Subscriber piece. Not that I really wanted the Pirates to have Appel in the fold, but his refusal to sign ticks me off the same way it does in other sports when players are drafted and try to hold that team hostage for a trade or what have you.

From the broadcast, Alex described it as Rogers was "reluctantly" leaving the game. Was shaking out his right hand/forearm. Did not appear to be shoulder or elbow from the way it was described. We'll have to watch for a report from one of the beat writers around the team as I don't think the Stars will be releasing anything on this.

Final: Jackson 8 Huntsville 3

The Jackson Generals scored early and often and cruised to a 8-3 victory Tuesday night at The Joe. Starter Jimmy Nelson (3-2) had his shortest outing of the season lasting only 3 innings. Jackson got to Nelson for 6 runs, 4 earned on 10 hits. Nelson didn't walk anyone and struck out 2. The damage could have been worse if not for a couple outfield assists to get runners at 3rd. While Nelson had a bad night, Mark Williams had his best performance at the AA level. Williams pitched 1 inning striking out 2.

The big story out of the game tonight was Mark Rogers. Rogers lasted only 9 pitches. 8 pitches were balls and the one strike he threw was hit for a long home run. Rogers was removed with what appeared to be a arm issue. He left with the trainer. Alex described Rogers as shaking out his hand/forearm. No further update was provided during the game and we'll probably have to wait for something from the beat reporters.

Brian Garman, Thomas Keeling, and Eric Marzec combined for 5 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Garman pitched 3 innings, giving up 3 hits and a walk while striking out 5. Coming into the game tonight, Garman had only struck out 6 for the season, over 13 1/3 innings. Real strong effort and great bullpen saving outing for Garman tonight. Keeling pitched a clean 8th inning. This was the 7th straight outing for Keeling where he didn't allow a run. Marzec pitched the ninth, allowing a walk and striking out 1.

Huntsville Box Score

Offensively, the Stars were held to 3 runs on 8 hits. Catcher Robinzon Diaz led the Stars with 3 hits including a double and home run. 3rd baseman Shea Vucinich added 2 hits including a solo home run. Rene Tosoni added an RBI double and Joey Paciorek and Nick Shaw each had a single. Kentrail Davis drew 2 walks tonight, giving him 22 in 31 games. In 122 games last season, Davis had 54 walks. Nice to see this part of his game improve.

Team RISP: 2-for-10.

Team LOB: 8.

The story of lack of clutch hits and runners left on base continued.

Huntsville Play By Play

As has been the case way too often this year, the Stars fall behind early

The only thing going for Mark Rogers is that he's earning a big league salary right now. If his injury is serious (again), he'll get his half-million this year. The word tragic shouldn't be associated with baseball regardless, but lots of guys with talent fell short via injuries without the big signing bonus or the big league salary time. Feel bad for him, yes, but...

Going to keep this one bare bones tonight... However, we have a (not Brooks) Kieschnick sighting!

Sounds Open Homestand With 5-3 Loss

Parker, Gennett Extend Streaks For Nashville In Defeat

Stephen Parker (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds began their homestand with a 5-3 loss to the Fresno Grizzlies on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series.

The defeat was the tenth in the last 11 games for Nashville (8-22), which dropped a series opener at home for the first time all season. The Sounds won their previous four openers.

Grizzlies starter Shane Loux (3-1) kept the Nashville offense in check during a quality start victory. The right-hander allowed one run on three hits over six innings.

Fresno took control early, erupting for five two-out runs in the top of the second inning to grab a 5-0 lead against Sounds starter Zach Kroenke.

The Grizzlies loaded the bases with no outs on a pair of singles and a walk off the left-hander. Kroenke recovered to retire the next two hitters on a flyout and strikeout before third baseman Juan Perez worked an eight-pitch at-bat into a broken-bat, two-run single to shallow left that put the visitors on the board. Gary Brown doubled the Fresno lead to 4-0 when he followed with a two-run double down the left field line and Roger Kieschnick (3-for-3) capped off the five-run rally with a run-scoring two-bagger to right that skidded just inside the first base bag.

Kroenke (0-5) suffered his fifth loss in six starts for Nashville after giving up five runs on six hits in five innings of work, his longest outing of the year.

Nashville missed a chance to get on the board in the home half of the third. Kroenke led off with a single and moved to second when shortstop Juan Ciriaco mishandled Josh Prince's grounder. Scooter Gennett followed with a single up the middle to extend his PCL-leading on-base streak to 25 games. Kroenke attempted to score from second on the play but was thrown out at the plate by Brown from center field.

The Sounds finally broke through in the fourth when Hunter Morris singled with one out and later scored on a Dayton Buller groundout.

Third baseman Stephen Parker (2-for-3) extended his season-best hitting streak to 10 games with a leadoff single in the seventh. After Buller followed with a single of his own, the Sounds stranded a pair of baserunners in scoring position in the frame, as pinch-hitter Cole Garner and Prince fanned in succession against Fresno reliever Steve Edlefsen.

Nashville didn't go down without a fight in the ninth, plating a pair of runs and bringing the potential tying run to the plate against the Grizzlies' bullpen.

With one out, Parker singled and Buller drew a walk from Ramon Ramirez to put a pair of runners on board for Blake Davis, who delivered an RBI single to right to make it a 5-2 game. Kieschnick overran the ball on the play, allowing the runners to advance to second and third with one out.

Fresno skipper Bob Mariano summoned Heath Hembree from the bullpen to face pinch-hitter Sean Halton, who lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Buller to draw the Sounds within 5-3. Hembree then retired Prince on a game-ending groundout to nail down his second save of the year.

The teams continue the series on Wednesday morning with an 11:05 a.m. matinee. Right-hander R.J. Seidel will make his Triple-A debut with a start for the Sounds. Fresno will counter with southpaw Michael Kickham (0-3, 6.00).

Three right-handed bats; Meadows has been sweet with his new sidearm motion, but he actually needs to face more lefties.

Stars Drop Series Opener with Generals

By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars

To begin a five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium, the Huntsville Stars fell to the Jackson Generals by a score of 8-3 on Tuesday night.

Unfortunately for the Stars, they trailed for virtually the entire game, starting in the first inning. With a pair of RBI doubles from Generals shortstop Brad Miller and catcher John Hicks, Jackson took an early two-run lead through just five batters faced by Stars starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson. Later in the inning, an RBI single from third baseman Vinny Catricala made the score 3-0.

After a solo homer by Jackson first baseman Steve Proscia put the Generals lead at four in the top of the second, the Stars were able to get a run back in the bottom half of the frame. To start off the inning, first baseman Jason Rogers and left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard drew consecutive walks against Generals starting pitcher Roenis Elias. Two batters later, an RBI double from center fielder Rene Tosoni scored Rogers to cut the Stars deficit to three.

Unfortunately for the Stars, that momentum would be short-lived. Back-to-back RBI singles from Catricala and right fielder Fernando Martinez gave Jackson a 6-1 lead in the third and ultimately chased Nelson from the game. The 23-year-old righty was tabbed with his second loss of the year after giving up six runs (four earned) on ten hits.

The closest the Stars were able to get following that point was three, as solo homers from third baseman Shea Vucinich in the third and catcher Robinzon Diaz in the fourth made the score 6-3. Vucinich and Diaz also combined to have five of eight Huntsville hits, the backstop for the Stars coming up with three of them.

Jackson tacked on their final two runs in the fifth inning, as Generals designated hitter Julio Morban greeted Stars reliever Mark Rogers with a solo homer to start off the inning. Then, after a four-pitch walk to Catricala and two straight balls thrown to Martinez, Rogers was taken out of the game after nine total pitches (eight balls) in his fifth MLB rehab outing with Huntsville. A sacrifice fly from left fielder Leon Landry later scored Catricala to make the score 8-3.

On the bright side, the Stars bullpen was able to blank the Generals offense through the final five innings of the game. Lefty Brian Garman led the way with three shutout frames, while relievers Thomas Keeling and Eric Marzec tacked on a scoreless inning each.

For the Stars, the loss at home was their fifth straight and now brings their record at The Joe to 3-13 on the season.

The Stars and Generals will play game two of their five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium on Wednesday. Huntsville will send RHP Ariel Pena (1-2, 4.32 ERA) to the bump to square off against Jackson RHP Chance Ruffin (1-0, 3.10 ERA). First pitch is at 6:43 PM.

Final: Charlotte (Rays) 5, Brevard County 3

Brevard bested by Charlotte, 5-3

By Dave Walkovic / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - The Charlotte Stone Crabs snapped an 11-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Brevard County Manatees on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Starting pitcher Parker Markel carried a perfect game into the sixth inning for Charlotte (9-22) who led for all nine innings. Markel's perfect game bid ended with one out in the sixth when Lance Roenicke lashed a double to right-center field. Roenicke finished 2-for-3 on the evening and was the only Manatee hitter with a multi-hit game. The Manatees were held to just four hits all night long.

The Stone Crabs wasted no time getting on the board against 'Tees starting pitcher Brooks Hall. Kes Carter led off the game with a triple that was lined down the first base line. With one out, Jake Hager hit a sacrifice fly to left field to give Charlotte the early 1-0 lead.

The Stone Crabs extended their lead in the third inning. Jake Hager, Richie Shaffer and Alejandro Segovia all reached with two outs off of Hall. Jeffery Malm then smacked a two-run double off the right field wall to make it 3-0.

Charlotte added two more in the sixth when Willie Argo hit an RBI double and Carter singled in another run.

Hall (2-3, 2.75) would end up taking the loss as he gave up three runs in five innings of work. He allowed six hits, walked four and struck out two batters.

Brevard County (17-15) did start to chip away at the deficit in the bottom of the sixth. After Roenicke broke up the perfecto with his one-out double, T.J. Mittelstaedt doubled to right to score Roenicke and put the Manatees on the board. After Greg Hopkins walked, Nick Ramirez crushed a two-run triple off the top of the batters' eye in center to make it a 4-2 game.

The 'Tees would bring the tying run to the plate in both the seventh and eighth innings, but could not plate another run as Austin Hubbard tossed 2.1 scoreless innings to earn his third save of the season.

Four-time Major League All-Star Francisco Rodriguez made his 2013 debut in the eighth inning. He walked Argo with two outs, but recorded a scoreless frame and struck out two batters.

Brevard County and Charlotte will wrap-up their four-game series with 10:35 a.m. matinee on Wednesday.
