top of the third. Vogelbach's homer was his twelfth of the season.

Wisconsin (31-43, 2-7) responded in the bottom of the third. Adam Giacalone and Chris McFarland each singled with one out. Michael Reed was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Orlando Arcia got ahead in the count and drilled a double to left-center. All three runners scored and the Rattlers were up 3-1.

Mike Garza singled to start the Wisconsin fifth inning. He went to second on a grounder. A wild pitch sent him to third base. McFarland drove in Garza with a sacrifice fly.

Gainey gave up a single and a double to the first two batters he faced in the top of the seventh. He got the first out of the inning with a popout to second. But, Oliver Zapata singled to drive in both runners to make the score 4-3.

Taylor Wall relieved Gainey and got out of the inning with a pickoff and a strikeout to keep the Rattlers up by a run.

Gainey made the longest start of his professional career with his 6-1/3 innings pitched on Saturday night. He walked one, struck out one and was in line for his third straight win.

Wisconsin added to their lead in the seventh inning without the benefit of a hit. Kane County reliever Dillon Maples walked Max Walla and Tyler Roberts to start the inning. Mike Garza bunted to move both runners up a base. A wild pitch with Giacalone at the plate let Walla score. A passed ball with McFarland at the plate let Roberts score for a 6-3 lead.

The Rattlers took that 6-3 lead to the top of the ninth inning, but could not hold it. Ryan Gibbard, who came on to work a scoreless eighth, hit the first batter of the ninth. The next two batters singled to load the bases. Zapata drew a walk on four pitches to force in a run. Kevin Encarnacion was next and his fly ball to left-center was deep enough to score the runner from third. However, Gioskar Amaya, the runner at second base, tagged to go to third. Tyrone Taylor's throw to third beat Amaya, but the tag appeared to be a bit high and the tying run made it to third base with one out.

Albert Almora knocked a grounder off the leg of Gibbard that turned into a 1-4-3 putout, but Amaya scored on the play to even the score 6-6.

Kane County went in front in the top of the tenth. Jeimer Candelario doubled and a fielder's choice on a sacrifice bunt by Marco Hernandez put runners on the corners with no outs. Carlos Escobar drove in Candelario with a sacrifice fly. Reggie Golden followed with a single. Then, Amaya drove in Hernandez with a single for an 8-6 advantage.

But, Wisconsin stormed back in the bottom of the tenth against Nathan Dorris. McFarland drew a leadoff walk. Reed tripled to right-center to send McFarland across the plate. One out later, Tyrone Taylor tied the game with a single to left. The single pushed Taylor's current hitting streak to thirteen games.

The Cougars took their turn in the top of the eleventh. Gibbard walked Encarnacion to start the inning. Almora sacrificed the go ahead run into scoring position with a bunt. Wisconsin went to the bullpen for lefty Mike Strong to face the left-handed hitting Vogelbach. A 2-2 pitch from Strong was lined to center by Vogelbach for an RBI single and a 9-8 lead for the Cougars. Strong struck out the next two batters to get the Wisconsin hitters back to the plate.

Garza started the rally with a one out single. Giacalone followed with another single to put runners at first and second. Wisconsin sent pinch-runners in for both runners on base. Adrian Williams went to second to replace Garza and Alfredo Rodriguez went to first to take over for Giacalone.

McFarland cracked the first pitch from Dorris inside the line at first base for a double that scored Williams with the tying run and sent Rodriguez to third with the winning run.

Reed was walked intentionally to load the bases and set the stage for a finish that was appropriate for the game.

Arcia stepped to the plate with the infield drawn in to cut down the run at the plate. He smacked a 2-2 pitch Amaya at second base. Amaya went home for the force on Rodriguez. Escobar caught the ball at the plate and tried for the double play with a throw to first. But, the throw was wild and went down the first base line. McFarland raced home with the winning run to end the game.

Game two of the series is Sunday afternoon. Leonard Lorenzo (1-4, 6.04) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County sends Brian Smith (2-3, 2.70) to the mound. Game time is 1:05pm.

Sunday is Celebrate Faith Day at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. There will be a non-denominational service with player testimonials and music at 10:30am. After the game, contemporary Christian recording artist Danen Kane will perform on the new club level.

It's also a Brewers Sunday presented by 107.5, The Fan. Timber Rattlers players and coaches will be wearing Brewers-themed jerseys during the game.

Fans may play catch on the field before the game for thirty minutes starting at noon. Timber Rattlers players will be available for an autograph session on the third base concourse after the game.

JUST BEAT THE CUBS!

I admit that I was shocked when Ryan Gibbard was selected as an all-star ahead of Austin Blaski and Tyler Wagner. I've watched him pitch quite a few times and I've not been all that impressed. I admit to being a tough grader prospect wise but after giving up 3 in the 9th I was confused when he came out for the 10th, and then I was even more confused when he came out for the 11th. Maybe I just wanted a win against the Cubs' affiliate too badly.

Preston Gainey had his best effort as a professional and pitched well but he wasn't dominant, Cubs' 1B prospect Dan Vogelbach reminds me of a white Prince Fielder. About this time last year I was 6' 240lbs, Vogelbach is listed at 6' 250lbs... and I say there's no way... more like 270. Regardless, he moves better than you would think for such a body type, and he absolutely crushed Gainey's pitch into the beach over the wall in right center.

Mike Strong has earned a promotion, he's got nothing to prove in A ball, even though he let his inherited runner score. He tried to get up and out of the zone against Vogelbach but left it about letter high and Vogelbach crushed the pitch for the double.

Victor Roache popped up 3 times that I remember, and I want to say he did for his 4th out as well, but I'm not going back to check the log.

Somehow WI scored 10 runs on just 9 hits, and they actually left runs out on the bases. Michael Garza, Adam Giacalone, and Chris McFarland accounted for 6 of those hits, each getting 2 a piece.
