GIVIN’ ‘EM HELLWEG: Right-hander Johnny Hellweg makes his 12th start of the year for the Sounds this evening. The fireballer has won three of his last four outings and departed the lone no-decision in line for a victory before a blown save by the bullpen. Opponents are hitting just .198 against Hellweg this season, the 3rd-lowest mark among PCL starting pitchers. The right-hander has been especially tough on right-handed hitters, holding them to a a .130 average (13-for-100), including a current 0-for-27 stretch.

BA is going to be swamped by draft coverage & analysis in the immediate future so the Hot Sheet comes out a day early. Also, no chat so no additional nuggets of wisdom for us.

Prospect Hot Sheet (June 6): Xander Bogaert’s Big Bat Leads The List

No. 4 Gerrit Cole, rhp, Pirates

Team: Triple-A Indianapolis (International)

Age: 22Why He’s Here: 2-0, 0.00, 2 GS, 14 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 SO

The Scoop: Yes, the 2011 No. 1 overall pick’s been beaten to the majors by other 2011 and ’12 draftees—four days after Cole gave up eight runs in a Triple-A start, 2012 No. 4 pick Kevin Gausman made his big league debut for the Orioles. Don’t worry about Cole, however. He’ll be there soon enough. He’s bounced back from that disastrous May 19 outing by allowing just two earned run in his last 20 innings, including this week’s pair of matching seven shutout inning performances.

No. 7 Tony Cingrani, lhp, Reds

Team: Triple-A Louisville (International)

Age: 23Why He’s Here: 0-0, 3.86, 7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 9 SO

The Scoop: If not for the timing of his start, Cingrani would likely be back in Cincinnati right now. When Johnny Cueto took a trip to the disabled list, Cingrani was the logical replacement, but because Cingrani had started on Monday, he’ll have to wait until Cueto’s next turn in the rotation to likely make his big league return. He still needs to use his secondary stuff more, and he can hit his pitch count limit earlier than the Reds would like at times, but Cingrani has already shown he can get big league hitters out, which is a nice luxury for the Reds to have in a sixth starter.

No. 12 Javier Baez, ss, Cubs

Team: high Class A Daytona (Florida State)

Age: 20Why He’s Here: .421/.542/.789 (8-for-19), 1 HR, 4 2B, 7 RBIs, 6 R, 1 BB, 4 SO

The Scoop: Baez’s hot spell actually stretches back two weeks. He’s hitting .339 (19-for-56) in his last 14 games with 10 extra-base hits, 13 RBIs and 14 runs scored. He’s been hit by five pitches in that stretch, but probably not too many times in three-ball counts, seeing as he drew two walks against 12 strikeouts.

The Stetson Allie love is becoming as tiresome as the Oscar Taveras love from last year. Taveras has quietly put up an .849 OPS as a 21 year old in AAA, that doesn't suck.

Thursday's doubleheader in Fort Myers cancelled

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Due to the inclement weather stemming from Tropical Storm Andrea, the scheduled doubleheader on Thursday, June 6 between the Brevard County Manatees and the Fort Myers Miracle at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers has been cancelled.

Since the Manatees and the Miracle do not play each other again in the first half of the season, the two games will not be made up.

Brevard County's next game is scheduled for Friday, June 7 at 7:05 PM (6:05 Central) against the Daytona Cubs at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach.

The Manatees will then return home to Space Coast Stadium on Saturday, June 8 to take on the Cubs at 6:35 PM (5:35 Central).

I admit that I'm fond of the Reds organization for some reason that I unable to really put a finger on. It probably goes back to the Nasty Boys, they appealled to me even though I wasn't much of an NL fan at the time. No DH? Hogwash...

With that being said, I don't get the lack of affection around the prospect community for Tony Cingrani. He runs his FB into the mid 90s, spots it wherever he wants, he has a plus change, an improving slider, and who doesn't love a LHP? I would happily insert him into Milwuakee's rotation tonight, and then extend him tomorrow.

4-0 after top of 1st; Stars pitchers tossing combined one-hitter, though --

Pitching Change: Mark Williams replaces Arcenio Leon.

Jared Mitchell walks. Dan Black scores. Andy Wilkins to 3rd. Michael Earley to 2nd.

Tyler Saladino called out on strikes.

Mike Blanke walks. Andy Wilkins scores. Michael Earley to 3rd. Jared Mitchell to 2nd.

Cody Puckett pops out to second baseman Nick Shaw on the infield fly rule.

Williams allows just two inherited runners to score, actually a serviceable job given the situation, just much more painful with walks rather than hits...

Tyrone Taylor just popped out in foul territory behind 3B, the play by Renato Nunez was as good as I've seen an IF make this year. I wonder if it will end up in the highlights even though it was made the by opposing team.

Still 0-0 going to the 4th.

And now Arcia makes a great play picking a ball deflected by Magnifico all the way behind 2B on the edge of the OF grass, wheeling and firing home to get the runner by plenty to end the Snappers' 4th.

edit. ... and John Maino drives me nuts, that is all.

Final: Birmingham 7 Huntsville 4 (Game 1)

A nightmare 1st inning put the Stars in a hole they could not get out of as they fell 7-4 to the Barons in game 1 of Thursdays double header. Stars starter Arcenio Leon (1-4) faced 5 Barons and didn't record an out before being lifted from the game. He was charged with 4 runs on 1 hit and 4 walks. Leon only threw 4 pitches for strikes in 20 attempts. Mark Williams was brought in to relieve Leon. Williams walked 2 of the first 3 batters he faced. Together, Leon and Williams walked 6 in the first inning including 5 in a row. All 4 runs scored on bases loaded walks. Williams settled down and ended up pitching 3 innings, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. Williams allowed a solo home run in the 3rd.

Right hander Brooks Hall made his AA debut in game 1. Hall pitched 2 innings allowing 1 run on 1 hit and 3 walks while striking out 1. The walks came in his 1st inning of work, so it could have been a case of nerves, but he had a real nice 2nd inning on the mound tonight. Thunder Dan Meadows worked 2 strong innings of relief tonight. Meadows was the only Stars pitcher not to allow a run tonight. Over his 2 innings, Dan walked 1 and struck out 2. He did not allow a hit.

Huntsville Box Score

All 4 of the Stars runs in game 1 scored via the long ball. Centerfielder Rene Tosoni hit a solo home run, his 6th on the season, in the 2nd and third baseman Mike Walker hit 5th on the year, a 3 run homer in the 4th. The Stars were limited to 5 hits. Besides Tosoni and Walker, Nick Shaw, Brock Kjeldgaard, and Robinzon Diaz all had singles. Tosoni drew a walk for the Stars only other baserunner.

Huntsville Play By Play

That Birmingham 1st inning is just too much to show, so here is Walker's 3 run home run instead.

Huntsville Bottom of the 4th

Kentrail Davis flies out to left fielder Michael Earley.

Jason Rogers flies out to right fielder Keenyn Walker.

Rene Tosoni walks.

Brock Kjeldgaard singles on a ground ball to center fielder Jared Mitchell. Rene Tosoni to 3rd.

Mike Walker homers (5) on a line drive to right field. Rene Tosoni scores. Brock Kjeldgaard scores.

Robinzon Diaz grounds out, third baseman Cody Puckett to first baseman Andy Wilkins.

Final: Huntsville 2 Birmingham 0 (Game 2)

After Stars pitchers allowed 7 runs on only 4 hits but 11 walks in game 1, Andy Moye shut out the Barons on 5 hits and 2 walks in game 2 to give Huntsville a split of the double header. Moye (3-6, 4.10) went all 7 innings, striking out 4. Of the 93 pitches he threw, 59 were for strikes. Moye's last 3 starts have all been quality starts. Andy had a 9-4 ground out to fly out ratio tonight.

Huntsville Box Score

Huntsville was limited to 4 hits but were able to have enough offense to produce a win. Second baseman Shea Vucinich had the big hit tonight, a 2 run double in the 4th that drove in the only runs the Stars would need tonight. Catcher Adam Weisenburger continued his hot hitting, going 2-3 with a run scored tonight. Weisenburger, generally regarded as the best defensive catcher in the Brewers system, is now hitting .404. Adam now has a modest 6 game hitting streak and is batting .476 over that stretch. Kentrail Davis was on base twice, a single and his team leading 32nd walk.

Huntsville Play By Play

All the scoring happened in the bottom of the 4th

Huntsville Bottom of the 4th

Brock Kjeldgaard hit by pitch.

Mike Walker grounds into a force out, first baseman Dan Black to shortstop Marcus Semien. Brock Kjeldgaard out at 2nd. Mike Walker to 1st.

Adam Weisenburger singles on a soft ground ball to third baseman Daniel Wagner. Mike Walker to 2nd.

Shea Vucinich doubles (4) on a fly ball to left fielder Michael Earley. Mike Walker scores. Adam Weisenburger scores.

Nick Shaw strikes out on a foul tip.

With Hector Gomez batting, Shea Vucinich steals (2) 3rd base.

Hector Gomez flies out to left fielder Michael Earley.

Moye finishes it up

Birmingham Top of the 7th

Michael Earley called out on strikes.

Tyler Saladino strikes out swinging.

Miguel Gonzalez grounds out, third baseman Mike Walker to first baseman Jason Rogers.

Huntsville (26-32) will begin a 5 game series in Montgomery against the Biscuits. Game 1 is scheduled for 7:05. This was Jimmy Nelson's spot in the rotation. Due to technical difficulties, I didn't hear the end of the game or the post game wrap up, so I don't know who will be starting for Huntsville. You can join Stars radio broadcaster Alex Cohen at 6:50 Central for the pregame show.
