Final: Charlotte (Rays) 2, Brevard County 4

'Tees nip Stone Crabs for third straight win

By Andy Towne / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - Yadiel Rivera's first inning double cleared the bases, brought home three runs and was ultimately the difference in a 4-2 Brevard County Manatees' win over the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium.

The win was the third in a row for Brevard County (17-14), matching the season's best win streak. On the other side, the loss was Charlotte's (8-22) 11th consecutive.

Chadwin Stang added an insurance run in the top of the second as he hammered a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall to make it 4-0.

Charlotte responded with two runs in a long top half of the third that saw Kes Carter lead off with a double and score two batters later on a Hector Guevara single. Jake Hager singled in between and also scored when Richie Shaffer hit a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to two runs.

Rafael Neda nearly had a homer of his own in the bottom half of the third, but Taylor Motter robbed him with a catch off the top of the left field wall. That was the closest either team would get to scoring again as Brevard County didn't have a hitter reach in the fifth, sixth or seventh innings.

The reigning Florida State League Pitcher of the Week Drew Gagnon (3-2, 5.29) earned the victory as he lasted five innings and struck out six. He surrendered both Stone Crabs runs on five hits and two walks.

Chad Pierce threw three shutout innings in relief of Gagnon as he allowed just one hit and one walk. Seth Harvey came on in the ninth for a scoreless frame to earn his eighth save of the season.

Brevard County has a chance to clinch the series victory on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m., with Brooks Hall (2-2, 2.36) toeing the rubber for the home team. Parker Markel (0-4, 9.91) will represent the Stone Crabs.
