Charlie Greene mentioned that Mike Guerreo's father is not doing well, thus Mike's absence. Our best wishes go out to Mike as well as his brother Sandy, the Brewers' minor league hitting coordinator, and the entire Guerrero family and circle of friends.

Epy Guerrero has passed away. During his Brewers tenure, the legendary scout signed Alcides Escobar.

More on his background - pretty amazing.

Since the Manatees are the organization's true sole playoff hopeful in the first half (yes, others still exist mathematically), Brevard's Dave Walkovic responded to our query:

The 1st half ends following the game on June 19th against Lakeland. The 1st tie breaker is win percentage and the 2nd is head-to-head, so it looks like either way we would lose the tiebreaker scenario against Dunedin.

(Dunedin will be playing two games less than the Manatees thanks to weather cancellations.)

So while Brevard is two games out in the standings, technically it's three, since Dunedin won the first-half season series, 5-4.

The Sea Cows need to finish a game up on Dunedin to win the first-half division title.

Not forgetting Daytona or Clearwater...

Final: Tennessee 2 Huntsville 0

The Stars came up on the short end of a pitchers duel in Kodak, Tennessee Thursday night as the Smokies defeated the Stars 2-0. Stars starter Jimmy Nelson (5-3, 2.98) was awesome tonight. The only blemish on his line was a 2 run 4th. Nelson's final line included 7 innings pitched, 2 earned runs on 4 hits, 1 walk, 1 HBP, 1 home run allowed, and 7 strikeouts. The 7 inning start was Nelson's longest of the season. Jimmy threw 98 pitches tonight, 68 for strikes and had a 7 ground out to 4 fly out ratio. He certainly deserved a better fate. Santo Manzanillo pitched a scoreless 8th, giving up a walk and striking out 1.

The game time of 2:21 was the quickest 9 inning game of the year for Huntsville. It was also the 5th time they have been shutout in 46 games.

Brock Kjeldgaard made another "web gem" type catch of a fly ball in the bottom of the 7th inning tonight. This is probably about the 3rd or 4th time this year he's made a catch similar to that. He's also had a handful of outfield assists this season. Considering he spent his first 2 years in the Brewer organization as a pitcher, the strides he's made as an outfielder, both offensively and defensively, makes you wonder where he could be had he started out there in the first place.

Huntsville Box Score

The Stars out hit the Smokies 6-4, but were unable to push any runs across tonight. Robinzon Diaz stayed red hot with 2 more hits tonight. Diaz now has an 8 game hitting streak which has seen him go 14-26 for a .538 average. He has been even hotter over his last 4 games going 9-14, a .643 average. Jason Rogers had the Stars lone extra base hit with his 9th inning double. Rogers now has 13 doubles on the year, good for 3rd best in the Southern League, to go with his league leading 9 home runs and 39 RBI's. Rene Tosoni, Mike Walker, and Shawn Zarraga had the other hits for the Stars.

Huntsville Play By Play

The Stars came close to breaking through in the 9th

Huntsville Top of the 9th

Pitching Change: Marcus Hatley replaces Brian Schlitter, batting 9th.

Kentrail Davis called out on strikes.

Jason Rogers doubles (13) on a fly ball to center fielder Rubi Silva.

Rene Tosoni walks.

Brock Kjeldgaard lines into a double play, second baseman Ronald Torreyes to shortstop Arismendy Alcantara. Jason Rogers doubled off 2nd.

The Stars will look to get back on track tomorrow night as they send Ariel Pena (3-3, 2.95) to the mound. Pena will look to continue his magnificent May. Game time is scheduled for 6:15 Central. Don't forget to join Alex Cohen for the pregame show at 6:00.

Also a very nice start for Jorge Lopez. From the looks of the box score he's been the definition of effectively wild. But the good thing is that he didn't get hit hard.... well he hasn't allowed a hit at all.

Out of the game now, but 6 innings, 7 K's, 5 BB's, ZERO hits. Nice outing to build some confidence. Hopefully they can hold on and get the kid a win.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Even Chris said he was all over the place, but it worked tonight. The K/9 is certainly right where we would hope, the rest not so much. He's making incremental improvements though and hasn't given up a long ball since the end of the April, unfortunately by saying that I probably jinxed him next time out *knocks on wood*.

Lopez unhittable for Timber Rattlers

Wisconsin right-hander strikes out seven over six innings

By Jonathan Raymond / Special to MLB.com

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/5/6/6/48426566/cuts/lopez480_mfftt4ni_po1mm6kh.jpg

Jorge Lopez has 25 strikeouts in 25 1/3 innings this year. (Ann Molica/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers)

When Milwaukee made Jorge Lopez a second-round pick in the 2011 Draft, they were taking a gamble on a converted shortstop who'd only been pitching for three years, a player with the athleticism to double as one of Puerto Rico's best volleyball prospects.

Lopez's bio, stats

It's been a work in progress turning Lopez into a professional pitcher for the Brewers, but on Thursday night, he gave a glimpse of what he can offer.

The lanky 6-foot-4 right-hander tossed six hitless innings for Class A Wisconsin, striking out seven and walking five to pick up his first victory as the Timber Rattlers topped the Quad Cities River Bandits, 7-4.

For Lopez (1-3), it was the second-longest start of his career and his deepest outing yet this season. And after surrendering 18 earned runs over 9 1/3 innings in his first three starts, the 20-year-old has yielded just seven in the last 16 innings spanning four outings.

"I'm really, really excited, because the last couple starts, my delivery is getting better. I'm confident with all my pitches," he said. "I feel like the last two starts, I am getting better. I had a couple walks, but that happens in this game."

The seven strikeouts were also a season high for Lopez, who has 25 punchouts in 25 1/3 innings this season. He sports an 8.88 ERA and 18 walks as well, but the 3.94 ERA he's managed to cobble together over his last four outings -- dropping his overall mark from the 17.36 tally it stood at on April 29 -- suggests he's starting to make the progress the Brewers are looking for.

"He's making big strides, from his first outing where he got roughed up a little bit, leaving pitches up in the zone, to now where his mound presence is better. He's trusting his stuff more," Rattlers pitching coach David Chavarria said. "It's just a confidence factor that he knows he belongs, and credit to him, he's putting the work in every day on it. That's the big part. Some guys have a little bit of success and they're feeling comfortable 'cause they had a good outing and they tend to sit back and coast, but this kid keeps working and working and working. We're real happy with his progress."

Lopez tossed just 12 innings in 2011 for the Rookie-level Arizona League Brewers after signing following the Draft. Last season, he pitched between the Dominican Summer League Brewers and back in the AZL, collecting a 5.06 ERA while striking out 46 and walking 22 in 48 innings.

His early results this year weren't ideal, but weren't surprising for a young arm trying to redevelop his delivery and mechanics while getting the most out of his raw stuff.

"Overall, we're trying to make his delivery more compact, more streamlined, where everything is going toward home plate, and of course, just trying to get him into a proper routine," said Chavarria. "It's a big jump for some of these kids when they come up from Arizona or wherever. We're working with them on trusting the process. It's gonna be bumpy at times, but that's basically just the normal stuff.

"Tonight it took a little bit for him to realize why we were taking him out. then he realized, but that's the look you want from a guy, to want to go out there and have the mentality to finish what he started. Tonight he had that look a little bit in his eye. It was a big stepping stone for him to build on."

Victor Roache, Milwaukee's No. 7 prospect, smacked his fifth homer, doubled, plated two and scored twice to lead the Wisconsin offense.

Lopez and early runs lead Rattlers to win

Rattlers build 7-0 lead as Lopez tosses six no-hit innings

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

DAVENPORT, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers gave Jorge Lopez a big early lead and the right-hander ran with it. Lopez struck out seven and walked five over six no-hit innings to lead the Timber Rattlers to a 7-4 victory over the Quad Cities River Bandits Thursday at Modern Woodmen Park.

Wisconsin (21-21) jumped to an early lead with two runs in the first inning. Alfredo Rodriguez drew a walk to start the game and Michael Reed reached on an error. Tyrone Taylor lined a double to left that scored Rodriguez and sent Reed to third. Later in the inning, Adam Giacalone drove in Reed with a sacrifice fly to left

The Timber Rattlers padded their lead with four runs in the top of the third inning. Rodriguez started the inning with a single. Reed, who tripled three times in Wednesday's game, tripled to right-center to drive in Rodriguez. Victor Roache made it 4-0 with an RBI double. Giacalone was next and his RBI single scored Roache. Later in the frame, Chris McFarland doubled to drive in Giacalone for a 6-0 advantage.

Roache made it 7-0 with a tape-measure home run down the left field line to lead off the Rattlers fifth inning. The home run was the fifth of the year for the slugging left fielder.

Lopez was wild at times as the five walks and two wild pitches that he was charged with happened in the first four innings, but he settled in to retire the final eleven of the final twelve batters he faced.

The bid for Wisconsin's third combined no-hitter since 2010 ended with the first batter in the bottom of the seventh inning. Terrell Joyce greeted Ryan Gibbard to the mound with a home run to right-center field. A walk to Rio Ruiz was followed by an RBI double hit by Ariel Ovando made the score 7-2. The Bandits had runners at the corners with one out, but Gibbard escaped the inning with back-to-back strikeouts.

Quad Cities (23-22) put the first two batters on in the bottom of the eighth on a walk and a single. Gibbard struck out the next two batters, but walked Ovando on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases. Roberto Peña was next and he doubled to left to drive in two runs. That made the score 7-4 and brought the tying run to the plate in the form of Austin Elkins, who had homered in Wednesday's game against Wisconsin. But, Gibbard got Elkins to fly out to center to end the inning.

Rodolfo Fernandez took over in the bottom of the ninth inning and worked a 1-2-3 frame to close out the game and earn his second save of the season.

The Timber Rattlers conclude their three game series with the River Bandits on Friday at Modern Woodmen Park. Preston Gainey (1-4, 6.66) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Quad Cities sends Lance McCullers (0-4, 1.72) to the hill. Game time is 7:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm.

Wisconsin Boxscore

I've gotten in the habit of waiting for Chris' post game blog as we tend to cover many of the same issues but he spins a vastly superior yarn and I'd rather let him tell the story. Unfortunately it's not up yet and as it is midnight I'm going to knock this post off and get to bed. Jorge Lopez' night doesn't need any more analysis given the game story, feature, and posts already in this thread. I'll only say don't excuse the walks away Jorge... but I'll definitely take it.

Victor Roache's HR left the stadium completely. Chris referred to it as a "moon shot" immediately after it was hit. After today's 2B and HR Roache is only hitting .223 but has a .750 OPS on the season... if he could develop any of kind of legitimate MLB hit tool he could be very exciting.

What's with Tyrone Taylor? All of his hits seem to come in his first couple of ABs per game, maybe he should just pretend every AB is in the first couple of innings. I wish there was a minor league game log on baseball-ref so I could easily look it up but I'd guess the vast majority of his hits have come in his first 2 ABs in a game. Gotta love the fact that a 19 year old CF is batting 3rd now though, and Tyrone also scored an OF assist tonight.

Orlando Arcia just got the night off and spent it coaching 1B, no reason for concern for those boxscore watchers out there.

Clint Coulter would have had his 3rd multi-game in a row if he wasn't robbed by a fantastic diving grab by the LF in his first AB. Clint committed his 8th error when he tried to basket catch a pop-up, pretty unorthodox for a C... he almost threw a ball away later but luckily the pitcher knocked it down. On a positive note he was 1 for 2 gunning would be base stealers.

The Reds' next stud pitching prospect Robert Stephenson profiled here.

MWL notes: Stephenson gains steam

I found this quote interesting as it seems to be the pitching coach norm around baseball:

"A lot of trial and error works with Robert," Fossas said. "I let him do things he wants to do, and when he doesn't see the success factor there, then he's a lot easier to coach, but that works with everybody. A player or a pitcher who is always a 'yes' person, who wants to always please the pitching coach or the scouts, is a guy who won't make it."

Hunter Morris is heating up, maybe someday he'll get over this slow start thing. He'll have a hard time getting serious consideration for the 1B job next year if he won't hit in ST.

Final: Palm Beach (Cardinals) 9, Brevard County 5

Brevard denied sweep of Palm Beach

By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees dropped a 9-5 decision to the Palm Beach Cardinals on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium, in a game that featured 12 runs in the first three innings and a rain delay of over an hour.

Brevard County (25-21) started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. T.J. Mittelstaedt walked to lead off the frame against Cardinals' starter Juan Bautista. With one out and Mittelstaedt on second, the newest Manatee, Mitch Haniger singled the left to put men on the corners. Haniger went 1-for-4 in his Brevard County debut.

Nick Ramirez then lifted a sacrifice fly to deep center field to plate Mittelstaedt and give the 'Tees the early lead. Cameron Garfield then crushed an RBI triple to right-center field to double the lead.

Palm Beach (18-28) responded with three runs in the top of the second inning on consecutive run scoring hits. After Matt Williams dribbled a ball into center field with two outs, Jesus Montero and Cesar Valera each hit RBI doubles. Nick Longmire then singled home Valera to give the Cardinals a 3-2.

The Cardinals' lead would be short lived however as Brandon Macias led of the bottom half of the second with a double down the right field line. Yadiel Rivera then singled to left field to plate Macias and tie the game.

Rivera advanced to second on the throw home and was balked over to third. Mittelstaedt gave Brevard County the lead right back with a sacrifice fly to center.

The seesaw battle continued in the third inning with rain clouds looming in the area. After 'Tees starter Jed Bradley walked the first two batters, Jonathan Rodriguez crushed a three-run homer to center field to give Palm Beach a 6-4 lead. Montero brought Willams home again with another two-out RBI hit that would end Bradley's night.

Bradley (3-2, 5.45) lasted just 2.2 innings and surrendered a career-high eight runs on eight hits. Matt Miller relieved Bradley and hit two consecutive batters and then walked Colin Walsh with the bases loaded to extend the Cardinals lead to 8-4. The fourth ball to Walsh was the final pitch before a 66 minute rain delay.

After play resumed, the team's traded runs. In the bottom of the seventh, Ramirez plated Mittelstaedt with an RBI single to right field, but that was as close as the Manatees would get.

Chad Pierce was the first man out of the bullpen after the lengthy rain delay. He pitched brilliantly as he allowed only one hit and struck out six in 4.1 innings.

The homestand will continue for the 'Tees as the Clearwater Threshers (23-23) come to Space Coast Stadium for a three-game series. Drew Gagnon (3-4, 5.40) will get the start for Brevard in Friday's opener, with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m.

Brevard County Box Score

Yadiel Rivera and Brandon Macias each went 2 for 4 for BC. Macias doubled and now has five hits in his last three games after a really slow start to the season. Mitch Haniger was 1 for 4, scored a run and recorded an outfield assist in his Manatees debut. As a prospect guy I'm really happy to finally have Haniger in Brevard, makes the games that much more interesting. Cameron Garfield had a triple. Cody Hawn singled and walked, as did Chadwin Stang. Garfield committed his fourth error of the season. Jed Bradley did not have a great night, allowing 8 runs on 8 hits over 2.2 innings. Matt Miller pitched to three batters, he hit two and walked the other. Chad Pierce pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed just one hit.
