Beloit pulls away for 7-1 win over Wisconsin

Snappers scored six unearned runs with two outs in the eighth

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Beloit Snappers broke up a tight game against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers with six unearned runs after there were two outs in the top of the eighth inning. Beloit beat the Rattlers 7-1 on Thursday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

Both teams has chances early.

Wisconsin (24-31) had runners at first and third with no outs after singles by Michael Reed and Orlando Arcia. But, a caught stealing, a strikeout, and a grounder to third ended the inning with no runs for the Rattlers.

The Snappers (34-25) had Daniel Robertson at second base with two outs in the fourth. Matt Olson sent a grounder up the middle and Arcia, the Rattlers shortstop, ranged over and cut the ball off in short center. Arcia saw that he had no play at first. He whirled and threw to the plate as Robertson - thinking the throw would go to first - headed for home. The throw was on target and Robertson was out by a wide margin to keep the game scoreless.

Beloit took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning. John Wooten walked to start the inning. Ryan Matthews doubled into the left field corner to send Wooten home with the first run of the game.

Wisconsin would get back-to-back one out singles from Tyrone Taylor and Victor Roache to put runners at first and second in the bottom of the sixth inning. Alcantara got out of the jam with a flyout to left and a grounder to second.

Damien Magnifico, the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers, allowed one run on six hits and left the game with the team trailing 1-0 after five innings. Reliever Leonard Lorenzo retired the first six batters he faced in the game. Then, the teams went to the eighth inning.

Lorenzo issued a leadoff walk to Roberts. But, Roberts was still at first with two outs. He would steal second base with Bruce Maxwell at the plate. Then, Maxwell sent a grounder to short. The ball was booted by Arcia for an error to keep the inning alive.

Renato Nunez singled to center on the next pitch to drive in Roberts for a 2-0 lead. Matt Olson was next and he doubled to send in two more runs for a 4-0 lead. John Wooten's grounder to third was missed for an error on Mike Garza and Olson scored on the play for a 5-0 lead.

A single and a walk loaded the bases for Beloit and brought Roberts back to the plate. He singled to drive in two more runs and the Snappers were comfortably in front 7-0 after those six two-out runs in the eighth.

Alcantara pitched seven shutout innings to earn his seventh win of the season. He walked one and struck out seven.

The Rattlers got on the board in the bottom of the eighth. Arcia walked and Roache singled with one out. Max Walla drove in Arcia with a single to make the score 7-1, but the Rattlers would get no closer to the Snappers.

Wisconsin hosts the Snappers in the final game of their three game series on Friday night. Milwaukee Brewers reliever Jim Henderson is scheduled to make a rehabilitation assignment for the Timber Rattlers and Mike Strong (0-1, 3.38) is will also pitch for the Timber Rattlers. Michael Ynoa (0-1, 2.52) is set to start for Beloit. Game time is 7:05pm.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Seeing 2 of the A's best pitching prospects back to back is a rough assignment but the young Rattlers had their chances against Alcantara.

Orlando Arcia's error that extended the 8th was a simple fundamental, he looked up to check the runner as he was fielding the ball, *sigh*. Matt Garza's error which also extended the inning was just flat out whiffed.

I need to plug Timber Rattlers Field Pass which airs on Time Warner Sports 32, the latest installment with the WI OF prospects was fantastic. I had accidentally cleared my DVR (long story) so I've been trying to catch up Field Pass for awhile. Please give it a watch if you are a Time Warner subscriber.

Wisconsin Recap

Orlando looked slow running into that out, but then Beloit made a ton of outs on the bases. The IF must be have soggy even though it didn't look it, the OFs did have some noticeable struggles with the wet field though.

Wisconsin Bottom of the 1st

  • Michael Reed singles on a line drive to right fielder John Wooten.
Orlando Arcia singles on a line drive to center fielder Brett Vertigan. Michael Reed to 3rd.
With Tyrone Taylor batting, Orlando Arcia caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Ryan Delgado to second baseman Sam Roberts.
Tyrone Taylor called out on strikes.
Victor Roache grounds out, third baseman Renato Nunez to first baseman Matt Olson.

Just 10 hits allowed for Hellweg over his last 20 IP (3 starts). He might not be piling up the Ks, but AAA hitters just aren't squaring up his pitches.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Right-hander Johnny Hellweg turned in another outstanding start, hurling seven scoreless frames, to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 2-1 victory over the Memphis Redbirds on Thursday evening at AutoZone Park.

Hellweg (5-4) scattered three hits over his seven scoreless innings to pick up his fourth win in the last five starts. He walked three batters and struck out three during his 93-pitch effort, his third straight quality start.

The Sounds scored first in the low-scoring affair on Blake Lalli's two-out RBI single in the top of the fourth inning. Hainley Statia (2-for-2), who drew an inning-opening walk from Memphis starter Richard Castillo (0-2), scored on the knock to break a scoreless tie.

Nashville doubled the lead in the eighth with a run off Redbirds reliever Marc Rzepcynski. Sean Halton led off with a single and went station to station on a Blake Davis sacrifice and Statia single before scoring on Caleb Gindl's RBI single to center.

Memphis got a run back in the home half of the eighth against Michael Olmsted. Adron Chambers drew a one-out walk and later scored on a two-out RBI double off the bat of Ryan Jackson. Olmsted left Jackson stranded at second by popping up Brock Peterson to end the inning.

Rob Wooten closed out the victory with a scoreless ninth. The right-hander worked around a leadoff Greg Garcia doubled, retiring the next three batters to nail down his ninth save of the year.

The teams continue the series with another 7:05 p.m. meeting on Friday. Right-hander Jimmy Nelson will make his Triple-A debut with a start for the Sounds. Memphis will counter with right-hander Scott McGregor (1-2, 7.31).

Statia: 2-2, 2 BB

Gindl: 2-4, RBI

Khris Davis: 0-3, BB

Lalli: 1-4, RBI

This was one of Hellweg's most efficient starts, in terms of total pitches. While he didn't strike out many, he induced a ton of groundballs. In fact, only three balls in play against him tonight got off the ground.

Hellweg with another really nice start. Hellweg, Pena, and Nelson all look like they have some potential as #2/3 starters in MLB. I hope at least 2 of them work out

Jungmann's been really good too of late. The Brewers seem to have the makings of a young starting staff over the next couple seasons and that's before any deals.

The real question will be whether they keep them all or trade them to get established guys.

Stars, Barons Split Series-Ending Doubleheader

Alex Cohen, Huntsville Stars

To finish off their five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium, the Huntsville Stars split a doubleheader with the Birmingham Barons, losing game one 7-4 and winning game two 2-0 on Thursday night.

Game one got off to a rough start for the Stars, as they fell behind from the beginning. Huntsville starting pitcher Arcenio Leon (L, 1-4) gave up a leadoff single to Barons shortstop Marcus Semien and then walked the next four consecutive batters (two with the bases-loaded) before being chased from the game without recording an out.

In replacing Leon, Stars reliever Mark Williams walked in two more runs with the bases loaded to make the score 4-0 after just one hit from the Barons offense.

Birmingham got their other runs on a solo homer from catcher Michael Blanke in the third inning and sacrifice flies from second baseman Tyler Saladino and outfielder Michael Earley.

Taking the win for Birmingham was starting pitcher Erik Johnson, who improved to 6-2 on the year after giving up four runs in seven innings for his second complete game of the season.

On offense, the Stars got a solo homer from outfielder Rene Tosoni in the second inning and a three-run homer by third basemen Mike Walker in the fourth inning off of Johnson.

In game two, Huntsville was able to split the doubleheader solely because of a dominating performance by starting pitcher Andy Moye.

En route to improving his record to 3-6 on the season, Moye pitched the first complete game shutout for the Stars since RHP Evan Anundsen (June 3rd, 2012). In seven shutout innings, Moye gave up just five hits and struck out four while walking just two. Over his last four appearances (three starts, one relief), Moye has just given up three runs in 22.0 innings pitched.

The Stars got all the run support they needed in the fourth inning against Barons reliever Salvador Sanchez (L, 1-3). After outfielder Brock Kjeldgaard was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Walker reached base on a fielders choice, an infield single from catcher Adam Weisenburger put runners at first and second with one out.

One batter later, a double by second basemen Shea Vucinich plated both Walker and Weisenburger for the only runs on the game for both teams.

The doubleheader split marked the Stars second straight series loss against the Barons this season. Huntsville is now 4-6 this year against the Southern League North leaders.

On Friday, the Stars will hit the road to start a five-game series at Riverwalk Stadium against the Montgomery Biscuits. Huntsville will likely send RHP Drew Gagnon (Double-A debut) to the bump as Montgomery will counter with a starter that is to be determined. First pitch is at 7:05 CT.
