Instant replay

This is not just in reference to the crappy call in the game tonight but in reference to this subject as a whole. Why can't there be an option for instant replay put in play for baseball. The umps are human, yes. The errors that they make sometimes change the outcomes of the games though! How about one "challenge" per game per team? That wouldn't slow the game down too much...

 

There would obviously have to be rules about what could be challenged such as foul balls (chalk line and foul pole), caught balls, tagging up infractions, foul tips...etc.

I think instant replay is long overdue in baseball, where the calls are often blown due to closeness, being out of position, and sometimes just ego preventing them from admitting they made a mistake.

the only thing it may ever be used for is for homeruns. the 3 hour game is too long to put in instant replay, plus baseball has a certain "human element" to it...

The Brewer announcers have called the home plate umpire Brian Gorman all night. He is umping at 1st. Wasnt there some way to email the booth?

The umpires' egos are too big to allow the scoreboard to even show "close" plays. It will take a lot of work to allow them to actually look at the replay and change their ruling. They are like the Pope, they are infallible and any suggestion otherwise would destroy the institution.

Screw their egos! Why not get the calls right in the billion-dollar business that is a childs game. Each call they blow could cost a team millions in playoff revenues. Sure, it is a 162 game season but every single game counts.

And I'm with those who think the human element is too important to the nature and ugly beauty of the game to bring in instant replay, despite what I perceive as a lot of benefits.

Bases loaded, 1 out, Miller fouls off a ball with 2 strikes, it bounces off the ground and into the catchers mitt and they called it strike 3. Home plate umpire didn't see it hit the ground and didn't ask for help so no other umps can speak up.

I found this topic from July, so I am reviving it because of Chipper Jones's comments...

 

If you didn't see or read what he said, he was complaining about the balls and strikes the other day. He said it's getting ridiculous and Questec needs to be brought in right away to fix the problem.

 

The comment made me think about using technology in general to get calls correct. I think I am against using Questec in games. It should be used by umps after games to see where they messed up so they can become more consistent. However, I think replay should be used on close plays in the field, but keep it limited like football does. Baseball is the only major sport that does not implement some type of replay in their games. Basketball uses it on a limited basis, but at least they have it. Why not use it on a close play at a base or to determine a home run? If the umpires' egos are at issue, tell them to leave. MLB has already called the bluff of the umpires (when a whole bunch quit), so they are not irreplaceable. The other argument is it would add time to an already long game. If you look at football, most pro games start at noon. When do they end? A lot of them don't end until 3:15-3:30...over 3 hours. I'd venture to say that most baseball games are shorter than 3 hours.

Having a system there to give the ump some kind of metric to base consistancy I'm totally ok with. As long as it's not used for game calling, but if the metrics can assist the ump into calling a more stable strike zone I'm all for it. Perhaps some kind of pay grade system can be implemented to give the Umps a bigger incentive to call a consistent game. I'm not saying penalty but perhaps a bonus if an ump calls a game with 98% strike zone accuracy. (Aka what he called a ball once stays a ball, what he calls a strike once stays a strike).

 

As far as replay, I'm not to sure about it. Some plays go our way, some don't. Remember the prince semi truck encounter at home plate? He was called safe, but was clearly out the ball came out of the mit after he was tagged.

 

Does anyone have insight into how the Umps are audited? Are they reviewed after every game like NFL reffs are? Showing where they screwed up and given a grade?
