Dave Bush in 2008 was a much much better pitcher than any of our 3/4/5/6 starting pitchers. His ERA was 4.18 that year with a 1.141 WHIP. He was much more similar to Lohse of '13 than any of our other guys

 

If you are going to compare the 2008 Brewers to the 2013 Brewers the 2008 team will win every time due to vastly superior pitching

 

2008 Brewers had Prince in a down year with 34 HR's and a .879 OPS which is vastly better than the production of this year's Brewers. Corey Hart being injury prone has to be factored into that as well.

 

Jason Kendall of 2008 and a 2.9 WAR (baseball reference), hit .246/.327/.651 and caught 151 games that year. Lucroy has real value on defense but I wouldn't say he is better defensively than Kendall was. Lucroy's WAR so far this year is a -0.1 (!), his OBP is .280 something. He is worse this year than Kendall was

I would agree that the starting pitching was much better, I would certainly take Sabathia over Gallardo, Sheets over Lohse, Bush over Estrada, Parra over Peralta and Suppan over whatever #5 from this year. Looking back I really don't like that bullpen though and they were lucky Torres had such a good final year.
