The Tyler Badamo Brewerfan Lovefest Thread

The subject of my "Great Story Trying to Happen" thread was...

Tyler Badamo, of Dowling College.

I've known Tyler since he was two, his dad was one of my best friends - Matt died in March of 2010.

The kid can pitch...92 MPH fastball, curve is his best pitch, throws the change for strikes in all counts, added a slider prior to the 2013 season. He's got one season left at Dowling, here's some stuff you should know...

No, DHonks, because he has one year of college left on a free ride.

I got him in touch with a Seattle scout I know last night, they had a great conversation. Basically, the advice he's getting is, "You should have been drafted, but this happens, just keep doing your work and you'll be fine."

One positive that's come from this already, some scouts who have never seen him will be coming out to watch him this summer, and everyone seems to be pulling for him. As he's given more advice through this process, I'll share it here.

Tyler started the second game of a doubleheader last night, in the rain. Tyler wound up warming up three times, then he broke four bats, all of which went for base hits, and he says he had, "The worst umpire I've ever seen in my life" behind the plate.

After all the stops and starts, he was done after three innings. The opposing coach came and told him that's the worst luck he's likely to ever have on the mound.

Here's Tyler's latest message...

Just threw in relief because my game got rained out yesterday, so I split the game with the starter. 5 innings, 8 Ks, no runs. Throwing hard, but I don't know how hard exactly.

Tyler's mom sent me this summary of his game today...

Tyler held the Presstman Cardinals scoreless for seven innings to help the Southern Maryland Nationals to a 1-0 victory, he allowed six hits, one walk and struck out nine.

Tyler was 92-94 all game long today, and he hit 95 MPH twice.

Any scouts talking to him yet this year? If so would you care to mention whom? I would think as the weather warms and the college season progresses he'll have a bunch of teams looking to take him later in the draft as a sleeper type, the slotting system may unfortunately work against him given he's a senior from a D2 program.

For his sake I hope he doesn't have to wait until the 20s, I'd like him get a decent draft bonus and go in the top 15 rounds simply because of your connection to him, but in the end the real money is in making a career out of the game, regardless of draft stature.

I'm definitely intrigued by him though.

Crew07, there are several teams taking Tyler seriously right now.

For certain, the Mets, Reds, Pirates, and both LA teams - there may be more, but at least those teams.

I spoke to the Yankees today, they're sending someone to watch him.

With the caveat that I realize you can't talk about everything related to this...

TELL US EVERYTHING ABOUT THESE CONVERSATIONS! :)

TooLive, I'm blessed in this regard, I've gotten to know a lot of people in the game in recent years. It wasn't really a plan, but it happened.

A friend of mine is a Major League scout for the Yankees, he's helping me with Tyler. The last time I had talked to my guy, he was at dinner with Pete Vuckovich, who is a scout now, I believe for the White Sox.

I talked to Tyler's mom today, she said there had been scouts from 8 teams there at Tyler's last start, she doesn't know all of them, but his coach had told her there were eight teams there. The Mets guy stayed to talk to Tyler after the game - all of them had registered him at 95 MPH twice.

I went to grade school with Vuke's son. The one memory of Vuke that I have as a kid is that he was a chaperone on one particular class trip to the Milwaukee Public Museum -- he was wearing gator-skin boots, and young-me asked him about said boots. I asked him if he was wearing snakeskin boots... because, you know, I was cool & knew that that was a thing. But he told me that, no, he was wearing gator boots.

At the time, I felt bummed because the boots weren't made of that cool thing that I'd heard about before. In hindsight, I learned about a professional athlete's gayt-uh boots in the least flamboyant manner possible... he just wasn't bragging at all. And that memory is awesome.

Tyler threw a complete game tonight, 1 run, earned, 3 walks, 12 Ks.

The Reds and Mets were there again, they're definitely investing the most time in him, the Reds' guy told Tyler's mom that Tyler was throwing 93 MPH in the first inning, that's the only time she talked to either of them tonight.
