Prospect Hot Sheet (June 14): Joey Gallo Slugs Seven Home Runs

4. Javier Baez, ss, Cubs

Team: high Class A Daytona (Florida State)

Age: 20

Why He’s Here: .304/.429/.870 (7-for-23), 5 R, 1 2B, 4 HR, 8 RBIs, 5 BB, 3 SO, 2-for-2 SB

The Scoop: In the interest of full disclosure, Baez is on the Hot Sheet for essentially one day of work. But what a day it was. Baez became the first minor leaguer since 2011 to hit four home runs in a game, and only the second player in Florida State League history to do it. Maybe less noticed are the signs that Baez is catching up to the pitchers when it comes to making contact. He struck out in 30 percent of his at-bats in April, 25 percent in May and so far just 15 percent in June while his walk rate has improved.

10. Robert Stephenson, rhp, Reds

Team: low Class A Dayton (Midwest)

Age: 20

Why He’s Here: 0-0, 0.00, 1 GS, 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 SO

The Scoop: This is likely Stephenson’s last appearance on the Hot Sheet for at least a couple of weeks, as he’s gone on the disabled list with a hamstring injury. Before the injury occurred, it was becoming fair game to wonder when Stephenson would be promoted. After all, he’s allowed four earned runs in his last six starts. Over those 37 2/3 innings, he has walked five while striking out 50.

13. Albert Almora, cf, Cubs

Team: low Class A Kane County (Midwest)

Age: 19

Why He’s Here: .433/.438/.667 (13-for-30), 5 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 7 RBIs, 1 BB, 6 SO, 1-for-1 SB

The Scoop: If not for injuries, Almora’s season would be getting more acclaim. He missed the first month with a hamate bone injury that had sidelined him from early in spring training. He announced his return by going 7-for-11 in his first two games with low Class A Kane County. A hamstring injury knocked him out for a few days later in May, but he’s returned from that to rip off an 11-game hitting streak. Almora’s ability to pile up multiple hits in a game is remarkable. In just 19 games, he’s already had three or four hits six different times.

NOT HOT

Gift Ngoepe, ss, Pirates: Ngoepe is one of the more interesting human-interest stories in the minors as a South African who was spotted, signed and has made it up to Double-A. Unfortunately for him, he’s going to have to hit a lot better to be more than just a great story. This week he went 1-for-13, lowering his numbers to .159/.255/.253 at Altoona.

Prospect Hot Sheet Chat With J.J. Cooper

Andrew (Chicago): Almora seems to be absolutely raking, I know it can be reverted to small sample size, and needing to pitchers to adjust to him so he can learn to adjust back, but is he in a similar position as Buxton, were they both need to face better competition?

J.J. Cooper: Almora is really locked in right now, but I do think it’s a different situation than Buxton. In Buxton’s case, he’s gone through the league twice and even after pitchers made adjustments, he’s too good for the league. In Almora’s case, he’s played 19 games. He hasn’t gotten through the league once yet. There’s no reason to promote him yet, as he is still gaining plenty by going out and getting comfortable in the MWL.

Mike (Cincinnati): Has Robert Stephenson shown enough this season to bypass Billy Hamilton as the Reds top prospect?

J.J. Cooper: It’s definitely now a discussion. Stephenson is very good.

Jeff (Philadelphia): Has Alen Hanson improved his chances at sticking at SS since he got benched or is there a lot more to do?

J.J. Cooper: Still work to do. Scouts I’ve asked that question say they think it’s 40-60 whether he’ll be able to make it to the bigs as a shortstop. Still seems more likely he ends up as a second baseman.

frank (allemtown): Has Tony Sanchez become a prospect again? Hitting .300 with power at AAA not too bad. Have you heard any concerns about his throwing? Rumors that he has the yips even getting the ball back to the pitcher circulating in PGH.

J.J. Cooper: Not rumors. He has the yips at times. I’ve heard that from multiple scouts. The offensive improvement is solid, but he still has some defensive work to do to get to the big leagues.

MJ (Valpo): Has Yorman Rodriguez turned a corner this season? Will he ever put all his tools together enough to see Cincy someday?

J.J. Cooper: It’s a good couple of weeks, but no. I’m not buying that this is a turnaround. A .770 OPS in the Cal League is not exactly tearing the cover off the ball. Count me as a skeptic, but the tools could still all come together so I can’t rule it out. I would say the chances of him being an impact player are pretty small.

stan (dayton): Ok, this isn't really a hot sheet question, but say Stephenson is ready for the big leagues in a year or two and the Reds could only afford to only sign Bailey or Latos long-term, who would you choose?

J.J. Cooper: I’d try to find out whichever one gives me a better deal for the contract. I think you don’t go wrong with locking up either one. Is that a cop out?

Final: Wisconsin 5, Kane County (Cubs) 1

Rattlers calm Cougars

Lopez tosses six scoreless innings and Taylor gets four hits to lead the way

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GENEVA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Kane County Cougars 5-1 Friday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Jorge Lopez pitched six shutout innings and the Timber Rattlers offense cashed in on their opportunities to win the first game of the final series of the first half.

Both teams threatened in the first inning. Alfredo Rodriguez singled to start the game, but was erased on a force play at second as Orlando Arcia reached on a fielder's choice. Tyrone Taylor followed with a bunt single and Arcia noticed that no one was covering third base. Arcia raced for third, but pitcher Michael Heesch managed to pick up the loose ball and tag out the Rattler runner just before he reached the bag. Then - with Michael Reed at the plate - Taylor got caught stealing 1-3-6 to end the inning.

The Cougars (29-35) got a leadoff walk from Bijan Rademacher and a single from Albert Almora to start the bottom of the first. A fly out to center put runners on the corners. The Rattlers got a strike-'em out, throw-'em out double play when Lopez struck out Jeimer Candelario on a 3-2 pitch and catcher Brent Dean's throw to second was in plenty of time to throw out Almora.

The game remained scoreless until there were two outs in the top of the fifth. Wisconsin (28-35) had runners at the corners and Alfredo Rodriguez at the plate. Rodriguez doubled to right-center to drive in both runners for a 2-0 lead.

Wisconsin extended their lead in the sixth inning. Tyrone Taylor singled, his third hit of the game, to start the inning. Michael Reed, who had walked in the fourth inning to extend his on base streak to 34 game, walked again after Taylor's single. Then, Victor Roache ended an 0-for-27 slump with a sharp single to center to load the bases with no outs.

Mike Garza drove in Taylor with a sacrifice fly to deep center. The ball was hit deep enough to allow Reed to tag and move to third base. Parker Berberet dropped a safety squeeze to got Reed home and moved Roache to second base. Dean capped the scoring in the inning with a double to left-center to chase Roache home with the run that made it 5-0 Wisconsin.

Lopez finished off his night with a 1-2-3 sixth inning, including a strikeout of the final batter he faced. Lopez allowed two hits, walked one, hit one, and struck out six.

The Cougars got on the board in the eighth against reliever Ryan Gibbard. Wilson Contreras tripled with one out. Oliver Zapata knocked in Contreras with a grounder to second base. But, Gibbard got the final out of the eighth and pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his second save.

Taylor paced the Timber Rattlers offense with the second four-hit game of his professional career. Rodriguez added a single to his two-run double for a multi-hit game.

Game two of the series is Saturday night at 6:30pm. Preston Gainey (2-5, 7.30) is the scheduled starting pitcher of the Timber Rattlers. Dillon Maples (0-1, 7.99) is set to start for the Cougars. Tune in for the Miller Lite Pregame Show on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Jorge Lopez with unquestionably his best start of the season, just 2 hits and 1 walk against 6 strike outs. Everyone is happy, happy, happy!

Tyrone Taylor says, call me a raw? I'll show you! Leave me off the hot sheet because I don't hit HRs? I'll just keep playing my game. He's extremely easy to like.

Victor Roache hit the ball hard all 3 times and finally pushed through a single to end his long hit-less drought.

I'm sure Chris will have much more in his blog later tonight.

Final: Chattanooga 4 Huntsville 1

The Stars and Lookouts engaged in another old fashioned pitchers duel Friday night, but this time Chattanooga came out on top, winning 4-1 at The Joe. Stars starting pitcher Ariel Pena was impressive again, this time in front of Assistant General Manager Gord Ash. Pena (5-5, 3.00) ended up taking the loss as the Lookouts capitalized on 2 mistakes, hitting a couple of solo home runs. Pena went 6 innings, allowing just those 2 runs, on just 3 hits, 2 walks and a wild pitch while striking out 7. Both the walks and the wild pitch came in the 6th. Possible that Pena was tiring a bit. Temperatures are getting up there. Of the 95 pitches Ariel threw, 61 were for strikes. He also had a 7-4 ground out to fly out ratio. 7 of Pena's last 8 starts have been quality starts. Really great to see the improvement he's made from earlier this season. Personally, I think he's positioning himself for a promotion.

Lefty Brian Garman worked 2 innings out of the bullpen tonight. Garman allowed a hit and nothing else. It would be nice to see Brian become more consistent. Casey Medlen worked the 9th. The Lookouts got a couple insurance runs off Medlen on 3 hits. Casey did strike out the side.

Huntsville Box Score

The Stars offense was provided by catcher Robinzon Diaz. His 8th inning solo home run providing the Stars lone run tonight. Huntsville was limited to 5 hits total, and Diaz's home run was their only extra base hit. They got singles from Nick Shaw, Kentrail Davis, Rene Tosoni, and Shea Vucinich. Jason Rogers drew his 15th walk on the season. In 254 plate appearances, Rogers has 15 walks, but 4 have come in the last 3 games.

Huntsville Play By Play

Huntsville's offensive highlight for tonight.

Huntsville Bottom of the 8th

Robinzon Diaz homers (2) on a fly ball to left field.

Rene Tosoni grounds out, second baseman Rafael Ynoa to first baseman J. Wise.

Shea Vucinich flies out to right fielder Blake Smith.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Adam Weisenburger replaces Brian Garman.

Adam Weisenburger called out on strikes.

Huntsville (28-37) and Chattanooga will be back at it tomorrow for game 3 of the series. Taylor Jungmann (7-5, 3.78), the # 2 prospect in the Brewers organization, will take the mound for the Stars. Game time is scheduled for 6:43 Central with Stars radio broadcaster Alex Cohen starting things at 6:30 with the pre game show.

Shortstop Daniel Leonardo hit his first pro home run. He also drew a walk in five plate appearances. Leonardo doesn't turn 18 until August and is handling himself pretty well in his first season of pro ball. Second baseman Raphachel Colatosti was on base all four times, with a single, a triple and two walks. DH Juan De Los Santos singled and walked. Yerald Martinez was 1 for 4 with a double. Catcher Kevin Martinez and right fielder Leudi Otano each had a base hit. Gian Rizzo started for the Brewers and pitched five strong innings. It was a much better outing for Rizzo than his last appearance, as he did not allow a run and gave up just two hits. Joel Dicent gave up three runs in his inning of work. He allowed just one hit, but walks were a killer for him as he walked three batters. Axel Cordero gave up one run in his one inning.

**milb.com didn't have the box score posted for this game yet. I'm taking off for Iowa in the morning and may not be able to get to it, if someone would be so kind as to link to the box score once it's up, I'd greatly appreciate it. Also, I mentioned in the Roll Call thread that I'll be traveling through Wednesday. Sounds Drop Series Opener Against New Orleans, 6-3

Halton Goes 3-for-4 To Extend Season-Best Hit Streak To 10 Games

Nashville Sounds

Sean Halton (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The New Orleans Zephyrs doubled up the Nashville Sounds, 6-3, on Friday evening in front of 6,921 fans at Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series.

Nashville out-hit New Orleans, 13-5, in the contest, getting knocks from every starter except Stephen Parker (0-for-3).

Outfielder Sean Halton went 3-for-4 to extend his longest hitting streak of the year to 10 games for Nashville. He is batting .500 (16-for-32) over the 10-game stretch, the Sounds' fourth double-digit streak of the season.

Cole Garner (3-for-4) and Anderson De La Rosa (2-for-4, two doubles) also added multiple-hit efforts in the losing affair.

The Sounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning against Z's starter Matt Neil.

Halton got things started with a one-out single and moved to third on a De La Rosa double before scoring the night's first run on Garner's Baltimore chop RBI single to the left side of the infield. Ozzie Chavez followed with a well-executed safety squeeze bunt to plate De La Rosa with the inning's second score.

After starter Chris Narveson retired the first six New Orleans batters in order to start the contest, the Zephyrs sent all nine hitter in their lineup to the plate against the southpaw in the third inning to grab a 4-2 lead, capitalizing on a pair of Nashville fielding errors in the frame. Donovan Solano (2-for-5)and Kevin Kouzmanoff recorded RBI singles during the inning.

Kouzmanoff drove in his second run of the night in the fifth when his sacrifice fly to right plated Gorkys Hernandez to up the visitors' lead to 5-2.

Narveson (0-2) suffered the loss in his fourth rehab outing with the Sounds, allowing five runs (three earned) on three hits while walking five batters and striking out four in his 4 2/3 innings of work.

New Orleans left fielder Jake Smolinski made it a 6-2 contest in the sixth when he drilled a leadoff solo homer to left off Michael Olmsted for his fourth roundtripper of the year.

The Sounds missed out on an opportunity to cut into the deficit in the sixth. After loading the bases with one out against Neil, Z's reliever Zach Phillips took over on the hill and induced an inning-ending double-play groundout from Chavez to squelch the threat.

Neil (2-2) earned a win for New Orleans after holding the Sounds to two runs over his 5 2/3 frames of action, striking out seven batters.

Nashville mounted a rally in the ninth against Zephyrs reliever Jonathan Albaladejo. After De La Rosa led off with a double but was thrown out trying to extend the play to a triple, Garner doubled off the batter's eye and scored on pinch-hitter Hainley Statia's ensuing RBI single to right to cut the lead to 6-3. Albaladejo fanned Khris Davis for the second out and Z's closer Chris Hatcher was summoned to fan Blake Davis for the final out to nail down his league-leading 21st save of the year.

The teams continue the series with a 6:35 p.m. contest on Saturday. Right-hander Mike Fiers (1-1, 1.23) will make the start for Nashville on his 28th birthday and face New Orleans right-hander Jared Rogers (1-1, 4.91).

From the Kane County Chronicle Game Story:

Cougars hitters couldn’t solve Wisconsin starter Jorge Lopez (3-5), who came into the contest with an ERA of 7.47. Lopez allowed only two hits in six innings of work. He walked one and struck out six.

“He mixed his pitches well,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said. “He stayed down in the zone. He threw his changeup both to righties and lefties, so our guys had three pitches to worry about instead of two. Usually righty on righty at this level, you’re not worried about the changeup too much.”

Reed, Lookouts Stifle Stars

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

In a well-fought pitchers battle, Huntsville righty Ariel Pena was outdueled by Chattanooga lefty Chris Reed as the Stars lost to the Lookouts by a score of 4-1 in game two of a five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium on Saturday night.

Unfortunately for Pena, he would put himself in line for the loss early in the ballgame. After retiring the first two batters he faced, Pena served up a solo homer to Lookouts outfielder Joc Pederson to give Chattanooga a 1-0 lead in the first. For Pederson, the homer was his ninth on the season and third against the Stars this season in just seven games.

The score stayed that way up until the fifth inning where Lookouts catcher Griff Erickson did the same and lofted a solo shot well over the right-field wall to put Chattanooga up by two.

Against Reed, the Stars could only manage one run in the eighth inning as catcher Robinzon Diaz hit a solo homer tucked just inside the left-field foul pole to cut the Stars deficit to one. The former Dodgers first round draft pick gave up just that run on five hits in a season high 8.0 innings pitched to improve to 3-5 on the year.

To ensure Reed the victory, Lookouts righty Yimi Garcia sent down the Stars scoreless in the ninth inning for his 12th save of the season.

Chattanooga scored two insurance runs in the top of the ninth on a RBI double from third baseman Sean Burroughs and an RBI single from outfielder Bobby Coyle against Stars reliever Casey Medlen.

Despite taking the loss to fall to 5-5 on the year, Pena gave up just two runs and three hits in six innings while striking out seven batters. The outing marked the 11th time that Pena has given up two or fewer runs in a start this season.

Aside from Pena, lefty Brian Garman pitched two innings of scoreless relief for Huntsville.

On offense, the Stars were held to eight or less hits for the fifth straight game.

On Saturday, the Stars and Lookouts will play game two of a five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium. Huntsville will send RHP Taylor Jungmann (7-3, 3.78 ERA) to the bump as Chattanooga will counter with RHP Andres Santiago (2-5, 5.19 ERA). First pitch is at 6:43 CT.
