Your 2013 Dominican Summer League Brewers

Brewer Fanatic Staff

The Dominican Summer League begins its 2013 season tomorrow, Saturday June 1st. The DSL regular season ends on August 24th. The Brewers are in the four-team San Pedro de Macoris Division along with the Blue Jays, Braves, and Tigers, although they will face other squads as well.

Here are the brand new Brewers who will be making their professional debuts:

RHP Nattino Diplan, a 19-year-old RHP (20 in December) -- 6'3", 180

***

RHP Yosmer Leal, a 17-year-old RHP (2/26/1996)

From July 2012 -- The Brewers reached an agreement earlier this month with 16-year-old pitching prospect Yosmer Leal, a right-hander from Venezuela who still must pass a physical exam and Major League Baseball's age investigation.

Leal received a $370,000 bonus, according to MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez, which would be one of the richest deals in Brewers history for a Latin American player.

Assuming he passes MLB's investigation, standard procedure for all Latin American signees, Leal would begin his career at the Brewers' new academy in the Dominican Republic.

***

SS Daniel Leonardo, a switch-hitter listed at 5'9, 157 lb. He'll turn 18 on August 28th.

***

SS Gregory Munoz, also listed as a shortstop, a 5'9" 160 lb. LH bat. He turned 19 years old last February.

***

OF Yerald Martinez, a 17-year-old RH bat listed at 6'2", 180. He won't turn 18 until December 3rd.

***

There may be other signings, those are the listed ones for now. It's also just a bit too early to know exactly which 2012 DSL Brewers will debut in either Maryvale or Helena.

When we know more, we'll let you know, of course.

Looks as though the following 2012 DSL Brewers were removed from the MiLB.com roster page for the 2013 squad during the overnight. That means these players will debut in Maryvale / Helena (or possibly a release or two).

LHP Brandol Perez

RHP Milton Gomez

RHP Junior Flores

RHP Jorge Ortega

LHP Juan Santiago - from a numbers standpoint and as a lefty, promising (also entering his age 22 season, though)

C Carlos Pena

2B Alejandro Mendoza

OF Francisco Castillo -- fun on the basepaths, deserving of the bump, turns 20 soon

OF Elvis Rubio

***

My goodness, does this mean Venezuelan RHP Gian Rizzo (who turns 20 in September) and his amazing numbers, will spend a 3rd year in the Dominican?

The Brewers have signed RHP Nelson Arguila (career stats) and assigned him to their Dominican Summer League roster.

Arguila originally signed with Boston prior to the 2011 season, but that contract was voided. He landed in Tampa's organization, and as his stats indicate, he worked strictly in relief with the DSL Rays in 2011 and 2012.

Listed at 6'0", 180, likely a hard thrower (35 walks in 39.1 innings).

Arguila is going to be 25 (!) in September, so the arm had better be mighty big.

This might be best listed as "hey, we have to fill the roster...".

Well it appears that he's not much of prospect or he's injured (as he's never pitched a full season), either way it's disappointing.

Here's an informative DSL Twitter conversation via the Brewers Player Development feed.

RHP Osmel Perez missed 2012, flashed promise as a 16-17 year old the prior two years. As the link indicates, he left baseball.

:) Well I think most people remember my love for DSL and Arizona Brewers so I had to do some digging. Couldn't believe when he told me Perez gave up baseball....so much talent I thought.

I also couldn't believe that one of the most dominant pitchers the last 2 seasons in the league, who is in a system in search of pitching prospects to step, was once again held back from coming over to Arizona. There has to be something we are missing on with Rizzo. Injuried, not have very good stuff, not ready maturity wise like some young DSL players, or etc. But how can you be the ace the past two seasons and still not get the bump? Rubio seemed extremely raw and like he could use an extra season in DSL but even he got moved up.

Gian Rizzo and Carlos Belonis where two I was really hoping for. It was nice to see Milton Gomez, Jorge Ortega, and Castillo all get moved up. Rubio while surprising, it's great he showed enough to get statewide!

Proud member since 2003 (geez ha I was 14 then)

FORMERLY BrewCrewWS2008 and YoungGeezy don't even remember other names used

The Brewers have signed 19-year-old Venezuelan Juan De Los Santos and assigned him to the DSL squad.

Milwaukee is currently listing the 5'11" RH bat as an OF.

Despite his young age, De Los Santos has already spent his age 17 and 18 seasons in the Nationals' system (career stats).

You'll notice the majority of JDLS' action has been at second base. The young man parlayed walks and HBP's to bump his 2012 average of .224 up to an OBP of .383.

As bkrause2 pointed out in Thursday's Link Report, two new DSL'ers, getting them daily now. Pro debuts for each:

Boanerges Nova, a 6'2", 170 lb. LHP - great name, good choice of throwing arm; turned 20 last February

Axel Cordero, a 6'4", 175 lb. RHP - will turn 22 next month, so old for a pro debut, but hopefully a worthy lottery ticket

For a player like Cordero, we have no way of knowing why he didn't earn a pro contract until this point, could be any number of legitimate reasons.

Dr. Theresa Miyashita, Assistant Professor & Program Director for the Athletic Training Education Program at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut, is currently in the Dominican Republic, and just visited the Brewers' training academy, as part of her research.

Here's my brief conversation with her via Twitter. Even if a future follow-up is only a few paragraphs, any of her observations and thoughts should prove to be insightful, and as you can read, she indicated she'll be kind enough to provide those findings.

In this tweet, she indicates the training room needs more, well, "room".

Thanks again, Dr. Miyashita!

RHP Osmel Perez missed 2012, flashed promise as a 16-17 year old the prior two years. As the link indicates, he left baseball.

Missed this when it was initially posted, but found a write up about him on the Power50 from a few years ago;

"Ladies and gentleman, we would like to present you with a future Brewers top 10 prospect by the name of Osmel Perez. The young Mr. Perez will be just 17 this season, and already features a 90-94 MPH fastball, a plus changeup and a good slider. He threw 28 2/3 mostly outstanding innings last summer in the Dominican Summer League and stands a decent chance at pitching in Arizona this summer. Look out world... it's Osmel!"

Makes you wonder why the kid would just up and quit. You have to wonder just what it was that made him decide at 18 years of age to hang it up.

With his age and stuff... ah, what could've been...

Hopefully all's well with him right now.
