MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Despite striking out seven batters and allowing no earned runs in his Triple-A debut Friday night, Jimmy Nelson (0-1) took the tough-luck loss Friday night at AutoZone Park as the Nashville Sounds fell to the Memphis Redbirds, 2-1.

Nelson, promoted to the Sounds two days prior, allowed Memphis just three hits and three walks across five innings of work. The right-hander threw 87 pitches and fired 55 for strikes. But it was the Redbirds' two unearned runs in the second inning that landed Nelson with his debut loss.

In the second, Nashville third baseman Stephen Parker committed a two-base fielding error to start the frame, as the ball rolled up his arm and into foul territory.

Memphis outfielder Justin Christian hit a single into right field that scored the lead runner, then with one out and the bases loaded, Adron Chambers grounded to the pitcher to score the runner from third to make it 2-0.

The Sounds scored their only run in the top of the fifth inning when Hainley Statia, two-for-five, hit a single up the middle to drive in Josh Prince from second. Prince was aboard via a double he crushed off the top of the 15-foot left-field wall.

Prince's run went against Redbirds starter Carlos Martinez, who had not allowed a run for Memphis through his first 11 1/3 innings. Martinez only pitched 4 1/3 innings, not enough to qualify for the win, which instead went to Sam Freeman. Victor Marte notched his 11th save.

The Sounds had two bases-loaded opportunities in the contest, loading them with two outs in the second inning, when Nelson reached base on balls in his first Triple-A at-bat. Prince lined it to first baseman Brock Peterson to end the chance. Nashville loaded them again in the fifth, but Blake Lalli, two-for-four with two doubles, struck out to end the inning.

Reliever Jesus Sanchez picked up 1 1/3 scoreless innings, before Travis Webb and Clay Hensley each picked up a third of an inning to end the seventh. Kyle Heckathorn fanned one Redbird in a scoreless eighth inning.

Caleb Gindl kept the lead at one run in the sixth inning with a great throw to the plate from right field to stop Jamie Romak from scoring and record the Sounds second double-play.

Offensively, the Sounds out-hit the Redbirds 10-7, with Gindl leading the way with three hits.

The Sounds will look to retake the series lead against the Redbirds Saturday night at AutoZone Park. Throwing for Nashville in the 6:05 p.m. game will be RHP Mike Fiers (0-1, 1.59) opposite Memphis' RHP Mitchell Boggs (0-0, 3.68). Baseball returns to Greer Stadium on Monday, June 10, when the Sounds host the Omaha Storm Chasers to a four-game series.

Final: Brevard County 7, Daytona (Cubs) 6

'Tees edge Cubs for another one-run win

Brevard holds off Daytona 7-6, now 17-5 in one-run games in 2013

By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Tommy Toledo entered in the bottom of the ninth and helped the Brevard County Manatees escape a bases-loaded, one-out jam, en route his eighth save of the season and a 7-6 win over the Daytona Cubs at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Friday night.

A run in both the eighth and ninth innings for the Cubs, both charged to Kevin Shackelford, tightened up what had been a 7-4 lead after six for Brevard County (31-27), as Toledo was called upon to get the 'Tees out of the jam.

Brevard County took advantage of big nights from two players in particular, with Greg Hopkins and Nick Ramirez showcasing their offensive talents.

Hopkins went 3-for-5, including a pair of doubles, and scored three times with another one knocked in. Ramirez notched three of his four runs batted in with a single swing of the bat in the fifth, launching a home run to right field that scored Hopkins and Mitch Haniger.

The homer was the 13th of the year for Ramirez and it gave the Manatees what was at the time a 6-2 advantage before Daytona (29-28) closed the gap with two runs in the bottom of the same inning.

After taking a leadoff hit by pitch, Zeke DeVoss stole both second and third, to set himself up to score on Wes Darvill's single. Darvill scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Tim Saunders, as it was now just a 6-4 lead for the Manatees.

A two-out, seventh inning double by Yadiel Rivera was followed by a Chadwin Stang single that brought Rivera home, put Brevard back up by three runs.

Hopkins had opened the game up with a double in the first inning and then scored on a Ramirez single to give Brevard the early 1-0 lead. That was extended to 3-0 in the top of the third as T.J. Mittelstaedt drew a one-out walk. That was then followed by back-to-back RBI doubles from Hopkins and Mitch Haniger.

David Goforth (5-5, 3.36) earned the win, despite lasting only five innings and surrendering four runs. Two of the runs were scored by batters who were put on by a walk and a hit by pitch, respectively.

Goforth only gave up three of the Cubs' 11 hits on the night. He walked two and of his four strikeouts, three of them came when struck out the side in the first inning.

The Manatees will return home to Space Coast Stadium for the second game of their series with the Cubs on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. Cody Scarpetta (0-1, 8.10) will toe the rubber for Brevard County, while Daytona will counter with southpaw Kyler Burke (1-0, 2.40).

Daytona News-Journal

With the bases loaded, Greg Hopkins hit a hard grounder to third base, where Daytona's Ben Carhart made the putout and threw to second base. Shortstop Javier Baez covered the bag and made the turn, but Hopkins just beat the throw to first.

After a walk to Mitch Haniger, Nick Ramirez belted a 3-1 fastball from Matt Loosen (0-1) over the fence in right-center fie

“Luckily (Hopkins) beat it out, and that extended the inning for us,” said Ramirez, an FSL North All-Star selection who now has 13 home runs. “I got in a 3-1 count and just told myself to stay smooth, not muscle up on it and put a good swing on it.”

Biscuts Walkoff Against Stars

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

In a game where the Huntsville Stars led by three, trailed by two and then tied the game up when they were down to their final strike, the Montgomery Biscuits walked-off in the bottom of the ninth inning to win game one of a five-game series by a score of 6-5 on Friday night at Riverwalk Stadium.

On Friday, the Stars got off to a quick start against Biscuits starting pitcher Jake Floethe. To begin a two-out rally, designated hitter Mike Walker hit a solo homer well over the right-field wall to put the Stars on the board (audio). Then, after catcher Adam Weisenburger singled and third baseman Joey Paciorek drew a walk, second baseman Nick Shaw drove them both in with a two-run double to make the score 3-0.

Unfortunately for Huntsville, that initial lead would be squandered. With starting pitcher Drew Gagnon making his Double-A debut, Biscuits catcher Mayo Acosta came though with a two-run single in the second inning to cut the Stars lead to one.

Following a 1-2-3 inning for Gagnon in the third, Montgomery was able to rough up the 22-year-old righty in the fourth inning. After the first two batters of the inning reached base, an RBI single from Riccio Torrez tied the game up at three while putting runners at first and third. During the next at-bat, a wild pitch from Gagnon allowed designated hitter Kyeong Kang to score to give the Biscuits their first lead of the ballgame. Later in the inning, another RBI single from Acosta made the score 5-3 and ended Gagnon's outing.

Overall, the Brewers 12th ranked prospect (per MLB.com) gave up five runs on six hits in four innings while striking out three and earning a no-decision in his Stars debut.

Gagnon was saved from being tabbed with the loss in the ninth inning as Montgomery brought in righty Austin Hubbard to close out the game. To start the inning, Weisenburger lead off things with a solo homer to cut the Biscuits lead to one. Following another walk from Paciorek and a single from Shaw that put runners on first and second with two outs, outfielder Kentrail Davis ripped an RBI single to left field (when down to his final strike) to score Pacoriek and tie up the game (audio).

However, the tie would be short-lived. Stars reliever Frankie De La Cruz (L, 0-1) gave up back-to-back singles to Kang and Torrez to put runners on first an third with nobody out. After Torrez took second on a defensive indifference, a bloop single by second basemen Robby Price allowed Kang to score the game-winning run.

The walkoff win was the second the Stars have had against them this season.

On Saturday, the Stars will play game two of a five-game series at Riverwalk Stadium against the Montgomery Biscuits. Huntsville will send RHP Ariel Pena (5-3, 3.04 ERA) to the bump as Montgomery will counter with RHP Jacob Thompson (5-5, 5.25 ERA). First pitch is at 6:35 CT.
