Quite a few divisional mentions, unfortunately our own Drew Gagnon is mentioned in the one section no one wants to be in. Just a reminder that for hitters the Hot Sheet is as much about HRs as it is about being "hot", just like pitchers need Ks to make the list so Tyrone Taylor doesn't have much of a chance.

Prospect Hot Sheet: Kyle Crick Jumps From DL To No. 1

6. Alberto Cabera, rhp, Cubs

Team: Double-A Tennessee (Southern)

Age: 24.

Why He’s Here: 8 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER. 3 BB, 13 Ks.

The Scoop: If the Cubs were less desperate for starting pitching and playing more for today, Cabrera might be pitching in their big league bullpen now. That’s the role he filled throughout 2012, when he was pegged as a reliever and made his major league debut in August. But the front office moved him back to the rotation and returned him to Double-A this year and it has paid off, as Cabrera has posted a career-best strikeout rate as a starter as well as a reduced walk rate.

IN THE TEAM PHOTO

Paul Blackburn, rhp, Cubs: When the Cubs drafted Blackburn in the supplemental first round last year, they knew he had better feel than the average high school arm. That has been apparent in his first three starts at short-season Boise. The 19-year-old has walked two while striking out 20 and has yet to allow an earned run. He was 0-1, 0.00 this week with 12 strikeouts in 10 innings.

Phillip Ervin, cf, Reds: The 27th overall pick in the draft made an immediate impact after joining Rookie-level Billings late last week. The Samford product homered in his third pro game and hit .391 (9-for-23) with two homers and six RBIs on the week.

Tyler Glasnow, rhp, Pirates: The Pirates loved Glasnow’s projectability coming out of high school in 2011, and he’s making their $600,000 investment look good thus far. The 19-year-old has a 2.44 ERA in 15 low Class A starts, and he leads the SAL in strikeouts (98) and opponent average (.149). In two starts this week, he struck out 13 over nine scoreless innings and gave up just six hits.

NOT HOT

Drew Gagnon, rhp, Brewers: Gagnon got a promotion to Double-A Huntsville after a cascade of pitching promotions higher up in the system created a need. Considering he was 3-4, 5.16 at high Class A Brevard County, it shouldn’t be a surprise that he has found the Southern League even tougher. Gagnon, 23, didn’t get out of the first inning in his lone start this week, giving up six hits and four runs, and is allowing more than a run an inning in his four Double-A starts.

Ismael Guillon, lhp, Reds: For much of his career, Bret Saberhagen was an ace in odd-numbered years and league average in even-numbered years. Guillon has flipped Saberhagen’s script. He burst onto the scene with an excellent 2010 season, only to watch it fall apart in 2011. He recovered in 2012, but his 2013 season has been even worse than 2011. He retired just two of the nine batters he faced this week, walking three and giving up four hits in 2/3 of an inning.

Prospect Hot Sheet -- well, I asked in chat how Tyrone Taylor could be snubbed four weeks in a row as a 19-year-old with a .447/.515/.671 line for the month.

I swear, this kid is going to add muscle & power as he grows -- to go along with a stellar-looking hit tool... and he'll be on those top-100 lists soon enough.

CNN - Vegas 115˚, Phoenix 118˚ -- it gets worse

Has a serious article been written in past years about the dangers these kids face in the Arizona League, the home plate umpires, etc.? Should they be playing at 8:00 AM or 10:00 PM local time instead? And what impact does it have on accurate player evaluation?

Drew Gagnon's on the "not hot" list.

Sorry about doubling up MH, I had my post started and then got side tracked by work stuff. I started it before yours but didn't finish it until much after, and never saw your original.

Prospect Hot Sheet Chat with Jim Shonerd

John Blevins (Erie, PA): What are the long-term projections for Glasnow? ETA to Majors?

Jim Shonerd: I'm very intrigued by Glasnow. Stands 6-foot-7 and shows signs of two plus pitches. 2016 is probably a realistic ETA, with mid-2015 the best case scenario.

Ronnie Thompson (Pulaski, KY): What needs to happen before Kolten Wong can ascend to the Majors? He has little to prove other than improving his BB rate.

Jim Shonerd: Like I talked about with Grant Green, there's just not a pressing need for him right now. Wong has pretty well proven he can hit Triple-A pitching.

Jeff (California): Is Arismendy Alcantara the Cubs Second Baseman after the All-Star game next year? And is he a viable lead-off option in the future?

Jim Shonerd: At the earliest, and he hasn't exactly mastered Double-A yet. He didn't look like a leadoff guy coming into the year, but he's showing a lot more patience (his 32 walks are already a career high), so you could see him in a leadoff role, though he's been hitting second or third with Tennessee.

Jeff (California): Is Alberto Cabrera more of a back-end guy or might he be a mid-rotation candidate?

Jim Shonerd: He can be more than a No. 4 or 5 guy. It's a power arm and he's shown effective secondary stuff enough to believe he can be a quality big league starter.

cocoa (new zealand): thanks Jim, Dan Vogelbach looks like one of the sweetest pure hitters I've seen in a long time. do you think his bat can carry him to the majors, and do you see him being a great hitter in the majors, maybe a .300+ avg hitter, maybe another prince fielder? Thanks

Jim Shonerd: .300 might be a stretch, but he'll be more than a one-dimensional power hitter. He doesn't just swing for the downs and will use the whole field, so he should be able to hit for solid averages, not to mention his patience that leads to walks.

Jen (Hawaii): After Buxton and Taveras, who is the next best hitting prospect?

Jim Shonerd: Correa, Sano and Bogaerts are the leading candidates there. We'll be posting our annual Midseason Top 50 next week.

Final: DSL Brewers 4, DSL Blue Jays 3 (Game One)

DSL Brewers Box Score

The Brewers took game one of their doubleheader 4-3, racking up 11 hits, five of which went for extra bases. They played nine innings in this one instead of the traditional seven for a doubleheader. Catcher Natanael Mejia went 2-for-3 with a double after pinch-hitting for Kevin Martinez in the fourth inning. Juan Ortiz went 2-for-4 with a double. Center fielder Yunior Santana and DH Juan De Leon each went 2-for-4. Gregory Munoz had a triple and 2 RBI in four at bats. Jorge Quiterio and Daniel Leonardo each doubled, while Leonardo drew a walk and stole a base as well.

Munoz and Quiterio each committed an error as the Brewers were apparently experimenting with players at different positions on the infield in this one. Ortiz who has played mainly outfield was at first. Leonardo who usually plays shortstop was at second base for the first time in his brief pro career. Munoz was at shortstop and Quiterio who had played mostly at second base, was at third.

Joan De La Cruz started and gave up one run in three innings. He gave up just one hit but did walk three batters. Angel Ventura relieved him and pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits, while striking out five. He picked up his second win of the season, improving to 2-1. Doni Arias got the final out of the game to record his first save.

Final: DSL Blue Jays 5, DSL Brewers 3 (Game Two)

DSL Brewers Box Score (Not available online yet)

This one went eight innings. I'm guessing it was scheduled for seven but then with the score tied they went to the eighth. The Brewers hurt themselves when their defense fell apart in the top of the eighth, committing two errors and a passed ball that allowed the Blue Jays to score a pair of runs. They also managed just three hits in game two. Yunior Santana had two of the three with a single and his second home run of the year. Santana also drew a walk and scored two runs. Jorge Quiterio, who was the designated hitter in this one, had the other Brewers hit. Juan De Los Santos, Juan De Leon and Raphachel Colatosti each drew a walk.

The Brewers went 0-for-3 in stolen base attempts with Santana, Quiterio and Yeraldy Martinez each getting cut down trying to steal. They have now stolen 21 bases and have been caught stealing 23 times. That's not so good.

Junior Flores started game two, allowing three runs in four innings of work. He gave up five hits and walked two, while striking out four. Orlando Torres pitched the final four innings in relief and took the loss, giving up two unearned runs in the eighth. He gave up four hits in all, walking one and striking out two.

DSL Brewers Play-By-Play (Not available online yet)

Yunior Santana tied the game up at 3-3 with a home run to lead off the seventh. They could have had second and third with one out, but ran themselves out of a bigger inning

Nashville Game 1

Sounds Lose Twinbill Opener In Extras, 5-1

Oklahoma City Plates Four In Ninth To Take Win

Jimmy Nelson (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Oklahoma City RedHawks edged the Nashville Sounds, 5-1 , in nine innings in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday evening at Greer Stadium.

With the loss, Nashville (28-53) fell to 1-4 in extra-inning play this season.

Jimmy Nelson turned in another strong outing for Nashville but took a no-decision for his work after allowing one run on five hits over 5 1/3 innings of work.

Hainley Statia extended his hitting streak to six games with a leadoff double off Brett Oberholtzer in the third and scored the contest's first run on Blake Davis' one-out, opposite-field two-bagger down the left field line.

Oklahoma City tied the contest at 1-1 in the top of the sixth when Jonathan Villar led off with a single, moved to second on a Nelson balk, and later scored on George Springer's RBI double off the left field wall off Sounds closer Rob Wooten, who suffered just his third blown save in 19 chances.

The Sounds missed a chance to end the contest in regulation after Hunter Morris ripped a one-out double down the right field line in the seventh to chase Oberholtzer and put a man in scoring position. However, Khris Davis followed with a lineout to center and Morris was doubled off second to end the threat and send the game to extra frames.

In the second extra frame, the RedHawks sent 10 men to the dish and plated four runs against Travis Webb to take their first lead of the night.

Oklahoma City put runners on the corners with one out against Webb (1-3) when Springer drew a walk and moved to third on a Brandon Laird single before the left-hander walked Marwin Gonzalez to load the bags. Carlos Perez followed with a go-ahead RBI single to left that was booted by Davis to allow a second run to score on the play.

The scoring continued as Jose Martinez laid down a perfectly-executed suicide squeeze bunt to plate Gonzalez then Perez scored one batter later when Morris was unable to field Robbie Grossman's two-out grounder.

Wade LeBlanc retired the Sounds in order in the bottom of the ninth to close out the Oklahoma City win.

FINAL: Brevard County 2, Clearwater 1

Suter goes the distance to top Threshers

Brevard earns 21st one-run win of 2013 with 2-1 victory

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/2/4/47191424/cuts/Suter_5.10_ivnttkih_6plht8el.JPG

Manatees starting pitcher Brent Suter, seen here in a game from earlier this season, earned the first nine-inning, complete game win for Brevard County in over four years as he allowed just one run on five hits, while walking just one and striking out five in a 2-1 win over the Clearwater Threshers on Friday night at Bright House Field in Clearwater. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Brent Suter became the first Brevard County Manatees pitcher to record a nine-inning, complete game win in over four years as the 'Tees edged the Clearwater Threshers, 2-1 on Friday night at Bright House Field.

Suter (7-4, 2.87) scattered five hits and allowed just one run on a two-out solo homer to Brock Stassi in the second inning. The southpaw tallied five strikeouts and walked just one batter, with the free pass coming with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. The 2012 31st round pick out of Harvard University went the distance on 112 pitches with 78 strikes.

The walk that Suter issued in the ninth to Carlos Alonso made things interesting as it put the tying run on base with the winning run coming to the plate in the form of Kelly Dugan. Suter though was able to punch out Dugan on three pitches to end the threat, the game and wrap up the complete game.

Jimmy Nelson was the last Manatee to throw a nine-inning, complete game on May 18, 2012 against the Fort Myers Miracle, but that came in a losing effort. Before Friday night, Evan Anundsen was the last Brevard County pitcher to win a nine-inning, complete game when he hurled a no-hitter on the road against the Daytona Cubs on April 28, 2009.

Eight of Suter's ten starts with Brevard County in 2013 have been quality starts and he now ranks seventh in the Florida State League in ERA and fifth in WHIP.

The Manatees (6-3 second half, 43-33 overall) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning as they were able to string together three consecutive hits against Clearwater (3-5, 38-38) starter Mario Hollands to start the inning.

Cameron Garfield led off the frame with a single to left and then Nick Ramirez followed with his 14th double of the year to put runners at the corners. Ben McMahan then brought Garfield home as he reached on an infield single in the hole at shortstop.

Greg Hopkins moved both Ramirez and McMahan over 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third with one out, but the 'Tees weren't able to capitalize. Brandon Macias flew out to left and McMahan was doubled off of second base to end the inning.

After Clearwater scored in the bottom of the second on the homer by Stassi, the game remained tied at 1-1 through five.

Chadwin Stang led off the sixth with a triple off of Hollands into the left-center field gap and would come home two batters later on a RBI single through the right side of the infield by Yadiel Rivera.

At the plate for the Manatees, Garfield led the way as he went 3-for-4 with a run scored. It was Garfield's fourth three-hit game of the season. McMahan also had a multi-hit night as he went 2-for-3.

Brevard County's six-game road trip will continue as they will begin a three-game set with the Lakeland Flying Tigers (2-6, 32-44) on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. at Joker Marchant Stadium. The Manatees have an 8-1 record against the Flying Tigers thus far this season.
