Link Report for Wed. 6/26 - Tempers Flare, but Stars, Jungmann Victorious

Nate I'm not talking about a couple of inches either way, obviously the strike zone is going to be inconsistent when it's being judged by humans. I'm talking about outside corners like Maddux used to get, I'm talking about 4-5 inches off the plate, or 3-4 inches low on some of these zones.

The strike zone will tighten up as pitchers move up the chain.

Stars Halt Losing Skid at Four

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

After dropping the first two games of their five-game set at Regions Field by a score of 26-4, the Huntsville Stars rebounded with an 8-2 victory against the Birmingham Barons on Wednesday afternoon.

The Stars began their scoring against Barons starting pitcher Stephen McCray (L, 7-6) in the second inning. To begin the frame, third baseman Mike Walker launched an opposite-field solo homer over the left-field wall to put the Stars on the board. Following a double from designated hitter Robinzon Diaz, shortstop Hector Gomez came though with an RBI single to make the score 2-0.

In the fourth inning, the Stars were able to continue that momentum by sending 12 batters to the plate. Highlighted by a two-run double from outfielder Rene Tosoni, two-run single by outfielder Brock Kjeldgaard, RBI double from outfielder Kentrail Davis and a sacrifice fly by second baseman Nick Shaw, the Stars took a commanding 8-0 lead and chased McCray from the game. The six runs in the frame tied the Stars season-high for most runs in any single inning.

That eight-run lead was plenty for Stars starting pitcher Taylor Jungmann. The Brewers 2nd ranked prospect (per MLB.com) improved to 8-6 on the year after giving up one run and five hits in six innings while striking out and walking four batters each. The eight wins for Jungmann now ties him for the Southern League lead with four other pitchers, including Barons hurlers Erik Johnson and Scott Snodgress.

Birmingham scored their only run against Jungmann in the fifth inning on an RBI single from third baseman Dan Wagner. The Barons only other run came on an RBI single by catcher Miguel Gonzalez against reliever Greg Holle in the eighth inning.

On offense, the Stars were paced by Tosoni with two doubles, marking his third multi-hit game in his last five contests. Gomez also chipped in with two singles. For the second game in a row, the Stars had double-digit hits (11) as a team, something they had failed to do the previous six games.

Prior to Wednesday's win, the Stars were outscored by a margin of 37-6 in their previous three contests, which were all losses. The victory also marked the first time the Stars scored five or more runs in a game since June 9th, a 14-game span.

On Thursday, the Stars and Barons will play game four of a five-game series at Regions Field. Huntsville will send RHP Brooks Hall (0-1, 10.13 ERA) to the bump to try to even the series. Birmingham will counter with LHP Spencer Arroyo (5-4, 3.46 ERA). First pitch is at 7:05 CT.

The game was briefly interrupted in the top of the sixth inning as Barons reliever Jacob Petricka hit Stars right fielder Kentrail Davis. Words were exchanged, benches cleared and bullpens emptied. There was some shoving but no punches were thrown.

Final: Huntsville 8 Birmingham 2

Oh Yeah! The Huntsville Stars got a hit from every starter and used a strong pitching performance to dominate from start to finish in defeating the Birmingham Barons 8-2 Wednesday afternoon. Starter Taylor Jungmann (8-6, 3.60) struggled a bit with control but was able to make the pitches when he needed to in order to keep the Barons in check. Jungmann went 6 innings, giving up 1 run on 5 hits and 4 walks while striking out 4. He threw 99 pitches today, 55 for strikes and had a 7-3 ground out to fly out ratio. With his 8th win, Jungmann is now tied atop the Southern League pitchers in wins.

The Stars got 3 innings of solid relief from the bullpen. Greg Holle pitched 2 innings, allowing a run on 4 hits while striking out 2 and Casey Medlen pitched a clean 9th inning. This was Medlen's 6th straight scoreless outing, covering 7 innings.

Huntsville Box Score

Huntsville knocked out 11 hits, drew 10 walks, and scored 8 runs, including 6 in the fourth with 5 coming after 2 were out, in their win today. Jason Rogers, Mike Walker, Adam Weisenburger, and Hector Gomez all reached base 3 times. One of Walker's hits was his 8th home run on the season, a solo home run in the 2nd. Center fielder Rene Tosoni stayed hot with 2 doubles and 2 RBI's. Over his last 6 games, Tosoni is 11-27 (.407) with 2 doubles, 2 home runs, and 4 RBI's. Brock Kjeldgaard also knocked in 2 runs.

Kentrail Davis doubled, scored a run, drove in a run, and was hit by a pitch. One of the drawbacks of weekday baseball is listening at work, and as much as I would rather listen to the game, work does come first. Due to having to be away from my desk, I missed the HBP in the 6th that got the benches to empty. Alex Cohen was kind enough to fill me in stating that after Davis got plunked, he started chirping with Barons catcher Miguel Gonzalez and first baseman Dan Black. The benches emptied but nothing further happened. Davis did have to be restrained by 4 players though. No ejections but, still a couple games left in the series.

I sure hope so (to all). I'm so tired of this "a year at every level" garbage. They need to be more aggressive with these guys.

I think that's equally a draft and developmental issue. If you draft guys who don't have plus stuff and/or control then they are going to move more slowly... seriously if developing MLB plus pitches was that easy every pitcher would have them. I don't mean to suggest that the Brewers are great or even good at developing pitchers, but let's be honest, most of these guys have had a very long way to go to become MLB quality starters.

I have many issues with the Brewers' development staff, but the pitching progression isn't one of them. They are baselines you need to have success at each level and if a pitcher doesn't have pretty good arsenal with decent control they are going to get shredded at AA. Their are some very wide or low strike zones in A ball that pitchers can take advantage of, those advantages start to disappear the higher up the ladder you go. For example Lorenzo was exploiting a particular umpire's strike zone last night, the T-Rats have had that same crew a bunch over the last month so they know the nuances of both umpires' zone very well.

Well you know more than I do so I'll defer on the strike zone issue, but that seems like a tough sell to me.

The argument for needing a baseline of success at every level is one I don't buy at all. Did Peralta have a baseline of success at AAA? He had some good stretches, I'll give you that. The final numbers were not very good. I certainly would not call his arsenal plus. He has a plus fastball but I would think his secondary pitches are not in the plus range, at least not yet. Still, despite the numbers I would rather have Peralta in the rotation than Narveson, Estrada, Figaro, Fiers, Burgos, and any number of other guys that have been given a shot.

Final: DSL Brewers 0, DSL Nationals 1

DSL Brewers Box Score

The Brewers out-hit the Nationals 6-2, but once again all six hits were singles. Pedro Peguero, Marcos Padilla and Melvin Tejada combined to pitch a terrific game, allowing just one run on two hits. Peguero gave up both of the hits and unfortunately they both came in the fourth inning to push across the game's only run. Padilla and Tejada each pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Padilla walked three batters, but Tejada set down all six hitters he faced in order.

Yunior Santana was on base three times for the Brewers offense. He singled twice and was hit by a pitch. Second baseman Jorge Quiterio also had a pair of base hits. Leudi Otano was in right field for this game and went 1-for-3 with a walk. Juan De Leon had the other base hit for the Brewers. Juan De Los Santos walked twice. Quiterio, Santana and Daniel Leonardo each stole a base, while Santana and Otano were each caught stealing. Santana is now just 5-for-11 in stolen base attempts this season.

DSL Brewers Play-By-Play

The Brewers had their chances in this one. The best may have been in the second inning with runners at second and third and one out, but they couldn't cash in.

Leudi Otano walks.

Yunior Santana singles on a line drive to left fielder Aldrem Corredor. Leudi Otano to 2nd.

Juan De Leon strikes out swinging.

Natanael Mejia grounds out, third baseman Younaifred Aguero to first baseman Wester Suarez

The lone run of the game came in the fourth inning on a two out double.

DSL Nationals Bottom of the 4th

Kelvin Gutierrez strikes out swinging.

Kevin Cerda singles on a ground ball to second baseman Jorge Quiterio.

Wester Suarez grounds into a force out, third baseman Raphachel Colatosti to second baseman Jorge Quiterio. Kevin Cerda out at 2nd. Wester Suarez to 1st.

Delayed after 8 innings: Helena 3, @Billings 3

Helena box score

No idea if this game will be resumed tonight or suspended, but I need to go to bed. Big game so far for Jose Pena, who has a homer--already his third--and a double. Nice game also for Dustin Houle, who's reached three times with two singles and a HBP.

After four games atop the order produced one hit by Omar Garcia, he was dropped to 8th last night and responded with two; he's hitting 9th today and has another one. Garrett Cooper and Taylor Brennan are each 0-3 with a walk; Cooper's five-game hit streak is on the line.

Despite allowing three runs in six innings, very nice start for Anthony Banda, who allowed just four hits while walking none and fanning five; he also posted an 8/3 GO/FO.

The H-Crew is poised to take the lead in the top of the 9th!

The Helena game is going to continue tonight.

The Billings broadcast is setting things up for a return now as of 11:20 Central. The rain has become a light drizzle, they are working on the field, which took on a lot of water apparently.

So guessing approx. 11:30 - 11:45 Central, although you should tune in now if reading this in time, since the H-Crew is so close to finishing a top of the 9th inning go-ahead rally (2nd and 3rd, one out).

Haven't heard Steve come back yet, when he does, the Helena broadcast would be here.

LumberKings send Rattlers to seventh straight loss

Clinton wins 6-3 behind three RBI from Taylor Ard

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CLINTON, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are still looking for their first win of the second half of the Midwest League season. The Clinton LumberKings and Taylor Ard sent the Rattlers to a 6-3 defeat at Ashford University Field on Wednesday night. Ard homered and drove in three runs for the LumberKings to pace them to their fourth straight victory.

Clinton (38-37 overall, 5-1 second half) collected a two-out, two-run single from Ard in the bottom of the first inning to grab a 2-0 lead.

Orlando Arcia got Wisconsin (29-42, 0-6) on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. He cracked a home run to lead off the frame to cut into the Clinton lead.

The Rattlers had an opportunity to at least tie the game in the top of the fourth inning. Mike Garza singled with one out. Parker Berberet singled to left to send Garza to third. But, Clinton starter Matt Anderson retired the next two batters to end the inning.

Ard pushed Clinton's lead back out to 3-1 with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Dario Pizzano made it 4-1 with a one out home run in the bottom of the fifth.

The Rattlers tried to put together a two out rally in the top of the sixth. Roache was on base when Berberet and Alfredo Rodriguez singled to load the bases, but Anderson escaped the inning with no runs scored by Wisconsin.

Clinton started to pull away in the bottom of the sixth. Marcus Littlewood walked to start the inning and moved to second on an infield grounder. Gaby Guerrero followed with a bloop single to right-center to drive in Littlewood. Guerrero was going to second on the throw home, but the throw was cutoff for a play at second. Unfortunately, the throw to second wound up back out in center to allow Guerrero to take third base.

The infield came in to cut down the run at the plate. Tim Lopes hit a hard grounder near third. Garza made a diving attempt to stop the ball, but the ball glanced off his glove into foul territory for an RBI single and a 6-1 Clinton lead.

The LumberKings went to Matt Vedo in the top of the seventh as their relief pitcher and he promptly loaded the bases with a pair of walks and an infield single. Vedo left the game as he injured his leg on the infield single.

Tyrone Taylor greeted Clinton reliever Jochi Ogando with a sharp single to left that scored one run. One out later a sacrifice fly by Garza plated a run to make the score 6-3, but that was all for the Rattlers in the inning.

Clinton loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the eighth, but did not score to add any insurance.

And the Rattlers almost made them pay for that lack of insurance.

Wisconsin had two runners on with two outs in the top of the ninth. Garza sent a line drive that appeared to be heading to right-center. But, Lopes, the Clinton second baseman, made a leaping grab to deny Garza and end the game.

There were bright spots for the Timber Rattlers. Taylor extended his current hitting streak to ten games with his single in the seventh. Victor Roache had three hits to lift his season average to .231 after he started the half at .209. Mike Strong worked 2-2/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen to give the offense a chance to come back.

But, Wisconsin stranded eleven runners and - including the final game of the first half - the Rattlers have lost seven straight games.

Game three of the series is set for Thursday night at Ashford University Field. Tyler Wagner (6-6, 3.78) is set to be the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Clinton sends Scott DeCecco (5-6, 4.50) to the mound. Game time is 7:00pm. Tune in for broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm.

HOME RUNS:

WIS:

Orlando Arcia (2nd, 0 on in 3rd inning off Matt Anderson, 0 out)

CLN:

Taylor Ard (5th, 0 on in 4th inning off Eric Semmelhack, 0 out)

Dario Pizzano (5th, 0 on in 5th inning off Eric Semmelhack, 1 out)

WP: Matt Anderson (4-6)

LP: Eric Semmelhack (1-4)

SAVE: Jochi Ogando (1)

TIME: 2:37

ATTN: 1,152

All that is not gold – Postgame post for June 26, 203

Wisconsin Boxscore

There are some individual efforts I'm really enjoying but it would be nice if the team would actually win some games. This T-Rats team isn't all that far away, instead of a different part of the team picking up the rest each night for a victory, a different part of the team consistently let's them down. Well to be fair the recurring theme has been too many free bases for the opposition, but regardless of where those extra bases are coming from, win some games gentlemen.

Brewers-Mustangs suspended in ninth due to rain, will resume Thursday

Billings Gazette

The Pioneer League baseball game between Billings and Helena was suspended late Wednesday after a two-hour rain delay.

The game will resume at 6:00 PM today (7:00 Central) at Dehler Park with the score tied 3-3 with one out in the top of the ninth inning. It will precede the originally scheduled game between the Mustangs and Brewers.

Helena’s Jalen Harris was batting with an 0-1 count versus Mustangs relief pitcher Joe Mantoni when a steady rain began to fall, forcing the 3,431 in attendance to run for cover. The game was delayed at 9:14 p.m., and was expected to resume at 11:15.

The field underwent heavy treatment by the grounds crew, but the decision was eventually made to suspend the game due to what were described as unplayable field conditions.

Helena’s Jose Pena and Billings’ Phillip Ervin each homered. Pena hit a solo shot to tie the game in the second inning. The Brewers knotted the game again in the seventh.

After the completion of Wednesday’s game, Billings right-hander Luke Moran is expected to face Helena righty Danny Keller. Both pitchers come in with identical 1.80 ERAs.

After four games, David Denson sports a .529 OBP and 1,085 OPS and reached four times here. After six games, 2B Francisco Castillo has a .414/.469/.517 line, and reached three times here. If they were on Twitter, well, you know...

Brewers allowed four unearned runs which complicated things.

Just-turned 21-year-old 18th round pick LHP Clint Terry has fanned 11 and walked zero in his first six innings.

AZL Brewers Game Log

I am drooling just thinking about the Brewers possibly hitting on all three of thier high upside HS picks in Williams, Neuhaus, and Denson. Obviously way way to early to think that but at least the first couple games have been promising
