Nice outing for Thornburg; 10 K's and only a couple of solo shots on his card. He seems to be pitching better of late.

Is Tommy Toledo a legitimate bullpen prospect? I have no idea what kind of stuff he has.

87/29 K/BB over 74.1 IP is pretty solid for Thornburg this season, its a shame he's going to be 0-10 in 15 games started

Pirates' Willy Garcia has power potential, if I had to compare him to a Brewer prospect... maybe a younger and more athletic Nick Ramirez at the plate? Regardless here's the feature on his big day as well.

Quoting both to address both.

Yes Toledo is a legit bullpen prospect, he's not an upper 90s guy, but I like him.

Thornburg's problem has never been his K rate or BB rate, the problem is that when he gets hit, he gets hit very hard. I pointed out his continual struggle allowing XBHs last year and that trend continues, it's just that last year he wasn't giving up many hits, they were just big. This year he's giving up more hits and continuing to allow too many XBHs, so he's giving up more runs.

I don't like his delivery at all, but he's such a good athlete if he'd just get rid of all the unnecessary movement he'd probably be dynamite with his location and we'd be talking about him in a much more positive fashion. Very few pitchers can miss with FBs from the thighs to the waist and be successfull.

FINAL: Brevard County 3, Dunedin 1

'Tees sweep Jays with Tuesday matinee win

Brevard allows seven walks, but two-hits Dunedin in 3-1 victory

By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees

Manatees pitcher Chad Pierce, improved to 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA out of the bullpen, as he allowed just one hit in four innings of relief in Brevard County's 3-1 win over the Dunedin Blue Jays on Tuesday afternoon. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

VIERA, Fla. - An early morning wake-up call was no problem for the Brevard County Manatees as they completed a three-game sweep of the Dunedin Blue Jays with a 3-1 win on Tuesday afternoon at Space Coast Stadium.

A combined 12 walks in the game forced a slow pace to start, but the free passes proved to be important to both teams as three of the four runners who scored in the game were put on by walks.

Oliver Dominguez scored the first run of the game in the second inning, and the only one for Dunedin, as he reached on a walk and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Derrick Chung came through with an RBI single to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead that lasted until the bottom of the third.

Brandon Macias led off the third with a base hit, with a wild pitch giving him second base. Consecutive one-out walks to Yadiel Rivera and Mitch Haniger respectively, loaded the bases for Greg Hopkins to single in the tying run. Cody Hawn then drew a bases loaded walk to give the Manatees (4-2 second half, 41-32 overall) a 2-1 lead. Both Macias and Hopkins had two hits each.

Brevard County tacked on another run in the seventh, when Yadiel Rivera doubled to drive home Chadwin Stang, who had reached on a free pass.

Rivera has now hit safely in his last seven games at a .522 clip (12-for-23) with five runs scored, five runs batted in, one home run and three doubles. He has struck out just twice in that stretch and has drawn a walk in three straight contests for just the second time in his professional career. The shortstop also took five walks in a four-day span from July 15-18, 2011 with Helena.

Cody Scarpetta (0-2, 5.93) turned in arguably the best start of his young season thus far, with the only knock against him being his four walks. Dunedin (1-5, 38-34) could only scrape up one run with one hit against the righty, with Scarpetta sitting three of his opponents down on strikes.

Chad Pierce earned the win in relief of Scarpetta. Pierce hurled four scoreless frames, while allowing one base hit and three walks to go along with three strikeouts before Tommy Toledo's perfect ninth inning earned him his 13th save.

Dunedin starting pitcher Casey Lawrence left the game with an apparent injury after amassing a full count on Nick Ramirez to lead off the second inning. Blue Jays' reliever Marco Grifantini was hung with the loss, despite surrendering just two runs in five unexpected relief innings.

Brevard County will open a six-game road trip with a three-game set against the Clearwater Threshers (2-2, 37-35), beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday night at Bright House Field. Jacob Barnes (5-2, 3.57) will take the mound for the Manatees.

Nashville's Tyler Thornburg Fans 10; Allows 4 Home Runs

METAIRIE, La. - The Nashville Sounds rallied to overcome five home runs delivered by the New Orleans Zephyrs Tuesday afternoon at Zephyr Field to win the series finale 7-5.

Down 4-2 in the eighth, the Sounds worked the bases loaded with no outs to spark the beginning of their late-game rally. Catcher Anderson De La Rosa cut the Z's lead to one by nubbing an RBI ground out to first base, scoring Hainley Statia, who singled to lead off the frame.

Stephen Parker followed with a game-tying RBI single into right field. Cole Garner, 2-for-4, knocked a single into right to load the bases again and shortstop Blake Davis, 2-for-4, belted a double off the centerfield wall to put the Sounds ahead 6-4. The team batted around in the inning, and picked up their final run on Josh Prince's sacrifice fly.

Despite allowing the Zephyrs their fifth solo home run in the 8th inning, the Sounds held on for their first win of the season when trailing after six innings, having gone 0-for-their-first-44 chances.

Sounds first baseman Hunter Morris put the Sounds on the board in the first inning with an RBI double off the left-field wall. The hit scored Statia, 2-for-4, who singled on a ball deflected by the pitcher.

Starting pitcher Tyler Thornburg helped his own cause in the second inning with an extra-base knock into centerfield that scored Garner. Outfielder Gorkys Hernandez tried to make a diving catch on the play, but the ball got by him to give Thornburg a double and the Sounds a 2-0 lead. All nine of Nashville's starters recorded a hit on the day, combining for 13.

With the game tied 2-2 in the fifth inning, Thornburg delivered his 10th strikeout of the day, fanning Hernandez. Thornburg's 10 strikeouts match the most recorded by a Sounds starter this season, tying Thornburg's May 11 effort against Sacramento.

Despite his career day, the Zephyrs touched Thornburg for four solo home runs to allow the Z's back in the ball game. Matt Downs hit one to left field in the second inning and Kyle Skipworth lifted the game-tying shot in the fifth.

New Orleans outfielder Kyle Jensen, in the second PCL contest of his career, hit the go-ahead home run in the sixth. The blast was followed by another from Downs to put the Z's up 4-2.

The four home runs allowed by Thornburg is the most allowed by a Sounds starter this season, surpassing R.J. Seidel's three-homer allowance from June 10 against Omaha. Downs' two-homer game is the first against the Sounds since Omaha's Brett Hayes got two on June 10.

Picking up the win for Nashville was reliever Kyle Heckathorn (4-2), who pitched a scoreless seventh. Closer Rob Wooten netted his 16th save for two innings of work on the hill for Nashville. He allowed one run on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

After joining the entire Pacific Coast League for an off day tomorrow, the Sounds open a seven-day, eight-game homestand on Thursday against Oklahoma City and Round Rock that includes a Friday doubleheader. The Sounds will be wearing retro blue uniforms for BURGER KING Throwback Thursday, where fans can enjoys $2 beer and select concession items.

It was a pretty well pitched game for the Brew Crew. Starter Victor Diaz pitched 5.2 innings of three hit, shutout baseball. He did allow five walks, but also struck out five. Final: @Helena 6, Great Falls 5

The box score stopped updating in the top of the 7th with the game knotted at 4--can whoever reads this first after it's completed post some notes?

When I tuned in it was the top of the 9th with one on and two outs and the H-Crew up by two. Andy Hillis immediately proceeded to give up a single and two walks to force in a run before snapping off a curveball for strike three and the final out of the game, leaving the bases loaded.

Pizzano homer stops Rattlers

Clinton beats Wisconsin 2-1

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CLINTON, IA - Clinton LumberKings outfielder Dario Pizzano came up with big hits against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers often in the first half. He did it again in the first meeting of the second half with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to provide winning margin. Clinton topped the Timber Rattlers 2-1 Tuesday at Ashford University Field.

Wisconsin (29-41 overall, 0-5 second half) jumped in front with a run in the top of the first inning. Orlando Arcia reached on an error and Tyrone Taylor followed with a single to put runners on the corners with one out. Taylor extended his current hitting streak to nine games with that single.

Victor Roache was next and he delivered a sharp single to left to drive in Arcia for a 1-0 lead.

Rattlers starting pitcher Leonard Lorenzo pitched out of a pair of early jams and was cruising through the middle innings. But, he walked Ketel Marte with one out in the bottom of the sixth and fell behind Pizzano 1-0. Pizzano hit the next pitch over the wall in right field. That put Clinton (37-37, 4-1) up 2-1. Lorenzo allowed two runs on four hits with five strikeouts over his six innings, but took the loss.

The Rattlers had chances in the seventh and eighth innings. Mike Garza singled to start the seventh inning, but Adam Giacalone grounded into a double play to stop the rally. Orlando Arcia singled with two outs in the top of eighth to get Taylor to the plate. Taylor sent a pop fly to shallow right near the foul line that looked like it may drop. But, Jabari Henry made a sliding catch to deny Taylor his third hit of the game.

Wisconsin went down in order in the top of the ninth and dropped their sixth straight game.

Taylor went 2-for-4 in the game and is 18-for-31 (.581) during his nine-game hitting streak.

Game two of the series is Wednesday evening. Eric Semmelhack (1-3, 4.14) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Clinton will send Matt Anderson (3-6, 4.48) to the mound. Game time is 7:00pm. Tune in for the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm.

HOME RUN:

CLN:

Dario Pizzano (4th, 1 on in 6th inning off Leonard Lorenzo, 1 out)

WP: Charles Kaalekahi (1-0)

LP: Leonard Lorenzo (1-4)

SAVE: Scott Bordonaro (1)

TIME: 2:29

Wisconsin Boxscore

Too bad for Leonard Lorenzo who pitched far and away his best game of the season thus far. Every single walk and misplay has seemed to come back and bite the T-Rats all season.

Tyrone Taylor sucks and stuff, that's all. He's not going to get many national accolades because he's not a power guy, but he's been as white hot as any Brewer prospect in a long time. The only better stretch I remember was Mat Gamel's 33 game hit streak, and maybe someone else will recall, but I'm pretty sure Mat didn't hit over .400 when he was on that run.

Victor Roache has been hitting much better since the break while Orlando Arcia is back on the 1-4, 1-5, 1-3 0-for plan, but he's been more aggressive lately, hopefully both players on the verge of an extended hot stretch.

Wisconsin Recap

This play wasn't even close, Chris was confused why Marte even tried to stretch it?

Clinton Bottom of the 3rd

  • Jabari Henry strikes out swinging.
Ketel Marte singles on a line drive to right fielder Max Walla. Ketel Marte out at 2nd, right fielder Max Walla to shortstop Orlando Arcia.
Dario Pizzano flies out to left fielder Victor Roache.

Final: Birmingham 12 Huntsville 2

6 pitchers, including catcher/third baseman Joey Paciorek combined to give up 12 runs on 11 hits and 14 walks as Birmingham again coasted to an easy 12-2 win Tuesday night. Starter David Goforth made his Huntsville debut tonight. It did not go well. Goforth (0-1, 13.50) worked 2 2/3 innings, giving up 6 runs, 4 earned, on 6 hits and 4 walks while striking out 1. Goforth threw 85 pitches over those 2 2/3 innings, 42 for strikes. There will be better nights.

The Huntsville bullpen was asked to cover 5 1/3 innings tonight. This after going 7 1/3 yesterday, 5 innings on Sunday, and 4 innings on Saturday. Tonight, it was Frankie De La Cruz first out of the pen for the Stars. De La Cruz came on with the bases loaded and 2 out in the 3rd and was able to get out of that jam. He came back out for the 4th and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks. Stars radio broadcaster Alex Cohen commented that De La Cruz "looked gassed". Dan Meadows came on to work the 5th, but was only able to get 2 outs. Meadows line was 2/3 innings, 2 runs on 1 hit and 4 walks and a wild pitch. Eric Marzec relieved Meadows with the bases loaded and got out of it with a strike out. Marzec pitched the 6th and allowed a run on a solo home run. Casey Medlen was the most effective pitcher tonight for Huntsville. He worked a clean 7th Rather than extend Medlen another inning, catcher/third baseman Joey Paciorek was used to pitch the 8th. Paciorek's 2nd time pitching in a mop up role as he also pitched for Helena back in 2009. Paciorek, throwing in the low to mid 80's, allowed a run on a hit and 3 walks.

Although they gave up 12 runs, it could have been worse. The Barons left the bases loaded 3 times tonight and stranded a total of 15 runners.

Rough night for catcher Shawn Zarraga as the Barons stole 6 bases.

BASERUNNING

SB: Walker, K 3 (28, 2nd base off Goforth/Zarraga, 2nd base off Goforth/Zarraga, 3rd base off Goforth/Zarraga), Black, Da 2 (3, 2nd base off Goforth/Zarraga, 2nd base off De La Cruz, F/Zarraga), Thompson, Tr (14, 3rd base off De La Cruz, F/Zarraga).

Huntsville Box Score

The Stars offense was again limited to just 2 runs on 5 hits tonight. The Stars scored their runs on a 7th inning sacrifice fly from Shawn Zarraga and a solo home run from Rene Tosoni in the 8th. Third baseman Mike Walker had 2 of the Stars 5 hits, including a double. Shea Vucinich and Robinzon Diaz had the other 2 hits. The Stars drew 3 walks, one each by Vucinich, Nick Shaw, and Jason Rogers.

The good news, the Stars (1-6 second half, 30-45 overall) get to try and put this game behind them rather quickly as tomorrow's game will begin at 11:00am Central. Righty Taylor Jungmann (7-6, 3.76) will look to play the role of stopper for the Stars as he will be on the mound. Stars Radio Broadcaster Alex Cohen will be on the air at 10:45 with the pregame show. This series is also available on MiLB TV for those with a subscription.
