Link Report for Fri. 7/5 - Tyrone Taylor's Clutch Grand Slam Saves Us From A Winless Organizational Night

Final: @Great Falls 7, Helena 1

Helena box score

Not much fun today. Zach Quintana got shelled again, allowing six runs on 11 hits and two walks in six innings while striking out just one. All of the the 2012 third-round pick's ratios so far this year are pretty terrible.

Nathan Orf doubled twice, and Omar Garcia and Jalen Harris also had two hits, while Garrett Cooper picked up another double.

Helena play-by-play

The line score will show that Quintana was doing okay until being tagged for four runs in the 6th, but he was playing with fire the previous inning as well:

Taylor's slam sends Rattlers past Kernels

Wisconsin rallies for 8-7 win at Cedar Rapids

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Tyrone Taylor heads for third after his seventh inning grand slam puts Wisconsin up 8-6 over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on July 5, 2013.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - Tyrone Taylor's seventh inning grand slam put the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers ahead to stay in an 8-7 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Taylor also doubled and drove in a total of five runs to bring the Rattlers back from a 6-2 deficit and snap a streak of seven straight losses to the Kernels.

It was not a good start for Wisconsin (35-45 overall, 6-9 second half). JD Williams hit a home run to lead off the bottom of the first inning to put the Kernels in front 1-0.

Cedar Rapids (52-31, 12-3) added to their lead in the third inning. Jhonatan Arias doubled with one out. Williams followed with an RBI triple. Wisconsin starter Leonard Lorenzo got the second out with a strikeout, but walked the next two batters to load the bases. Max Kepler made the Rattlers pay for the free runners with a two-run double for a 4-0 Cedar Rapids lead.

The top of the Timber Rattlers batting order rallied in the top of the fourth. Alfredo Rodriguez got on with an infield single. One out later Tyrone Taylor doubled to left-center to drive in Rodriguez. Later in the inning, Mike Garza singled to knock in Taylor and the Rattlers were down 4-2.

But, the Kernels answered with single runs in their half of the fourth and fifth. Williams singled in the run in the fourth. An error on a grounder off the bat of Adam Brett Walker with runners at the corners got the Cedar Rapids run home in the fifth for a 6-2 advantage.

Cedar Rapids gave Wisconsin a run in the top of the sixth inning. Michael Reed scored from second when Niko Goodrum missed a grounder to short off the bat of Victor Roache. That was just a start for Wisconsin.

In the seventh inning, Chris McFarland and Adam Giacalone singled with one out. But, they were still at first and second with two outs. Then, Rodriguez drew a walk to load the bases. Reed was next and he drew a four pitch walk from Kaleb Merck to force in a run and cut the Kernels lead to two runs.

Merck was replaced by left-handed All-Star reliever Steven Gruver to face Taylor with the bases loaded and two outs. Gruver got Taylor to swing and miss the first pitch. But, the Minor League Player of the Month for June in the Milwaukee Brewers organization did not miss the next pitch. Taylor crushed a line drive deep into the night over the wall in left for a grand slam and an 8-6 lead.

That bases loaded home run by Taylor was the first by a Timber Rattler since July 4, 2012. Chadwin Stang hit a grand slam in Cedar Rapids 366 days ago.

Martin Viramontes, who pitched around a pair of hits for a scoreless seventh inning, almost pitched around three walks in the bottom of the eighth. The Kernels had loaded the bases walks to the first, second and fourth batters of the inning. Viramontes got the second out with a strikeout of Kepler, who had been 4-for-4 to that point of the game.

Walker was next and sent a slow grounder towards short. The flip to second was late as Travis Harrison, the runner from first, beat the force play and Walker had made the score 8-7 with his infield single.

Viramontes got the next batter to ground out to first and kept the Rattlers up by a run.

Jono Armold entered in the bottom of the ninth inning and pitched a 1-2-3 inning, including a pair of strikeouts to close out the Rattlers win. Armold struck out Williams, who homered to stat the scoring back in the first inning, to end the game.

Harvey Martin, in his second appearance with the Timber Rattlers, picked up the win in relief. It was the first professional victory for the 2013 NCAA Division II Pitcher of the Year and Minnesota State, Mankato.

The Timber Rattlers continue their road trip with game one of a three game series against the Burlington Bees at Community Field on Saturday night. Eric Semmelhack (1-4, 4.18) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Pat Lowrey (3-5, 4.67) is set to start on the bump for the Bees. Game time is 6:30pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm.

HOME RUNS:

WIS:

Tyrone Taylor (7th, GRAND SLAM in 7th inning off Steven Gruver, 2 out)

CR:

JD Williams (7th, 0 on in 1st inning off Leonard Lorenzo, 0 out)

WP: Harvey Martin (1-1)

LP: Caleb Merck (1-1)

TIME: 3,193

ATTN: 2:54

Wisconsin Boxscore

Tyrone Taylor was quiet the last 2 games, but not tonight going 2-4 with a 2B and the SLAM! I'm happy JJ Cooper thinks he's making a case for the Brewers top 10. Chris McFarland who was the DH had the other multi-hit game for the Rattlers.

I wonder what Colby has been up to and if he got to see Martin Viramontes pitch tonight? Of the 4 pitchers the T-Rats used Jonathan Armold was the most effective sending the Kernels home with a 1-2-3 9th. Armolds ERA is now a ridiculous 1.77, his K/9 is over 9, unfortunately his BB/9 is up over 4, of course being a reliever the small sample alert applies.

Wisconsin Recap

The "other" Viramontes pitched tonight, it was an adventure for him in both innings as Chris mentioned in the game story.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds suffered a 6-2 defeat at the hands of the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds on Friday evening at Auto Zone Park.

Nashville (32-57) out-hit Memphis, 11-7, in the loss, but the Sounds gave up more than three runs to the Redbirds for the first time in the clubs' 10 meetings this season.

Following a 34-minute rain delay, Scooter Gennett (2-for-5) opened the contest with a single, giving him hits in each of his 10 games since rejoining the Sounds from Milwaukee. He is batting .410 (16-for-39) over that stretch.

Hainley Statia, a late addition to the Nashville lineup following the scratch of Khris Davis, gave the Sounds a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when he went yard for the first time in nearly two years, pulling a Carlos Martinez offering down the right field line for a solo homer. It was the utilityman's first longball in 619 at-bats, dating back to July 30, 2011.

The Sounds later loaded the bases with two outs in the frame against Martinez but the right-hander induced an inning-ending groundout from Blake Lalli to avoid further damage. Caleb Gindl (2-for-3) doubled during the inning to extend his longest hitting streak of the year to eight games (13-for-29, .448).

Memphis jumped into the lead in the fourth with back-to-back home runs off Zach Kroenke, who hadn't allowed a hit in the first three frames.

Greg Garcia started the Redbirds' fourth by reaching on a throwing error by Sounds shortstop Blake Davis. Two batters later, Jamie Romak belted his 17th home run of the year, a two-run shot to left that gave the home team a 2-1 advantage. Jermaine Curtis followed by driving a 2-0 Kroenke offering over the left field wall for his fourth big fly of the year, making it a 3-1 contest.

Martinez (3-2) earned the win for Memphis after holding the Sounds to one run on six hits in his 5 1/3 innings of work.

The Redbirds extended their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth on left fielder Chris Swauger's two-out, two-run double to left-center off Kroenke (4-11), who suffered his league-leading 11th loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits over six innings.

After Memphis added another run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly, Hunter Morris (2-for-5) led off the eighth inning with a solo homer to left off Mitchell Boggs, the slugger's team-leading 17th big fly of the year. Morris has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games at a .318 clip (14-for-44).

The Tennessee rivals square off again at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday night. Right-hander R.J. Seidel (1-3, 5.72) will man the bump for the Sounds and face Memphis southpaw Nick Additon (5-4, 4.36).

I really hope a reliever or 3 gets traded so Jesus Sanchez gets a chance to pitch in MLB.

I have a rather large man-crush on Tyrone Taylor right now. Is he a fall league candidate? Or do they usually reserve that for guys a little higher up in the food chain?

AUDIO HIGHLIGHTS

VIERA, Fla. - A crowd of 3,904 saw the Brevard County Manatees' nine-game home winning streak snapped on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium, in a 5-2 loss to the Daytona Cubs.

All seven runs were scored in the first three and a half innings, with both teams trading scores in the first and third frames.

Wes Darvill opened up the offense in the first, taking a pitch from Manatees' (8-6 second half, 45-36 overall) starter Damien Magnifico (0-1, 7.11 ERA) into the jet stream and over the right field wall. It was the only hit for Daytona (9-4, 44-35) in the opening inning though as Magnifico struck out each of the three other batters who came to the plate.

A trio of bloop singles brought in a run for the 'Tees in the bottom of the inning with Yadiel Rivera leading it off by tapping a soft chopper right in front of the plate. Rivera would move to second after Nick Ramirez took advantage of a huge gap down the left field line for a base hit. Ramirez finished the night by going 3-for-4.

Cameron Garfield then found just enough room over the head of first baseman Dustin Geiger for the ball to get down for another single to bring in Rivera and tie the game. Garfield also had a multi-hit night as he went 2-for-4.

Javier Baez and Geiger both scored in the third, with Baez taking advantage of a pair of stolen bases and a throwing error from Rafael Neda on his steal of third base, to come around and score. Chadd Krist later singled with two outs to bring in Geiger and give the Cubs a 3-1 lead.

Mitch Haniger's two-out double in the bottom of the inning drove in Ramirez and cut the deficit to 3-2, but that would be all the offense that the Manatees could put together.

Daytona added insurance in the fourth, with Magnifico leaving the game with an undisclosed injury after giving up a single and a walk to start the inning. Tyler Cravy came on in relief and allowed the two inherited runners to score on a two-out single by Geiger to make it a 5-2 game.

Magnifico took the loss, with all five Daytona runs falling on his shoulders. He surrendered five hits and three walks, while recording four strikeouts.

The Manatees did not draw a walk on Friday night against the Cubs, making it just the third time this season that Brevard County failed to take a free pass.

Beginning Saturday, New York Yankees superstar Alex Rodriguez is expected to continue his rehab stint as he joins the Tampa Yankees for the start of a three-game set against the 'Tees. First pitch on Saturday is set for 6:35 p.m.

Cody Scarpetta (0-2, 5.52) will start on the mound for the Manatees, while Scottie Allen (6-3, 4.11) will toe the rubber for Tampa.

Jones works scoreless inning in debut

Former NFL draft pick returns to competitive action for Reds

Two months after the 2010 NFL draft, Jones suffered a broken left fibula, tibia and heel in a car accident that effectively ended his football career. He persisted for two years, but after workouts with the Giants, Eagles and Saints, he returned to baseball. He'd been taken by the Astros in the 13th round of the 2007 Draft and again by the Brewers in the 50th round in 2010.

Morris powers Voyagers past Helena Brewers

by Jesse Geleynse, Great Falls Tribune Sports Writer

Great Falls Voyagers outfielder Jacob Morris was once a high school state track qualifying sprinter.

But it doesn’t matter how fast you can run when the ball goes over the fence.

Propelled by Morris’s sixth-inning grand slam, the Voyagers snapped a brief two-game losing streak with a 7-1 victory over the Helena Brewers before 1,082 fans at Centene Stadium Friday.

“It felt awesome off the bat,” Morris said. “This game is about making adjustments and that’s what I’ve been working on every day. It felt good.”

Friday was a breakout game for the 24th-rounder from the University of Arkansas. Morris finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs to double his season hit total to six.

“Me and (hitting coach) Charlie (Poe) have been kidding each other that (Morris) is due to hit one really hard and really far,” Voyagers manager Pete Rose Jr. said. “His at-bats have been getting better. These kids come in and work their tails off every day. I tip my hat to them and I tip my hat to Charlie.”

Tyler Shryock added a pair of RBI singles and Corey Thompson drove in a run as the Voyagers climbed back to .500 at 8-8. First-place Helena slipped to 9-7.

Jose Bautista (2-1) was outstanding for the third straight start. Bautista struck out four and scattered five hits while allowing one run in five innings.

“Now we’re kind of seeing what we saw in extended (spring training) and I got to see little bit last year before he got hurt and went back,” Rose said of Bautista. “He (throws) a good pace. He keeps the infielders and outfielders into the game. He’s not slow. He gets the ball and he throws.”

Bautista also picked off two runners in the top of the third. Helena appeared to go on the southpaw’s first movement, a trait for which Rose said the Brewers are notorious.

“(Helena) is pretty aggressive,” Rose said “They’ve got some base stealers and know what they’re doing. They’re known to run and steal some bases.”

The Voyagers led 2-1 when Morris deposited his shot over the fence in left-center. Thompson added a two-out RBI single in the seventh to give the game its final tally.

Helena took the early lead when Garrett Cooper led off the second with a double down the right field line and scored on Jalen Harris’s two-out RBI single for a 1-0 lead.

The Voyagers answered in the bottom of the third. Morris singled and scored one out later on an RBI single by Shryock to tie the game. Shryock later added an RBI single in the fifth to give the Voyagers a 2-1 lead.

Matt Abramson and David Putman each threw two scoreless innings out of the bullpen to preserve the win for Bautista. Putman struck out five of the final six hitters he faced.

“Abramson came back and threw the ball well again and Put came out and was solid again,” Rose said. “It was a total team effort and that’s what you’re going to need on a nightly basis to win a ballgame.”

Morris, Thompson and Shryock all finished with three hits and Adam Engel added two for the Voyagers, who out-hit the Brewers 13-8. Omar Garcia, Nathan Orf and Harris each had two hits for the Brewers.

The Voyagers have two more games remaining against Helena on the current homestand before their first off day, which precedes their first South Division road trip. Playing 18 games in as many days is an adjustment for the players who come directly from college, but the excitement of professional baseball seems to outweigh the fatigue thus far.

“I’m just getting used to playing every day,” Morris said. “Sometimes in school we’d play five times a week, but playing every single day is a little adjustment. Once I get my legs under me, which I think I have, we’ll be ready to rock.”

Notes… The series continues tonight at 7. David Haselden (2-1, 1.59 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Great Falls while Anthony Banda (0-1, 5.63 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Helena

The Helena Independent Record puts together notes for road games --

Big sixth inning helps Voyagers pound Brewers

Behind a four-run sixth inning, the Great Falls Voyagers beat the Brewers 7-1 Friday night at Centene Stadium, halting Helena’s two-game win streak.

The Voyagers pounded 13 hits, led by right fielder Jacob Morris’ 3-for-4 performance. Morris was responsible for a grand slam in the sixth inning that broke the game wide open. Great Falls shortstop Tyler Shryock was perfect in his first three at-bats and finished 3 for 5 with a double and two runs batted in. Voyagers first baseman Corey Thompson also had a three-hit night, as the hosts rode their offensive onslaught and also took advantage of four Helena errors.

The Brewers drew first blood in the second inning. Infielder Jalen Harris stroked a two-out RBI single that scored Garrett Cooper, who reached on a double. But Great Falls responded with a run of its own an inning later, on Shryock’s line-drive RBI single. Shryock also had the go-ahead run in the fifth frame.

The Brewers, who remain in first place in the Pioneer League North Division, finished with eight hits but struggled to get timely ones. They were just 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position and left eight men stranded.

Helena second baseman Nathan Orf was 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles to lead Helena, which also got multi-hit games from Harris (2 for 4, RBI) and center fielder Omar Garcia.

Brewers starting pitcher Zach Quintana took the loss after giving up six earned runs on 11 hits, walking two and striking out one. The 19-year-old went six innings in his fourth start of the season before being relieved by Tyler Linehan, who finished out the game and allowed a run on two hits.

Voyagers pitchers posted 10 strikeouts, led by reliever David Putman. Putman fanned five in just two innings of work. Matt Abramson threw two innings of no-hit ball in relief, and starter Jose Bautista (2-1) earned the win. He gave up six hits and a run through five innings, walked three and struck out four.

Helena faces Great Falls again on the road today, with first pitch slated for 7:00 PM (8:00 Central).

Southpaw Anthony Banda is scheduled to start for the Brewers. He is looking for his first win after starting the season 0-1.

AZL Brewers Box Score

We had noted Austin Ross' rough first inning earlier, he did come back out for a scoreless 2nd frame.

After mustering only one run on five singles in their previous game, the A-Crew could only produce three hits (one Francisco Castillo double) and two walks (both by Elvis Rubio) here. Just-turned 18-year-old 2nd rounder Tucker Neuhaus is 2-for-his-last-23 but is staying positive.

Another clean defensive effort in the desert, good.

Just-turned 20-year-old Venezuelan RHP Jorge Ortega remains one to keep an eye on, but neither his strikeout nor ground ball rates have been overly impressive despite good numbers otherwise in the DSL and now in Maryvale.
