VIDEO FROM FRIDAY: Red-hot Huntsville catcher Adam Weisenburger (stats) smokes a 9th inning HR which closed the score to 5-4 Montgomery at the time.

 

Not sure if the frustrated emotional guy just beyond the fence doesn't realize his team is still ahead, or that he missed a chance at the ball. But he is comical.

Here is tonight’s pregame interview with Sounds right-hander Jimmy Nelson, who gave up two unearned runs and fanned seven over five innings last night in Memphis in a tough-luck loss in his Sounds and Triple-A debut. Nelson discusses his outing last night, his season to this point at Double-A, how his time on the DL last year with shoulder fatigue affected his preparation for this season, the development of his power slider and change-up and his time at University of Alabama (where he opposed his current teammate Hunter Morris, an Auburn alum).

DSL Brewers Box Score

 

The Brewers out-hit the Orioles 14-11 but fell 12-9. Gregory Munoz was on base four times, with three singles and a hit by pitch. He also stole two bases. Jorge Quiterio was 3 for 5 with a double and scored two runs. Yunior Santana also went 3 for 5 with two RBI and two runs scored. He had a stolen base, as did Daniel Leonardo who reached safely three times, singling twice and drawing a walk. All five Brewers pitchers were scored upon. Starter Gian Rizzo gave up five earned runs on six hits in four innings.

Final: Montgomery 2 Huntsville 0

 

Montgomery scored twice without the benefit of a hit and the Biscuits pitchers made those runs stand up in defeating the Huntsville Stars 2-0 Saturday Night. Huntsville got another quality start from Ariel Pena tonight, but it wasn't enough. Pena (5-4, 3.00) went 6 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and 4 walks while striking out 5. The odd thing about both runs allowed was both scored on wild pitches. Pena's wild pitch in the 1st and Dan Meadows's in the 7th. Pena threw 91 pitches over is 6 1/3 innings, 51 for strikes. His ground out to fly out ratio was 3-4. Pena kept Huntsville in the game when he didn't have his best stuff. Unfortunately, the bats were silenced tonight.

 

Dan Meadows was brought in to try and get out of a jam in the 7th. Meadows, learning to be a sidearmer, struggled with control tonight. He walked a batter, hit another, and uncorked 2 wild pitches. It's a learning process for Dan, and on most nights, he's been good. Even tonight, with his struggles, he was able to bear down and get out of the inning without further damage. Casey Medlen came on to work the 8th and pitched a scoreless frame, giving up a hit and walk while striking out 1.

 

Huntsville Box Score

 

Huntsville was shut out for the 7th time this season, being held to only 4 hits. Of those 4 hits, 3 were for extra bases, so the Stars had their chances, but did not come through with the timely hits tonight. Offensively, they were led by their outfield. Right fielder Kentrail Davis. Davis went 2-4 with a double and triple. Kentrail has now pushed his batting average up to .282. Left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard also had a double tonight, going 1-3. Center fielder Rene Tosoni had the other hit, a 4th inning single. Mike Walker and Nick Shaw each drew a walk tonight. By going 0-3, Adam Weisenburger saw his 7 game hitting streak snapped.

 

Team RISP: 0-for-7.

Team LOB: 5.

Wisconsin drops fifth straight

Rattlers put themselves in 4-0 hole with three errors in the first inning

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Clinton LumberKings sent the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to their fifth straight loss with a 10-5 decision at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Saturday Night. The LumberKings slugged 15 hits, including seven for extra bases, and pounced on every Wisconsin miscue to build an early lead on the way to victory.

 

The game did not start well for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (24-35). Jabari Henry doubled on the second pitch of the game. Adam Giacalone ranged far to his right to attempt to flag down Ketel Marte's grounder to the right side of the infield. Chris McFarland, Wisconsin's second baseman, fielded the ball easily. But, his throw was behind Jorge Lopez, the pitcher racing to cover first base. Henry scored and Marte wound up at second base. Lopez walked the next batter on four pitches.

 

Taylor Ard was next and he sent a grounder to Mike Garza near the bag at third. Garza touched third for the force and threw to first for the double play. But, Giacalone missed the ball at first and there were runners at the corners with one out.

 

Lopez got Guillermo Pimentel, the next Clinton hitter, to hit a sharp grounder to short for another potential double play. But, this ball went through the legs of Orlando Arcia to let a run score and the inning to continue.

 

Tyler Marlette singled to right to drive in Ard and send Pimentel to third base. Janelfry Zorilla capped the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice fly to center and Clinton led 4-0 before the Rattlers got to hit.

 

Clinton (30-31) added to their lead in the top of the second. Jordy Lara doubled to start the inning. Henry doubled with one out to send Lara home for a 5-0 lead.

 

Giacalone drew a walk in the bottom of the fourth. Mike Garza followed with a line drive home run to left and the Rattlers were down 5-2.

 

Lopez went six innings and only two of the five runs against him were earned. He didn't give up any runs after the second inning, allowed seven hits, walked two, and struck out four. He was charged with the loss.

 

Clinton pulled away in the seventh and eighth innings against reliever Ryan Gibbard. The LumberKings had two outs and none on in the seventh. Ketel Marte bunted for a hit and stole second. Dario Pizzano drew a walk, his third of the game. Ard and Pimentel had back-to-back RBI singles to drive in Marte and Pizzano for a 7-2 lead. In the eighth, Zorilla doubled and Lara followed with an RBI double. Marte had a sacrifice fly later in the inning to knock in Lara for a 9-5 lead.

 

Wisconsin scrapped for three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning against Grady Wood. They loaded the bases on singles by Giacalone and Garza and a walk to Parker Berberet. Chris McFarland grounded into a force play at second to score Giacalone. There were still two outs and runners on the corners when Tim Lopes dropped a popup off the bat off Arcia. That let Garza score and McFarland get to third. Wood would commit a balk to send McFarland home to make the score 9-5.

 

But, Clinton tacked on one more run in the top of the ninth. Ard doubled to start the inning. Zorilla singled with two outs to drive in Ard to account for the final run of the game.

 

Giacalone went 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to nine games. Tyrone Taylor tripled in the game and moved his hitting streak to seven games. Garza also has a seven game hitting streak for the Timber Rattlers.

 

Game two of the series is Sunday afternoon. Eric Semmelhack (1-2, 3.48) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Charles Kaalekahi is scheduled to make his Midwest League debut for the LumberKings as their starting pitcher. Game time is 1:05pm.

 

The first 1,000 fans to attend the game will receive a rally towel from Kagen Allergy Clinic.

 

Sunday is also a Brewers Sunday with 107.5, The Fan. Timber Rattlers players will wear Brewers-themed jerseys during the game. There is also catch on the field for fans before the game and a postgame autograph session with the players.

There are only so many ways to say that this team continually beats itself and obviously this game was ugly from the start. It's been pretty much the same recurring themes all season for this T-Rats squad, I'm still counting on significant improvement in play as we near the 2nd half.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds belted their way to 7-1 victory over the Memphis Redbirds Saturday night at AutoZone Park, highlighted by Hunter Morris' two-homer game.

 

Morris saved the fireworks for his final two at-bats, tagging home runs off Memphis reliever Nick Additon in the seventh and eighth innings. His first jack opened the seventh and ended his 0-for-14 slump. Then with two outs in the eighth, Morris slapped a three-run homer to the right-field corner to increase Nashville's lead to six runs.

 

The multi-home run effort is Morris' third of the season and gives him 12 dingers on the year.

 

Starting pitcher Mike Fiers (1-1), making his first Sounds appearance since May 3, tossed five scoreless frames, fanning four Redbirds and walking one en route to his first victory in four starts for Nashville.

 

The Sounds scored in each of the first three innings, jumping on Memphis starting pitcher Mitchell Boggs (0-1) for a 3-0 lead.

 

Two Redbirds errors, one each from Ryan Jackson and Boggs, in the first inning allowed Sounds second baseman Hainley Statia, 1-for-3, around the base paths to score after reaching base on a single into right-center field to start the game.

 

In the second, Khris Davis was hit by one of Boggs' pitches with the bases loaded to score Anderson De La Rosa. The Sounds recorded no hits in the inning, but loaded the bases by drawing two walks and beating out a fielder's choice.

 

Finally, in the third with two outs, Ozzie Chavez lifted a double over Oscar Taveras in centerfield to score De La Rosa, who reached on a hit by pitch.

 

Nashville accumulated 10 hits on the night and drew a season-high nine walks. Four Sounds had multiple-hit nights, while Sean Halton and Statia each drew three walks. The Sounds left a season-high 14 runners on base.

 

The Redbirds picked up their lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning, when catcher Rob Johnson touched Nashville reliever Johnnie Lowe for a solo home run into the Memphis bullpen.

 

Lowe logged two innings for Nashville, limiting Memphis to one run on three hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Michael Olmsted pitched a spotless eighth with one strikeout before Tim Dillard finished the game, allowing one hit.

 

The Sounds will look to win the four-game series against the Redbirds Sunday at AutoZone Park. Throwing for Nashville in the 1:35 p.m. game will be LHP Chris Narveson (0-1, 13.50) opposite Memphis' RHP Scott McGregor (1-2, 7.31). Baseball returns to Greer Stadium on Monday, June 10, when the Sounds host the Omaha Storm Chasers to a four-game series.

Nice audio with Nelson. Nice to hear..... 'fast ball is the main pitch, I go with the sinker more, now'... 'my change is not a show them pitch, but a 'I get outs' pitch'.... 'my slider has always been my go to pitch'.

 

So, at least Jimmy talks the talk - great to hear a guy explaining his confidence in all his pitches. I sure hope he gets to throw some inning in Milwaukee this year.

Stars Offense Silent in 2-0 Loss

Montgomery, AL – A night after losing on a walkoff single in the ninth inning, the Huntsville Stars were shut out by the Montgomery Biscuits by a score of 2-0 on Saturday night at Riverwalk Stadium.

 

While the Stars got another strong outing from starting pitcher Ariel Pena (6 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 5 K, 4 BB), he put himself in position to be tabbed for the loss early in the first inning. After a leadoff double from outfielder Kevin Kiermaier and a bunt single by shortstop Shawn O’Malley put runners at the corners with nobody out, a wild pitch from Pena later in the inning allowed Kiermaier to score to put Montgomery up 1-0.

 

With the Biscuits lead still at 1-0 in the seventh inning, a similar situation happened that led to the second and final run of the game for Montgomery. After Pena got himself into a jam with two one-out walks, he was taken out of the game in favor of lefty Dan Meadows. Following a walk from Meadows, another wild pitch allowed Kyeong Kong to score from third to put the Biscuits up by two.

 

Unfortunately for the Stars, that was all the run support Biscuits starting pitcher Jacob Thompson needed. The 23-year-old righty pitched a season-high seven innings without giving up a run on just three hits to improve to 6-5 on the season. The win for Thompson was salvaged after lefty C.J Riefenhauser came into the game and shut down the Stars through the final two innings to notch his team-leading 8th save of the season.

 

With the loss, Pena fell to 5-4 on the season. The shutout marked the fifth time this season that the Stars offense has been shut out. In 2012, the Stars were shut out nine times total.

 

On offense, the Stars only managed four hits, including a double and a triple from outfielder Kentrail Davis. Outfielders Brock Kjeldgaard and Rene Tosoni had the only other hits for Huntsville.

 

Now eight games under .500 with eight games remaining in the first half of the Southern League season, the Stars will not have a winning record for their fourth consecutive half dating back to 2011.

 

On Sunday, the Stars will play game three of a five-game series at Riverwalk Stadium against the Montgomery Biscuits. Huntsville will send RHP Taylor Jungmann (6-5, 4.22 ERA) to the bump as Montgomery will counter with RHP Merrill Kelly (5-5, 3.62 ERA). First pitch is at 6:05 CT.
