-Franklin Gutierrez grounds out, third baseman Stephen Parker to first baseman Blake Lalli.

-----------------------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------------------

He's only worked into the 6th inning in one of his nine starts so far this season. I'm really not sure how he can be taken seriously as a SP candidate at this point.

Final: Palm Beach (Cardinals) 2, Brevard County 4

Early homers send 'Tees to 4-2 win

Mittelstaedt, Hawn go deep; Suter victorious over Cards

By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - A pair of first inning homers helped the Brevard County Manatees to their third straight win over the Palm Beach Cardinals, 4-2 on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium.

After Manatees (25-20) starting pitcher Brent Suter (3-2, 3.23) allowed a run on two walks and a hit in the top of the first, the offense got behind him in the bottom of the inning.

Brevard's second leadoff home run of the season came off the bat of T.J. Mittelstaedt as he took the 2-0 offering from Palm Beach (17-28) starter Scott Gorgen and blasted it over the right-center field wall. Later on in the frame with two outs and one on, Cody Hawn would blast his seventh homer of the season down the right field line to give the 'Tees a 3-1 lead.

Following a rocky first inning, Suter would settle in and ended up allowing a total of five hits and three walks, while striking out six batters in six innings of work. He gave up just one run for the second consecutive outing.

Brandon Macias led off the fifth inning with a double and then scored two batters later on a single from Mittelstaedt to push the lead to 4-1. Both Macias and Mittelstaedt had two hits each for the Manatees.

Palm Beach made it interesting in the seventh, as Stephen Peterson walked two batters and allowed a hit to load the bases. Peterson also notched a pair of strikeouts, but was lifted in favor of Kevin Shackelford.

Shackelford would walk Stephen Piscotty to bring in a run, but left the bases loaded to prevent any further damage as he fanned Jonathan Rodriguez.

Tommy Toledo entered in the ninth and earned fourth save of the year to ensure the win, which put Brevard County a season-high five games over the .500 mark this season.

A four-game sweep of Palm Beach is on the line for Brevard County on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium, beginning at 6:35 p.m.

Southpaw Jed Bradley (3-1, 3.82) will toe the rubber for the Manatees. The Cardinals will make it a battle of lefties as they will send Ryan Sherriff (0-1, 2.70) to the hill.

Brevard County Box Score

Another good start for Brent Suter. Outside of one hiccup where he gave up six runs in five innings, he's been great all season. Tonight he went six strong innings, giving up just one run. Kevin Shackelford pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief and Tommy Toledo pitched another scoreless ninth for his fourth save. He's been very good in the closer's role. Wonder if he might keep the job when Harvey comes back.

T.J. Mittelstaedt led the offense with a 2 for 4 night. He smacked his third home run since joining the Manatees. Cody Hawn also homered for BC. It was his seventh of the season, tying him with Nick Ramirez for the team lead. Brandon Macias was 2 for 3 with a double. Cameron Garfield added a double, and Ramirez singled for the other Brevard hits. Ben McMahan was caught stealing and Macias was picked off.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

Rattlers rock River Bandits in eleven innings

Wisconsin scores seven runs in the eleventh for a 12-5 win at Quad Cities

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

DAVENPORT, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers seemed a bit angry that they had let a five run lead slip away at Modern Woodmen Park on Wednesday night. The Timber Rattlers led the Quad Cities River Bandits 5-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. The Bandits would rally to tie the game 5-5, but Wisconsin pulled away with a decisive seven run eleventh inning for a 12-5 win.

Clint Coulter put the Timber Rattlers (20-21) up in the second inning. The Rattlers catcher launched a two-run home run with two outs in the top of the second. The home run was the third of the season for Coulter and his first since April 13.

The Timber Rattlers stretched out their lead with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth. Michael Reed tripled, his second three-base hit of the game, with two outs in the top of the fifth to drive in Alfredo Rodriguez. An error on a grounder off the bat of Coulter let Victor Roache score from third base with two outs in the sixth. Later in the sixth, Rodriguez singled to center and Coulter scored from second for a 5-0 lead.

The River Bandits (23-21) got to Austin Blaski for a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Austin Elkins started the inning with a solo home run to right. Jordan Scott followed with a double. He stole third and scored on the play when the throw wound up in left field.

Those were the only two runs off Blaski in the game. The right-hander went six innings, allowed five hits, walked one, and struck out two. He turned the 5-2 lead over to the bullpen.

Quad Cities got to within a run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Taylor Mangum walked the first two batters he faced. He gave up a single to load the bases with no outs. Closer Taylor Wall took over for Mangum at that point.

Carlos Correa greeted Wall with a single to center that scored a run. Pinch hitter Brian Blasik grounded into a force out at third to drive in the run that made it 5-4. Wall would get out of the inning with that one run lead intact.

But in the ninth, the Bandits would tie the game. Roberto Peña blooped in a single just fair down the right field line to start the inning. He was replaced by pinch runner Ryan Dineen, who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. He was still at second with two outs. Then, Scott singled to center to drive in Dineen with the tying run.

Neither team scored in the tenth.

Tyrone Taylor, who entered the game as a pinch runner for Parker Berberet in the top of the eighth inning, started the Wisconsin eleventh with a walk. He stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Coulter slammed a single through the middle of the drawn in infield to drive in Taylor with the tie breaking run. The Rattlers were just getting warmed up in the frame.

Rodriguez followed with a double into the left field corner. Coulter, who was running on the play, scored easily from first. That knocked River Bandits reliever John Neely out of the game.

Jose Sermo greeted Richard Rodriguez with an RBI double to right to make it 8-5. Sermo would be caught stealing and Rodriguez got the second out of the inning.

Then, Reed made a little history. The Rattlers right fielder tripled to right-center for his third three-bagger of the night. Reed became the first Timber Rattler and only the fourth player in Midwest League history to have three triples in a game. It's a feat that had not happened since Jason Smith did it for the Rockford Cubbies on September 2, 1998.

Mitch Haniger followed with an RBI double to drive in Reed. Victor Roache drew a walk. Adam Giacalone singled to drive in Haniger for a 10-5 lead. Taylor, the batter who started the inning, doubled to right to drive in both Roache and Giacalone and the Rattlers were up 12-5.

Blasik had to come in to get the final out of the inning.

Jono Armold, who had pitched a scoreless tenth, worked a scoreless eleventh to nail down the Rattlers extra inning victory. The win was the first of Armold's professional career.

Game two of the series is set for Thursday night at Modern Woodmen Park. Wisconsin has Jorge Lopez (0-3, 11.64) is their scheduled starting pitcher. Quad Cities plans to send Jamaine Cotton (0-0, 1.64) to the mound. Game time is 7:00pm. Tune in for the Miller Lite Pregame Show on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting at 6:40pm.

Wins like this make me

! I'm sorry I didn't get home until after the game was over as I'm sure it was an enjoyable listen.

It's unfortunate that every scout thinks Clint Coulter won't stick behind the plate, though when you watch the games it becomes rather obvious why. I had posted earlier in the year that perhaps WI was too aggressive an assignment given everything he was trying to work on at once. Personally speaking I would rather they move him now, find a position he can excel at, and let his bat determine his future. I had also mentioned that he was starting to hit the ball with authority again, and what a game to get off the HR schneid.

I find Jonathan Armold intriguing, and he's yet to give up an ER this season, but as I've only made it to one game in person (I've watched every televised broadcast), I'm not sure what he's throwing or how hard he throws. I do have something like 6 tickets from rain/snowouts to redeem yet so I'll be hoping to see him pitch in the near future. His walk rate is poorish, but he's only thrown 8.1 innings so all the usual yip yap about small sample size applies. The only FB velocity I could find on him was 79 MPH, from his junior year of HS, at a PG event.

Hopefully Taylor Wall continues to pitch well and sticks with the organization, I would hate for MH to lament over the loss of another promising LHP who latches on and finds success elsewhere.

Michael Reed's 3 triple performance pushed his OPS to .830, not too shabby, though he's yet to poke one over the fence.

Wisconsin Recap

The game winning rally, If you didn't catch it in the game story you'll notice that Tyrone Taylor had a BB and then a 2B in the same inning after coming off the bench to pinch run earlier in the game. I'm digging the young hitters in WI.

Rattlers' Reed legs out three triples

Wisconsin outfielder Michael Reed considers speed one of the biggest parts of his game, but he surprised even himself on Wednesday night.

The Brewers prospect collected three triples, drove in one run and scored another as the Class A Timber Rattlers outlasted the Quad Cities River Bandits, 12-5, in 11 innings.

The triples tied the Midwest League record, set in 1950 by Andy Smith of the Mattoon Indians -- then of the Mississippi-Ohio Valley League -- and matched by Quincy Giants teenager Oscar Flores in 1960 and Jason Smith of the Rockford Cubbies in 1998.

"It's awesome. It's actually the first time," Reed said. "I've had two [in a game] in high school, but this is a wonderful blessing. The Lord gave me the chance to play baseball in the first place and it's a blessing to be part of history."

Selected in the fifth round of the 2011 Draft out of Leander High School in Texas, the 20-year-old laced a two-out triple to right field off starter Jordan Jankowski in the third inning, then went the other way again in the fifth off Mitchell Lambson to score Alfredo Rodriguez.

In the 11th, Reed pulled Richard Rodriguez's offering to left field for his record-tying third triple before scoring on Mitch Haniger's double.

"The first at-bat, he threw me a lot of off-speed curveballs, so I went to the plate with that in the back of my mind," Reed said of his first triple. "I was sitting fastball but reacting to the curveball. He left [a curveball] up in the zone and I took it the other way.

"I know if I hit it in the right-center field gap, there's a possibility that I can get three bases. It's a big park. The second triple was a line drive over the right fielder's head and the third was over the center fielder's head. The first one, I went in sliding. The second and third, I got in standing up."

Reed, who plays right field and hits second in the Timber Rattlers lineup, raised his average to .311 and more than doubled his triples total from two to five. After totaling three triples in 76 games in his first two years in the Minor Leagues, he's tied for third in the Midwest League behind Bowling Green's Andrew Toles (eight) and Cedar Rapids' Jorge Polanco (six).

"[My teammates] were excited for me and they congratulated me," said Reed, who missed time for Rookie-level Helena last season after he was hit by a pitch on the right index finger. "I have great teammates and they made me feel good about it.

"I consider myself a fast guy. I have pretty good speed and speed is a big part of my game. But tomorrow is another day. I can enjoy this through the night, but when I step on the field tomorrow, it's a new day. I can't get complacent."

Brewers No. 9 prospect Clint Coulter smacked a two-run homer in the second, then delivered an RBI single and scored in the 11th for Wisconsin. Rodriguez also had three hits, drove in two runs and scored twice.

Sounds Drop Third Straight In Tacoma, Fall 5-4

Late Nashville Rally Comes Up Short

Nashville Sounds

TACOMA, Wash. - A late rally came up just short for the Nashville Sounds on Wednesday evening at Cheney Stadium as they dropped their third straight game to the Tacoma Rainiers, losing by a 5-4 margin.

The loss was the PCL-leading 11th one-run defeat suffered by Nashville (12-32) this season.

Rainiers starter Andrew Carraway (5-1) stifled the Sounds to earn a quality start victory. The right-hander held Nashville to one run on six hits while matching his season high with six strikeouts over 6 2/3 frames.

The Sounds broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning on excellent hustle by Hainley Statia on the basepaths. After Statia drew a two-out walk from Carraway, he was moving on the hurler's 3-2 offering to Josh Prince, which the Nashville shortstop blooped to center for a single. Statia kept going all the way to the plate and scored the night's first run on the play (audio). The single extended Prince's season-best hitting streak to seven games, the longest active run by any Sounds player.

Tacoma knotted the score with a two-out run-scoring hit of its own in the home half of the frame. After Tyler Thornburg allowed the first two batters to reach on a hit by pitch and single, he retired the next two batters before allowing a game-tying single off the bat of Franklin Gutierrez.

The Rainiers took a 5-1 lead in the sixth with four runs off Thornburg, chasing the right-hander from the contest in the process.

After Tacoma loaded the bases with no outs against the right-hander, Thornburg got a grounder from Carlos Triunfel that resulted in a force out at the plate before Jesus Sucre delivered a go-ahead, two-run double. Abraham Almonte greeted Sounds reliever Tim Dillard with an RBI infield single and Nick Franklin followed with a sac fly to up the home team's lead to four.

Thornburg (0-6) remained winless on the year, taking his sixth loss after being touched for five runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out eight batters during his 97-pitch outing.

Nashville got three runs back in the top of the eighth against Rainiers reliever Logan Bawcom to pull back within a run at 5-4. However, the Sounds were unable to advance the potential tying run past second with only one out in the frame.

Blake Lalli got things started when he cut the deficit to 5-3 with an opposite-field two-run double to left-center. Scooter Gennett (single) and Caleb Gindl (walk) scored on the two-bagger (audio). Hunter Morris followed Lalli with an infield single to put runners on the corners with one out for Nashville. Bobby LaFromboise took over on the hill for Tacoma and was greeted by an RBI single off the bat of Stephen Parker (2-for-4) (audio). The lefty escaped the jam without further damage by retiring Dayton Buller on a flyout before catching Statia looking at a called third strike to end the frame.

Tacoma looked to add an insurance run in the home half of the eighth against Michael Olmsted, but Statia made a strong throw to the plate from right field following a Sucre single to nail Triunfel at the dish as he attempted to score from second on the play.

LaFromboise retired the Sounds in order in the ninth to close out the victory for Tacoma and earn his second save.

The Sounds will look to avoid a sweep when the teams wrap up the four-game set with a 9:00 p.m. CT finale on Thursday evening. Left-hander Zach Kroenke (1-6, 5.75) will make the start for the Sounds to face Tacoma right-hander Jeremy Bonderman (2-3, 3.79).

Nashville Box Score

Tyler Thornburg fanned eight, got six groundouts (no fly balls), walked only one (one HBP), yet finishes with another mediocre-to-poor line - there's just no chance at any real innings length out of him.

OF Max Walla tweets he's on his way to Wisconsin after recovering from a broken left hand. The 22-year-old will formally begin his 5th pro season, a 2nd round New Mexico high school pick in 2009.

Another tease that a Mitch Haniger promotion could be forthcoming? The Rattlers will need to make a corresponding move.
