Rattlers drop final game of first half

Wisconsin strands ten in loss at Kane County

GENEVA, IL - Pierce Johnson pitched seven scoreless innings and the Kane County Cougars held on to make Johnson the winning pitcher. Kane County topped the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. The game was the final game of the first half of the Midwest League schedule for both teams.

 

Reggie Golden gave Kane County (30-36) the lead in the third inning. The Cougars left fielder homered to lead off the frame to make the score 1-0.

 

The Cougars pushed their lead to 4-0 with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth. Rock Shoulders hit a solo home run to left-center for the first run. Gioskar Amaya was next and he singled. Carlos Escobar drove in Amaya with a double off the wall in left. Then, Reggie Golden's high popup to short right dropped between three Wisconsin defenders. The ball deflected into the Kane County bullpen off a Rattler who was sliding to make the catch and Golden wound up on third with a triple.

 

Wisconsin (29-36) tried to put together a two-out rally in the top of the sixth. Tyrone Taylor drew a walk. Michael Reed singled and Adam Giacalone drew another walk to load the bases. Mike Garza cracked a line drive, but the ball was hit right at Cougars third baseman Jeimar Candelario who snared the ball for the third out.

 

Johnson allowed four hits, walked three, and struck out five as he set a professional high for innings pitched with seven.

 

Garza got a second chance with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the eighth inning against Cougars reliever Nathan Dorris. Garza cashed in this opportunity with a two-run single to left.

 

In the ninth, the Rattlers rallied against reliever Stephen Perakslis. Adrian Williams singled with one out and Alfredo Rodriguez drew a walk to put the tying runs on base. Max Walla's high fly to right looked like it may drop, but Bijan Rademacher made a sliding catch for the second out. The game ended when Perakslis snuck a 2-2 fastball just on the outside corner past Taylor for strike three.

 

The loss dropped the Timber Rattlers into seventh place in the Western Division of the Midwest League, a half game behind sixth place Kane County. But, the teams will start fresh with 0-0 record when the second half begins on Thursday night.

 

Reed, who had a pair of singles and a walk on Sunday, extended his on base streak to 36 games. That is the third longest on base streak in minor league baseball this season.

 

The Timber Rattlers are off for the Midwest League All-Star Break until Thursday night. Wisconsin opens the second half of the 2013 Midwest League schedule on Thursday night with a home game against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Game time is 7:05pm.

I must say the attendance number jumped out at me, that's like AA numbers... A Cubs affiliate doesn't deserve such fine support!

 

This was a pitcher's duel until the 4th when Tyler Wagner allowed an XBH parade as Chris noted above.

 

Michael Reed and Tyrone Taylor both did what they've been doing for a while now. Orlando Arcia did not play, when I looked at the line-up I thought it was a very Yost-esque Sunday line-up but they had their chances to do some damage and just didn't get much done. I wasn't able to listen to the game as I had to work for the 2nd weekend in a row so I'm not sure what the story with Arcia is/was.

Final: Huntsville 3 Chattanooga 1

 

A combination of good pitching and timely hitting lifted the Huntsville Stars to a 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon. 5 Stars pitchers combined to limit the Lookous to 1 run on 3 hits in the win. Right hander Brooks Hall, who was roughed up in his last appearance, got his 1st AA start on Sunday. Hall was much better working as a starter. He went 4 1/3 innings, allowing 1 run and only giving up 1 hits but 3 walks. Hall also struck out 4. Of his 57 pitches, 38 were strikes. Hall also posted a 4-1 ground out to fly out ratio. Hall saw his ERA drop from 27.00 to 10.80.

 

Arcenio Leon, who had been starting for the Stars this year, was first out of the bullpen today. Leon finished up the 5th and also pitched the 6th. His line was 1 2/3 innings, no runs, 1 hit, 1 walk, and 1 strike out. Casey Medlen worked 1 scoreless innings, giving up a walk. Brian Garman (1-0, 3.90) worked a clean 8th, earning the win. Greg Holle closed the game out with a scoreless 9th, picking up his 6th save in the process. It was Holle's 4th straight scoreless outing.

 

Huntsville Box Score

 

The Huntsville offense was held in check most of the game, until coming alive in the 7th. 3rd baseman Mike Walker jump started the offense in the 7th by hitting his 7th home run on the season. Nick Shaw stated the winning rally with a lead off single in the 8th. After a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Rene Tosoni, 1st baseman Jason Rogers drove in his league leading 48th RBI with a single, driving in Shaw, to give the Stars the lead. After a wild pitch moved Rogers into scoring position, left fielder Kentrail Davis drove him in for the Stars final run of the game.

 

Brock Kjeldgaard led the hit parade with 2 of the Stars 8 hits, finishing 2-4 and raising his average to .262. Both Shaw and Davis reached base twice, each singling and drawing a walk. Rene Tosoni added a single to go along with his sacrifice. Catcher Shawn Zarraga had the other Stars hit.

 

Team RISP: 2-for-4.

Team LOB: 5.

 

Clutch hitting led to the win today. Well done!

Stars Mount Comeback, Even Series With Lookouts

In danger of losing three straight games, the Huntsville Stars erased a one-run deficit and scored three runs in the seventh and eighth inning combined to beat the Chattanooga Lookouts by a score of 3-1 on Sunday at Joe Davis Stadium.

 

For the third night in a row though, the Stars were shutdown by a Lookouts starting pitcher. On Sunday, righty Duke Von Schamann blanked the Huntsville offense through six innings, giving up just three hits and striking out four in his second Double-A start.

 

On the pitching side, Stars starting pitcher Brooks Hall did his best to keep up with Schamann. In his first ever Double-A start, the 22-year-old didn't give up a run in his first four innings of work.

 

However, in the fifth, Chattanooga would get to the Anderson, SC native and score their only run of the game. After striking out outfielder Blake Smith, Hall walked both first basemen J.T Wise and catcher Griff Erickson to lead to his exit from the game in favor of righty Arcenio Leon. The next at-bat, a RBI single from third baseman Ozzie Martinez gave Chattanooga the lead.

 

The score stayed that way until the seventh inning when Lookouts righty Steve Smith (L, 1-0) came into the game to relieve Schamann. After striking out Stars outfielder Brock Kjeldgaard to begin the frame, Smith served up a solo homer to third basemen Mike Walker that just got over the wall and the outstretched arms of Smith in right-field to tie the game.

 

With Smith still in the game to start the eighth inning, the Stars were able to take advantage of their previous momentum. Following a leadoff single by second basemen Nick Shaw and a sacrifice bunt by outfielder Rene Tosoni, a RBI single from first basemen Jason Rogers scored Shaw to give the Stars the lead. Then, after Rogers advanced to second on a wild pitch, outfielder Kentrail Davis came through with another RBI single to make the score 3-1.

 

Aside from Hall and Leon, the Stars got a combined three innings of scoreless relief from three pitchers. Lefty Brian Garman earned the victory in relief, improving to 1-0 on the year after retiring the Lookouts in order in the eighth inning. Righty Greg Holle notched his sixth save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning.

 

The win for the Stars was just their fourth of the season when tied or trailing after the seventh inning.

 

On Monday, the Stars will try to win their series with Lookouts as the two teams will play the final game of a five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium. Huntsville will send RHP Andy Moye (3-6, 4.34 ERA) to the bump as Chattanooga will counter with RHP Ross Stripling (2-1, 3.30 ERA). First pitch is at 6:43 CT.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Despite twice rallying to tie the game Sunday at Greer Stadium, the Nashville Sounds were unable to keep up with the New Orleans Zephyrs, who defeated the home team by the score of 8-5. The Nashville loss gives New Orleans the series win with still one game to go.

 

Knotted up at four runs apiece in the seventh inning, the Zephyrs worked a run off reliever Johnnie Lowe (0-1), who was in to pitch his fourth inning and final inning, as Kyle Skipworth connected for a two-out, RBI-double that gave New Orleans a lead they never relinquished.

 

Lowe was charged with the loss, despite limiting the Z's to one run on three hits across four innings. Travis Webb entered in the eighth to face three batters, who he allowed to reach base via two hits and one walk.

 

Rob Wooten came in with the bases loaded and allowed all three inherited runners to score. Kevin Kouzmanoff hit a ground out to score Kevin Mattison; then with two outs, a fourth-ball wild pitch plated Donovan Solano. After fielding the pitch that caromed up the backstop netting, catcher Blake Lalli through errantly to Wooten, who was covering home, to give the Zephyrs their final run of the game.

 

The Z's started out with three runs in the first inning off starter R.J. Seidel, but the Sounds quickly responded as outfielder Sean Halton continued his impressive hitting display by cranking a home run off the guitar scoreboard in left field.

 

The homer scored three runs to tie the game and extended Halton's hit streak to 12 games, which ties a career-best from the slugger. He finished the day a triple shy of the cycle.

 

The Zephyrs retook the lead in the fourth inning as Mattison opened the frame with a triple to right field before scoring on Solano's single. The RBI-knock ended Seidel's afternoon, finishing with four runs on four hits over three innings of work. The right-handed pitcher fanned two and walked a career-high seven batters.

 

Seidel loaded the bases before recording an out to begin his troublesome first inning, and let in the first run by beaning Kouzmanoff. A fielder's choice ground out scored the Z's second run, which was followed by Gil Velazquez's RBI-single to make it 3-0.

 

The Sounds leveled the game for a second time in the home half of the sixth inning, using Khris Davis and Stephen Parker singles to move around Hunter Morris, who reached base on balls.

 

Only pitching 2/3 innings, New Orleans' James Leverton (1-1) picked up the win for New Orleans, while Jonathan Albaladejo recorded his third save.

 

The Sounds will wrap their homestand Monday night at Greer Stadium looking to avoid the series sweep to the New Orleans Zephyrs (AAA-Marlins). LHP Zach Kroenke (3-8, 4.53) gets the nod for Nashville opposite the Z's LHP Brad Hand (2-3, 3.19).

Sean Halton now has 19 hits in his last 32 ABs (.594) including 3 HR and 4 doubles, over his last 10 games. He's also drawn 7 walks in those 10 games for an OBP of .667. His June OPS is 1.322.

I only link this because it appears Olt's eye injury which caused his early season issues is a result of a concussion he got in winter league baseball. Man do I hate the winter leagues, I still maintain the weight room would be much more valuable for baseball prospects.
