2013 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5

It appears our bonus pool is having an immediate influence on the selections.
No question, and that is disappointing.

I would much prefer to have used the 3rd round pick on someone who wasn't nearly as signable since that pick is given back if we don't sign anyone. Now, if we take a risk on a HS guy, they have more leverage since we will be forfeiting the pick.

But likewise, had the Brewers drafted a player who wasn't as signable for the third round, they would've lost more money than if they hadn't been able to sign the guy in, say the seventh round.

all I can think is that they already had some serious talks with Devin Williams and know how much money it will take to sign him, and that its mid first round money, thats all that makes sense here. They just drafted a guy they could have gotten in the 20s that will probably sign for nothing to be a brewer.

what a bust of a draft.... OMG this was ALLLLL sign-ability. how many pick are they going to waste?

Not so much with the day 1 picks. And at this point, with the later rounds, most picks regardless of team is going to be based on signability. It's what the new CBA caused.

Cards take another LHP, this time a HS kid, Ian McKinney. The Cards and Pirates are having really nice drafts.

this could be the end of Seid Draft but it all comes down to Mark A going for Loshe,

Not Seid's fault for having very little to spend on draft picks.

Which may be a built in excuse to give him another year. Hopefully I feel as good about this draft as next year as I did about the 2012 draft before this season started.

I think finally Seid's going in the right direction with the draft. If he's given a large enough budget for the draft he could do well with next year's draft as well.

There's still a huge gamble here. If you fail to sign the 3rd round player, you get the pick back next year. If you fail to sign the 7th round player, you get nothing back.

Overall thoughts on rounds 1-5? Who do you like? Who don't you like? Your thoughts and comments would be greatly appreciated.

this started off really well and is getting very dissappointing :( does anyone have a scouting report for Garrett Cooper? there were another couple hundred guys left on the board all good enough to garner a scouting report and we take this kid...

(sorry, im not usually this negative, but i was hoping these couple days would be a bright spot in a bad season)

Brewers AA--

They have to pick guys who will sign for less in order to have the funds to sign the top two picks. Cooper is another LH 1B from Auburn like Hunter Morris. Hopefully, he will turn out as well. Hit .354 with 7 HR's this year.

scratch that--RH hitter. Will have to platoon with Hunter.

He's about the 10th or 12th guy drafted without an MLB.com scouting report. Imagine the shock and horror of Royals fans when they took a guy at #82 overall without a scouting report.

If we would have taken a 6'3" highschool righty without a scouting report i would have been WAAAAYYYY happier. The Royals also might have pick the hardest man in the draft to sign in Manaea, so its understandable. but highschool righty without a scouting report vs. a college senior without one... not even close to the same deal.\

edit- I apologize, im just really dissappointed. I hope this class ends up being amazing and i can say how wrong i was :)

I'd be way, WAAAAYYYY happier if the Brewers weren't drafting relievers. I guess I'm not that concerned that they drafted someone that the MLB scouting pool writers didn't get around to writing about.

As long as we're using the criteria of "It's ok to draft player X without a scouting report on MLB.com, but definitely not player Y," Cooper was the 4th college player sans scouting report drafted, and the 5th was taken the pick right after him.

Might he be a terrible pick? Absolutely. He might be a good player, too. I wouldn't fret about the scouting report thing, but then again, do what you want.

My honest opinion on the draft so far is that I'm a little bit let down, I really wanted to add at least 1 projectable LHP starting pitcher to the organization. Apparently the 2 guys we discussed early today aren't signable as no one has drafted them.
