The Brewers again out-hit their opponent, but didn't get much help from the pitching staff. First baseman Juan De Los Santos singles three times and was hit by a pitch. Second baseman Jorge Quiterio continued his hot hitting, going 2 for 5 with a triple and three RBI. Shortstop Daniel Leonardo was 2 for 3 but was lifted for a pinch runner in the 7th inning after he was hit by a pitch. So that will be something to keep an eye on. Left fielder Juan Ortiz was 2 for 5 and scored a pair of runs. Yosmer Leal started for the Brewers but couldn't get out of the first inning, allowing four runs in two-thirds of an inning. He faced just seven batters, allowing three hits and walking two batters. Melvin Tejada relieved him and didn't fare any better, allowing four runs in four innings. He allowed seven hits, walked three and hit two batters.

Final: Montgomery 8 Huntsville 4

 

One night after allowing 13 runs on 19 hits, Stars pitchers were touched up for 8 runs on 13 hits as Montgomery defeated Huntsville 8-4 Tuesday night. Stars starter Andy Moye lasted only 5 innings, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5. It was the most runs Moye had allowed in about a month as he's really been throwing the ball well. Andy threw 76 pitches, 51 for strikes and had a ground out to fly out ratio of 4-6. Moye ended up with a no decision tonight.

 

Santo Manzanillo was brought in to start the 6 and was taken out before he could retire a batter. In an outing he will want to forget, Manzanillo faced 5 batters and allowed 4 runs, 3 earned, on 5 hits including a home run. Manzanillo was saddled with the loss dropping his record to 1-3 and seeing his ERA balloon to 6.93. You have to wonder how long his 40 man spot will be safe.

 

Casey Medlen came on in relief of Manzanillo in the 6th. Medlen gave up a hit and struck out 1. Greg Holle was called on to work the 7th. He retired all 4 hitters he faced as one batter reached on a wild pitch on a strike out. Eric Marzec pitched the 8th and gave up just a hit. Marzec's ERA is now down to 2.13 and he's really becoming a reliable arm out of the pen for the Stars.

The Stars offense was only able to muster 4 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks tonight. The 2 big hits for Huntsville were a 2 out, 2 strike, 2 run single by Robinzon Diaz in the 4th and a 2 out, 2 run home run by Brock Kjeldgaard in the 6th. In the 4th, the Stars loaded the bases with no outs and the heart of the order coming up. Biscuits pitcher Enny Romero was able to get 2 outs without allowing a run and looked like he might Houdini out of it but Robinzon Diaz fought off about 6 pitches before dumping a single into left. Diaz finished 1-4 with those 2 RBI's. Kjeldgaard's home run was his 11th on the season, 2nd best in the Southern League. It was also his second home run in as many nights. Hopefully this is a streak Brock can keep going! Jason Rogers, who entered the game with only 11 walks on the season, drew 2 tonight. Kentrail Davis reached base twice tonight, once with a single and once with a walk, his team leading 36th on the season. Nick Shaw, Adam Weisenburger, and Joey Paciorek had the Stars other hits. Paciorek's hit was a double.

VIERA, Fla. - With runners on second and third and nobody out in the bottom of the ninth, the Brevard County Manatees were unable to pull off a thrilling victory for the second night in a row as they fell 3-1 to the Jupiter Hammerheads on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium.

 

In Brevard County's (32-30) final at-bat, Ben McMahan led off the frame with a single to right and then Yadiel Rivera notched his eighth double of the year to put the tying run in scoring position with no outs. Jupiter (33-30) closer Nick Wittgren was then able to get Lance Roenicke to line out to second for the first out.

 

Wittgren then struck out both Brevard County's leading hitter, Chadwin Stang and the Manatees' hero from Monday night, T.J. Mittelstaedt, to end the game.

 

All of the scoring on the night happened in the first three innings with Jupiter jumping out to a 2-0 advantage in the first inning. A trio of two-out singles that ended with a two-RBI hit from Ryan McIntyre got the Hammerheads on the board off of Brevard County starting pitcher Jacob Barnes (4-2, 3.67).

 

Jupiter added another run against Barnes and the 'Tees in the third after Ross Wilson tripled and then scored on a sacrifice fly. Barnes went five frames and did allow only seven base runners. He yielded five hits and a walk, while striking out two.

 

Brevard County got one run back in the bottom of the third and it started with a leadoff walk from Chadwin Stang. Stang then advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw by Jupiter starting pitcher Justin Nicolino.

 

Three batters later, Stang would come in to score with Mitch Haniger getting the first Brevard County hit off of Nicolino to knock the unearned run in.

 

All zeroes followed that half inning on the scoreboard, with the 'Tees getting a total of five more hits the rest of the way. The trio of Tyler Cravy, Stephen Peterson and Mark Williams combine to hold the Hammerheads scoreless for the final four innings but the damage had already been done.

 

The third game of the series between Brevard County and Jupiter is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium on Wednesday night. David Goforth (5-5, 3.36) will take the mound for the Manatees and opposing him will be Jacob Esch (1-3, 3.46) for the Hammerheads.

Rattlers fall in Beloit

Wisconsin outhits Snappers 14-6, but lose 5-4

BELOIT, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers cracked 14 hits - all singles - on Tuesday night at Pohlman Field. Wisconsin put together a spirited comeback against the Beloit Snappers with four runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally from a 3-0 deficit. But, Beloit broke the Rattlers hearts with two runs in the bottom of the seventh and held on to defeat Wisconsin 5-4.

 

The Timber Rattlers (26-34) had a great scoring opportunity in the top of the second inning. Mike Garza reached on an infield single with one out. Alfredo Rodriguez and Parker Berberet followed with singles to load the bases with one out against Raul Alcantara. But, Alcantara got a strikeout for the second out. Then, Berberet strayed too far from first on a 1-2 pitch to Michael Reed and got picked off first base by catcher Nick Rickles.

 

The Snappers (40-25) struck in the bottom of the second inning. They had two on with none out, but Damien Magnifico retired the next two batters. But, Bostick singled to drive in the first run of the game.

 

Bostick delivered another two out hit in the fourth inning. This one extended the Beloit lead to 3-0. Ryan Delgado walked on four pitches to start the inning. Magnifico got the next two hitters and was ahead of Bostick 0-2 in the count. The 0-2 pitch just missed the strike zone. Bostick lined the next pitch over the wall in left-center for a two-run homer.

 

That was the seventh home run of the season for Bostick and his third off the year against Wisconsin pitchers.

 

Wisconsin collected nine singles in six innings against Alcantara, but could not push anyone across the plate against the Beloit right-hander. Alcantara struck out five through six innings before turning the game over to the Snappers bullpen.

 

That's when the game turned around for Wisconsin.

 

Berberet greeted Brent Powers to the game with a single. Adrian Williams followed with a walk. Reed blooped in a single to left-center to load the bases. Powers uncorked a wild pitch to let Berberet score. Then, he walked Orlando Arcia to reload the bases.

 

Tyrone Taylor lined out to left to drive in Williams for a sacrifice fly to cut Beloit's lead to 3-2.

 

Reed and Arcia pulled a double steal with Victor Roache at the plate and Wisconsin had the tying and lead runs in scoring position. Roache struck out and that set up left-hand hitting Adam Giacalone to face the lefty Powers.

 

Giacalone won the battle of the lefties by grounding a single back through the middle on a 2-0 pitch to drive in Reed and Arcia and give Wisconsin a 4-3 lead.

 

But, the game turned back around to the home team after the stretch as Beloit rallied in the bottom of the seventh to retake the lead. Nick Rickles singled to start the inning and Brett Vertigan doubled with one out to put runners on the corners. Daniel Robertson tied the game with a grounder to short that scored Rickles and moved Vertigan to third base. The Snappers took the lead when Alfredo Rodriguez couldn't handle a grounder off the bat of John Wooten. That error let Vertigan score the go-ahead run.

 

The Rattlers got something going with one out in the top of the eighth inning. Berberet collected his fourth hit of the night and Adrian Williams drew a walk to put the tying and lead runs on base. Reed popped out for the second out of the inning and Arcia stepped into the box with a chance to at least tie the game. But, he never got a chance to take the bat off his shoulder.

 

The first pitch was low and away and Rickles saw that Williams had strayed too far from first. The Snappers catcher fired to first and picked Williams off to end the inning.

 

Ryan Dull worked a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning for his twelfth save of the season.

 

The Timber Rattlers fell to 1-6 against the Snappers this season with the loss on Tuesday night.

 

Game two of the series is Wednesday night at Pohlman Field. Austin Blaski (2-2, 2.03) is the scheduled starter for the Timber Rattlers. Michael Ynoa (1-1, 2.43) is set to start for the Snappers. So stop me if you heard this before... bad defense and untimely hitting led to another loss. Worst of all was 2 baserunners getting picked off 1st base to end rallies in the 2nd and 8th innings. Matt Erickson told he Chris he thought yesterday's effort was the T-Rats best effort of the season... but they weren't able to string 2 quality efforts together in a row. The only way this team has been consistent is with the preventable errors that keep themselves from winning.

 

Unfortunately with all those hits, none were for XBH, and the only inning the Rattlers went down in order was the 9th, which was disappointing after the budding rally in the 8th. Parker Berberet and Adam Giacalone had quite the days at the plate, Parker was 4-4 and Adam 3-4, not too shabby at all. Unfortunately Victor Roache is mired in a horrible slump, only hitting .189 over his last 10 games and his AVE is back down to .211.

 

Damien Magnifico wasn't all that sharp but limited the damage enough, Damien is either really good from a BB standpoint or really bad, he has no middle. Going back to April 15th he's either walked 0 or 1 when he's good and 4 or 5 when he's off, there's literally been nothing in between.

This was the same story as the game last week against Raul Alcantara as thevT-Rats tuned him up with hits but couldn't push any runs across. In his 13 innings against the Rattlers in the last week the T-Rats have scattered 17 hits and 1 walk but have nothing to show for it.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds toppled the visiting Omaha Storm Chasers, 5-2, Tuesday night at Greer Stadium, highlighted by a three-run homer from Blake Lalli and a quality start from starting pitcher Johnny Hellweg (6-4).

 

After Omaha starter Yordano Ventura (0-1) retired the first three Nashville batters using fastballs touching 100 mph, the Sounds adjusted to the hurler's speed and hammered out four consecutive hits to lead-off the second inning.

 

Hunter Morris belted a ground-rule double into left field and moved to third on a single from Josh Prince, 3-for-4. Catcher Blake Lalli cleared the bases to give Nashville a 3-0 lead with a home run to left field. The homer was Lalli's sixth of the season and extends his hitting streak to a season-best seven games.

 

Second baseman Hainley Statia added another run to the Sounds tally with a single into right field that scored Sean Halton, 2-for-3, who legged out a double earlier in the second inning.

 

From the hill, Hellweg delivered his sixth quality start for Nashville, scattering six hits across seven innings of work to pick up his sixth win of the year. The only earned run charged to Hellweg was a home run he surrendered to Irving Falu in his final inning. The outing dropped Hellweg's season ERA from 3.25 to 3.06.

 

The Storm Chasers picked up their first run in the fifth inning on Hellweg's throwing error. In an attempt to pickoff Jarrod Dyson, Hellweg tossed the ball over Morris, which allowed the runner on third to score. The Sounds quickly reclaimed their four-run advantage with an RBI-single from Prince in the home half of the inning.

 

Finishing up Nashville's work from the hill were relievers Kyle Heckathorn, who logged a scoreless eighth inning, and Rob Wooten, who closed out the game with a hitless ninth for his 11th save of the season.

 

Ventura was charged with the loss, his first, giving up five runs on eight hits to Nashville across 4.2 innings. The right-handed pitcher fanned five strikeouts and walked two.

 

The Sounds will look to take the lead in the four-game series against the Omaha Storm Chasers Wednesday at Greer Stadium. Throwing for Nashville in the 7:05 p.m. game will be RHP Jimmy Nelson (0-1, 0.00) opposite Omaha's LHP Justin Marks (1-5, 6.75).

Love what we're seeing from Hellweg, Pena and Nelson at the moment. With Thornburg falling on his face as a starter it's reassuring to know the Brewers still just might have some quality arms.

 

Do either Hellweg or Nelson get called up this season? Hellweg has had four great starts in a row and Nelson looks to be picking up right where he left off in AA.

Can't really speculate on call ups for Nelson or Hellweg until the trade deadline passes. I think both might get a cup of coffee in September at the least and one of them could potentially replace Peralta if he doesn't figure it out. Nelson definitely needs some more starts at AAA; if I had to guess I would say Hellweg would be called up first.

I'd throw Jungman and Bradley into that mix too. Seems like all of them have made pretty big strides so far this season.
