Audio from Salt Lake — “Zach (Kroenke) is Back”

Today’s interview is with the Sounds’ starter and winner from Saturday night, Zach Kroenke. The southpaw discusses his and the team’s rough start to the season, his solid outing last night (6 1/3 shutout innings), his first season in the Brewers system having signed as a minor league free agent in November, and his years with the D’Backs and pitching at hitter-friendly Reno.

From the at-least-he-won't-be-20-until-July Dept.:

Clint Coulter has more passed balls and errors (21 combined, 15/6) than hits (18).

Actually, considering Saturday was his first multi-hit game of the season (game 28), a .184 batting average is seemingly respectable - you'd think the math would have it lower just given that circumstance.

Still a fan, it's just that Clint is still so raw, and not in a "RAW is JERICHO" kind of way, WWE fans...

Final: Brevard County 1, Dunedin (Blue Jays) 3

Brevard falls 3-1 in series finale at Dunedin

By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees

DUNEDIN, Fla. - Yet another battle of quality starting pitchers took place on Sunday afternoon at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium, but unfortunately the Brevard County Manatees were on the short end of the battle as they fell 3-1 to the Dunedin Blue Jays.

Dunedin starting pitcher Scott Copeland turned out eight innings of three-hit ball, notching seven strikeouts with only one walk for the win. His streak of 21 consecutive batters retired, including 13 from his last start, came to an end when Chadwin Stang singled with two outs in the third inning.

One of the three hits that he allowed was a T.J. Mittelstaedt home run to lead off the sixth inning and give the Manatees (22-20) a 1-0 lead. The homer accounted for the only run Brevard County would score against either Copeland or John Anderson, who came on for a perfect ninth inning and earned a save in his first outing of the year.

Dunedin (24-16) answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth to ensure themselves a three-game cushion over the Manatees in the FSL North standings.

Brevard County starting pitcher Drew Gagnon (3-4, 5.40) had faced just three batters over the minimum through the first five innings, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth.

He opened the inning by hitting Jon Berti with a curveball, then allowed a single and a walk to load the bases. Jon Talley's sacrifice fly enabled Berti to score and tie the contest. A Marcus Knecht single gave Dunedin a 2-1 lead and spelled the end of Gagnon's start, after he allowed four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings.

Gagnon was charged with his third and final run when a ground ball gave Andy Burns enough time to get home from third base. Matt Miller, the first reliever out of the bullpen, finished the sixth with the groundout and a strikeout and then only allowed a walk in the seventh.

After recently being activated from the disabled list, Tyler Cravy also took the mound for the first time since April 27 and pitched a perfect eighth with one strikeout.

The Manatees will return home to Space Coast Stadium to open a seven-game home stand on Monday at 6:35 p.m., with the first of four games against the Palm Beach Cardinals (17-25).

Brevard's David Goforth (3-4, 3.05) will take the mound looking for third straight win. He has allowed just one earned run in his last two starts, over a span of 14 innings of work.

Travis Miller (0-6, 4.71) will take the hill for Palm Beach as he will be looking for his first win of the year. Miller has not thrown more than five innings in any of his seven starts this season and has a 6.39 ERA in three May starts.

Brevard County Box Score

Drew Gagnon pitched well for the first five innings. He ran in to a little bit of trouble in the sixth, but still only allowed four hits. Matt Miller and Tyler Cravy combined for 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. T.J. Mittelstaedt's second home run of the season turned out to be the only run of the game for the Manatees. Rafael Neda and Chadwin Stang each singled for the only other BC hits. Stang stole his 11th base of the year.

Final: Montgomery 3 Huntsville 0

Despite a strong start from Taylor Jungmann, the Biscuits were able to break through and defeat the Stars 3-0 Sunday Afternoon. Jungmann (3-5) went 7 innings, allowing 3 runs, all earned, on 7 hits and 1 walk with no strikeouts. Taylor posted a 14-3 ground ball to fly ball ratio and of the 97 pitches he threw, 62 were for strikes. This is the 3rd straight strong outing for Taylor after his precautionary stint on the disabled list earlier this month.

"Thunder" Dan Meadows made his season debut at Huntsville in the game today. He pitched 2 scoreless innings, didn't allow a hit or walk, but did hit 2 batters. Meadows, working his way back up the ladder as a side-armer now, had a 5-1 ground ball to fly ball ratio. If he's able to continue to pitch the way he did in Brevard County and here today, he's someone to watch for a possible promotion later this season.

Huntsville Box Score

The Huntsville offense today was Robinzon Diaz. Not led by Diaz, he was it. The stars were limited to 3 hits and Diaz had all 3, including his 6th double on the season. The Stars did draw 2 walks, one from Nick Shaw and the other by Shawn Zarraga and third baseman Mike Walker was hit by a pitch.

Rattlers can't come all the way back in Burlington

Bees build 6-1 lead; hold on to beat Wisconsin 6-4

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BURLINGTON, IA - The Burlington Bees scored three times in the first inning and three times in the third inning to give them enough offense to defeat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6-4 Sunday afternoon at Community Field. Wade Hinkle and Chevy Clarke had big hits in both innings for the Bees.

Wisconsin (19-21) took the lead in the first inning. They had runners at the corners with no outs and Mitch Haniger grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to get the run home from third.

But, the Bees (15-24) scored three in the bottom of the first inning. Sherman Johnson drew a leadoff walk on four pitches. Hinkle doubled him in with a one out double. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases and Clarke's infield single knocked in Hinkle for a 2-0 lead.

Rattlers starting pitcher Tyler Wagner looked like he would get out of the inning with a double play after Zac Livingston sent a tapper back to the mound. Wagner's throw home got the force out, but the throw to first was wild and that allowed a run to score from second for a 3-0 advantage.

Burlington tacked on three more runs via the home run in the bottom of the third. Wagner walked Kyle Johnson on four pitches to start the inning. Hinkle hit the next pitch to left-center for a home run and a 5-1 lead for Burlington. Two outs later Chevy Clarke hit a solo home run and the Bees were up 6-1.

Wisconsin relievers Mike Strong and Martin Viramontes combined for five scoreless innings out of the bullpen to keep the Bees in check and give the bats a chance to get back into the game.

The Rattlers chipped away to get close. Parker Berberet tripled to start the fourth inning. An RBI grounder by Chris McFarland drove in Berberet to cut the lead to 6-2.

Orlando Arcia singled to start the fifth. He took second on a passed ball with one out. Mitch Haniger reached on two-out infield single and Arcia scored on an errant throw on the play. Later in the inning, Haniger scored on a wild pitch and the Rattlers were down only 6-4.

In the top of the eighth, Victor Roache singled and Berberet doubled with one out to put the tying runs in scoring position against Burlington reliever Eduard Santos. But, Santos struck out the next two batters to end the Rattlers threat.

Arcia doubled with one out in the top of the ninth against Burlington closer Jairo Diaz. But, Diaz got the final two outs to record his sixth save and send the Rattlers to their second straight loss.

Berberet ended the day 3-for-4 and was only missing a home run for the cycle.

Game four of the series is scheduled for Monday night. Damien Magnifico (4-0, 4.91) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Burlington has Alex Keudell (3-1, 2.49) set to start. Game time is 6:30pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm.

HOME RUNS:

BUR:

Wade Hinkle (4th, 1 on in 3rd inning off Tyler Wagner, 0 out)

Chevy Clarke (4th, 0 on in 3rd inning off Tyler Wagner, 2 out)

WP: Ryan Crowley (3-1)

LP: Tyler Wagner (4-2)

SAVE: Jairo Diaz (6)

TIME: 2:41

ATTN: 1,611

Wisconsin Boxscore

Unfortunately it appears Tyler Wagner just didn't have it tonight. Orlando Arcia had 2 hits, his steady ascent back to respectability continues.

The Rattlers only had 1 error, and I use "only" as in, "it's better than what I've come to expect". Mitch Haniger stole his 7th base and hasn't been caught once yet.

Wisconsin Recap

Odd play to end the first.

SALT LAKE CITY - Despite holding three different two-run leads Sunday afternoon at Spring Mobile Ballpark, the Nashville Sounds were on the losing end of an 8-7 extra-innings dogfight series finale against the Salt Lake Bees, splitting the series at two games apiece.

The Sounds had the Bees down to their last strike with a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the 10th inning, but Salt Lake catcher Luke Carlin spoiled Nashville's chance for its first series win of the season by crushing a two-run homer off closer Rob Wooten (0-1) for the walk-off win.

The Bees last-ditch rally marks Wooten's first loss and first blown save opportunity of the season, after previously going five-for-five. He finished with five earned runs on five hits over 1 2/3 innings of work. Jeremy Berg (1-0) picked up the win for Salt Lake.

Nashville nearly lost the game prior to extras, but outfielder Josh Prince found a timely double to right-center that scored three runs with two outs in the ninth inning. Prince's hit made it 5-3 Sounds before the Bees rallied against Wooten in the home half of the inning to tie it up.

In the 10th, the Sounds cashed in two lead-off walks for two runs and a 7-5 lead. With no outs and the bases-loaded, Sean Halton hit a fly ball to the outfield for a sacrifice fly, which was followed by Blake Davis' sacrifice bunt.

The Sounds first two-run lead disappeared in the sixth inning with reliever Mike Olmsted on the hill. Roberto Lopez started off the frame with a single to left field, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Jimmy Swift's double to the wall in centerfield.

Travis Webb stepped in after the Swift double to try and hold the 2-2 tie, but was hit for an RBI-single by leadoff man Trent Oeltjen. Webb proceeded to load the bases with two walks, but escaped any damage from the free offerings by getting Rodriguez to fly out.

The Sounds['] initial lead was started in the third by Blake Davis, who hit a triple to the right-field wall before coming home on Scooter Gennett's sacrifice fly.

In the fourth, catcher Blake Lalli belted a home run just over the right-field wall to make it 2-0. The homer was Lalli's second of the season for the Sounds and is the team's sixth in their last seven games.

Sounds pitchers entered the game on a 10-inning scoreless streak against Salt Lake and starting pitcher Frankie De La Cruz extended it to 14 before the Bees found their first run in the fifth. Bees Infielder Efren Navarro connected for a two-out single and came around to score on Luis Rodriguez's shallow bloop double, landing just fair in left field.

De La Cruz racked up five strikeouts to three walks against the Bees, letting in one run on six hits across five innings of work. He left in line for the win.

Also seeing work on the hill for Nashville was Tim Dillard, who loaded the bases on three walks, one intentional, before Kyle Heckathorn entered the game to pick up the final out of the seventh inning. Heckathorn stayed in to pitch a scoreless eighth to extend his streak to 11 consecutive innings without allowing a run.

The Sounds continue their road trip Monday, traveling to the Pacific Northwest to play a four-game series with the Tacoma Rainiers (AAA-Mariners). The Sounds will send RHP R.J. Seidel (0-0, 5.40) to the hill opposite Tacoma's RHP Blake Beaven (1-2, 4.86). Baseball returns to Greer Stadium on Friday, May 24, as the Sounds host the Albuquerque Isotopes (AAA-Dodgers) to a four-game set. The game will feature a postgame fireworks show.

Some some interesting T-Rat factoids, additional notes on Wagner and Arcia, plus some sabermetric silliness. I think Chris has a bigger man crush on Orlando than I do, and that's saying something.

Stars Silenced, Shutout By Biscuits

Alex Cohen, Huntsville Stars

Sporting a three-game winning streak coming into Sunday, the Huntsville Stars were shut down by Montgomery Biscuits starting pitcher Merrill Kelly and two relievers, losing by a score of 3-0 at Joe Davis Stadium.

Kelly, who was 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA against the Stars in three appearances last year, gave up just three hits in 6.2 innings of work while striking out five to improve to 3-4 on the season. Those three hits were the only ones given up by the Biscuits pitching staff all day, as lefty C.J Riefenhauser and closer Juan Sandoval combined to send down the Stars in order over the last 2.1 innings of the game. For Sandoval, a 1-2-3 ninth inning gave him his ninth save of the season.

For the Stars, the hard-pressed loser was RHP Taylor Jungmann, who fell to 3-5 on the year after giving up three runs and seven hits in a season-high seven innings.

Unfortunately for the Brewers second-ranked prospect, he gave up all three runs with two outs in the top of the third inning. After sending down catcher Mark Thomas and shortstop Robby Estrada in order to begin the frame, Jungmann gave up a double to designated hitter Kevin Kiermier and then walked second baseman Robby Price. Then, over a stretch of the next three batters, RBI singles from center fielder Mikie Mahtook and right fielder Todd Glaesmann and an RBI double from first baseman Cameron Seitzer made the score 3-0 and gave the Biscuits all the run support they needed.

Aside from a strong performance from Jungmann, the Stars also got two scoreless innings from lefty Dan Meadows, who made his first appearance with the team since turning into a sidearm specialist in the offseason. Meadows pitched in 33 games with the Stars in 2012, and represented Huntsville as a Midseason Southern League All-Star in 2011.

On offense, the Stars got all three of their hits from catcher Robinzon Diaz. The rest of the team combined to go 0-for-27 with two walks.

For Huntsville, the loss snapped their three-game winning streak, which was tied for a season-high. Overall, the shutout was the fourth of the season for the Stars offense.

The Stars and Biscuits will play game four of their five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium on Monday. Huntsville will send RHP Andy Moye (1-5, 5.79 ERA) to the bump to square off against Montgomery LHP Enny Romero (2-1, 4.58 ERA). First pitch is at 6:43 PM.

Deseret News (full article link)

After the Bees dug an early hole, took back the lead, surrendered it late, and then re-tied the score, catcher Luke Carlin created that winning run, blasting a two-RBI shot past the right-field fence with his only hit of the day.

“I faced him in the ninth, so that at-bat in the 10th I had a good idea of what he had,” Carlin said of Nashville closer Rob Wooten. “I figured I was going to get something soft. (I) got lucky.”
