Nick Ramirez struck out for the 100th time this season...he also hit his 16th HR. I wished he walked more. He could be 3TO material.

Ramirez has actually already walked more this year than he did all of last year and is even approaching respectability in that department:

2011: 11 BB / 256 PA

2012: 26 BB / 414 PA

2013: 28 BB / 300 PA

Who knows why--could be be improved pitch recognition or just timidity or passiveness--but it's interesting.

Final: DSL Tigers 2, DSL Brewers 1

DSL Brewers Box Score

Catcher Kevin Martinez was the offensive star today for the Brewers. On base all three times before being lifted for a pinch runner, Martinez walked once and had a pair of singles. He also scored the team's only run. Opposing runners were 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts against Martinez.

Center fielder Yeraldy Martinez was 1-for-3. 1B Juan De Los Santos was 1-for-4, as was left fielder Juan Ortiz. Third baseman Jorge Quiterio had a hit and an RBI in four at bats. His .352 average is best on the team through the first 20 games. Ortiz stole his second base of the season. He's the only Brewer to have played in every game thus far.

The Brewers did not record an extra-base hit in this one, all six hits went for singles. On the bright side the defense played an error-free game.

Miguel Diaz was the starting pitcher for the Brewers. It was his second start of the season, though he only worked one inning in his first outing on June 18th. Today he pitched three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out one. Nattino Diplan came on in the fourth and really struggled with his control, walking five of the seven batters he faced, recording just two outs, and picking up his third loss of the young season. Joshua Torres pitched the final 5.1 innings. In easily his best outing of the year, the 19-year-old Puerto Rican righty struck out eight while allowing four hits and walking just one.

DSL Brewers Play-By-Play

Diplan's control issues in the fourth inning turned out to be the deciding factor in the Brewers loss

DSL TIGERS inning 4

- Diplan, N. to p for Diaz, M..

- Valdez, I. walked. Contreras, F grounded out to 3b; Valdez, I. advanced to second.

- Pena, Y. walked.

Final: Birmingham 14: Huntsville 2

Well, it wasn't their worst loss of the season. Birmingham scored early and in bunches as they defeated Huntsville 14-2 Monday night. Stars starter Drew Gagnon didn't make it out of the 1st inning. Gagnon (1-2, 9.19) worked 2/3 of an inning, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits. Both outs he recorded were via the strike out. Gagnon threw 43 pitches in his work tonight, 27 for strikes.

Former starter Arcenio Leon had a bullpen saving effort tonight. Leon came on to relieve Gagnon in the 1st and ended up pitching 4 1/3 innings tonight. Over those 4 1/3 innings, Leon allowed a run on 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 1. Leon threw 50 pitches, 34 for strikes and posted a 7-4 ground out to fly out ratio. Leon, making a push to get back into the rotation.

Santo Manzanillo, like Gagnon, could not complete an inning of work. Manzanillo was brought in to pitch the 6th but was only able to record 1 out before being taken out. He gave up 5 runs on 6 hits, 1 walk and a hit batter. Santo's ERA now sits at 7.71. Frankie De La Cruz, back with the Stars as of today, came on with the bases loaded and 1 out in relief of Manzanillo. After letting a run score on a wild pitch, De La Cruz struck out the next 2 batters to get out of the jam. He then worked a scoreless 7th as well, recording 2 more strike outs, so 4 of the 5 outs De La Cruz recorded were via strike out. Greg Holle also rejoined the Stars from Nashville, but his return was not as smooth as De La Cruz's. Holle pitched the 8th and gave up 4 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks.

Huntsville Box Score

Huntsville Manager Darnell Coles tried some different things tonight with the line up, but the Stars still only managed 2 runs. Jason Rogers got his first start of the season in the outfield, starting in left, and recorded an outfield assist. Brock Kjeldgaard played his first game at first base tonight. Shea Vucinich got the start at 2nd base tonight and was a bright spot on offense.

Huntsville recorded 10 hits tonight, but could only plate 2. Center fielder Rene Tosoni led the offensive attack, going 3-5. This was Tosoni's second 3 hit game over his last three games and is 8-18, .444, over his last 4 games. Shea Vucinich was 2-5 with a run scored and catcher Adam Weisenburger went 2-3 with a walk, double, and a run scored. Weisenburger's double was the Stars only extra base hit. Robinzon Diaz, Brock Kjeldgaard, and Joey Paciorek each singled, Paciorek's drove in a run. Jason Rogers drove in the Stars other run with a sacrifice fly. Kentrail Davis drew his team leading 40th walk tonight. He had 54 last season.

Huntsville Play By Play

Read at your own peril!

Tomorrow night, righty David Goforth will make his AA debut for Huntsville (1-5 second half, 30-44 overall). Game time is scheduled for 7:05 Central with Stars Radio Broadcaster Alex Cohen starting things off at 6:50 with the pre game show. Don't forget, this series is also available on MiLB TV for those with a subscription. Remember to turn the sound down on the TV and the sound up on the radio broadcast! Oh Yeah!!!

Justin Jirschele a WI native and a young man I watched play FB, Basketball, and Baseball in HS is playing for the White Sox against Helena tonight. Interesting that I missed he was signed as an UDFA.

Another local boy I watched play multiple sports in HS Jake Hermsen was topping out in the mid to upper 80s as a pitcher in HS and went to Northern IL for college. He was drafted in the 28th round last year by the Dodgers but had a rough start to the season and was put on the DL in early May and hasn't appeared in a game since.

Picking up on Sessile's comment about Nick Ramirez, another guy whose approach seems to have improved this year is Yadiel Rivera. His K/BB/AB numbers:

2010 ®: 9/72/206

2011 (R+): 14/91/330

2011 (A): 4/34/103

2012 (A): 26/119/465

2013 (A+): 17/39/234

Decent uptick in walks, big downtick(?) in K's. Of course his ISO has also crashed this year, but some of that could be Brevard. He's interesting.

FINAL: Brevard County 4, Dunedin 3

'Tees edge Dunedin, 4-3

Magnifico earns no-decision in Brevard debut

Manatees starting pitcher Damien Magnifico allowed three runs on five hits in 3.2 innings of work in his Brevard County debut on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium in Viera against the Dunedin Blue Jays. Magnifico did not factor in the decision as the Manatees defeated the Blue Jays, 4-3. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

VIERA, Fla. - Two runs in the first inning made it look like it would be another offensive showing for the Brevard County Manatees on Monday night, but things slowed down and ended in a 4-3 win for the 'Tees over the Dunedin Blue Jays at Space Coast Stadium.

In that first inning, Yadiel Rivera doubled with one out to get things started and then Mitch Haniger followed with a triple to bring Rivera home. Haniger then scored on a Nick Ramirez ground out.

Another run was added in the third to make it 3-0 in favor of the Manatees (3-2 second half, 40-32 overall), when Cody Hawn drew a two-out walk, stole his second base of the year and scored on a Greg Hopkins RBI single.

Things started to turn in the top of the fourth, when Brevard County starting pitcher Damien Magnifico (0-0, 7.36) retired the first batter before allowing a single to Gabe Jacobo. Consecutive wild pitches from Magnifico allowed Jacobo to reach third and he eventually scored when K.C. Hobson grounded out to second.

Two straight singles and a walk loaded the bases, ending Magnifico's Manatees' debut with two outs in the frame. Mark Williams came on and issued back-to-back walks to force in a pair of runs and tie up the contest at 3-3.

Magnifico was charged with all three Blue Jays' (1-4, 38-33) runs in 3.2 innings, as he scattered five hits and walked two with a pair of strikeouts.

Williams, Stephen Peterson and Tommy Toledo combined to hurl four perfect innings after the game was tied, with Williams eventually picking up the win and Toledo earning his 12th save.

Ramirez became the hero with a no-doubt home run, his 16th of the year, to lead off the bottom of the fifth and give Brevard a 4-3 advantage that they would not relinquish.

For Dunedin, All-Star starting pitcher Scott Copeland took the hit for the loss with the 'Tees scoring all four of their runs in his five innings of work. It took seven hits and two walks drawn by Brevard County to put those runs on the board, with Copeland recording only one strikeout on the night.

Brevard County will go for the three-game sweep of Dunedin on Tuesday in a 10:35 AM (9:35 Central) matinee game. Cody Scarpetta (0-2, 7.45) will get the start for the Manatees, with Casey Lawrence (4-6, 4.16) taking the hill for the Blue Jays.

Sounds Quieted By Zephyrs, 7-2

Nashville's Hunter Morris Blasts 14th Homer In Loss

Nashville Sounds

METAIRIE, La. - The Nashville Sounds' two runs fell short of the mark set by the New Orleans Zephyrs, who defeated Nashville 7-2 Monday night at Zephyr Field to take the series lead with one game to go.

The Z's got on the board in the second inning, plating a run on Koyie Hill's two-out double, which scored Kyle Jensen, who doubled down the left-field line in his first PCL at-bat.

New Orleans added to their lead in the third inning with four runs off of Sounds starter Chris Narveson (1-3). Outfielder Gorkys Hernandez, 4-for-5, started the frame with his second home run of the season over the wall in center. Donovan Solano recorded a triple with his ball hit off the left-field wall and scored on Jake Smolinski's single to make it 3-0.

Sounds first baseman Hunter Morris cut into the Zephyrs' lead in the top of the fourth inning with his 14th home run of the season. The solo shot leapt over the right-field wall and made it 3-1, but the Z's got the run back in the home half of the inning with Matt Downs' home run just fair of the left-field foul pole.

Narveson finished with four runs allowed over six innings of work and took the loss, his third. His 10 hits allowed match the most allowed by a Sounds starter this season, tying Frankie De La Cruz's 10-hit contest on April 29 at Oklahoma City.

Reliever Michael Olmsted took over for Narveson in the sixth inning. The Z's cashed in on a leadoff walk to Hill when Hernandez slapped an RBI single into left field. Hill was in scoring position as a result of a passed ball. Olmsted also chucked a wild pitch with runners on, plunked a batter and logged an error in the frame, but Hill's run was all he let in.

Olmsted was relieved by Tim Dillard, who pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning. It is only the eighth time in their last 60 innings that Sounds pitching has set down the opposing batters in order, and only the second time this series.

Dillard finished the game for Nashville, but not before New Orleans plated another pair of runs. With two outs and two runners in scoring position, Hainley Statia misfielded a groundball up the middle that allowed a run to score. The play was followed with an RBI single. Both runs were unearned.

Sounds catcher Blake Lalli, three-for-four, gave the Sounds their second run of the game with his RBI double to left field in the eighth inning that scored Josh Prince, who reached base on balls.

Zephyrs starter Duane Below (4-2) picked up the win, scattering six Nashville hits across 5 2/3 innings to allow just one run. Adam Reifer netted the save, his first.

Nashville wraps the road trip Tuesday morning at 11:30 in game four against the New Orleans Zephyrs. RHP Tyler Thornburg (2-3, 6.34) will make the start for Nashville against the Z's RHP Matt Neil (2-5, 3.90). Baseball returns to Greer Stadium Thursday, June 27.

Nashville Box

Statia: 1-4, E (fielding)

Josh Prince: 0-3, BB

Lalli: 3-4, 2B, RBI, PB, 0/1 CS

Sean Halton: 1-4

Morris: 1-3, HR, RBI, BB

Cole Garner: 1-4

Narveson: 1-2, 2B

-Hainley Statia bunt grounds out, pitcher Duane Below to second baseman Matt Downs.

-Josh Prince grounds out, pitcher Duane Below to first baseman Joe Mahoney.

Final: @Helena 7, Great Falls 6

Helena box score

Walkoff!

As TheCrew07 pointed out, Taylor Brennan went deep twice tonight, his second and third of the year. He had just one homer in 141 plate appearances in the AZL last year, but per Steve Wendt (via And That) Brennan's got some thunder in his lumber. Stop me if you've heard this before, but Garrett Cooper also had a nice game, 2-3 with a walk.

Michael Ratterree and 36th-rounder Jesse Weiss, making his pro debut, also had two hits. Well, Weiss made half of his debut, anyway; he was drafted as a first baseman but DHed tonight. Also debuting and reaching twice (single, walk) was undrafted free agent Nathan Orf, who's listed as an outfielder but started at second base. Clint Coulter started behind the plate and doubled once in four trips. Ruben Ozuna made his first appearance of the year, hitting 9th and going 0-4 while somehow committing two errors in left field. Jose Pena and Dustin Houle did not play. I'm going to guess that Voyagers catcher Trey Wimmer does not have a great throwing arm--the Brewers doubled their season total with four steals and were not caught.

The first of two *arretts the Brewers drafted from an SEC school this year, third-round RHP Barrett Astin was on the bump for the first time as a pro. Astin got the start and lasted two innings. He allowed three hits and a walk but no runs, while striking out two and inducing three groundouts. Following Astin in the game just as he did in the draft was fourth-round RHP Taylor Williams, also making his debut. Williams didn't fare as well as Astin, allowing two runs and seven baserunners in 2.2 innings. I'd love to get a scouting report on Astin and/or Williams from someone who listened to the game if Steve provided one.

The Mad Bahamian, Sean Albury, nearly blew the game by allowing Great Falls to score three runs (albeit unearned ones) and take a 6-5 lead in the top of the 8th; it was his control that was mad tonight, as he walked and hit a batter each and unleashed two wild pitches, along with allowing a hit.

Helena play-by-play

Clutch two-out work to tie and win the game:

Helena Bottom of the 8th

Garrett Cooper singles on a ground ball to right fielder Arby Fields.

Taylor Brennan grounds into a force out, second baseman Justin Jirschele to shortstop Tyler Shryock. Garrett Cooper out at 2nd. Taylor Brennan to 1st.

With Clint Coulter batting, Taylor Brennan steals (1) 2nd base.

Clint Coulter pops out to second baseman Justin Jirschele.

Nathan Orf singles on a line drive to right fielder Arby Fields. Taylor Brennan scores.

Jesse Weiss strikes out swinging.

Helena Bottom of the 9th

Ruben Ozuna strikes out swinging.

Omar Garcia called out on strikes.

Renaldo Jenkins singles on a ground ball to right fielder Arby Fields.

With Michael Ratterree batting, Renaldo Jenkins steals (2) 2nd base.

Michael Ratterree singles on a fly ball to right fielder Arby Fields. Renaldo Jenkins scores.

Here is this week’s installment of “Mondays with Mike” with Sounds manager Mike Guerrero, who discusses the Sounds’ current road trip to this point (2-6 through Iowa and now New Orleans), the recent hitting of outfielder Sean Halton, the Sounds’ struggles to throw out base stealers this season (they’ve allowed a league-high 92) and the lack of steals from their runners (45 steals, 3rd-fewest in the league).
