He's got a nice mix of pitches, and should have a real power fastball. I do like this pick, and I have to admit, I'm actually excited. I was bracing for the worst, but this was great value for the 54th pick (44th on BBA's top 200 list).

How much weight can be realistically expected for rookies to gain as they mature?
Depends on the guy. But look at Jorge Lopez - he was 88-91 when he was drafted, put on about 20 pounds, and has hit 96 in Low A this year.

Not saying Williams will put on 5 mph immediately, but there's just a ton of raw skill to like. That's why Keith Law has him 20th overall - he's got as much upside as anyone.

Love this pick. Projectable high school arm? Sign me up.

Keith Law's 20th overall prospect.

From ESPN chat.

Chris Crawford

Guess the Brewers had a first round pick after all.

Analysis: Williams is one of the top prep arms in the country, with an athletic build and delivery reminiscent of Mariners prospect Taijuan Walker's and a chance for three above-average or better pitches.

Hmm. We have Jean Segura, and Arcia behind him. So why are we selecting a shortstop? Project third base?

They went the high school route this time. Non-flamethrowers with control problems don't excite me. I hope the kid ends up being good. Hopefully the next draft pick has good command. I'm tired of hoping that our minor leaguers fix their control issues. It seems like the Brewers have more than enough guys that can't locate their pitches.

One can assume if he didn't have a little control issues, then he's likely selected in the 1st round? It's the control that slips him down to our pick.

HS Pitcher Thank You! I hope it's a fun ride reading his development as the next 4 years progress. I wouldn't call him a nonflamethrower if mid 90s are projectable with his frame.

Second pick is Tucker Neuhaus, SS/3B, Wharton HS (FL)

Left-handed hitting third basemen are always a valued commodity and while Neuhaus typically plays shortstop for his Florida high school team, most see a move to the hot corner in his future. He profiles well there, with the chance to hit with a whole lot of power. He's more of a pull hitter than anything else and he'll have to learn to use the whole field to be a more complete hitter. He has good hands and solid footwork and will show glimpses of a plus arm. His range might have been a bit shy for shortstop, but he has more than enough for third.

Just read it's a 3b future moreso than SS.

Also going to add, HS aged in the 3rd round. Gotta believe that's a 5year from now project to the Bigs. Segura may be on his way out by then(hope not but you can't assume he's here beyond 6years)

The 'satche, it's really simple. Odds are he won't make the big leagues, but you can never have too many offensive-minded shortstops. He may switch positions, but even of he sticks at SS, we likely won't see him in Milwaukee for 5-6 Yeats. Segura could be gone, Arcia could be traded (see Escobar and Hardy)

Of good weight? Or MLB pitcher weight? Still being relatively lean he could easily end up in the 210-220 range. If he puts on bad weight like so many of us non athletes he could be much heavier.

Also, it's an old axiom that drafts are often ss heavy because the best players, especially in hs, often play ss, and ss prospects have the whole defensive spectrum to move down. My favorite fun fact along these lines is that Gorman Thomas was drafted as a ss. Even if you're a draft-for-positional-need fan, you never need fear drafting a ss.

Guys change position all the time. Moving off of SS is the easiest move to make since SS is usually the best athlete. Not to mention Arcia hasn't done anything yet and could bust. Segura might leave via free agency by the time this guy makes to the bigs. Also, SS is traditionally a position of need around baseball and the more good shortstops you have the more chips you have to trade. Always take best player available regardless of position. In baseball more so than any other sport.

The pirates are having an excellent draft....

You can tell that already?

Just like the football drafts anyone who thinks they can project these guys is simply insane. There is no reason at all to get excited about drafts because your opinions on the guys your team pick are completely useless.

Any chance the Brewers take Covey?

That would be interesting.

Sorry, it is simply realism. I have lived way too long and watched way too many drafts and seen way too many results that weren't expected. Hoping we draft such and such is great because you believe in them, judging how good a draft is on draft day is just beyond silly and useless. You are basically drawing straws. The person who walks away from today's draft and says team X did a great job is just deluding themselves.
