Link Report for Fri. 6/28 - Strong starting pitcher efforts throughout only translate to a 3-6 night

Final: Helena 3, @Billings 0

Helena box score

Very quiet game. Helena scored three runs in the 2nd inning, and that was that. Eduard Reyes, Brandon Moore, and Sean Albury combined to shut out Billings, allowing just five hits and a walk; Reyes in particular was outstanding, going five innings with a 5/0 K/BB.

The Brewers themselves had only six hits. The 1-2 hitters, Angel Ortega and Clint Coulter, each had a hit and a walk, with Coulter's hit being a double. Omar Garcia also had a hit and is 5-12 since being dropped to the bottom of the order.

Starting for Billings was former million-dollar bonus baby LHP/forward Amir Garrett, making his second appearance this year.

Nice to see Jorge Lopez with another good start. That makes 4 out of his last 5, with the only hiccup coming in his previous start against Cedar Rapids.

12 of his 18 outs tonight came via K or the groundball, and only one batted ball in the game log was recorded as a line drive. I think you could make an argument that this is the best start so far of his pro career.

Meanwhile, Tyler Pike (SEA, 2012 3d rd.) was outstanding against the T-Rats, with likely his best start of the season. He's looking like another very nice young arm in the Mariners' system.

Final: Birmingham 2 Huntsville 1

Huntsville got an excellent outing from starter Andy Moye but it wasn't enough as the Birmingham Barons defeated the Stars 2-1 Friday Night. Moye (3-9, 4.59) pitched his 2nd complete game on the season. He went 8 innings, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits. Moye didn't walk a batter and struck out 6. One of the hits allowed was a solo home run to Barons's third baseman Cody Puckett in the 3rd. Moye threw 104 pitches, 75 for strikes. His ground out to fly out ratio was 8-6. Considering all the innings the bullpen has needed to eat up recently, Moye's outing tonight was just what they needed. Unfortunately, the offense couldn't scrape up a couple more runs to make him a winner.

Huntsville Box Score

Offensively, the Stars were held to 1 run on 4 singles and 3 walks by Barons pitching. Kentrail Davis was the offensive star tonight, going 1-2 with 2 walks, a stolen base, and scored the only run. As a team, the Stars have 36 stolen bases, Davis has 17 of them. First baseman Mike Walker drove in the only run, his 22nd RBI on the season. Rene Tosoni and Brock Kjeldgaard had the other hits for Huntsville and Jason Rogers drew the other walk. Tosoni now has a 5 game hitting streak.

Brock Kjeldgaard left the game in the 5th with what was described as a "lower body injury". He did foul a pitch off his leg/foot earlier in the game and did break a bone there last year in the Arizona Fall League. Hopefully it turns out to be nothing serious.

Pitching Change: Kevin Vance replaces Michael Nix.

Robinzon Diaz lines out to center fielder Trayce Thompson.

Huntsville (2-8 second half, 31-47 overall) heads home to start a 5 game home stand against the Chattanooga Lookouts. Game 1 will be played tomorrow evening. First pitch will be 6:43 Central. Right hander Drew Gagnon will be on the mound for the Stars. Don't forget to join Stars radio broadcaster Alex Cohen at 6:28 for the pregame show.

Also Kentrail Davis left the Stars game in the fifth inning. Possibly a promotion to AAA for him? Or perhaps an injury which prompted the call for Stang? Hopefully it's the former and not the latter.

Actually, it was Brock Kjeldgaard that left the game with a lower body injury. Kentrail Davis is very deserving of a promotion to AAA. Hopefully with Stang moving up, Davis will be bumped up as well.

I don't know what the back-fill moves will be but they have 13 OF's between Helena and Maryvale right now. Noticed Rubio was removed from the Maryvale game early as well. Possibly Taylor gets bumped to A+ and Rubio up to A.

Hunter Morris has quietly gotten back on track at the plate. .250/.400/.464/.864 line in his last 10 games, & he's pulled his season OPS back up over .800.

He's on pace to shatter his previous career high (from last season) in BBs, and is showing every bit as much raw power this season as last. The only thing missing from his offensive game so far this season is the singles. Imo he's showing every sign of improvement you want to see from a young power hitter. Is he going to be an impact bat in the bigs? Maybe not, but I think he's going to be more than fine at 1B as a stop-gap in his worst-case scenario. I'm thinking a Lyle Overbay-type bat, but with less contact/OBP ability & more HR power.

Clinton holds on to top Rattlers

Wisconsin's ninth inning rally falters

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CLINTON, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers attempted to make it back-to-back ninth inning comebacks against the Clinton LumberKings. But unlike Thursday night, the LumberKings held off the Rattlers in their last at bat to defeat Wisconsin 3-1 at Ashford University Field on Friday night.

The top of the Wisconsin batting order put them in front in the fourth inning. Michael Reed doubled to start the rally. Orlando Arcia bunted to move Reed to third. Tyrone Taylor continued his hot hitting with a single to left to drive in Reed. Taylor pushed his hitting streak to twelve straight games with that hit.

Clinton (39-38 overall, 6-2 second half) rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. There were two outs and none on base. Wisconsin starter Jorge Lopez hit Janelfry Zorilla. Taylor Ard followed with a single to put runners on first and second. Tyler Marlette was next and he singled to left to drive in Zorilla to tie the game.

Those were the only runs the starting pitchers would give up on the evening. Lopez tossed six innings, struck out six, and allowed four hits. Clinton starter Tyler Pike struck out six, walked one, and allowed two hits over seven innings.

The LumberKings took the lead in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Taylor Mangum. Gabby Guerrero started the inning with a single. Tim Lopes singled on a hit-and-run to send Guerrero around to third. Martin Peguero drove in Guerrero with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Clinton added to their lead in the bottom of the eighth. Dario Pizzano doubled to start the inning and moved to third on a ground out. The Rattlers brought the infield in, but a slow chopper up the middle off the bat of Ard left only a play to first. The ground out by Ard drove in Pizzano for a 3-1 lead.

On Thursday, the Timber Rattlers trailed 2-1 heading to the top of the ninth and scored three runs to take a 4-2 lead on the way to an eventual 5-4 win in eleven innings.

Wisconsin (30-43, 1-7) tried to repeat the feat in the ninth on Friday. Taylor singled to start the frame, but was erased on a fielder's choice when Victor Roache sent a grounder to third and the LumberKings could only get the force out at second. Then, Mike Garza's sinking line drive got in for a hit and bounced away off the leg of Zorilla. That put the tying runs at second and third with one out. But, Clinton escaped as Mark Bordanaro got a strikeout and a ground out to preserve the win for the LumberKings.

The Timber Rattlers return home to begin a five game series with the Kane County Cougars. Game one is Saturday night with Preston Gainey (3-5, 6.85) scheduled to get the starting assignment for the Timber Rattlers. Felix Pena (2-2, 3.04) is set to start for the Midwest League affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. Game time at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium is 6:35pm.

Get your gate Saturday night as Cher-Make presents Ultimate Tailgate Night with plenty of tips and fun surrounding one of the area's most popular pastimes. Plus, the first 1,000 fans to attend this game will receive a cooler bag from Cher-Make.

It's also a Fly Away Saturday, which means one lucky fan will win airfare for two from Funjet Vacations and Fox World Travel at this game. Stick around after the game for a FOX 11 fireworks display!

If you can't make it out to the game, there are several ways to catch the action. My NEW32's Sports Showdown will televise the game beginning with their pregame show at 6:00pm. The radio broadcast is available on AM1280, WNAM and timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm. The game will also be available to subscribers of MiLB.TV.

WP: Tyler Pike (5-3)

LP: Taylor Mangum (1-4)

SAVE: Mark Bordonaro (2)

TIME: 2:09

Wisconsin Boxscore

My goodness Jorge Lopez can spin some gems when his mechanics are on... 6IP, 4H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, and 6SO? I'll take that every friggen time out. I went up to my parents place to watch the Hellweg vs Cole match-up with my pops(what a bummer BTW) so I didn't get to listen to the game. I did sneak away to check in over iHeartRadio which just happened to be in the 6th and Chris said that Jorge was bringing big velocity in every inning but the 4th when he gave up the run. He referred to a pitch as "only 91", then laughed a little bit at himself at which point my phone started buffering again and I lost the game.

At some point national media folks are going to start getting as excited about Tyrone Taylor as we are, another 2-4 effort as the DH. I understand that he's not going to make the hot sheet without insane HR numbers for a week but he should at least make a BA daily prospect recap or MiLB feature don't you think? Oh yea, he only had the only multi hit game for the T-Rats tonight.

I'd rather see Pena as I just noticed Ozuna only has 4 ABs thus far.

Huh. Just saw a Wahl grooming/clippers ad on SpikeTV (during The Departed) featuring the Clinton Lumber Kings players & ballpark. Can't say I ever would've guessed that was coming.

is a link to another version of the commercial, along with two other Wahl/Lumber Kings spots in the right sidebar menu. None of them are the exact spot I just saw air, but interesting nonetheless.

Defensive switch from catcher to left field for Robinzon Diaz.

I especially like the third line where Kentrail Davis replaces Kentrail Davis haha. Thanks for the clarification.

Pena to Wisconsin and Taylor to BC would be sweet but that's probably wishful thinking.

Sounds Swept In Double Dip

Nashville's Kroenke Tossed Complete Game in Loss

Nashville Sounds

Blake Davis (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A three-run fourth inning doomed the Nashville Sounds Friday night, losing 6-3 Friday night at Greer Stadium in the nightcap of their doubleheader with the Oklahoma City RedHawks.

Tied 2-2 in the fourth inning, Oklahoma City worked three singles and a two-run double off of Sounds starter Zach Kroenke (4-10) to take a three run lead. Ruben Sosa hit the third single to give the RedHawks a 3-2 lead and Jonathan Villar, two-for-four, followed with the double.

Kroenke finished with a career-high nine strikeouts in a seven-inning complete game effort. The lefty surrendered six runs, five earned, in the loss, in which he allowed eight hits.

The RedHawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning with a solo home run from lead-off batter Jonathan Villar, but the Sounds quickly answered with two runs in the home half of the inning.

With two outs, Blake Lalli singled to left field and was driven in by Hunter Morris' triple off the right-field wall. Khris Davis followed with an RBI-double to give the Sounds their only lead.

RedHawks centerfielder George Springer, who was promoted from Double-A on Thursday, where he had 19 home runs, tied the game with his first Triple-A home run.

The Sounds picked up their final run of the game in the sixth inning. Designated hitter Blake Lalli, two-for-three, hit a single off the first baseman to move Josh Prince to third base and infielder Hainley Statia drove in Prince with a groundout.

RedHawks' Jake Buchanan (1-0) made his first Triple-A start a good one, getting the win for his five innings of work for Oklahoma City. The right-handed pitcher held Nashville to two runs on four hits, fanning two and walking none, and retired 13 of his last 14 batters faced. RedHawks reliever Josh Zeid picked up his seventh save in a scoreless seventh.

The loss, coupled with their 5-1 game one defeat, makes the Sounds 0-3-1 in double headers this season.

The Sounds will play game four of their five-game series against the Oklahoma City RedHawks Saturday night at Greer Stadium. Throwing for Nashville will be LHP Chris Narveson (1-3, 7.04) against RHP Brad Peacock (2-2, 3.38). The first 1,000 kids through the gates will receive a youth jersey courtesy of McDonald's. The game will be followed by a Fireworks Extravaganza powered by Nashville's News 2.

Stars fall despite Moye’s complete game

Matthew Raines/ Huntsville Stars

Birminghman, AL. – Looking to salvage their final game of the year in their rival’s home park, the Huntsville Stars did battle with the Birmingham Barons on Friday. In spite of pitcher Andy Moye’s excellent effort, the Stars came up short by a score of 2-1. The Barons managed to escape with the win through timely hitting and base running as well as a dominating performance by their pitching staff throughout much of the game.

The Barons struck first in the bottom of the third when Cody Puckett homered to center, putting Birmingham up 1-0 through three innings. The Barons added to their lead in the sixth when Trayce Thompson hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Keenyn Walker who was on third by merit of a triple in the previous at-bat. This made the score 2-0 going into the seventh inning.

The Stars got the bats going in the top half of the seventh when Mike Walker singled to right, bringing home Kentrail Davis, cutting the deficit in half going into the seventh inning stretch.

Unfortunately for Huntsville, Barons relief pitcher Kevin Vance did not allow the Stars to score again, picking up his third save of the season and sending Huntsville to another heart breaking defeat. The Stars fall to 5-7 in one run games this season.

Moye (3-9) took the loss, tossing a complete game, giving up seven hits and two runs. He struck out six while walking none. In four games against Birmingham this season, Moye has thrown twenty one innings, giving up four runs on sixteen hits and striking out sixteen while walking two.

Michael Nix (1-1) got the win for the Barons, going six and two thirds innings, giving up four hits and one run. He struck out six and walked one. Vance pitched the final two and a third innings, giving up no hits and striking out three.

Huntsville was led at the plate by Davis, who went one for two with two walks and a stolen base that lead to the only Stars run. Walker went one for four in the game with the lone RBI.

Puckett led Birmingham at the plate, going two for three including the home run. Jared Mitchell also collected two hits, both of them being doubles. The Barons had six extra base hits on the night.

With the loss, the Stars fall to 31-47 on the year, 2-8 in the second half. The Barons improve to 50-30, 6-4 in the second half. The teams will resume their rivalry for the final time this year when Huntsville welcomes Birmingham to Joe Davis Stadium on July 10th-14th.

The Stars will next head home to start a five game series with the Chattanooga Lookouts on Saturday. First pitch is set for 6:43 CT.

Helena pitchers shut down Mustangs, 3-0

By Mike Scherting, Billings Gazette

If not for a four-batter stretch in the second inning, the Billings Mustangs and Helena Brewers might still be playing.

Pitching ruled the night Friday in front of 3,924 fans at Dehler Park. All it took, though, to send the Mustangs to their third straight defeat was a momentary lapse from starter Amir Garrett that the Brewers used to run up a 3-0 victory.

“Terrific pitching,” Mustangs manager Pat Kelly said. “Both sides.”

The teams totaled just 11 hits in a game that lasted just 2 hours, 21 minutes. Helena’s Eduard Reyes (1-0), Brandon Moore and Sean Albury combined to give up just five hits, while Garrett (1-1), Layne Somsen and Robert Lewis-Walker gave up six for the Mustangs.

It was a two-out rally in the second inning — when Helena got four straight hits — that paved the way for the Brewers’ fifth straight win. Nathan Orf had an RBI single and Omar Garcia drove in two with a double. Michael Ratterree got things going with a double after Garrett was forced to field two hard-hit comebackers to get the first two outs.

“I don’t think that threw me off,” said Garrett, who was actually faced with a third comebacker in four batters when he couldn’t corral Jalen Harris’ single back up the box for the second hit of the inning. “I left a couple pitches up, I didn’t place them right. They were able to get a few hits in and put them in play. But besides that, I pitched pretty good. I bounced back from that one inning and threw three more shutout innings.”

Unfortunately for Garrett and the Mustangs, the tandem of Reyes, Moore and Albury was even better.

Reyes retired 12 straight at one point after giving up back-to-back one-out singles in the first, and Moore allowed just two base runners in three innings. Albury hit Gabriel Rosa and walked Phillip Ervin to start the bottom of the ninth, but the next three batters went down quietly as the Brewers moved a game-and-a-half ahead of second-place Billings in the North Division.

“We just didn’t get much off Reyes and Moore,” Kelly said. “They really pounded the zone with their fastball and did a nice job. The first at-bat a lot of times with young hitters determines their whole night. Then they put a little more pressure on themselves. That’s part of the development process; put those at-bats away and go up with a clean slate.”

Game rewind

Like the Mustangs, the Brewers didn’t mount many threats. Following their three-run outburst in the second, Helena had multiple base runners just two more times. The best of those opportunities came in the seventh when 2012 first-round pick Clint Coulter doubled and Garrett Cooper followed with a walk off Somsen. But Jose Pena struck out and Taylor Brennan lined out to end the inning, and Lewis-Walker threw a 1-2-3 ninth.

First-round pick Phillip Ervin had another two-hit night and was the only player in the game to have more than one hit. He singled in the first inning and tripled in the sixth, raising his average to .414. In the ninth, Ervin battled back from an 0-2 count to work a walk to give the Mustangs runners on first and second with none out.

But Jonathan Reynoso fouled to the catcher on the first pitch he saw after Phillips’ walk, and Carlos Sanchez also fouled out, this time past third base, on the first pitch. Avain Rachal then lined to right to end the game.

“I thought Reynoso got a good pitch to hit, he just popped it up,” Kelly said. “I thought Sanchez chased a ball up out of the zone. He’s usually more disciplined than that. You’ve got the pitcher in the hole, he’s the one in trouble, not you. Again, I think young hitters have to realize that.”

Final: @AZL Padres 3, AZL Brewers 1

AZL Brewers Box Score

As noted earlier, 22nd round switch-hitting 5'9" OF Johnny Davis joined the squad. Davis is 23, but was only a freshman coming out of West Los Angeles Community College, so he probably has an intersting backstory about his days immediately out of high school (brief video of him hitting off a tee

). Davis singled in the 9th in second pro at-bat, congrats.

Davis had one of the three A-Crew hits, all singles, but two came in the 9th as part of an ill-fated rally attempt.

AZL Brewers Top of the 9th

Defensive Substitution: Miguel Jimenez replaces first baseman Tommy Medica, batting 3rd, playing first base.

Johnny Davis singles on a ground ball to third baseman Dustin Peterson.

Eric Williams strikes out swinging.

Joe Andrade singles on a fly ball to left fielder Mason Smith. Johnny Davis advances to 3rd, on a fielding error by left fielder Mason Smith.

Brandon Diaz called out on strikes.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Paul Eshleman replaces Luis Aviles.

Paul Eshleman strikes out swinging.

Crazy solid pitching throughout the system tonight only netted a 3-6 record in the minor league chain, too bad.

Brewer batters drew five walks, including two by Tucker Neuhaus, but fanned 16 times.

RHP Austin Ross' third rehab start post-Tommy John was his best to date, although still limited to two innings. Perhaps we'll see him bumped to either the Timber Rattlers or Manatees staff soon.

AZL Brewers Game Log

Big knock did the Brewers in fairly early --

AZL Padres Bottom of the 3rd

Pitching Change: Joel Dicent replaces Austin Ross.

Jake Bauers strikes out swinging.

Jose Ruiz hit by pitch.

Josh VanMeter grounds into a force out, shortstop Luis Aviles to second baseman Francisco Castillo. Jose Ruiz out at 2nd. Josh VanMeter to 1st.

Franchy Cordero homers (1) on a fly ball to left field. Josh VanMeter scores.

Dustin Peterson grounds out, second baseman Francisco Castillo to pitcher Joel Dicent.

Althogh Dicent did a decent job of extrication here --

AZL Padres Bottom of the 4th

Tommy Medica grounds out, second baseman Francisco Castillo to first baseman David Denson.

Malquiel Brito singles on a line drive to right fielder Eric Williams.

Jose Urena walks. Malquiel Brito to 2nd.

Mason Smith walks. Malquiel Brito to 3rd. Jose Urena to 2nd.

Jake Bauers strikes out swinging.
