Broadcast note: Great Lakes, like Wisconsin, is one of the few Midwest League clubs to offer MiLB.TV games, so Rattlers diehards, family, and friends can watch the Loons telecasts online in this series (remember, MiLB.TV games archive as well).

Rattlers getting no-hit through six innings so far (This is my attempt to jinx it). Michael Reed has been the only baserunner after drawing a 4th inning walk.

 

*edit* - It worked! Michael Reed with a double to lead off the seventh.

Wisconsin edges Loons 3-1 to earn sweep

Timber Rattlers end road trip on five-game winning streak

MIDLAND, MI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers got the key hits they needed to defeat the Great Lakes Loons 3-1 on Monday at Dow Diamond. Tyrone Taylor and Michael Reed drove in the Wisconsin runs in the top of the eighth inning to send the Rattlers to their fifth straight win.

 

The contest was a pitchers' duel for most of the day.

 

Wisconsin (13-14) got their first base runner of the game against Loons starting pitcher Angel Sanchez in the top of the fourth inning. Michael Reed drew a one out walk and stole second. But, Sanchez struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

 

Great Lakes (12-18) had a one out double by Jesmuel Sanchez in the fourth and a leadoff single by Paul Hoenecke in the fifth inning against Rattlers starter Eric Semmelhack. Those were the only hits the Loons got off Semmelhack, who went six scoreless frames with a walk and four strikeouts.

 

Reed broke up the no-hit bid with a leadoff double in the top of the seventh inning, but Sanchez worked through the next three batters and stranded Reed at third base to keep the game scoreless.

 

Sanchez allowed one hit, walked one, and struck out eight over seven innings before turning the game over to the Great Lakes bullpen for the top of the eighth.

 

That was when the Timber Rattlers broke the scoreless tie.

 

Parker Berberet walked with one out and went to third on a two-out single by Orlando Arcia. Tyrone Taylor beat out a bunt single to score Berberet with the first run of the game. A wild pitch by Loons reliever Jonathan Martinez moved Arcia to third and Taylor to second. Reed smacked a single to center to drive in both runners and Wisconsin was up 3-0.

 

The Loons rallied against Preston Gainey in the bottom of the eighth. Jesus Valdez singled and Pat Stover doubled to give Great Lakes runners on second and third with no outs. Valentin got Valdez home and sent Stover to third. But, Gainey struck out James Baldwin and got Kevin Taylor to line out to left to end the inning and maintain a 3-1 lead.

 

Gainey would go on to work a scoreless ninth to finish off the sweep. Gainey picked up his first professional victory with his three innings of work.

 

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are off on Tuesday. They return to action on Wednesday to begin a ten-game, nine-day homestand with a doubleheader against the Clinton LumberKings. The Timber Rattlers have Tyler Wagner (2-1, 3.13) and Mike Strong (0-0, 1.89) as their scheduled starting pitchers. Clinton has named Tyler Pike (1-2, 2.74) and Rusty Shellhorn (0-0, 3.00) as their scheduled starters. A pair of 7-inning games are planned for the twinbill with game one scheduled to begin at 5:05pm.

 

Wednesday is a Bang for Your Buck Night presented by WIXX. Fans may enjoy soda, hotdogs, and beer for $1.

 

If you can't make it out to the stadium, My NEW32's Sports Showdown will telecast the second game of the doubleheader.

Have a day Eric Semmelhack! This is exactly what I wanted to see when I sat down for lunch.

 

Last week I discussed a between game interview that Chris had done with Matt Erickson and one of the parts I skipped was some talk about how last year's team came together on a long road trip and played much better after that point. Here's hoping that same scenario plays out after this road trip, a 5 game winning streak and back within 1 game of .500.

First, re-read Chris' Rattlers Radio Blog post about Victor Roache's screaming line drive HR Sunday.

 

MiLB.com has now posted video of the blast, which probably doesn't due it total justice, but is still impressive. Hard not to really like the power skillset from Roache.

Looks like our behind-the-scenes suggesting (yes, I have the emails :)) has worked and now joining Brevard County's recent splash (and Nashville and Helena) on the audio interview and highlight trail is Alex and Huntsville, nice! Looking forward to linking future entries here.

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Nashville Sounds avoided going winless on their eight-game road trip Monday at The Dell Diamond, rallying from four runs down to defeat the Round Rock Express, 9-5, in the nine-inning three-hour 46-minute series finale. The team concludes the road trip 1-7, snapping a nine-game losing skid with their first win on the road since April 13.

 

Trailing 4-3 heading into the 6th, the Sounds strung together four runs off of Round Rock reliever Lisalverto Bonilla (2-1). The action began with Khris Davis' second hit as a Sound: a home run to left field that tied the game. One batter later, outfielder Sean Halton knocked the Sounds third dinger of the day for the 5-4 advantage.

 

The Sounds added two more runs in the frame on Blake Davis' double down the left-field line, which scored Hainley Statia and Josh Prince, who both reached base on balls.

 

The initial rally took place in the inning prior, putting up three in the fifth, ignited by a home run from catcher Anderson De La Rosa. The shot to left field was De La Rosa's first of the season and first of his Triple-A career. All three homers were solo shots making 17 of Nashville's 20 homers this season solo affairs.

 

Later in the inning, Statia drew a walk to get on base and stole second before moving to third on Davis' infield single. Outfielder Caleb Gindl followed with a two-out two-run triple to pull the Sounds to within one.

 

Davis finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and extended his season-best hit streak to five games. After driving in the Sounds eighth run with a single through the infield in the eighth inning and moving to second on the throw home, the 29-year-old scored the team's final run off the day on Gindl's single to left field. Gindl also finished with three RBIs.

 

Nashville starting pitcher Tyler Thornburg allowed the Express an early lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. Shortstop Jurickson Profar cracked a double to the wall in centerfield and came around on Chris McGuiness' double into left field. McGuiness crossed home plate via a Yangervis Solarte single.

 

After Thornburg issued two walks to lead off the fourth, designated hitter Alex Buchholz hit a double that rolled to the left-center field wall. Thornburg left in line for the loss, but benefitted from the Sounds comeback to finish with the no decision, fanning three and walking two over four innings of work in which he allowed four runs to Round Rock on six hits.

 

Travis Webb took the hill in the fifth inning for the Sounds and loaded the bases. The 28-year-old twirled a bases-loaded strikeout before Michael Olmsted (1-1) entered the game with two outs. Olmsted finished the frame by inducing Buchholz into a groundout. He stayed in to pitch the sixth and received the win for his efforts, giving up one unearned run and walking two.

 

Donovan Hand and Rob Wooten also got work out of the bullpen, combining for three hitless innings in which they walked three and struck out three.

 

In the sixth, Sounds Manager Mike Guerrero was ejected from the contest by home plate umpire Blake Davis after Round Rock scored on De La Rosa's throwing error in the sixth inning. The catcher tried to pickoff the runner at first with a snap throw down the line, but the ball got past Halton at first, letting in Round Rock's final run. Guerrero was arguing the call.

 

The Sounds begin a fresh eight-game homestand on Tuesday, May 7, as the Sounds host the Fresno Grizzlies (AAA-Giants) for four games before the Sacramento River Cats (AAA-A's) come to town.

Gindl has stayed hot, and today was his first game of the season in the 3-hole in the Sounds lineup -- he even added an OF assist. Every Nashville batter had a hit today except for Statia & Hunter Morris, who each walked twice. Nice to see Khrush Davis get back into the swing of things, quite literally, with his first HR of the 2013 campaign; the two walks aren't too shabby, either.
