2013-05-17 Brewers (Peralta) at Cardinals (Garcia), 7:15 PM CDT [Brewers lose, 7-6]

Damn my optimism. I have no desire to trade, dfa, or murder Weeks. He will be fine. I think the organization has done a poor job managing his slump.

That was so predictable that Weeks would strike out there. He had no chance against that type of a pitcher.

Yeah, but you can make it a little more fun by placing friendly wagers on the number of pitches it will take.

I fully agree. EDIT: actually, I'd be all for a trade, but finding a trading partner would be next to impossible.

This slump can't go on all season, it just can't.

He needs to sit a few games, maybe 2 or 3 straight, then see what happens. Sitting him one game, only to pinch hit him in the one game he sits isn't the way to go about it.

The players shouldn't be writing out the line-up. If the manager thinks he should take a game or two off, then that is what should happen. Time to man up and manage the team, not let players dictate how it should be managed.

It doesn't matter how bad they are, I won't lose interest, but I will lose my mind...

I'll tune in no matter what, but it sure is more fun when they have a chance to win ball games. Right now, it just feels like they don't, and playing the Cardinals doesn't help matters.

Fair enough. I was being generous.

Not sure why you feel the need to taunt me.

Whatever floats your boat I guess...

I am not taunting you. I am pointing out that despite you being a prolific poster, you don't seem to cover very many topics. If you don't agree, so be it.

I don't agree with your take on my posting habits. In these threads (In Game threads) I go with the flow.

Weeks comes up a lot because that is what is going on at the moment, Same thing with the manager. He makes decisions, and it is hard not to comment.

Isn't that what these threads are all about? Game discussion live?

It seems there are a lot of posters in these threads banging the same drum day in and day out about various players, etc, yet you chose me to call out, as you have done before.

I can't wait to be able to say how Rickie has turned a corner and is helping the team win games... I hope that day is sooner rather than later.

And now you have a neck tattoo!! you're trying to get a job teaching kindegarten and noone will hire you...because you have a neck tattoo, you big scary piece of...."

His taking over the team has mostly been a huge positive, but hyper-competitive owners in any pro sport who take pleasure in being involved with roster construction can sometimes have a negative effect.

I completely agree, danzig6767, that Mark's taking over the Brewers has been a big time positive. I don't know how much he is influencing baseball decisions, and more than anything relating the nightmare scenario I see here in Dallas. I think Mark has a lot more sense than Jerruh, and I hope he, too, will see that we are in a position where things could get very rough here soon unless some changes are made.

If a change at manager and GM is going to be done, better it be done now. Ryan Braun is still young, turning 30 this season. I want him to get another shot at the World Series, and if we don't make some drastic moves now, we're going to waste his prime years floundering.

I love the Brewers. I've been a faithful fan since I was a kid, and it pains me to see the franchise with so little young talent, especially on the pitching side of the ball. Whatever the status quo is as far as scouting and development...it's not working.

We all hope for that, but if you look at his minor league stats, he had a career 1.410 WHIP. A poor K/BB ratio. The only really good thing he did was not serve up a lot of home runs.

If Peralta didn't throw as hard as he does, he'd likely have never been called up to the majors yet.

Peralta also had the best GOSO (ground out, strike out) rate of all AAA pitchers last season. The WHIP is due to a lack of refinement. He's got the stuff, I just wonder if we have the pitching coaches to help him take the raw stuff he has, and help him turn into a strong #2 or 3.

We keep hearing about the Brewers leading the NL in steals but they also easily lead in caught stealing as well. RR just has them running wild, with predictable results.

That's an excellent point, rluzinski, and I was going to post something about the other night, and just forgot. Braun's now what, 2 for 7 in stolen base attempts? I know Aoki has stolen 6 bases, but has also been nailed 5 times. Segura has been outstanding percentage wise (14 of 16), as has Gomez (9 of 11). But stealing a lot of bases isn't necessarily a good thing if you're getting them at a low percentage. Running yourself out of an inning is poor fundamental baseball. We need to run a little less, and increase our success rate.

And the stolen bases totals are inflated by the two games vs the Pirates where we stole like 10 or 11 bases on their brutal backup catcher with one of the worst arms i've ever seen.

Now 0-4 vs cards 0-3 vs reds 1-3 vs pirates 0-1 vs Stl smelling another sweep. Think it time to take a weekend off from the crew .

The so frustrating thing is if say we score 6 runs like we did tonight, the pitching staff will give up 7 or more. Then the next game the staff will hold one of those teams to say only 3 runs, but we only score 1 or 2. Almost without fail if the pitching staff actually has a good game vs the Red or especially St. Louis, then the offense craps the bed. Score a decent amount of runs though, of course our pitchers implode that game.

I'm not trying to imply that the Brewers deserve to be above .500, but man, when things are going really bad for a baseball team, it's so maddening how often things can happen as i mentioned above.

I don't disagree that it has felt that way recently but the Brewers have been outscored by 30 runs on the year. They have largely earned their poor record.

I saw the Brewers as a team that could compete, hopefully hover around .500, and make some steps forward with our young pitching. I wasn't looking at it as a rebuilding year, but I did expect some growing pains. I thought Gallardo would still be solid. I also thought the moves we made in the offseason would bolster our bullpen. I'd hoped that Axford would rebound slightly.

Gallardo has taken a step backwards this season. He's not been sharp to date. Axford has been awful, and the only thing more nerve-wracking than his poor performance has been Roenicke's refusal to leave him out of high leverage situations. Send him down to Nashville to work, or let him work it out in mop up duty. Teams like ours cannot afford to just throw away games because Roenicke has some sort of reclamation project going with John Axford.

Ax might be the nicest guy in baseball. I like him as a person. But this is business, and I don't care if John marries Roenicke's daughter. As a manager, he has to make the tough decisions that are sometimes necessary to win. He can't worry about being buddy buddy. A lot of money is invested in this team, and it's not performing anywhere near where it should be.

Right.

We've had guys hitting the snot out of the ball (Gomez and Segura specifically), but we're really not scoring that many runs. We're 22nd in the Majors in scoring. 163 runs in 40 games is 4.075 rpg.

Our pitchers have a 4.55 ERA. Baseball 101 tells me that we need to score a little more, and give up a little less. And I think right now we're performing below our averages, which were bolstered somewhat by our 9 game winning streak.

Yeowch, we're giving up a full run per game more in 2013 than we did in 2011. 3.63 vs 4.60.
