Via the Stars --

On Saturday, the Huntsville Stars series-ending doubleheader against the Jackson Generals was cancelled due to unplayable field conditions at The Ballpark at Jackson and impending inclement weather in the Jackson area.

Both games will not be made up at a later date.

Since the Stars took two of three games in the shortened series against the Generals, it gives them their third series victory in their last four tries.

The Stars will return home to start a five-game series against the Birmingham Barons on Sunday at Joe Davis Stadium. First pitch is at 4:03 CT.

Look for RHP Cody Scarpetta (he'll be 25 in August) to join the Manatees roster any day now, he's coming back from 2012 Tommy John surgery (performed by Lewis Yocum, who just passed away).

The Brewers own Scarpetta's rights through 2014 -- if he shows a lot in the 2nd half, he could be a Rule 5 loss candidate. he is out of minor league options, so it'd be unlikely he'd be added back to the 40-man this fall, as the Brewers would lose roster flexibility with him next spring.

T-Rats will have a delayed start, we had a big thunderstorm roll through around 5:30 local time but sun is back out now. The game is expected to start around 7:30 PM.

With rain delays affecting several other FSL games, the BC Manatees probably wish they could have been so lucky. Rough start for Chad Pierce, the second time he has started a game this season.

Pierce final line: 2.1 IP / 12 H / 10 ER / 2 BB / 4 K / Hits included 6 doubles and 1 HR

Blaski isn't working very hard, last FB 88 MPH on the stadium gun per Chris. Just guessing but I'd probably compare him to an Austin Ross type.

Final: DSL Tigers 6, DSL Brewers 3

The Dominican Summer League season kicked off this morning with the Brewers dropping their opener to the Tigers by a score of 6-3.

The Brewers got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Back-to-back one out singles by Juan Ortiz and Sthervin Matos put runners at the corners with one out. After Matos swiped second base, Yunior Santana lifted a fly ball to right to score Ortiz and give the Brewers a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers struck back in the third with three runs off Brewers starter Victor Diaz. Manuel Joseph doubled, and with one out stole third base. The throw from Kevin Martinez sailed in to left field allowing Joseph to score and tie the game at 1-1. Ignacio Valdez walked and then moved to second on a ground out. Sandy Acevedo followed with a double to score Valdez. Acevedo moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when Francisco Contreras doubled to left to make it 3-1 Tigers.

The Tigers added two more in the seventh when Acevedo led off the inning with a walk and Contreras followed with a two run home run to center field off Joshua Torres. They would tack on one more in the ninth inning when a Contreras sacrifice fly scored Willy Adames to make it 7-1.

The Brewers tried to mount a rally in the bottom of the ninth. Carlos Belonis led off with a single and Ortiz followed with a double to score Belonis. With one out, Yunior Santana doubled to left, scoring Ortiz and making the score 6-3. That would be all they could manage though as Tigers reliever Gerson Moreno came on to retire the final two batters.

The DSL teams are off on Sunday before the Brewers travel to the Tigers facility for a rematch on Monday.

DSL Brewers Box Score

Outfielder Juan Ortiz got the season started on the right foot, going 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Third baseman Sthervin Matos also had a 2 for 4 game for the Brewers and stole a base. Carlos Belonis, who played 33 of 34 games at shortstop last season, started today in center field. He went 1 for 4 and scored a run. Right fielder Yunior Santana had a double and a sac fly. He had two of the Brewers three RBI. Catcher Kevin Martinez had the other Brewers base hit, but also committed the lone error of the game. 17-year-old shortstop Daniel Leonardo, making his debut, drew the lone Brewers walk.

19-year-old Victor Diaz got the start for the Brewers after pitching in 13 games out of the bullpen last season. He went four innings and allowed three runs, all earned, on seven hits. Puerto Rican righty Joshua Torres relieved Diaz and worked three innings. He gave up just one hit, but it was a two run home run. Newly acquired Nelson Arguila pitched the final two innings, giving up one run on one hit.

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Nashville Sounds opened their road trip on the short end of an 8-5 defeat at the hands of the Round Rock Express on Saturday evening at The Dell Diamond in the opener of a four-game series.

The Sounds (17-37) continued their struggles away from Music City, losing for the 17th time in their last 21 road games.

Left-hander Martin Perez (2-1) defeated Nashville with a quality start, holding the Sounds to two runs on three hits while striking out five batters of his six frames of action.

Nashville pitchers were unable to produce any shutdown innings on the night. Each time the Sounds scored in the top of a frame, Round Rock rallied to score runs of its own in the home half.

Round Rock got off to a quick start offensively, jumping on Tyler Thornburg for three first-inning runs.

Engel Beltre led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run to right off the right-hander, the outfielder's first roundtripper of the year. Robinson Chirinos (3-for-4) followed Beltre with single before racing all the way home on Chris McGuinness' double off the right field wall to make it a 2-0 contest.

McGuinness moved to third on a throwing error by Scooter Gennett on the play and Aaron Cunningham drew a walk to put runners on the corners for Yangervis Solarte, who grounded into a double play to plate the third Express run of the frame as the Sounds minimized the damage in the frame with the twin-killing.

Beltre helped the Express with his glove in the second inning, leaping above the wall in center field to rob Hunter Morris of his 11th home run of the year with a spectacular catch.

Shortstop Josh Prince (2-for-4) put the Sounds on the board in the third when he led off the frame with a solo homer to left off Perez, his fourth big fly of the year.

Round Rock got the run back in the home half of the frame against Thornburg when McGuinness ripped his second two-bagger of the night and later scored on a sacrifice fly to up the Express lead to 4-1.

The Sounds got a run back from Perez with a two-out rally against Perez in the fifth. After the first two batters had been retired, Nashville loaded the bases on a Prince bunt single followed by consecutive walks before Perez uncorked a wild pitch to allow Prince to race home to cut the deficit to 4-2. The Round Rock left-hander fanned Gennett, however, to escape the jam with a pair of runners stranded in scoring position.

The Express once again answered a Nashville score with a rally of their own in the bottom of the frame, plating two runs in the home half of the fifth to extend the lead to 6-2.

Chirinos and Solarte singled to put a pair of runners on board with two outs. Clay Hensley replaced Thornburg on the hill for the Sounds and was greeted by a bloop Jim Adduci RBI single that dropped into shallow right field. Cole Garner made a throwing error on the play to allow Solarte to score from first in unearned fashion.

Thornburg (0-7) remained winless on the year as he suffered another loss for the Sounds. He allowed six runs (four earned) on eight hits in his 4 2/3 innings of work to take his fifth defeat in his last seven starts.

Caleb Gindl pulled Nashville back within a run with one swing of the bat in the top of the eighth inning, belting a three-run homer to right-center off Express reliever Yoshinori Tateyama. Blake Lalli (single) and Gennett (walk) each scored on the outfielder's sixth roundtripper of the year, which made it a 6-5 contest.

For the third time in the contest, Round Rock answered a Nashville score in the top of a frame with one of its own in the home half, netting two insurance runs against Kyle Heckathorn on a sacrifice fly and wild pitch to extend the advantage to 8-5.

Express closer Cory Burns slammed the door on the Sounds with a perfect ninth to notch his 12th save.

The teams continue the series with a 7:05 p.m. on Sunday evening. Left-hander Zach Kroenke (2-7, 5.18) will start for the Sounds and face Round Rock right-hander Josh Lindlom (5-0, 2.15).

Nashville Box

The Sounds' 3 through 6 hitters went a combined 0-15 in this one. Ouch.

Gennett: 0-3, BB, E (throw)

Gindl: 1-4, HR, 3 RBI

Prince: 2-4, HR, RBI, SB

Lalli: 1-3, BB

Garner: 1-2, 2B, BB, PO, E (throw)

Thornburg's home ERA currently sits at 3.82, while his road ERA has ballooned to 10.30. This season has been a train wreck so far for Tyler. You just have to hope he can persevere, and that better days are ahead.

Hopefully he can ascend like Peralta did last year, but then again Tunnell and company came and spent a week in Nashville just to work with Peralta, that's not an option anymore. Well the "and company" is I guess.

Timber Rattlers stopped by Chiefs and themselves

Wisconsin commits four errors in 8-1 loss to Peoria

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Peoria Chiefs seemed to take advantage of every Wisconsin Timber Rattlers miscue on Saturday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Chiefs also delivered some key hits on their way to an 8-1 victory over the Rattlers. Wisconsin committed four errors that led to four unearned runs for the Chiefs in the game.

The Timber Rattlers (23-28) had a chance for a big inning in the bottom of the first. Michael Reed singled and Orlando Arcia followed with a hit-and-run single to put runners on the corners with no outs. But, Wisconsin did not score in the frame.

Wisconsin had two outs and none on in the bottom of the third inning. Tyrone Taylor singled to keep the inning alive. Then, Max Walla cracked a double to right to score Taylor for a 1-0 lead.

Peoria (29-24) responded - with help from the Rattlers - in the top of the fourth. Ildemaro Vargas singled and Jacob Wilson was hit by a pitch. Jordan Walton bunted up the third base line and Rattlers pitcher Austin Blaski fielded the bunt, but his throw to third sailed down the left field line. By the time the ball was corralled in the corner, two runs had scored and the Chiefs were up 2-1.

Blaski had runners at first and third with two outs in the top of the fifth, but struggled to get the third out. Wilson, Walton, and Patrick Wisdom hit consecutive RBI singles with two outs to push Peoria's lead to 5-1.

The Chiefs had Adam Ehrlich at first with two outs and Blaski made a pitch to get out of the inning, but an error on the grounder to second kept the inning alive. Blaski made another pitch to get out of the inning, but a popup about 25 feet up the third baseline from home plate was dropped. That allowed Ehrlich to score from second base and make it 6-1 in favor of Peoria.

Joe Cuda allowed scattered seven hits over six innings and allowed the one run. He also struck out six while walking just one.

Peoria scored a run in the top of the eighth inning on a two-out error and tacked on one more in the ninth on an RBI double by Breyvic Valera.

The series continues on Sunday afternoon. Jorge Lopez (1-4, 9.24) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Peoria plans to put Hector Hernandez on the mound. Game time is 1:05pm.

The left field berm will be set aside for pets and their owners on Sunday as part of the 5th annual Bark in the Park presented by Invisible Fence by Golrusk, an Invisible Fence Brand authorized dealer, and Golrusk Pet Care Center. Tickets are $5 for owners and free for dogs. Click this link for full details on the event.

It's a Brewers Sunday presented by 107.5, The Fan, too. Timber Rattlers players will wear Brewers-themed jerseys during the game.

Fans may play catch on-field before the game and get autographs from the players in a post-game autograph session. Time Warner Cable customers receive up to four half-priced reserved bleacher tickets when showing their TWC bill at time of ticket purchase.

Plus, Miller Summer Kickoff continues with Miller Beer products available for $1.

If you can't make it out to the stadium, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 12:45pm. Sunday's game is also available to subscribers of MiLB.TV.

WP: Joe Cuda (3-3)

LP: Austin Blaski (2-2)

TIME: 2:41 (1:26 delay)

ATTN: 4,867

Wisconsin Boxscore

I'm almost positive I heard Chris say that Jorge Lopez is a proud new papa? If so congratulations are in order.

Orlando Arcia had a weird play that was scored an error. A ball was hit at him and he looked at 3rd, then 2nd, then finally threw to 1st but the runner beat the throw, it must have been scored a FC.

Wisconsin Recap

The WI top of the first, would have been nice to jump out early...

Wisconsin Bottom of the 1st

  • Michael Reed singles on a ground ball to right fielder Nick Martini.
Orlando Arcia singles on a line drive to right fielder Nick Martini. Michael Reed to 3rd.
Tyrone Taylor flies out to left fielder Breyvic Valera.
    Max Walla strikes out swinging.
With Victor Roache batting, Orlando Arcia steals (8) 2nd base.
Victor Roache grounds out, shortstop Ildemaro Vargas to first baseman Jordan Walton.

Brevard shelled at Daytona, 14-5

'Tees allow season-highs in both runs and hits

By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/1/2/8/45452128/cuts/Rivera_4.7_1_11cqiqdc_vn1jf6l3.JPG

Manatees shortstop Yadiel Rivera, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 2-for-4 with two RBI in Brevard County's 14-5 loss to the Daytona Cubs on Saturday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach. In his last five games, Rivera is hitting .333.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Daytona Cubs scored early and often on its way to a 14-5 win over the Brevard County Manatees on Saturday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, with all 14 of Daytona's runs coming in the first four innings.

Through those opening frames, the first five men in the Cubs order each had four plate appearances, with Javier Baez recording four of his five total hits for the game. Those four hits included three doubles and a home run, accounting for six runs batted in and three runs scored.

Daytona was held to just one run was scored in the first inning, despite the first three batters in the lineup all reaching base before an out was recorded. Five runs came across in the second as the Cubs batted around. The second innings included a total of five hits, including three doubles, plus a walk.

Brevard County (28-26) gave itself hope of repeating Friday night's comeback effort with a run in the top of the third. Chadwin Stang doubled, moved to third on T.J. Mittelstaedt's single and then scored on a Greg Hopkins sacrifice fly.

Stang finished as one of four men to record multiple hits for the Manatees, joining Mittelstaedt, Cody Hawn and Yadiel Rivera.

The third inning proved most troublesome for the 'Tees, with the Daytona (27-26) sending 11 men to the dish and bringing six across to extend their lead to 14-1. Just two of the team's seven hits in the frame went for extra bases, including the three-run home run by Javier Baez and a double by Dustin Geiger.

Brevard County starting pitcher Chad Pierce (2-2, 4.42) was lifted in favor of Stephen Peterson during the third and would be saddled with the loss. Pierce allowed a career high ten runs on 12 hits and walked two while striking out four in 2.1 innings.

Jorge Soler added the only other home run of the night in the bottom of the fourth inning, a two run shot that brought home Baez after his third double. Both of those hits came with two outs.

Peterson went 2.2 innings and was charged with four runs, including two in the third inning and the two on Soler's homer. He retired the first two batters in both the fourth and fifth innings, but still allowed a total of six hits with just one walk and two strikeouts.

Daytona's 14 runs and 20 hits marked season highs in each category for a Manatees opponent.

Andre Lamontagne appeared next out of the bullpen and turned in his best outing of the year, needing only 16 pitches to get through two full innings. It was his first multiple inning assignment and he held the Cubs to only one hit. Kevin Shackelford fanned two with a hit and a walk in the eighth and final defensive inning for Brevard.

Chipping away at Daytona's bullpen and Austin Reed, the first man behind Daytona starting pitcher P.J. Francescon, the Manatees opened the seventh with a Hawn double and then consecutive singles from Ben McMahan and Rivera to bring a run across. McMahan was also scored when Mitch Haniger drew a bases loaded walk.

The Manatees also scored one run each in both the eighth and ninth innings. Rivera drove in Hawn with a two-out single in the eighth and Nick Ramirez plated Mittelstaedt on a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

The third and final game of the series will take place Sunday evening at Space Coast Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m.

Brevard County Box Score

FINAL: Daytona 14, Brevard County 5

T.J. Mittelstaedt: 2-3, 2 BB (has now reached base in 22 of his 23 games this year)

Gregory Hopkins: 1-4, RBI

Mitch Haniger: 0-4, BB, RBI

Nick Ramirez: 1-4, RBI (35 RBI's on the year)

Cody Hawn: 2-4, 2B

Ben McMahan: 1-4

Yadiel Rivera: 2-4, 2 RBI (4 hits in his last two games)

Chadwin Stang: 2-4, 2B

Coming into the game Chad Pierce had given up just 18 hits in 36.1 IP. In today's spot start Pierce gave up 12 hits and 10 ER in 2.1 IP and Stephen Peterson followed with 4 ER in 2.2 IP. Andre Lamontagne and Kevin Shackelford combined to throw 3 IP, giving up 2 hits and 0 runs. After opening June by giving up 20 hits and 14 runs the bullpen might want to consider reverting back to the look they sported during "Mustache May".

In 2011, Hunter Morris set a Brevard County single-season record with 19 HRs. Nick Ramirez has already hit 12 for the 'Tees so far; I'm guessing he's going to establish a new BC single-season HR record pretty comfortably.
