I'm excited that Green has dropped this far, but at the same time I'd fear he'd be major bust with the Brewers, the closer the pick gets the more I think maybe Taylor would be the better pitching choice if they were going to go the LHP HS route.

Shouldn't it be a prerequisite that the guys doing these announcements speak friggin' English? Between Jose Cruz and Pedro Astacio, I didn't understand a word they said.

Ryan McMahon is going to go back to watch the moment he was drafted on the DVR, and have difficulty picking his own name out of that jumbled mess.

The pirates are having an excellent draft....

So are the Cards, this stinks, and now we go to commercial for the Brewers pick. Wonderful.

Williams, Devin Hazelwood West HS (MO) RHP R/R HS 6'03" 165lbs DOB: 09/21/94 | Scouting videoIf projectable high school pitching is your cup of tea, then Williams might be just the kind of right-hander to pique your interest. The Missouri prepster is tall and lean with a projectable pitching frame. He's a bit raw on the mound, but there's a lot to like, starting with a fastball that sits in the low-90s, with plenty of room for added velocity as he gets stronger. His secondary stuff needs work, but he does show a feel for a solid sinking changeup and his slider shows glimpses of having good, short tilt to it. Like with many high school arms like this, his command and control need a good amount of refinement. A team taking Williams will have to be patient, as it might take some time for everything to come together. But the upside potential is there and is bound to have many organizations interested.

BA's scouting report on Devin Williams:

Scouts noted Williams' projectable frame at last summer's USA Baseball Breakthrough Series, where the 6-foot-3, 172-pounder worked at 85-88 mph from a loose, easy delivery. He has reached his fastball velocity sooner than anticipated, jumping to 91-93 mph last fall at the World Wood Bat Association World Championships and often showing the same heat this spring. He usually pitches at 88-92 mph with his two-seam fastball and can approach 95 with his four-seamer. Though Williams is inconsistent with his mechanics and his stuff, when he's at his best he stays closed and direct with his delivery and exhibits feel for three pitches. His breaking ball can get slurvy but also can be a low-80s slider at the knees, and his fading, sinking changeup can throw hitters off balance. He's athletic and his arm works well. A Missouri recruit, Williams has looked like a first-round pick at times. While there's speculation that the Cardinals could take the suburban St. Louis product at No. 28, he fits better in the second round.

You can tell that already?

He's similar to Hunter Green, except he's a righty, he scares me some. Very nice upside, needs mechanical work, not all that polished, but projectable.

edit. I should have been more clear He's 6'4" but only 175 lbs... so he still has to fill out his body and it's likely he can pick up significant velocity. The thing that scares me is that the Brewers haven't done well correcting these kinds of kids with poor control in the past.

Great first pick. The guy is 175 dripping wet, he'll go to rookie ball and come out next season at 190 sitting 92-96. He's got feel for a changeup and he's a good athlete, so he'll have 3 pitches. Best part? When that velocity increases, his slider is going to tighten up.

Love this pick. Exactly what we needed to do.

They went the high school route this time. Non-flamethrowers with control problems don't excite me. I hope the kid ends up being good. Hopefully the next draft pick has good command. I'm tired of hoping that our minor leaguers fix their control issues. It seems like the Brewers have more than enough guys that can't locate their pitches.

Slider, Changeup, Fastball. Nice arsenal of pitches. Tall and lean frame which is good. Kind of like a Lincecum frame?

Nothing like Lincecum. Big kid at 6'3" who will be every bit of 200 by the time he's in the big leagues. He just hasn't added the muscle yet.

Also has nice run on his fastball from video. If he keeps that as he gains velocity, his FB could grade out at 65-70 future.

How much weight can be realistically expected for rookies to gain as they mature?
