Do we see Ginger power go #1? Or one of the pitchers?

Baseball America picks Jonathan Gray of Oklahoma to go first to Houston. I think that's a good solid pick, as Houston has the bats in their system now. They need some starting pitching.

Hard to say, a lot would depend on who fell to them. When it comes to 17, and I see who's available, I'm sure I'll be grumbling.

Ian Clarkin would have probably been one of my choices. Left hander, fastball hits 94/95. Nice K:BB ratio (I'm a little tired of Brewer prospects walking everybody), and per BBA, he's got one of the best breaking balls in the entire class.

Hey Bud, taking some time off of your Ryan Braun witch hunt tonight?

Wow, Appel #1. Chicago just got Jonathan Gray if they want him. That just sucks for us.

Bryant goes to the Cubs. Apparently they're going to pure offense, no pitching route.

Cubs go with Bryant. Thought they'd go pitching but hard to argue against taking the best power bat in the draft.

The Cubs have power in their system. Baez, Soler, Vogelbach. They have almost no pitching. Vizcaino has serious health issues.

Rockies take Gray. They're putting together a nice young talent base.

Twins are next up.

Frazier would be a great pick for the Twins. He's got the power to hit it out of Target Field, no problem. He, Sano and Arcia and Willingham (if he's still there and healthy) could really mash.

Come to think of it, Willingham will be gone by the time those guys get up. I thought he was 32. He's 34

Stewart. Interesting.

Cleveland is up, then we get to see which future ex-Marlin Miami selects. :laughing

Cleveland goes Ginger power! Turn down the brightness on your tv screens.

Remember, Vegas, you have both high school and collegiate players in the draft, so it's not quite cut and dry as far as who has the bigger bust rate. I'd suspect pitchers, because of health and development issues that can creep up during their minor league careers. Offensive players have more ways to get to the Majors (speed, hitting, defense). If a pitcher can't pitch, they won't get to the big show.

Looking at the current Baseball America, which broke this very thing down in detail. It breaks down positions by high school and college, and then gives a percentage of which players drafted went on to have an impact in the Majors (WAR 10 or higher, from 1989 through 2008):

Catchers:

high school 9 of 81 (11%)

college 8 of 65 (12%)

Shortstops:

high school 11 of 132 (8%)

college 9 of 73 (12%)

Third basemen:

high school 6 of 61 (10%)

college 10 of 47 (21%)

Second base:

high school 0

college 3 of 22 (14%)

Outfield:

high school 23 of 194 (12%)

college 20 of 153 (13%)

First base:

high school 5 of 38 (13%)

college 8 of 44 (18%)

I'd expect that in the next issue, when they break down pitchers, they'll have lower impact rates. It's hard to draft and develop successful starting pitchers. Just ask Doug Melvin. :laughing

This baseball draft stuff is a lot more complex than the NFL draft. There are so many prospects from so many schools to look at. Once drafted we usually don't hear about these rookies for 2 to 3 years unless they are really special. I think that with pitchers it's kind of simple. Like you said, if they can't pitch then they can't pitch. Hitters have many other ways to get to the show. Guys with poor mechanics and control issues should easy to spot right? If so then what the heck was Melvin looking at when he drafted all of these poor control guys?

Is the draft tracker frozen for anyone else?

Incredibly slow.

Does anyone else see the brewers as "Milwaukee Pewers" on the MLB.com draft selection page? And the Atlanta "Paves". Did someone in New Delhi not read the handbook that tells them Br is not P.....

Hunter Dozier to KC? He was the 4th Hunter on the BA list (behind Hunter Renfroe, Hunter Green, Hunter Harvey). I am guessing they made a pre-draft deal to save some money for the later picks.

MLB.com not really loading for me, and I have 57 Mbps speed from FIOS. Their website is getting slammed right now.

So much for Grey's Adderall issue not affecting his draft status. The Cubs who desperately need pitching pass after it was supposedly universal that Grey was the more talented pitcher between him and Appel. He cost himself a couple of million dollars, I'll be curious what the Cubs do later on. I thought Appel or Grey was a lock for them at 2.

I'm new to baseball drafts. Throughout draft history, which has a higher bust rate, hitters or pitchers?

Pitchers by far are the riskier choice, injuries are a much bigger factor for pitchers than hitters.

Ya, I'm still pretty shocked that the Cubs passed on Jonathan Gray. Who are they expecting to pitch for them?
