Audio from Nashville — Pitching Coach Fred Dabney

Today’s interview for the Sounds’ 11:05 a.m. CT start on Sports Talk 830-AM is pitching coach Fred Dabney, who discusses the Sounds’ pitching staff through the first 30 games of the season, the struggles of Tyler Thornburg, the success of returning relievers Rob Wooten, Donovan Hand and Jesus Sanchez, and the exciting raw ability of flame-throwing right-hander Johnny Hellweg.

At some point Rob Wooten needs to get a chance. Their aren't exactly a lot of dominant relievers in Milwaukee that are blocking him.

Check out what Jesus Sanchez is doing, including today. Plus Sanchez is on the 40-man, so he's ahead of Wooten on the pecking order.

Wooten might be added to the 40-man this fall, as he'd be a potential Rule 5 target, even as a 28-year-old.

As Brandon Kintzler is showing, having "minimum-wage" (and effective) guys filling the bullpen slots can be very valuable.

Final: Charlotte (Rays) 7, Brevard County 6

Brevard edged 7-6 in slugfest with Charlotte

Macias goes 4-for-4, Fiers fans eight as 'Tees split series

By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - Lead-off home runs for each team set the tone for an offensive game in which the Charlotte Stone Crabs out-powered the Brevard County Manatees, 7-6 on Wednesday afternoon in front of 4,072 fans at Space Coast Stadium to split the four-game series.

Kes Carter launched the first pitch of the game for the first home run, but the Manatees (17-16) answered back with Brandon Macias starting the bottom of the first with a homer. Cameron Garfield followed suit a few batters later to give the home team a 2-1 lead.

Brevard's advantage was extended in the third inning, when Macias came around to score a RBI single off the bat of Garfield.

Charlotte (10-22) tipped the game back in their favor with a three-run fifth inning. After a ground out to begin the fifth, three straight batters reached with the first two scoring on a Willie Argo triple to make it a 4-3 ballgame.

That lasted only until the next half inning, when Macias doubled and scored to even it out at four runs apiece on a Greg Hopkins double that chased starter Felipe Rivero from the contest.

Macias went 4-for-4 on the day and reached on a walk in his other plate appearance. It was the fourth time in Macias' career and second time this season that he has recorded four hits in a game.

Mike Fiers made the start for the Manatees, going six innings with eight strikeouts and no walks. He did give up six hits for four runs, including the homer to Carter to start the game.

Andre Lamontagne came out of the bullpen in a tie game and surrendered just one hit was in line for the win, when Macias doubled home Lance Roenicke in the fifth to give the Manatees a 5-4 lead.

His potential win was taken away when Richie Shaffer took Kevin Shackelford deep for two runs and a 6-5 lead in the eighth. However, the Manatees were again able to answer back with a run in the home half on a walk, a hit batter and an error followed by Roenicke's RBI groundout. Brevard County though would strand two runners in the scoring position to end the threat.

Entering the ninth, the game was tied at 6-6 until Charlotte catcher Jake DePew hit his team's third homer of the game and fifth overall.

Charlotte's Lenny Linsky worked himself into a jam with runners on first and second with just one out in the bottom of the ninth, but fanned two straight batters to get out of it and earn the victory.

Brevard County will look to get back on track as they open a three-game series with the Tampa Yankees (14-18) beginning on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium.

Brevard County Box Score

Heck of a game for Brandon Macias. On base all five times. 4 for 4 with a walk, two doubles and a home run. Knocked in two and scored three runs. Pretty nice little Wednesday. Unfortunately, Macias had exactly half of the Manatees hits today. Cameron Garfield had a two hit day, including his team leading sixth home run. Lance Roenicke and Greg Hopkins each doubled for the other two Brevard hits. In what's been a season long issue, the Manatees struck out another 14 times today. Mike Fiers gave up four runs in six innings in his first BC outing. Andre Lamontagne pitched a scoreless seventh. Kevin Shackelford gave up three runs in two innings and was charged with a blown save and the loss.

Final: Huntsville 1 Jackson 0

The Stars and Generals engaged in a pitchers dual Wednesday night with the Stars coming out on top 1-0. The story of the night was the performance of Ariel Pena. The big righty had his best performance with the Brewers organization. Pena (2-2) worked 6+ innings, allowing only 4 hits. Walks, which have been a season long problem for Ariel, were not an issue this game as Pena only walked 2. 54 of 87 pitches were for strikes tonight. Pena set the season high for Huntsville pitchers by striking out 10. Pena was on the attack all game, getting ahead of hitters. His fastball was consistently 92-95 tonight.

Greg Holle came on in relief of Pena with 2 runners on and no outs in the top of the 7th and worked out of that jam and then proceeded to work a scoreless 8th as well. Holle recorded 3 strike outs over his 2 innings or work. This was Holle's 3rd straight strong outing out of the bullpen for the Stars. Closer Casey Medlen came on to work the 9th. Medlen allowed a hit and hit a batter before recording the final out for his 5th save on the season. Medlen ended up striking out the side in closing out the Stars first shutout of the season.

The Stars pitchers combined to strike out 16 while only walking 2.

Huntsville Box Score

Huntsville was held to 1 run on 4 hits. First baseman Jason Rogers was the only Stars batter with more than 1 hit. Rogers doubled twice and also reached base on a hit by pitch. Catcher Shawn Zarraga and centerfielder Rene Tosoni had the other hits. Zarraga scored the Stars lone run in the 3rd on a wild pitch. The Stars drew 3 walks tonight, one each for Zarraga, Brock Kjeldgaard, and Mike Walker.

Hector Gomez grounds out, third baseman Vinnie Catricala to first baseman Steven Proscia.

With Kentrail Davis batting, wild pitch by Chance Ruffin, Shawn Zarraga scores.

Kentrail Davis strikes out swinging.

With the win tonight, the Stars record now stands at 12-20 and 4-13 at The Joe. Game 3 will be tomorrow night. The Stars will have their work cut of for them as they will be facing top prospect Taijuan Walker (3-2, 1.54 ERA). Huntsville is expected to activate their own top prospect Taylor Jungmann (1-4, 7.89 ERA) from the disabled list to start for them. Game time is scheduled for 6:43 Central with Alex Cohen's pregame show starting at 6:30.

Wagner goes the distance to shutout Clinton 5-0 in game one

Rattlers run win streak to six games behind 10Ks by starting pitcher

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Tyler Wagner kept the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on a roll. The former closer for the University of Utah struck out a career high ten batters as he twirled a complete game shutout in a 5-0 win over the Clinton LumberKings in game one of a doubleheader at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

Wisconsin showed no ill effects from the off day on Tuesday. The Timber Rattlers grabbed the early lead with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Mitch Haniger drove in Tyrone Taylor with a single. Victor Roache's fly ball to center was dropped to allow him to reach base on a sacrifice fly that scored Michael Reed from third base. Later in the inning Chris McFarland drove in both Haniger and Roache with a single.

Tyler Wagner took that lead and ran with it. The Wisconsin starting pitcher worked around an error and a walk in the second inning. In the fourth, a close 3-2 pitch with two outs was called a ball to allow the inning to continue. Tyler Marlette got jammed on an 0-2 pitch and sent a weak grounder halfway up the third base line for the first Clinton hit of the game. Wagner got the final out of the inning to keep the LumberKings off the scoreboard.

Clinton (13-16) threatened in the top of the sixth. Guillermo Pimentel reached on an infield single with one out and Patrick Kivlehan dumped in a single into center to put a pair of runners. But, Wagner stopped the LumberKings cold by getting Dario Pizzano to ground into an inning ending 6-4-3 double play.

Jose Sermo singled in a run in the bottom of the sixth to give the Rattlers a 5-0 lead.

Wagner set down the LumberKings in order in the top of the seventh to finish off his gem. Wagner struck out a pair in the seventh to give him a total of ten in the game. He walked two and picked up his third win of the season.

The win was the sixth straight for the Timber Rattlers and moved them to 14-14 on the season.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds picked up a 5-2 win over the Fresno Grizzlies Wednesday morning at Greer Stadium, in front of a season-high 10,079 fans in attendance for the second of three Sounds Education Days.

Tied 2-2 in the seventh with runners on the corners and one out, shortstop Blake Davis, who was already two-for-two on the day, lofted a ball into left field for a sacrifice-fly to drive in the go-ahead run. With his single and triple earlier in the game, Davis improves his hit streak to seven games.

The Sounds added another two runs: the first from Hainley Statia's pinch-hit RBI-double to right field after the Davis sacrifice, and the final on a Cole Garner single in the eighth. Garner's run scored second baseman Scooter Gennett, who reached base on balls in his final plate appearance to reach base for the 26th consecutive game, the PCL's longest active streak.

Jesus Sanchez (3-0) picked up the win from the hill for Nashville, his third, retiring nine consecutive batters over three innings and five by strikeout. Michael Olmsted pitched a hitless eighth before making way for Rob Wooten, who faced the minimum to pick up his fifth save of the season.

Sounds pitchers combined to hold Fresno batters to three hits and totaled 14 strikeouts to mark a single-game season high, surpassing the team's previous best of 13, set on April 19 in Iowa.

The Sounds captured the 2-1 lead in the third inning on a fielder's choice throwing error sequence with two runners in scoring position. Anderson De La Rosa and Blake Davis each singled to start the frame and moved one base closer on [R.J.] Seidel's sacrifice bunt.

In the next at-bat, Josh Prince bunted the ball towards first base, which Fresno pitcher Michael Kickham (0-4) fielded and, in trying to beat De La Rosa home, sailed to the backstop, allowing Blake Davis to score on the throwing error.

The Grizzlies scored first in the game with a Brett Pill RBI-single to centerfield in the first inning, scoring Kensuke Tanaka, who doubled and stole third. In the fourth, outfielder Juan Perez hit a triple to centerfield to score Johnny Monell and level the game at two runs apiece.

Both Fresno runs came off Sounds starting pitcher R.J. Seidel, who made his Triple-A debut after posting a 4.85 ERA in eight relief appearances with Double-A Huntsville. The 25-year-old allowed three hits across four innings of work, with six strikeouts and three walks.

The Sounds are back Thursday night (7:05 p.m.) at Greer Stadium, for game three of four against the Fresno Grizzlies. Nashville's RHP Frankie De La Cruz (1-4, 7.71) will get the start against Fresno's RHP Boof Bonser (1-2, 4.97).

Clinton comes back to get the split

LumberKings score three in the sixth and hang on for a 4-2 win over Rattlers

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Clinton LumberKings snapped Wisconsin's six-game winning streak with a 4-2 win in game two of a doubleheader at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Wednesday night. The LumberKings erased a 2-1 Timber Rattlers lead by scoring three times in the top of the sixth inning and holding on for the win.

The Timber Rattlers (14-15) manufactured a run in the bottom of the first inning. Alfredo Rodriguez drew a leadoff walk and went to second on an errant pickoff attempt. Michael Reed moved Rodriguez to third with a sacrifice bunt. Mitch Haniger drove Rodriguez home with a sacrifice fly to right.

Wisconsin made the score 2-0 in the bottom of the third. Mike Garza tripled to start the inning. Rodriguez drove him in with a one out single.

Clinton (14-16) broke through against the Timber Rattlers in the top of the fifth inning. Guillermo Pimentel doubled with two outs to drive in Pat Kivlehan. That run cut the Rattlers lead to 2-1. That run was also the first scored by the LumberKings in 11-2/3 innings of the doubleheader. Wisconsin had shutout Clinton 5-0 in the first game.

The LumberKings rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Dario Pizzano doubled to start the inning. Tyler Marlette followed with a triple to right-center field. That triple drove in the tying run and knocked Wisconsin starting pitcher Mike Strong out of the game.

Jono Armold took over for Strong and broke the bat of Gaby Guerrero, but the ball dropped into left field for an RBI single to give Clinton a 3-2 lead. Later in the frame, an error allowed Guerrero to score a run that put the LumberKings up 4-2.

Wisconsin would attempt a couple of rallies to keep their winning streak alive. The Rattlers had two outs and none on in the sixth inning when an error, a walk, and a wild pitch put the tying runs in scoring position. But, Oliver Garcia escaped the inning. In the seventh, Wisconsin again had two outs with none one against Clinton closer Grady Wood when a hit batsman, a passed ball, and an infield single put runners on the corners. But, Wood got the final out to pick up his fifth save and earn the split in the twinbill.

Game three of the series is Thursday night. The first 1,000 fans to attend this game will receive a poster of Timber Rattlers outfielder Victor Roache, a 2012 first round draft pick of the Milwaukee Brewers, courtesy of Dunkin Donuts. All fans can enjoy 16oz soda, beer, or Arty's Old Fashioned drinks for just $2 as part of Thirsty Thursday presented by Arty's Old Fashioned and 95.9 KISS FM.

If you can't make it to the stadium, the game is available to Time Warner Cable subscribers on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel. Fans may also tune in on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm.

Thursday's game is also available on MiLB.tv.

Wisconsin Game 2 Boxscore

Clint Coulter and Orlando Arcia are still struggling at the plate. Every once in a while it's looked like Arcia would explode out of his slump and then he'll go hitless again for 2 games. Michael Garza had the only multi-hit game and a triple while Mitch Haniger added a double.

I'm pretty conservative when it comes to promoting pitchers, I prefer 1 season at a time or complete dominance with a bump at the break. However I'm almost the exact opposite when it comes to position players... Haniger has played well and has positional versatility in the OF, I see no reason for him to be in WI any longer. I've lost track of how many games the Rattlers still need to make up, but once the T-Rats are caught up schedule wise I really don't have a good reason why he should be in WI any longer. You know what, this has nothing to do with WI but I refrained from posting this earlier today even though I wanted to so I'll just say that I'd also like to see some of the AAA relievers get a shot this season, especially Jesus Sanchez. Yes I beat the drum for most of the last year and I'm a sucker for a good story which is why I was going to give it a rest but Sanchez is no longer a 1 season wonder.

At any rate back to the Rattlers, in addition to his struggles at the plate Clint Coulter also had his 8th passed ball of the season in game 2, there just hasn't been much going his way so far.
