This and that:

Former Brewer Carlos Corporan his cleanup for the 'Stros Friday night. Just a statement on the 'Stros, and good for Carlos.

***

Was hoping for good bloodlines, but -- Marlins super-promising big-league OF Marcell Ozuna and Brewers rookie baller Ruben Ozuna apparently aren't brothers, despite both hailing from Santo Domingo in the D.R. Marcell is almost exactly nine months older, but worlds apart.

Maybe they're cousins, in a Brewers Christian "not Vladimir" Guerrero kind-of-way.

Final: Huntsville 7 Tennessee 2

The Huntsville Stars received another strong start en route to a 7-2 victory Saturday night in Kodak, Tennessee. This time it was Taylor Jungmann giving the Stars another quality start. Jungmann (4-5, 4.82) worked 6 innings allowing 2 runs, both earned, on 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 6. Of the 90 pitches Taylor threw, 56 were for strikes. Jungmann posted a 5 ground out to 5 fly out ratio. Both runs scored on a 5th inning home run. When Jungmann went on the disabled list, he was 1-4 with a 7.89 ERA. Since coming off, he's 3-1 with a 2.16 ERA. The rest seems to have really help Taylor out.

The Stars bullpen put up 3 scoreless innings of relief tonight. Santo Manzanillo had the 7th and allowed nothing and struck out 1. Left hander Thomas Keeling was next, working a clean 8th while striking out one. Casey Medlen worked the 9th and also allowed nothing.

Huntsville Box Score

The Huntsville offensive attack was led by Kentrail Davis tonight. Davis went 4-5 with a triple, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Davis has now scored 32 runs to lead the Stars and is 5th overall in the Southern League. The other big contributor was Mike Walker. Walker was on base 4 times, 3 times via base on balls, once with a single. His 4th inning single was huge. It came with 2 outs and with 2 strikes and it drove in the Stars first 2 runs on the night. Nick Shaw snapped an 0-14 skid with a single in the 3rd. Shaw also drew a walk, scored a run, and drove in a run. Catcher Adam Weisenburger was activated from the disabled list and had the Stars other extra base hit tonight, a double in the 9th. Jason Rogers, Hector Gomez, and Ozzie Chavez each collected a single as well. Brock Kjeldgaard reached base twice via walks, scored a run and drove one in. Stars pitcher Taylor Jungmann also helped himself out with a perfectly executed safety squeeze in the 6th to drive in a run.

Davis, Jungmann Carry Stars to Victory

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

On Saturday night, the Huntsville Stars won their second consecutive game, beating the Tennessee Smokies by a score of 7-2 at Smokies Park.

For the second game in a row, it was a pitchers duel early on. Through three innings, Stars starter Taylor Jungmann and Smokies starter Alberto Cabrera kept the ballgame scoreless and combined to give up just three hits.

However, in the top of the fourth, the Stars began a streak where they would score at least one run in each of the next five innings.

Huntsville third baseman Mike Walker got things started by delivering a two-out, two-run single to score outfielders Kentrail Davis and Brock Kjeldgaard make the score 2-0.

One inning later, an RBI groundout from first baseman Jason Rogers put the Stars up by three. For Rogers, the run batted in was his league-leading 40th of the season.

After Jungmann surrendered a two-run homer to Smokies second baseman Airsmendy Alcantara to cut the Stars lead to one in the bottom of the fifth, the Stars offense was able to get both those runs back in the next half inning. With runners at second and third and one out, Jungmann helped out his own cause by delivering an RBI safety squeeze to make the score 4-2. One batter later, an RBI fielders choice by second baseman Nick Shaw put the Stars back up by three.

As for their final two insurance runs, Huntsville got a sac fly from Kjeldgaard in the seventh and an RBI single from Davis in the eighth to make the score 7-2. The hit for Davis was his fourth of the night, as he paced a Huntsville offense that cranked out double-digit hits (10) for the first time this series.

En route to improving to 4-5 on the year, Jungmann gave up just two runs on three hits in six innings of work. For the Brewers second ranked prospect (per MLB.com), the quality start was his fourth in a row, and his six strikeouts on the night were a season-high.

Aside from Jungmann, relievers Santo Manzanillo, Thomas Keeling and Casey Medlen each came through with a scoreless inning of work to close out the game.

With the victory, the Stars have won the last two straight against the Smokies after dropping five of the first six games in their matchup this season. Huntsville will attempt to win their third consecutive series with a victory on Sunday.

The Stars and Smokies will play game four of their five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium on Sunday. Huntsville will send RHP Andy Moye (2-5, 4.76 ERA) to the bump to square off against Tennessee LHP Eric Jokisch (3-3, 3.47 ERA). First pitch is at 2:00 PM (1:00 Central).

AUDIO: Hunter Morris Two-Run HR

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Albuquerque Isotopes defeated the Nashville Sounds by a 3-2 margin in front of 8,301 fans on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium.

The defeat was the league-leading 12th one-run loss of the year for Nashville (13-34).

Outfielder Khris Davis went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles to account for three of the Sounds' four hits in the contest and first baseman Hunter Morris his team-leading ninth home run of the year in the ninth to help Nashville avoid suffering its fifth shutout of the year.

It was a pitchers' duel between the night's starters as both hurlers worked quality starts.

Albuquerque right-hander Matt Magill (1-0) earned his first victory of the year by working six scoreless frames. He held the Sounds to a pair of hits (two Davis doubles) while walking three batters and striking out eight batters.

Sounds starter R.J. Seidel (0-2) took a hard-luck loss after striking out a career-high nine batters while allowing only one run on three hits over six innings of work. The lone blemish on his evening's work was an Alex Castellanos home run.

Castellanos broke up a scoreless deadlock in the top of the sixth inning when he belted his sixth home run of the year, a two-out shot to right off Seidel.

The visitors added to their lead in the eighth, plating two runs against Kyle Heckathorn.

Brian Barden led off with a walk and former Sound Tony Gwynn Jr. drew a pinch-hit walk before Matt Angle faked a bunt before pulling back and slapping an RBI single down the right field line to make it a 2-0 contest. Elian Herrera followed with a well-executed safety squeeze bunt to bring home Gwynn from third.

Morris broke up the Albuquerque shutout bid in the home half of the ninth when he crushed a two-out, two-run homer to right-center off Isotopes closer Steve Ames. Davis, who had opened the inning with a single, also scored on the blast, which drew the Sounds within a run at 3-2. Ames then retired Stephen Parker on a lineout to secure the one-run victory and notch his fifth save of the year.

Sounds center fielder Josh Prince went 0-for-2 with a pair of walks on the night to snap his season-best nine-game hitting streak.

The teams continue the series with a 2:05 p.m. matinee on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Johnny Hellweg (2-4, 4.33) will take the hill for the Sounds to face Albuquerque right-hander Blake Johnson (4-2, 3.88).

Final: Clearwater (Phillies) 2, Brevard County 3

Mittelstaedt, 'Tees blast off on a walk-off

Brevard wins 14th one-run game of 2013 in 3-2 victory over Threshers

By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - T.J. Mittelstaedt once again made himself the hero with a mammoth blast with two outs in bottom of the ninth inning, securing a 3-2 walk-off for the Brevard County Manatees over the Clearwater on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium.

It was his second walk-off hit for Brevard County (27-21) this season, after smacking a two-out double on May 16 against the St. Lucie Mets.

The hit made a winner of Kevin Shackelford, who was the only man needed out of the bullpen after relievers had combined for 13.2 innings in the previous two games combined. Shackelford threw two scoreless frames with two hits allowed.

Maikel Franco gave Clearwater (23-25) the early lead in the fourth inning with a solo shot, his tenth long ball of the year.

In the bottom of the fourth, Cameron Garfield took advantage of a passed ball on a swinging third strike to reach first to lead off the inning. Nick Ramirez would then send a ball over the right field batting cages make it 2-1 in favor of Brevard County. Five of Ramirez's nine homers in 2013 have now come against the Threshers.

Clearwater was able to tie the game in the seventh, with each of the first four batters recording base hits and Cameron Perkins scoring on a Jonathan Roof RBI single.

That seventh inning was the final one for Manatees' starting pitcher David Goforth (4-4, 2.77), who did not factor into the decision for only the second time this year. Goforth turned in seven strong innings as he allowed only two runs on six hits. He struck out seven and did not issue a walk for the first time on the season.

The Threshers also only used a pair of pitchers, sending starter Mario Hollands out for 5.1 innings of two-run ball, with one of those runs being unearned. He scattered six hits, walked only one and recorded eight strikeouts.

Hollands was backed up by Ryan O'Sullivan, who went the final 3.1 innings and was charged with the loss after giving up the walk-off home run. It was one of only three hits he allowed.

Mitch Haniger tied a career high with three hits in just his third game with Brevard County, while Ramirez and Mittelstaedt each had two hits, including their respective homers.

Brevard's current seven-game home stand concludes on Sunday evening, with first pitch slated for 5:05 PM (4:05 Central) in the third of six straight games overall against Clearwater. Brooks Hall (2-3, 2.72) and Gabriel Arias (5-2, 2.22) will start on the mound for the Manatees and Threshers, respectively.

Brevard County Box Score

Big night for Mitch Haniger who was 3 for 4 with a double. Nick Ramirez was 2 for 4 and homered for the second straight night, his ninth of the season. T.J. Mittelstaedt also went ard for the Manatees as part of a 2 for 4 night. Greg Hopkins and Brandon Macias had the other BC hits. David Goforth had another fine outing, allowing just two runs over seven innings. Kevin Shackelford tossed two scoreless and earned the win.

Helisek shuts down Wisconsin

Peoria lefty goes seven scoreless & K's 7 in 6-0 win

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

PEORIA, IL - Kyle Helisek enjoys pitching against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. In April, the lefty allowed one run over 5-1/3 innings and struck out four. On Saturday night at Dozer Park, he tossed seven shutout innings and struck out seven to lead the Peoria Chiefs to a 6-0 win over Wisconsin. The Rattlers only got one runner to third base in the game as they lost their second straight game.

The Chiefs (24-22) got on the scoreboard first. Patrick Wisdom doubled with one out in the second inning. He went to third on a passed ball. Carson Kelly singled with two outs to drive in Wisdom for a 1-0 lead.

Peoria went up 2-0 on a Wisconsin miscue. Ildemaro Vargas doubled with one out. Alex Mejia was next and he sent a grounder into the hole at short. Shortstop Orlando Arcia tried to throw on the run to third to get Vargas, but the throw was wild and Vargas scored.

The Chiefs went up 3-0 in the fourth inning with more aid from the Wisconsin defense. Michael Swinson reached on an error, stole second, and went to third on a passed ball. Adam Ehrlich drove in Swinson with an RBI grounder.

The Timber Rattlers (21-23) had chances early. They had a pair of hits in the first inning and a pair of walks in the third inning. But, Helisek got into a groove after the second walk. He set down eleven in a row from the third inning to the seventh. Adam Giacalone and Parker Berberet broke up the streak with consecutive singles with one out in the top of the seventh. But, Helisek got a popup and a strikeout to end the Wisconsin rally.

Helisek went seven innings, allowed four hits, and walked two to go along with his seven strikeouts for his second win over the Timber Rattlers in 2013. He is now 4-1 on the season.

The Chiefs pulled away in the bottom of the seventh. There were two outs and none on when reliever Martin Viramontes walked the next three batters to load the bases. Wisdom singled to left on a 3-2 pitch to drive in two runs. Michael Swinson was next and he would single on a 3-2 pitch to drive in another run for a 6-0 lead.

The Rattlers got a hit from Orlando Arcia in the top of the eighth inning against reliever Michael Aldrete, but could make nothing of it. Aldrete closed out Wisconsin with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Game two of the series is Sunday night at Dozer Park. Damien Magnifico (4-0, 4.91) is on the hill for the Timber Rattlers as their starting pitcher on Sunday. Peoria plans to send Joe Cuda (2-2, 6.07) to the mound. Game time is 6:30pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm.

Khris Davis, who had opened the inning with a single, also scored on the blast, which drew the Sounds within a run at 3-2

Technically, Davis was removed from the basepaths on a Dayton Buller forceout, so Buller scored the run. It would get much too confusing, but somehow stats should reveal that Davis gets the credit for the run scored.

The Sounds' RHP R.J Seidel (out of LaCrosse) is in his age 25 season, but as a high school sign, he will earn minor league free agency after this season unless the Brewers add him to their 40-man roster. If nothing else, a really strong season starting games in the PCL should earn quite a bit of interest on the market, and as a 26-year-old this fall/winter, could net Seidel a contract in the $100,000 range (or more) if multiple teams show interest. So he definitely has quite a bit to pitch for.

Kentrail Davis is quietly having a very good year at Huntsville, sporting an OPS of .841 and an OBP >.400. Unfortunately he is struggling against LHP which is tempering my enthusiasm a bit, but the numbers against RHP are outstanding.
