His build reminds me of Fielder's. Certainly looked similar in that HR competiton video.

 

EDIT: Whoops, he's 6'4"... misread his ht/wt on the MLB Draft Tracker as 6'0"/245. More comparable to a Ryan Howard, but he's still stocky like Prince.

Hillis sounds nasty, put up HS-like numbers (37 IP, 15 H, 66 K). Hopefully better coaching at the professional level can help him develop his offspeed pitches.

 

Command is a bit of a concern for Johnson, but only gave up 52 H in 77 IP and zero HR in 275 ABs.

 

Mankato's website says Matheson is a redshirt freshman (?) - are DII players eligible after two years? Wonder if he was hurt or a medical redshirt last year given how few innings he pitched (17.2), but the results were good (6 H, 21 K). In his only start gave up 1 H in 6 IP.

One of the things I like about Garrett Cooper is that his OBP has consistently been 100 points higher than his BA. That doesn't always translate when a player gets into pro ball, but in general I love players who can get on-base and are patient at the plate. Not sure how long it might take Cooper to get to the show but he could potentially be a good platoon partner with Hunter Morris

LHP Daniel Gibson went in the 7th round to the Diamondbacks. The Brewers drafted him out of high school in the 26th round in 2010 and offered him third-round money (at least $500,000).

One thing I like (maybe just an accidental good thing) is that a number of the college pitchers selected were NOT work horses. It is almost nice to hear of guys who throw low 90s, are a work in progress, and did bullpen work, and therefore had innings limited. To me, they are almost the 'high school' type. You are not really sure you know what you are getting. But maybe with some solid application they will improve.

 

But that brings me to fear of the Brewers pitching development people. They don't seem to be real good at their job.

Denson made headlines in January when he hit a ball an estimated 515 feet, with a metal bat, at Marlins Park during the Power Showcase. That enormous power is clearly his best tool and he will have to improve his overall hitting so he can tap into that power consistently at higher levels, though he's proven to be coachable. While he's limited to first base, he's a good athlete and moves well for his size and the Hawaii commit was also a good pitcher armed with a 90-mph fastball in high school.

 

Here is my "we need to get signed high schooler" of this years draft. Could take some work but seems like he has some potential to be a big time bat. Size and power reminds me of a Jason Rogers but with more upside.

I agree. Just watching how easy his swing was on that 515' shot got me excited about this kid. Forget Jason Rogers, this kid is already (at 17!) closer to the size of Ryan Howard.

What are the chances the Brewers are able to sign Denson?

 

The picks in rounds 11-40 don't count against the pool unless they go over $100k, then the excess is counted towards the pool, correct?

 

Will they be able to sign a few of the first ten picks under slot to build up enough of a bonus to offer Denson?

Bishop Brossart's Tanner Norton signs with Brewers

When Tanner Norton was young and just began picking up a bat to play baseball, his grandfather, Bob Norton, suggested to his right-handed throwing grandson that he hit left-handed, and that advice has helped Tanner become a professional baseball player.

 

Tanner Norton, a recent graduate of Bishop Brossart High School where he was a standout catcher, was selected in the 13th Round of the Major League Baseball draft this past Saturday by the Milwaukee Brewers and signed with the Brewers on Monday.

 

No terms were disclosed and Norton said he will report to the team’s rookie camp and await his assignment.

 

“The money was just about what we had hoped and it just felt right so I decided to go ahead and sign,” said Norton. “I really haven’t had that to think about it all: being away from my family and starting my professional career in baseball.”

 

Norton won’t turn 18 years old until July.

 

The powerfully built 6-foot, 205-pound Norton helped Brossart advance to the state semifinals in 2012 when he hit .431 with five homers, 18 doubles and 30 RBI. He went 1 for 4 with a double in a state semifinal matchup against Woodford County pitcher Clinton Hollon, who was selected in the second round of the draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. No stats were available for Norton from this past season.

 

He said he caught the eyes of scouts during a showcase for top players last summer.

 

“There was not a guy who threw under 90 (mph) and I hit the ball well,” said Norton. “Scouts knew I could hit and hit with power.”

 

It also didn’t hurt that he’s left-handed hitting catcher and showed he could hit the ball with a wooden bat, too, last summer. He opted to use a wooden bat this past high school season, too.

 

“I played for a guy in the summer who is also a scout for the Brewers, Mike Farrell, and he said I should use a wood and I showed I could handle the ball with a wood bat and decided to keep using it,” said Norton. “I can’t thank my grandpa and my dad enough for turning me around and hitting left-handed. I have to say that helped.”

Moore signs contract after proposal

FAYETTEVILLE — Brandon Moore isn't likely to forget Thursday any time soon.

 

The former Arkansas pitcher, drafted last weekend in the 17th round, signed a pro contract with the Milwaukee Brewers in Helena, Mont. late Thursday night, just hours after proposing to his girlfriend at XNA airport in Highfill. She said yes.

 

"It's a pretty exciting day," Moore said. "I was thinking about it on the way here to Helena, today is the start of a life change. I got a job, engaged, so it's a big season of life and I'm ready for it."

 

Moore said the engagement ring he ordered hadn't arrived by his time of departure Thursday, making the day a little more stressful.

 

"I went to Walmart and bought a cheap ring at 7 this morning," he said. "I used that today. It's kind of a weird process, but the deed was done.

 

"I'm still waiting on the other one. It's a little bit nicer."

 

Moore, a right-handed pitcher, will join Razorbacks teammate Barrett Astin on the Brewers' rookie league roster in Helena. Astin signed earlier this week after being drafted in the third round last Friday. Both players are forgoing their final season of eligibility with the Razorbacks.

 

Moore is the sixth player to sign a pro contract from Arkansas' 2013 roster. Pitcher Trent Daniel (Colorado Rockies) and outfielder Jacob Morris (Chicago White Sox) signed Tuesday, while pitcher Randall Fant (Houston Astros) and outfielder Matt Vinson (Arizona Diamondbacks) signed earlier Thursday.

 

Ryne Stanek, Colby Suggs, Dominic Ficociello, Tyler Wright and Eric Fisher are the only of Arkansas' 11 drafted players yet to sign. Ficociello is expected to sign his 12th-round contract with the Detroit Tigers before the end of the week.

 

In three years at Arkansas, Moore became the Razorbacks' most trusted long relief pitcher.

 

The Van Buren native was part of the most decorated pitching class in program history. He, Astin, Stanek, Suggs and Nolan Sanburn combined for a 1.21 earned run average in 124 innings of NCAA postseason play. All were part of the Razorbacks' 2010 signing class.

 

Stanek was selected in the first round this year by the Tampa Bay Rays and Suggs was drafted in the second round by the Miami Marlins. Sanburn was a second round draft pick last year of the Oakland Athletics.
