2013 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5

Don't worry too much about guys not having a report written up, that doesn't mean they weren't heavily scouted.

For all of the efforts to create, "rhyme and reason" in the MLB Draft, I have seen first hand...it does not exist.

Having Lohse at the front of the rotation for the next few years will allow us to trade Gallardo for the right price without completely blowing up the rotation. That way, we still have at least 1 guy we can count on for good innings and to give the bullpen a day of rest.

Now, obviously we all would have preferred that this come from a guy who didn't cost a 1st round pick (Ryan Dempster was my choice).

But, at the end of the day, what helps the farm more - taking a guy at 17 and having to keep Gallardo or keeping Lohse, losing 17 and getting a haul of prospects?

(I realize that may be a false equivalency, but it's my spin to justify the move after the fact and I'm sticking to it!)

A haul of prospects for Gallardo? Did Lohse bring a time machine with him?

I think the team went well with Williams and the slot money killed them for anything special in the other remaining picks. I hope Neuhas provides something for the Brewers with his pick. Then you are looking at RPs? Well, if you have to save money yet capably can acquire a player to make it at the ML level. I think the RP is where it is at. Wonder if the success of the trade a week ago on a 4th rd RP selection steered the way in to the thinking RPs bring value at a small cost.

I guess when you look at it when it comes to the number of successful picks beyond the 3rd/4th rounds, Being disappointed with the selections now probably doesn't mean much over the other player you hoped they'd select.

Last year the Red Sox drafted college seniors in rounds 7-10 who they called before the draft and asked if they would sign for $1000 so that they could allocate that slot money towards earlier picks. I'm not sure that's a bad strategy. I hope that Cooper and Ratterree had pre-negotiated deals for well below slot value to do the same thing.

Astin, Williams, and Uhen will not be easy signs - while they are college players they are juniors so they have some leverage in going back to school to try to improve their stock. The fact that they are relievers helps mitigate any potential arm abuse (i.e. 130 pitch outings) heaped on starters by college coaches. Wagner, Goforth, and Magnifico have all transitioned from college relievers to starters fairly well so far. Uhen is coming back from TJ surgery in 2011 and at 6'4" 185 he still has room to fill out and add on to his already big fastball (regularly 94, touches 97). The question with Uhen is if he can develop his secondary pitches.

Looking at the history of 4th-5th round picks and their success rate in even making the majors much less becoming impact players, I would be very happy if either of them turned into a solid major league reliever. Guys like Jeremy Hellickson are by far the exception, not the rule.

Interesting note on Astin, the scouting report says "relies on low-90's sinker". He only gave up one HR in 340 ABs, and only 10 extra-base hits (9 doubles, 1 HR) of the 85 hits he gave up. 75 singles, 9 doubles, one HR. Pretty good for the SEC.

Taylor Williams in 105.2 IP gave up only 83 hits, struck out 110, and walked only 18. Against 394 batters he only gave up one HR as well (16 doubles, six triples).

I like that these guys don't give up HRs. Means they keep the ball down.

Williams gets the call by the Brewers -- Dream comes true for Camas pitcher

Williams will take a few days to decide whether or not to sign a contract with the Brewers. He still has one year of college eligibility left, but the offer to turn pro is tempting.

“The dream will never stop until it’s achieved. This is just the beginning of a new chapter,” Williams said. “I’m not going to stop until I make it to the big leagues.”

Last year's 15th round pick, RHP Buck Farmer from Georgia Tech, was just drafted in the 5th round by the Tigers. Good move for him not to sign last year, apparently.

But he's a senior now, so last year's leverage is gone. Will be interesting to see what he signs for.

Tucker Neuhaus has signed with the Brewers for $771,000.

That sounds like below slot value? Haven't looked at anything for 2nd round picks and their slot values but that looks a little bit low?

That was the exact slot value.

Hmmm I was thinking it was over 800k this year for 2nd round picks.

I'm down with that move... get him to his best position ASAP and let him settle in.

BA fixed the 2013 Draft Database since I last checked it Saturday night. The binoculars are the scouting reports and the calculator gives the pool plus the amount the team can go over without forfeiting a draft pick. It's handy.

Neuhas's signing. It stated the exact slot amount and a bonus to compensate his expected college fees by not attending school. something like 64,000 I wanna say.

This is off the top of my head reading a day ago.

So does that bonus not go in to the amount in the draft pool? Is it just 772k? or did he sign then for 836k?

BA is listing the bonus at 771,000 for pool purposes.

I would very much like to see the college compensation issue become a MLB administered benefit. If you are a HS kid taken in the first 20 rounds you get X number of dollars towards college per year based on your years of service or some other such measure. There would certainly have to be accountability clauses as a player shouldn't get the benefit for getting a lifetime ban for drug use or running afoul of the law. Also, say a pitcher blows out his arm after 1 season, he should still be entitled to some form of benefit given that baseball caused his injury. I'd just like to see MLB emphasize education with a built in scholarship program, give the HS kids the opportunity to fall back on something even if they aren't a top pick in the first 3 rounds of the draft.

Taylor Williams gets the call by the Milwaukee Brewers

Pitcher accepts $400,000 signing bonus

By Dan Trujillo, Camas-Washougal (Washington) Post-Record

Taylor Williams got the call he had been waiting for his whole life Friday.

The Milwaukee Brewers selected the 21-year-old Camas pitcher in the fourth round of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft. Williams was the 122nd pick overall.

"It's amazing and surreal," said the 2010 Camas High School graduate. "Ever since I started playing baseball, this has been a dream and a goal in my life.

"I've worked so hard for this moment," Williams added. "I thank my family and friends for being there with me every step of the way. I thank the community of Camas, as a whole. Every coach and every teammate I've had growing up have been a factor in me getting drafted."
