Duplicate posts

Recommended Posts

It's actually been going on forever, but maybe it's gotten worse recently.

I think the server burps, and in some cases people don't see their message and post again (either intentionally or unintentionally). It'd be nice to get to the bottom of this, but I'm not sure exactly where to start.

Work on the search ended almost two weeks ago, so that's not likely to be a factor.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I don't think it's a user issue with a double post, I think it's something server side.

If you edit the first post the 2nd one edits as well, if you delete one, both get deleted.

Well spotted and exactly what was needed to resolve this.

TooLiveBrew, I have fixed the topic you linked to.

If we are linked to these funky topics they can easily be repaired. Ideally links to the individual posts are best, so we can double-check things. To get a direct link to a post, just click the post number on the top right of the post.

This sort of thing does happen and perhaps it occurs more when the board is busy? This board certainly pushes the limits of the server at times. There is a tool provided to repair these topics (Moderators check out the resync topic option in the MCP), therefore it is a known issue and likely one that will not be resolved.

As a one-off, I am going to check and repair all topics on this board as necessary within the next 24 hours. I may have to pick a quieter time to do this though. After then, please do not hesitate to report occurrences of this and any moderator can resolve it in under a minute.

I've never been able to correlate weirdness to whether or not the board is busy, but TooLive first pointed out the strange duplicate issue to me while the search was being worked on. What was really strange was that the duplicate posts were actually on different pages of the topic.

This is what I was curious about. It is only one post, except it is appearing more than once. Appearing on separate pages does make sense.

TooLive ran into trouble with deletions of duplicates in Link Report for Thurs. 5/23 a little after 4 PM CDT (GMT-6) on May 24. There were some deletions in that topic earlier that day that didn't seem to cause issues.

The thread looks better now; it's currently two pages, but it used to run into a third. When I look at the moderator log, I don't see any significant attempts at deletions after TooLive ran into the bizarre issues.

I think the word duplicate can cause confusion; these are actually the same post being rendered twice. This is easy to determine if: the post title, the post number, edit, delete or quote are hovered and the post number noted from the status.

Timing cannot be determined but that date coincides with the database being worked hard.

All posts in this category as well as a few select others have been checked and repaired now, so this issue should not be present. If it is seen again, then it will be fresh and can simply be dealt with by resynchronizing the topic.

Another way for members to alert moderators to funky topics/posts would be to use the report post button http://forum.brewerfan.net/styles/bf_default/imageset/en/icon_post_report.gif on the top right of the post. This has the advantage of including a link.

Thanks for looking into this. I'd bet that the topic I linked to was fixed by whatever you did.

Good point about hovering over the various links to determine the nature of the issue.

And yes, members can always use the report feature.

Thank you!

Sorry I forgot to check back in on this thread, but TC07 & 1992casey summarized things accurately.
