Sounds Media Notes:

GOOD CHEESE: Outfielder/first baseman Sean Halton -- the hottest hitter in the Pacific Coast League -- is batting .525 (21-for-40) during a career high-tying 12-game hitting streak. He has recorded multi-hit efforts in six of his last seven games, including three-hit performances in three of his last four contests. The slugger’s .477 average and .549 on-base percentage are tops in the PCL for the month of June, and Halton’s .640 average (16-for-25) and 1.839 OPS in the last week of play are the best in the PCL over that stretch; however, he was edged for league player of the week honors by Reno’s Mike Jacobs, who produced a lower average and OPS than Halton but slightly better home run and RBI numbers while playing in hitter-friendly facilities in Reno and Tucson.

Boo, PCL!

From the Manatees --

PLAYOFF PUSH: Coming into today, four teams in the FSL North are separated by just 1.0 game in the standings.

The Dunedin Blue Jays are currently in 1st place, half of a game ahead of the 2nd-place Manatees.

The Daytona Cubs and Clearwater Threshers are both 1.0 game out of 1st and a half game behind the Manatees. Daytona and Clearwater begin a two game series against each other, beginning tonight while Dunedin will play three against Tampa.

***

Also, it should be noted that Brevard County's opponent this week, Lakeland, is under .500, but they just had their nine-game winning streak snapped in the final game before the All-Star break. Great race these next three nights!

Here's a link to the Tampa - Dunedin box score. Go Tampa Yankees, up 1-0 early.

No real need to have a rooting interest quite yet for Daytona - Clearwater, but here's their box.

Final: DSL Blue Jays 14, DSL Brewers 8

Oh, my.

The Cerveceritos actually outhit the Blue Jays kids, 11-9. Brewers farmhands drew three walks as well.

So why the long faces, DSL fans?

Brewer pitchers walked 17, hit two others, and threw six wild pitches. Ouch.

Last July, the Brewers inked a Venezuelan RHP named Yosmer Leal for a not-insignificant $370,000. After two shutout innings in his pro debut June 5th, the last two outings have been shaky. In this one, Leal allowed four runs in 2.2 innings, walking five. Leal is just 17 (18 next February), so let's just sit back and enjoy a hopeful growth process.

Another Venezuelan RHP, 2nd year pro 18-year-old Junior Flores, stranded two of Leal's three 3rd inning inherited baserunners, but allowed six 4th inning runs, including a grand slam. That made the score 10-3.

Last season, in his 2nd season in the Tampa Bay DSL system, RHP Nelson Arguila walked 35 in 39.1 innings, so his six walks in 1.2 innings here isn't a shocker. More shocking was that Arguila was only charged with two runs. Arguila turns 25 in September, so we won't use the term "age-appropriate" in this sentence. Wait, guess we just did.

3rd year 21-year-old RHP Orlando Torrez earns points for respectful work late in this contest.

***

The legend of 17-year-old switch-hitting shortstop Daniel Leonardo grows. On base three more times, plus a stolen base. We search for potential breakout stars in these boxes, and after two weeks, Leonardo has given us someone to follow.

With all those pitches, no surprise two catchers split duties in this three hour, 30-minute clunker.

Since I have 3 "off days" in a row I thought I'd do some stats work to keep myself busy, keep in the mind the MWL has 16 teams.

RUNS

1. Cedar Rapids (Twins) - 403 (68 Games)

2. Fort Wayne (Padres) - 347 (69 Games)

...

12. Wisconsin - 293 (65 Games)

The Rattlers have been stunningly average in every way at the plate and obviously being 12th in RUNS they've been slightly below average with runners in scoring position (even having played fewer games).

MWL Team Pitching Leaders

ERA

1. Bowling Green (Rays) - 3.22 (68 Games)

2. Fort Wayne (Padres) - 3.42 (69 Games)

...

12. Wisconsin - 4.20 (65 Games)

RUNS

2. Burlington (Angels) - 1.30 (65 Games)

...

16. Wisconsin - 1.48 (65 Games)

Pitching wise the T-Rats have been solidly in the bottom 3rd for the season, yet all of their All-Stars were pitchers, go figure.

MWL Team Defense

ERRORS

1. Dayton (Reds) - 72 (69 Games)

2. Peoria (Cards) - 72 (68 Games)

...

11. Kane County (Cubs) - 85 (66 Games)

12. Wisconsin - 85 (65 Games)

FLD %

1. Peoria (Cards) - .973 (68 Games)

2. Dayton (Reds) - .972 (69 Games)

...

14. Wisconsin - .965 (65 Games)

PB

1. Cedar Rapids (Twins) - 2 (68 Games)

2. Quad Cities (Astros) - 5 (69 Games)

...

16. Wisconsin - 26 (65 Games)

CS%

1. Quad Cities (Astros) - 46% (69 Games)

2. Bowling Green (Rays) - 46% (68 Games)

...

4. Wisconsin - 36% (65 Games)

If you're an avid Link Report reader none of the defensive numbers should come as a surprise with the exception of maybe the CS%. For all of the issues the T-Rats catchers have had, throwing out base runners has not been one.

Objectively being an average hitting team with below average pitching and defense it would appear that the T-Rats are rather fortunate to be 29-36 on the season. In the first half the Rattlers finished 7th out of 8 teams in the MWL Western Division.

Well Jungmann wasn't much of a strike out pitcher to begin with, Hellweg is probably just trying to make sure he can throw strikes rather than seeing whether guys will whiff at stuff outside the zone, Bradley is probably just trying to get good results and focusing too much on striking guys out probably won't help.

Audio from Nashville — “Mondays with Mike (Guerrero)”

Here is this week’s installment of “Mondays with Mike” with Sounds manager Mike Guerrero, who discusses the Sounds’ home stand to this point, the first-ever major league call-up for outfielder Caleb Gindl, the unfortunate circumstances and injury for Mike Fiers, the Sounds’ recent defensive mistakes and the improvement Guerrero is seeing with the team’s offense.

Why is it that all the Brewers top pitching prospects seem to be lacking in K's this year? Or am I just imagining this? No one is striking anyone out

To be painfully blunt, it's because our top pitching prospects aren't top prospects on the larger scale.

Final: Chattanooga 3 Huntsville 1

The Stars were again held in check as the Chattanooga Lookouts took the series with a 3-1 win Monday Night. For the 5 games series, the Lookouts pitchers held the Stars to a total of 9 runs, and with that, the Stars still took 2 games. Tonight, it was Ross Stripling that handled the Huntsville hitters and held them to 3 hits and 1 unearned run. Stars starter Andy Moye (3-7, 4.15) was the hard-luck loser tonight. Moye worked 5 innings, allowing 3 runs but only 1 earned, on 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5. The earned run came on a Joc Pederson home run to lead off the 4th. Moye threw 77 pitches, 49 for strikes and had a 4-4 ground out to fly out ratio.

3 Stars relievers combined to throw 4 shutout innings out of the bullpen tonight. Santo Manzanillo pitched the 6th, allowing a hit and striking out 1. Dan Meadows worked the 7th and 8th. The sidearmer was on tonight. He allowed a hit and hit a batter, but had a 4-0 ground out to fly out ratio. Casey Medlen worked a clean 9th, striking out 1.

Huntsville Box Score

The Stars offense was silent tonight. Their only run came as a result of a 2 out throwing error by Lookouts pitcher Ross Stripling. Pitcher Andy Moye led the Stars offense, going 1-2 with a double and scoring the Huntsville run. For the season, Moye is now 4-14 (.286) with 2 doubles. He is the only Stars pitcher to record a hit, so far. Second baseman Nick Shaw led off the game for Huntsville with a single and Kentrail Davis added a single in the 4th. For the season, Davis is now 15-33 for a .455 average against the Lookouts. Rene Tosoni and Hector Gomez each drew a walk for the Stars.

Huntsville Play By Play

The Stars only run scored in the 3rd

Huntsville Bottom of the 3rd

Hector Gomez grounds out, third baseman Sean Burroughs to first baseman Angelo Songco.

Andy Moye doubles (2) on a line drive to left fielder Bobby Coyle.

Nick Shaw grounds out, first baseman Angelo Songco to pitcher Ross Stripling. Andy Moye to 3rd.

Rene Tosoni reaches on a throwing error by pitcher Ross Stripling. Andy Moye scores. Rene Tosoni to 3rd.

Jason Rogers grounds out, shortstop Osvaldo Martinez to first baseman Angelo Songco.

And so ends the first half of the season for Huntsville. Their record ended up at 29-39 with 2 games cancelled due to rain. 13-22 at The Joe and 16-17 on the road. A couple quick notes, Brock Kjeldgaard, Jason Rogers, and Kentrail Davis each played in all 68 games. Kjeldgaard is 2nd in the league with 12 home runs and Rogers is tied for 4th with 10. Rogers still leads the league with 48 RBI's and is 4th with 113 total bases. Kjeldgaard is tied for 7th with 110 and Davis is 9th with 106. Davis is 3rd in OBP at .391, 6th in batting average at .286, and 5th in OPS at .837. Kjeldgaard leads the league with 80 strikeouts.

On the pitching side, Taylor Jungmann is 2nd in the league with 7 wins. Greg Holle is tied for 5th with 26 games. Jimmy Nelson, prior to his promotion to Nashville, recorded 72 strikeouts. He's still 4th in the league with that mark. Ariel Pena is 6th with 70 strikeouts. When looking at areas of struggle, Pena leads the league with 42 walks allowed, Arcenio Leon is 3rd with 35, and Jungmann is 5th with 33.

Team batting average for Huntsville is .238, 7th out of 10 teams in the Southern League. The team OPS is .679, also 7th. The team ERA is 4.13, 9th overall. Stars pitchers lead the league with 281 walks issued and 39 batters hit by a pitch. Too many runners not having to earn their way on base really hurt in the first half. The Stars allowed 50 unearned runs to score, most in the league.

So, after a travel day tomorrow, Huntsville (0-0) will begin a 5 game series in Jacksonville against the Suns. Drew Gagnon should be the starter for Huntsville, but nothing has been announced just yet. Game time is set for 6:05 Central. Stars radio broadcaster Alex Cohen will have the pre game show, starting at 5:50.
