Programming Notes:

Birmingham has MiLB.TV coverage, so if you're a subscriber, you can watch this Stars' series (live and/or archived).

***

This Brevard County series, including tonight's twinbill, is available via the Clearwater broadcast crew, as noted above; Dave and Andy return to the airwaves on Wednesday July 3rd.

***

The plan in Billings is for a 7:00 PM Central time resumption of last night's tight affair; this likely means Steve Wendt will be on air at 6:45 for you. With the big league Brewers playing a matinee, you may want to tune in to Helena early on for a hopefully quick positive resolution to the suspended game.

It is going to be hot for the next few days in Phoenix as it is supposed to reach a high of 117 today and 122 for tomorrow and Saturday. I believe it is currently 108 right now in Maryvale and should be around 100-105 at game time.

Delayed after 8 innings: Helena 3, @Billings 3

Helena box score

No idea if this game will be resumed tonight or suspended, but I need to go to bed. Big game so far for Jose Pena, who has a homer--already his third--and a double. Nice game also for Dustin Houle, who's reached three times with two singles and a HBP.

After four games atop the order produced one hit by Omar Garcia, he was dropped to 8th last night and responded with two; he's hitting 9th today and has another one. Garrett Cooper and Taylor Brennan are each 0-3 with a walk; Cooper's five-game hit streak is on the line.

Despite allowing three runs in six innings, very nice start for Anthony Banda, who allowed just four hits while walking none and fanning five; he also posted an 8/3 GO/FO.

Helena play-by-play

The H-Crew is poised to take the lead in the top of the 9th!

Helena Top of the 9th

Jose Pena doubles (2) on a fly ball to left fielder Nick Benedetto.

Dustin Houle singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Taylor Terrasas. Jose Pena to 3rd.

With Charlie Markson batting, wild pitch by Joe Mantoni, Dustin Houle to 2nd.

Charlie Markson strikes out swinging.

Final (11 innings): Helena 7, @Billings 3

Jalen Harris choked immediately after the game was resumed:

Pitching Change: Abel De Los Santos replaces Joe Mantoni.

...but TOTALLY REDEEMED HIMSELF in the 11th:

Helena Top of the 11th

Taylor Brennan walks.

Jose Pena grounds into a force out, first baseman Jhimmy Lopez to shortstop Humberto Valor. Taylor Brennan out at 2nd. Jose Pena to 1st.

Dustin Houle walks. Jose Pena to 2nd.

Charlie Markson singles on a ground ball to pitcher MO Wiley. Jose Pena to 3rd. Dustin Houle to 2nd.

Jalen Harris triples (1) on a line drive to center fielder Phil Ervin. Jose Pena scores. Dustin Houle scores. Charlie Markson scores.

Omar Garcia hit by pitch.

Pitching Change: Joey Housey replaces MO Wiley.

With Angel Ortega batting, Omar Garcia steals (1) 2nd base.

Angel Ortega flies into a sacrifice double play, center fielder Phil Ervin to catcher Julio Morillo to second baseman Avain Rachal to third baseman Taylor Terrasas to first baseman Jhimmy Lopez to right fielder Jonathan Reynoso. Jalen Harris scores. Omar Garcia out at 3rd on the throw.

All the more impressive given that MO was clearly on Billings' side! Nice game also by Ryan Fasano, who stepped in and tossed three scoreless innings today, striking out two and walking none.

Holy biscuits, Tyrone Taylor just got robbed of a HR, Mehring can't believe it, I hope his call is in the highlights and this get changed. The home plate umpire called it foul but everyone else thought it was fair including the left fielder. Erickson is livid...

Wait, the call just got changed after an umpire discussion and it's a game tying HR in the top of the 9th!

edit. I may have jumped the gun, still being debated on the field.

edit2. after 3 minutes of dicussion it is a HR, the opposing manager is kicked out, and the opposing fans are booing up a storm.!

So more drama now in the top of the 11th.

Arica foul tips a ball, but the catcher doesn't hang on. The umpire calls out Arcia thinking it was swinging strike. However McFarland had moved up to 3rd on the called strike out, but for some reason he was forced to move back to 2nd? If they call it a foul tip Arcia is still batting with 2 strikes and McFarland should be back at 2nd. However since they called it a strike out, McFarland has every right to be standing on 3rd. Not the best game for this umpiring crew.

By the way, that was the second missed foul tip in the inning.

Final: Birmingham 9 Huntsville 6

A 9th inning rally came up a couple feet short as Birmingham hung on to defeat the Huntsville Stars 9-6 Thursday night. Stars third baseman Shea Vucinich flew out to the wall with 2 on and 2 out in the top of the 9th to end the game. Starter Brooks Hall (0-2, 9.82) took the loss tonight for Huntsville. Hall went 4 innings, allowing 5 runs, 4 earned, on 7 hits and 3 walks while striking out 2. Hall threw 85 pitches, 49 for strikes and had a 7-3 ground out to fly out ratio.

Perhaps all the innings the bullpen has needed to cover lately is catching up with them. Arcenio Leon was brought in to start the 5th. He lasted only 1/3 of an inning. He was charged with 3 runs on no hits, but 3 walks and a wild pitch. There was also a passed ball charged to catcher Shawn Zarraga that hurt Leon. Mark Williams, recently promoted from Brevard County, relieved Leon with a runner on 3rd and gave up a double to the first hitter he faced, driving in that runner. After walking the next hitter he faced, Williams settled down and pitched fairly well. His line was 2 2/3 innings, 1 earned run on 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 2. Santo Manzanillo pitched a perfect 8th tonight for the Stars, striking out 2.

Stars pitchers issued 7 more walks tonight. They have now allowed 327 on the season, most in the Southern League. 2nd place is Montgomery at 290.

Huntsville Box Score

On offense, the Stars scored enough to win. After collecting double digit hits the last 2 games, they were held to only 9 hits tonight. Huntsville got 2 hit efforts from Jason Rogers, Robinzon Diaz, and Shawn Zarraga. Diaz also drove in 2 runs. Brock Kjeldgaard and Rene Tosoni each singled and drove in a run. Tosoni now has a 4 game hitting streak and has hits in 6 of this last 7 games. Shea Vucinich had the lone extra base hit tonight for Huntsville, a 4th inning double and also reach base on a hit by pitch. Short stop Hector Gomez collected an RBI on a 9th inning ground out.

Huntsville Play By Play

The Stars tied the game at 3 in the top of he 4th...

Huntsville Top of the 4th

Shea Vucinich doubles (5) on a line drive to right fielder Keenyn Walker.

Jason Rogers singles on a line drive to left fielder Jared Mitchell. Shea Vucinich to 3rd.

Rene Tosoni singles on a line drive to right fielder Keenyn Walker. Robinzon Diaz scores. Rene Tosoni out at 2nd on the throw, right fielder Keenyn Walker to pitcher Spencer Arroyo to shortstop Tyler Saladino.

Only to give the lead back in the bottom of the 4th.

Birmingham Bottom of the 4th

Mike Blanke singles on a ground ball to right fielder Kentrail Davis.

Daniel Wagner singles on a bunt ground ball to pitcher Brooks Hall. Mike Blanke to 2nd.

GAME ONE: Brevard County 6, Clearwater 4

Brevard takes twinbill opener in extras

Hawn's homer in the eighth propels 'Tees past Threshers, 6-4

Manatees first baseman Cody Hawn, seen here in a game from earlier this season, hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning that proved to be the game-winner as Brevard County defeated the Clearwater Threshers, 6-4 in the first game of Thursday night's doubleheader at Bright House Field. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Cody Hawn's first home run since May 22 couldn't have come at a better time as his two-run shot in the top of the eighth inning helped the Brevard County Manatees defeat the Clearwater Threshers, 6-4 in the first game of Thursday night's doubleheader at Bright House Field.

A one-out single by Cameron Garfield got things going for the 'Tees (5-2 first half, 42-32 overall) in the eighth. Garfield was then lifted for a pinch runner in the form of Chadwin Stang. Stang's speed would not be needed though as Hawn stepped in and took the 2-2 offering from Clearwater's Colton Miller and deposited over the right field fence for his eighth homer of the season.

Kevin Shackelford came out of the bullpen for Brevard to try and close it out in the bottom of the eighth and he would do so as he retired the Threshers (2-4, 37-37) in order to earn his second save of 2013.

Both teams got on the board right away in the first inning as the Manatees plated two in the first and the Threshers scored one.

Brevard County's first run scored on a RBI single from Mitch Haniger that drove in T.J. Mittelstaedt. Mittelstaedt and the 'Tees benefitted from two wild pitches earlier in the inning from Clearwater starting pitcher Perci Garner to put Mittelstaedt at third. Haniger would later score on a fielder's choice.

The Threshers made it a 2-2 game when Chris Serritella led off the bottom of the second with a home run off of Manatees' starting pitcher Jacob Barnes (5-2, 3.97).

Brevard County took the lead back in the top of the third on a two-out single from Greg Hopkins that plated Nick Ramirez. The 'Tees padded their lead to 4-2 in the fourth on a RBI double by Yadiel Rivera, who was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.

Clearwater though would tie the game up once again in the bottom of the fourth and it started with a one-out triple off the bat of Brock Stassi. Harold Martinez then drew a walk and after Jose Mojica flew out to left, Barnes allowed a two-out single to Peter Lavin that cleared the bases and made it 4-4.

Barnes went five innings total and allowed six hits, while walking three and fanning two. Andre Lamontagne relieved Barnes and threw two scoreless innings to earn his first win of the season.

Despite striking out 11 times, the Manatees were able to record ten hits. Garfield, Hawn and Brandon Macias had two each.

Sounds Defeat RedHawks In Series Opener, 5-2

Hiram Burgos (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Hiram Burgos threw five scoreless innings and the Sounds got homers from Khris Davis and Josh Prince during Nashville's 5-2 victory over Oklahoma City on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium in the opener of a five-game series.

Burgos (1-2) turned in an impressive effort during the fourth start of his rehabilitation stint (second for Nashville) while recovering from a right shoulder impingement. The right-hander worked five scoreless innings, allowing three hits while striking out five batters while throwing 64 pitches (35 strikes).

Khris Davis (2-for-4) gave the Sounds a 1-0 lead in the second when he belted his ninth homer of the year, a one-out solo shot to center off RedHawks starter Asher Wojciechowski.

Prince extended the Nashville advantage to 3-0 in the fifth when he drove a deep two-run homer to left that careened high off the light pole. The blast, which came against Wojciechowski and also plated Scooter Gennett (walk), was the outfielder's seventh of the season.

The Sounds tacked on another run in the sixth when Blake Davis' two-out triple off the right-center wall scored Stephen Parker, who had singled earlier in the frame.

Wojciechowski (3-4) absorbed the loss for the visitors after allowing four runs on five hits in his 5 2/3 frames of action.

Davis ripped his second RBI knock of the night in the seventh to make it a 5-0 contest. The outfielder's two-out double to right off Eric Berger brought in Blake Lalli, who had doubled earlier in the inning.

Oklahoma City got on the scoreboard in the eighth against R.J. Seidel, piecing together three consecutive hits to open the frame culminating with Carlos Perez's RBI infield single.

In the RedHawks' ninth, Jimmy Paredes hit an opposite-field, one-out solo homer to left off Michael Olmsted, his fifth roundtripper of the year, to bring the score to its final 5-2 standing.

The teams continue the series with a 6:05 p.m. doubleheader on Friday evening that will consist of a pair of seven-inning games. The twinbill makes up an April 11th rainout. Right-hander Jimmy Nelson (0-2, 3.00) will make the start for the Sounds to face Oklahoma City left-hander Brett Oberholtzer (5-6, 4.90). Left-hander Zach Kroenke (4-9, 4.08) will toe the slab for Nashville in the nightcap to oppose RedHawks right-hander Jake Buchanan (NR).

GAME TWO: Clearwater 2, Brevard County 1

Manatees edged 2-1 in second game of double dip

Clearwater walks-off with win in the eighth to split doubleheader

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/5/8/52012258/cuts/Stang_5.31_xizwfn25_ae333xl5.JPG

Manatees right fielder Chadwin Stang, seen here in a game from earlier this season, drove in the only run in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader with a solo homer to lead off the top of the sixth for Brevard County in their 2-1 loss to the Clearwater Threshers at Bright House Field. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

CLEARWATER, Fla. - After the Brevard County Manatees won the first game of Thursday's doubleheader in extra innings, the Clearwater Threshers returned the favor with a 2-1 walk-off win in game two at Bright House Field.

Entering the bottom of the eighth, Manatees' (5-3 second half, 42-33 overall) reliever Matt Miller was entering his fourth inning of work and retired two of the first three batters he faced in the frame with a walk to Harold Martinez sandwiched between the two outs.

Lefty Stephen Peterson was then called upon to face the left-handed hitting Peter Lavin. Peterson proceded to walk Lavin to put two on with two out and stayed in the game to face the right-handed hitting Carlos Alonso. Alonso would come up big with a single to left to score Martinez and give the Threshers (3-4, 38-37) the win.

Tyler Cravy (1-1, 3.81) got the spot start for the Manatees and pitched well for four innings with the exception of a solo homer that he allowed to Jonathan Roof with two outs in the bottom of the second. Cravy scattered five hits in his four innings of work and did not walk a batter, while striking out four.

Brevard County's offense was held in check by Threshers' starting pitcher Ethan Stewart as the southpaw hurled five shutout innings and allowed just two hits, while walking one and fanning four.

The Manatees finally got on the board in the top of the sixth when reliever Ryan O'Sullivan entered the game for Stewart. O'Sullivan would be greeted rudely by the first batter he faced as Chadwin Stang led off the frame with his third homer of the season to make it a 1-1 game that would eventually go into extras. Overall though, Brevard County was held to just four hits and one walk in game two.

The two teams will close out their three-game series on Friday night at Bright House Field beginning at 6:30 p.m.
